Zorba the Greek Taverna in Chelmsford

Good food, good service, but not as good as we remember 2 years ago.

We came here on a Saturday night and everything was brilliant. Service was so quick and friendly. All the food we had was cooked fresh and all amazing. The lamb literally fell off the bone! Greek wine was great too, bold. Finished off with baklava and homemade cakes which are absolutely amazing. Definitely recommend coming here to anyone looking for top quality food and evening.

This is the absolute best Greek food that I have ever had! The portions are huge, food is so delicious and fresh and the service was impeccable. All the desserts were very good as well! The sweet owners and workers were very kind and recommended great dishes. We can’t wait to come back, we LOVED Zorba the Greek. Thank you thank you!

Lovely restaurant. Highly recommend. Staff were great, both over the phone when booking table and in the restaurant itself. The food is amazing! Feel it’s good value as well. Atmosphere was fab as well made for a great evening.

Food and service experience exelent

Visited Sat 16th March 24 with 5 other ladies from our dining & afternoon tea group. We have worked through the alphabet & this was our last letter. We certainly ended our journey at an absolute gem of a place. The portions of food were substantial & it was very tasty. The staff were friendly. A very popular place as most of the tables were taken.

This was the best Greek experience!!! Everything from atmosphere to food was finger licking delicious and whoever hasn't tried their homemade filled croissants yet, you need to do it ASAP. These croissants are the best thing I've eaten in UK so far. Thank you for an amazing experience ❤️

Excellent food, friendly staff good service. It got very chilly towards the end of the evening suggest wearing something warm if cold outside

The food is great here although it could do with a slightly larger menu. Maybe prawns or sea bream. Staff are nice and friendly. Only problem is it is so cold it spoils it. Needs plenty of heating then I'd be coming much more often.

Came here for Valentines with my wife as we both love Greek food and we absolutely loved it. The fried Feta is absolutely amazing and I had the garlic sausage souvlaki for main which was also lovely! The beer was cold and the service was excellent! Our waiter Ervin was brilliant. Really attentive and very funny. A real credit to the restaurant!

Lovely meal, very good service. The mousse for desert was amazing, definitely recommend. I think we were served by the owner who was wonderful and very helpful.

Another tasty visit to Zorba The Greek! We had the meze (available to a min of 2 people). Lovely fresh, tasty and plentiful. We love coming here. Always feels like a holiday but without the flight. Thanks! 😃

We enjoyed our meal at Zorba - the staff were friendly & helped us decide what to order as there was so much choice on the menu. The food was all delicious, and the portions are generous so we took leftovers home. Would highly recommend leaving room for the dessert - the cheesecake was the highlight of our visit!

Had a great night with a group of friends. Genuine Greek food served in decent sized portions. Small friendly family establishment under the railway arches which captures greek ambience...apart from the temperatures! Food is delicious and hot. Desserts are to die for of course and freshly made on site. Will try to go back in summer and imagine I'm in Greece

We’ve been back to Zorbas many times since it reopened, and I have to say, it goes from strength to strength. You’re welcomed like family, and the food is always delicious. The meat literally melts in your mouth and everything is always fresh, served hot and presented perfectly. If you haven’t been yet, you really are missing out, go and see Stella and the team for an extremely tasty treat. G and C

I rarely write a bad review, however on this occasion I feel I need to. We are a Greek Cypriot family and were looking forward to a meal with friends and trying out the reopened restaurant . First a positive, the young lady that served us was lovely and we all really liked her . We opted for a meze at £27 per head for 7 of us The salad was probably the only item that had been freshly made, although the olives were drenched in vinegar, I have never eaten olives that tasted pickled , we all Agreed this wasn’t nice and I nearly choked on the one I bit into as the unexpected vinegar shot down my throat . The dips and bread were nice but none were freshly prepared all definitely bought it . The gigantes were from a tin ( I buy similar ones myself ) Everything else was clearly from the freezer and warmed up The chips were nice The spanokorizo was like rice with a ton of green slimy sludge as the spinach had not been chopped so just stuck together in a wet clump. When what should have been the star of the meal Arrived ( the meat skewers) they were definitely pre frozen bought in and so over cooked they were inedible The food was laid out on big plates with no effort or garnish There was no room on the table for the huge serving plate , small Plates would have been better. I understand the lack of space but the two huge chest freezers in the entrance could at least be disguised The chairs were uncomfortable and i did not feel like I was sitting in a Greek taverna One toilet was out of order ( fair enough it may just have broken ) But the other toilet with random Table in it with a couple of wet towels on it and Two random chairs , as I sat on the toilet I was being stared at by a Henry hoover sitting under one of the chairs !! As the only Greek restaurant in the area you really need to up your game and cook the food from scratch There was only one other table occupied on a Saturday night but the other restaurants in duke street were very busy ,a sign that something is wrong!!

