Best pub in Wivenhoe by miles. Friendly, accessible and great drinks and events - it might not be near the river but it’s the place to head to

After receiving confirmation of our booking which was made days in advance we took a taxi on a cold wet evening to the restaurant only to find it closed. We called later and were told that the owner had decided not to open until later in the month. His staff had turned up and been notified about an hour before opening time. What a way to run a business.

Fantastic cheese counter, helpful staff and super deli and wine selection. Stocked up for an evening in when staying in very quaint Wivenhoe. Will certainly be back.

I ordered a Fiorentina pizza for collection. It was ready on arrival and piping hot. The base was well cooked: some depth but not too thick, with a lovely crisp crust. The egg, spinach and slight saltiness from the olives were a lovely combination. Very tasty!

*Terrible service* We went to Maison and Mollie after it reopened post flood. Given it was the first weekend of reopening the place felt so dirty and unloved. The cake tins were empty. The one member of staff serving shouldn't have taken a job in hospitality. She appeared annoyed to be serving customers and even more so every time anyone asked for a different type of milk or anything extra. We asked to pay then and there to be told ''i think its best you wait'', without any further explanation. We waited 20 minutes for two coffees which were not the correct order when they arrived. The waitress slammed the down on the table. Whilst we were there she turned away so many other customers telling them there was a long wait when the place wasn't exactly overflowing. Such a shame to have a local lovely coffee shop run into the ground by a grumpy member of staff. Give the job to someone who wants it.

Food delivered was tasteless (Beef Kung Poo), Chicken satay was as tough as old boots with a spicy hot satay sause (!)...........Even a staple of a crispy pancake roll was awful, more a commercial steak bite type thing from Greggs. Avoid this place. We called to inform them of our disappointment but all they could say was 'yeah, yeah, yeah'. Perhaps something was lost in translation. All in all, £42 was wasted. AVOID.

We were visiting family in Wivenhoe - our first trip back for nearly 3 years. We saw that they were advertising pasties for St Piran’s day and having had strong connections with Cornwall in the past we all agreed this would be an appropriate lunch. Fortunately it was a perfect sunny spring day so we were able to sit outside and it was thoroughly enjoyable. However the interior decor also looked appealing , had we been forced to sit inside. The waitress who served us was lovely , most attentive, and ensured that all our needs were met with a smile, and the food was delicious. We were aware that the Black Buoy has had some very mixed reviews in the past, but based on our recent experience I recommend giving them another chance!
