Being a local I did not stay at the hotel but I thought I'd try the food as eating out in Newport is limited to say the least (unless you like pizza/pasta, there are at least 4 of these). I fancied traditional pub food which today is a scarce as all the pubs seem to be in the Gordon Ramsey mode, posh food, very little of it and expensive. The Wheatsheaf’s menu included real pub classics including Steak and Ale pie, Pork Belly, Steak and Chips, Lamb Shank to name a few.
For starter’s I opted for the chilli prawns, a generous portion, cooked perfect and presented shell off which saves all that peeling and messy fingers! Starters are all priced at £5.00. I followed this with a perfectly cooked 8oz sirloin steak (med-rare) with lovely crispy chips and a blue cheese sauce accompanied by a nice crisp fresh salad, (which was not just a bowl of leaves like in most places). Although the chips were frozen they were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, perfect, I almost mistook them for the latest fad (3 times cooked chips). The chef must have a trick up his sleeve. The steak was cooked perfect. A field mushroom would have been a nice touch. Here's the good bit, all main dishes are only £10, if you fancy steak you do pay a £4.00 supplement which is fair.
Even though I was stuffed I could not resist the homemade Rhubarb Crumble with cream. I managed to eat ¾ of it. Again, all the desserts were priced at £5.00.
All I can say is although this pub has had a bad reputation for food in the past this is certainly not the case now, it’s really worth giving it a try.
Our first visit but it won’t be our last. Called in for a coffee and decided to have a sandwich. Chicken and bacon with mayo. Best I’ve had for taste it was delicious and great value. Nice surroundings and very helpful staff
Went last weekend with visiting family, Our granddaughters Birthday next week, But we took a cake with us and asked if they could bring it out with the candles we provided,
They turned the lights off and we all sang Happy Birthday to her including staff and other diners.
Food was amazing, that's why we have been again today.
Staff Brilliant 👏
Very clean and nothing is to much trouble.
See you all again soon.

I came to St Joseph's table for a late lunch with my aunt. They had breakfast, sandwiches, toasties, salads and jacket potatoes on the regular menu and specials of homemade soup, beef casserole with dumpling and veg, quiche to name a few plus scones and various cakes. My aunt had the beef casserole and I had a ham and tomato toastie. Both were lovely and the service and friendly, relaxed staff made for a very enjoyable time. Prices are also low for fresh, homemade tasty food so I highly recommend a visit. There are also children's portions available with plenty of space for family groups.
We needed a cup of tea and happened to be close by so popped in and browsed the books etc and had a superb cup of tea. Pot of tea for 2 with a biscuit £3 cant go wrong and for a good cause.
Great little pub, Good Band on Saturday night, friendly professional landlord called Steve who keeps a good clean house.. Very Reasonable prices, fast barstaff and a friendly place with a good vibe..
This place is an independent pub saved by Steve from closure. I support the place by visiting regularly even though I don't live locally.. 👍
We chose Souvlucky to cater for our parents golden wedding anniversary as they love Greek food. Hara and Akis made the party so special and really do go that extra mile to help create wonderful memories for all the guests. Professional yet warm, friendly and fun.
The homemade food was absolutely delicious and there was so much of it. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Souvlucky and will definitely be using them again.
Thank you Hara and Akis for everything. It was an evening we’ll never forget ❤️.

Came here quite recently for the first time, looking for somewhere new to grab a breakfast. The staff were friendly, we ordered 2 full English breakfasts and it was lovely! Great value for money too. We will be returning again. 👍🏻