Friends birthday with20 people. It was pre booked and deposits paid so no reason for them to struggle with cooking and service. I think this is a take away rather than restaurant. You walk in and there's freezers in the entrance. I ordered the meze and the bread was cold and quite plain tasting. The calamari and meze sausage meat all looked shop bought. The skewers were over cooked and dry. The meat was of a quality meat. I was served wine with a £6.99 sticker on it but charged £21. The birthday girl chose the venue and the restaurant phoned her because I'd added this negative review. Two other people from our party felt the need to add positive reviews to counteract mine. That is the purpose of trip adviser.

Lovely atmosphere and pleasant service. My friends enjoyed their food as did I, but unfortunately my falafel were very dry and tasted a bit store-bought. I'd say that the price is a little on the high side (£100 for 4 main courses, the cheapest bottle of red and a diet coke).

My first trip back to the reopened Zorba the Greek. It has had its ups and downs since Harry, the first owner sold the business. I have to say to a large degree more ups than downs but the downs were bad. I went with a friend who loves Greek food last night, so this was going to be an interesting evening. We were seated and drinks were offered and delivered quickly. I am unable to eat Wheat and diary so needed help navigating the menu so our waitress went and got her Mum who is now running Zorba's. She was a lovely persanable lady who has the same issues as me so it was easy to make a selection. She also happens to be the daughter of Harry, so it's nice that the business is back in safe hands. Gluten free flat breads are now a welcome addition in Zorba's, so are gluten free chips, so for me a safe place to eat out! The food was lovely, the service friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to returning. Thank you for a lovely meal.

Really lovely fresh traditional dishes that we enjoyed here last night. Moussaka, calamari, chicken and salads - so fresh and tasty - taramasalata and pitta we asked for more! Gorgeous .. Thank you and happy to see you return 😁

First time visiting Zorba’s and was blown away by the authentic Greek food. The atmosphere was charming, and the service was perfect. The moussaka was amazing! I highly recommend to anyone looking for high-quality, authentic Greek cuisine. I am already planning on returning soon!

Four of our dinners,out of ten of us were inedible. The lamb kebab and moussaka were so dry. The moussaka was suggested as the specialallity. Very expensive for this type of venue. Will not be returning

Not changing our cutlery after our starters. The meat was poor quality and the prices were very high. There was a bug, it was the only one that enjoyed the food.

First time visiting Zorba, went out with my wife for our 5th wedding anniversary. Lovely friendly staff. Food incredible and massive portions too! Will visit again

Absolutely had to order as soon as we saw my favourite dish, Pastitsio, was on the special menu. It was just like Yiayia and Theia used to make. Delicious!!!!

Had the meze however was all lovely until the meat come out at the end. It was really dry unfortunately otherwise would have been 10/10

Excellent authentic food. It's as good or even better than what you'd get in Greece. The pork souvlaki was very tasty. Large portions, and the bill at the end was very reasonable.

I am an old customer of the old Zorba. Unfortunately the food is not even close to what used to be. Chicken was completely dried and chips undone. I won’t order again.

Just been for the first time as newly re opened. Took my daughter we had a lovely dining experience all staff where friendly and helpful. Food was very tasty and filling. Between us we had two mains and shared a couple of starters. Drinks we just had water. Would we go again yes!

