Excellent food, attentive server and lovely atmosphere Food came up hot and just the right amount per serving Definitely would return

First time visiting York and was on the look out for a quality restaurant and Zills exceeded expectations! We both love Tapas and this was both authentic and excellent quality! We had 6 dishes and a bottle of the Spanish White Rioja. My partners favourite dish was the delicious Potato Chorizo - Spanish Chorizo served on top of spicy, creamy Maris Piper potatoes. My favourite dish was the perfectly cooked Deep fried Calmari (always a good sign of a great restaurant!) what really made the biggest impression on us both was the excellent service. Adam who hosted us was a star. Both beforehand in dealing with our reservation and during our meal, was the perfect host and really topped off the entire experience. Whether you're a local or visiting York highly recommended this restaurant!

Found this restaurant by accident and what a find. Great place lovely staff and great food. Recommend the chorizo but everything was supper tasty. Please try it you won’t be disappointed

Fantastic little restaurant! Visited York with some friends and after wandering around a rather wet York for an afternoon decided we fancied a Turkish meal! Found this place on trip advisor just outside the wall not far from the Minster. It is only small so I am glad that we phoned and booked first! The food was fantastic-we had eleven dishes between us-they were all beautifully cooked and super tasty! My husband loves Greek salad and it was so good that after eating the first one he ordered another!! Wouldn’t hesitate to eat here again if we visit York!!

Fabulous family run restaurant. So glad it's re-opened. Foods great, atmospheres wonderful and it's just a lovely place to eat. Looking forward to the next visit.

What a fantastic meal we had on the Friday evening. Everything was hot, delicious and mouth watering. I think £6.70 for a cider is too much but apart from that an excellent establishment which I recommend wholeheartedly.

As part of our pre Xmas York trip we visited Zills for an evening meal. The food, service and atmosphere was all excellent. The staff there were friendly and the food came promptly and tasted superb.Would highly recommend Zills to anyone visiting York. Thanks to the staff and especially the chef for a great evening.

Loved this! Came for my birthday meal here with my boyfriend and it’s definitely one of the best birthday meals I’ve ever had. I love tapas and this stuck gold with me, hummus, tzatziki, goats cheese, halloumi, olives… all so yummy. I’m vegetarian too, could not fault it, so many vegetarian options. Got all the ‘dips’ and 3/4 ‘vegetarian’ options. Could have eaten it all again straight after. All followed by baklava. Delectable! Go here! Don’t delay. Fast service, lovely staff, nice vibe with music. Loved this meal. Will definitely be going back and recommending my friends to come here!

We pre-booked to have dinner here on a Friday night, while visiting in York. We were really looking forward to a Tapas style dinner, but were left disappointed.We were seated and ordered a jug of Sangria to share, we were sat near the bar so witnessed our sangria being made which consisted of half a jug of lemonade, some red wine and a handful of fruit. Not how I have had before nor tasted, it wasn't great and didn't warrant the £16.95 price tag.We ordered 6 dishes between us, as recommended, so chose a selection of dishes, calamari, bread, filo parcels, arancini, halloumi and some sort of chorizo potato dish. Food took a while to arrive but when it did were underwhelmed.The food all tasted frozen and cooked to an inch of its life, nothing tasted fresh and everything was in odd numbers, so weird if you are sharing, i.e. we received 5 1/2 piece of bread for 2 people, why not 6? especially when you are charging nearly £5! We also found it really bizarre that every dish was accompanied with a pot of spice mayonnaise, literally everything came with a pot of this stuff, not very imaginative and it didn't suit all the different dishes.During our meal we heard one of the tables offering criticism, they were complaining about the food they had ordered to which the waitress replied 'that is the chef who makes the decisions, not us', we also heard the chef shouting through the hatch 'what is their problem', which we found unprofessional.Sadly, would not recommend, over priced frozen food.

Me and my friend were served by Adam and Izzie they were absolutely lovely, felt very looked after especially considering it was a relatively busy Friday night and it looked like they were the only people on the floor. Would definitely come again, very cool little spot in York.

Loved the potato chorizo so much they even gave me the recipe . Gutted we can't visit more as we were on a weekend away . We will be back though

Wonderful restaurant, not huge and fealt very intimate, especially as we opted to eat in the 'courtyard'. Food was excellent, we opted for 3 dishes each, as suggested on the menu, and there was plenty for the 2 of us. There is a good selection for non meat eaters. Nice desert options, we chose baklava, which was excellent. Will definitely visit again the next time we're in York.

This place was really hit and miss. It was as if they had completely overbooked and couldn’t seat people at the tables. Everyone was swapping and changing tables all evening. We were served by a lovely lady and all the staff were friendly but it didn’t feel very organised at all. Our food... Greek salad was really basic with jarred olives and was tiny, bread- see picture £4.90!!!! Really small tapas dishes. We ordered the recommended amount and left feeling hungry. Very disappointed.

The food was lovely. The two youngsters front of house were overrun and brilliant. This place deserves to suceed. The posh seafood chain could learn a bit about customer service from this place

This is such a nice little place that has a lovely atmosphere. The food and wine were delicious and the staff were all friendly and welcoming. We’ll certainly pay another visit next time we’re in York.

