The best restaurants in Rode and Norton St Philip Mendip South West

We had a great lunch on Saturday with family, including our 4 year old daughter. The staff were so friendly and attentive and the food was delicious! They’d only just recovered from a power cut and still had no signal but handled it calmly & professionally. The decor is really pretty and cosy too. We would absolutely recommend and will be back next time we visit :-)

Stopped here for lunch on way home from hoilday, plenty of parking and seating available inside and out , Had a light lunch baguettes my partner had prawn mayo and I had sausage with bri and onion , both lovely freshly baked baguettes. Plenty of drinks to pick from and dog friendly inside too .

The George is a proper gem of a place, full of charm and character everywhere you look. We only stayed for one night, but honestly, I wish we’d had more time to soak it all in. From the moment we arrived, Sam made us feel right at home—he was so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for him. Both Sam and Linda went out of their way to make sure we were happy, and you could tell they really cared about what they were doing. It’s rare to get service like that these days, and it made the whole experience feel special. Our room was bang on—super cozy, really clean, and had everything you could need. There was a smart TV, a fancy coffee machine, loads of teas, milk, and even biscuits. They’d thought of everything! The toiletries were top-notch too, and the room itself had this lovely charm that matched the feel of the building perfectly. It felt like a little slice of luxury, and we didn’t want to leave! Breakfast was something else. The quality was unreal, and you could tell a lot of care had gone into it. On top of that, we got two free drinks when we arrived, which was such a nice touch. They even sorted us out with hot drinks to take away—little things like that really make a difference. And the food? Just incredible. The venison was spot on, cooked to perfection, and every dish we tried was just as good. The calamari was done beautifully, the wild mushrooms on toast were delicious, and the duck liver was absolutely amazing. Honestly, everything about our stay was perfect, and that’s mostly down to how well Linda and Sam looked after us. The George is the kind of place you can’t wait to go back to, and I’m already planning a longer stay next time.

Regularmente vamos a desayunar y siempre disfrutamos, también el personal es muy amable y servicial, PERO fuimos hoy por primera vez desde la renovación y el menú se ha cambiado ampliamente y no para mejor. SIN BURBUJAS Y CHILLIDOS 😭 y sin sándwiches de desayuno. Muy poca elección ahora. Las nuevas instalaciones son muy agradables, así que no hay quejas allí, así que adivina cuando esté lleno el nuevo menú pequeño hará que sea más fácil para el personal? Espero que los nuevos propietarios lean esto

We had a table booked for 7pm to celebrate my nephew’s 19th birthday. It’s December, raining and it’s cold. There were 10 of us in total, we have two young children with us and 2 dogs, we have just come back from a walk. We arrived early, 5pm ish, we did not expect or ask for food early, but wanted to have a couple of drinks before our meal and take a seat in doors. So we asked if we could have a seat whilst we wait for the kitchen to open, to have a couple of drinks. The pub refused to seat us early even though we said we did not expect food until the kitchen opened and there were plenty of spaces available (please see photos). This behaviour was completely unacceptable, they could have easily accommodated us but instead let us all sit outside in the cold whilst we wait almost 2 hrs. So we actually finished the drinks we orders and left because we were so disgusted by their behaviour. My brother who booked the table made an excuse to leave not to cause drama for his son’s birthday. But I am absolutely fuming and will never come back to this poor excuse of a “family friendly” pub.

Popped in for a quick pint, as we were staying at the George Inn across the road. Lovely traditional pub, with great ales from the Butcombe Brewery. Very pleasant young man behind the bar. All in all, a pleasant way to while away some time in a very pleasant pub.

Closed this coming Saturday (28th May), tried the make a reservation and wasn't offered anything other explanation