Basic restaurant very close to the railway, so occasionally noisy, but the food, service and atmosphere was great, and very competitively priced.

Had both take away and dine in, with a noticeable difference between the two. Take away seen really expensive and didn’t see to get much food for the price paid. When dine in it was the complete opposite and had plenty of food, I was almost say too much! In house Greek wine was sensible priced and decent quality. The staff were very friendly and helpful with choosing wine, as well impeccable service. It would be good if they could dim the lighting slightly so we didn’t feel like under spotlights and was cold (visited December) If they had a refurb inside, this would change this place and the experience from good to great.

Lovely meal out with my husband and 2 boys for Fathers day lunch. Very friendly welcome. We shared the meze between the 4 of us and it was delicious. Boys loved the warm pitta bread and dips, Greek beans and vine leaves also very tasty. Overall would thoroughly recommend.

Amazing service, we had an issue due to the JustEat app causing a non veggie option to be ordered. The staff were very understanding and re delivered with an additional dessert in no time at all - food was excellent will very much order from here again !

One of the bests restaurant in Chelmsford. No doubt to go

Tucked away in the arches near Chelmsford station, this restaurant could easily be overlooked. It's worth seeking out though. The Kleftico had the most tender beef. Service was punctual and polite. Would definitely go there again

Superb service, tasty food, and really attentive when it came to one of our group having dietary needs. Was great before COVID was a thing, pleased to see it's still way way better than initial impressions might lead you to believe. We had the Meze and it's stunning value for such a great spread.

Really good Souvlaki pittas to take away, Great taste and bit portion too! Also eaten in which was great. If they served it with chilli sauce it would be 5 star!

We wanted a quick-ish pre-theatre meal so shared houmous to start then between the three of us had two lamb souvlaki with rice and a chicken souvlaki with chips. All were excellent and the mains were a good size. The service was friendly and efficient. I was persuaded to try the home made baklava and the waitress was happy to give us a container to take some away. It was our first visit but we'll be back to try the rest of the menu.

Having never been to a Greek Restaurant I can honestly say that I've started with the best. Having a great host really made it. The food was lovely. We will be back. 👍👍

We had a group of 28 of us for a family birthday party. We had a mixture of the menu and a few were vegetarian too. The restaurant catered for us so well. The food was tasty and served well. The atmosphere was lovely. Highly recommended

Delicious takeaway this evening. Food was delivered within 30 mins as promised. All v fresh and hot dishes were piping.We had a selection of cold dips and pita, chicken and pork greek wraps with halloumi (stuffed to the brim with well seasoned succulent meat, salad, red onion, chips and tzatziki) and an extra portion of salt and oregano chips. All this washed down with some ice cold mythos beer, and finished off with 'to-die -for' moist, syrupy orange cake.Our Greek visitor gave it the stamp of approval too thanks Nadim, see you again soon!

Authentic Greek restaraunt tucked away under the arches. Had Meze for 2 which was an opportunity to try most of the menu. We really enjoyed the food and the owner is super friendly so a good independent restaurant experience in Chelmsford. Thank you. :)

Went with my family. Food was nice. Portions were very large. Service was great! Would recommend :) only criticism would be that the music was a bit too loud for us but thankfully it was lowered.

Enjoyable food and friendly atmosphere. I had the Meze and for £24.90 you get a little selection of the majority of their foods. This was more than enough to fill me up and I would suggest this to anyone.

Had an amazing meal here. Don't be pup off by the exterior, once inside it has the feel of a Greek island taverna. Foot plentiful and devious, very clean and an wonderful host. Mixed grill really tasteful as well as the Halloumi. We were treated to Ouzo and a dessert on the house. I also should mention that when ordering I loved how the owner I believe was honest and said we might have ordered to much so with his advice scaled back. He was right we were going to order to much. I like that honesty. Lovely gem of a restaurant if you are missing a holiday in Greece.

Food was incredible, the veggie mousakka was the best I've ever had, baklava and portokalokopita were so so good. Service was great, very welcoming and friendly. Overall great evening and will definitely be returning.