A great little unique find. Whilst a limited menu in comparison with other tapas restaurants, the food was perfectly cooked and served, all home made.If I could give a couple of areas to improve;Lighting was poor in parts however appreciate that this fits in with the ambience.The service was incredibly good and friendly however, the gent that served us seemed a little ‘wired’. Not a criticism but a little creepy.Would throughly recommend!

Excellent food, very busy, only has about 30 covers, opens at 17:00,seems to do 17:00 to 19:00, 19:00 to 21:00 and 21:00 to close, you definitely need to book. Don't go to York without going to Zills.

The restaurant should never excepted the booking as they clearly couldn’t cope with a table of 8 , 45 minutes to get a drink and a hour and 45 minutes for our first dish . I refused to pay for the calamari as it was not edible.It just wasn’t acceptable

Absolute gem. Got a booking on a busy Saturday night in York. Food was really good, especially the lamb and setting was really lovely. Definitely would recommend.

This is usually my favourite place but what has happened? The food was not the same. Hard calamari. Prawns were like Asda frozen ones. No one asked us if anything was ok. No one offered us extra drinks or food. 😪

Traumatic end to a so so evening. After reading reviews I was really looking forward to a visit with our parents. However, the music was so loud, no over dinner chat could be had. A request was made to turn the music down , it was and then promptly turned back up. This left the four of us guessing what the waitress was saying resigned to shouting to each other. The evening then took a turn for the bizzare when a diner collapsed on the floor in front of our table. No effort was made by staff to assist. It was clear this male was not drunk. Myself and an off duty nurse had to provide aid to the gentleman. On taking his pulse she felt he was having heart related problems. Repeated requests had to be made to staff to phone an ambulance. They were unwilling to do so until my husband insisted. The male was unconscious on the floor, staff continued to serve food and drink around him. This is a very small restaurant, making the scene incomprehensible. A request was made for ice and a towel to aid cool the male, again initially refused. What was provided was an open bag of ice from the freezer. At no point did staff offer assistance, or enquire about the male. The female waiter then, as the male was coming too, tried to hand him his bill. No empathy or recognition that the male was actually unwell. This led to an argument taking place with the staff member and the male's friend over the prone male on the floor. I along with my family were utterly shocked at the lack of empathy, care or first aid provided to this male. We left our meal, made sure we paid our bill and left. Shocked

Went on other reviews and we weren’t disappointed. Food was excellent, especially loved the feta parcels and hummus. Staff were really friendly and helpful. It’s not very big inside so make sure you book .

Wow, what a lovely place! The food was stunning, service attentive and atmosphere great. Very pretty little place. We were visiting from Leicester for our anniversary and will definitely be coming back to York, if only to eat at Zill’s!

Had a lovely evening meal here. Ordered three items each and they all arrived fresh and full of flavour. Nice atmosphere, not too packed. Service was excellent. It was worth the money.

Booked weeks ago to go for a special occassion and the resturant cancelled us the night before some excuse about a staff do. Disgusting! Spoilt our day

Service was exceptional, the staff could not have been more obliging. We sat in the courtyard terrace which was very pretty and sheltered from the heavy rain that day.

We loved our dinner here - it's a small restaurant with a very friendly, cosy atmosphere and the food is delicious! We got 7 tapas between the 2 of us plus desserts. Our favourites were probably the arancini, the prawns and the chicken, but it was all very tasty! The baklava was lovely too. Can also recommend the sangria to share!

We love it here at Zills, the food is outstanding! We got the feta pastry rolls which are beautiful, the meatballs (bit on the small side compared to other tapas restaurants but very tasty) We also had the manchego, which tastes very flavoursome but again needs to be a bit bigger id say. Stuffed mushrooms which on this occasion was just the one mushroom so difficult to share really. The grilled chicken is cooked well and nicely seasoned, with two dips!We got about 5/6 dishes to share, to be full and if you’re big eaters, id recommend getting about 7-8 dishes.I’d recommend the Turkish Delight gin with lemonade, it’s soooo good!!Dishes to recommend are definitely the feta rolls and the chicken! We have had the goats cheese previously which also tastes amazing.I just wish you were open more days because it’s one of our favourite places! We can’t get enough! Yum!

Unassuming, chilled place which delivers fantastic flavour and amazing service. We loved it and will be back. We asked our host to recommend dishes from the tapas/meze style menu and he did an amazing job of guiding us through the choices and making recommendations.

Great quality food and staff very attentive. 3 plates per person is plenty and a good way to sample different dishes. Small restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere. Advisable to book in advance as it is very popular.

We ate here on Saturday as a family of 7 (2 children) and had never heard of the restaurant (we are from Newcastle). As you can imagine, when we looked for places to eat everywhere was fully booked. When we stumbled upon this restaurant we had no expectations, these were exceeded above and beyond as soon as we arrived. Adam our host was exceptional. The perfect combination of attentive, professional and friendly. We felt such a warm welcome with incredible service and this made the experience. The tapas was first class !! We are all really fussy, with my partner having lived in Greece for 4 years but the food was incredible. Every single dish was beautiful and everyone got to taste a bit of everything. The goats cheese and honey and lamb kebabs were a personal favourite but there wasn’t a single dish that wasn’t fab. Everything tasted so fresh and so flavourful so hats off to the chefs!! The wine was great and overall speed of service faultless.The actual restaurant itself is small but so charming with a little outside courtyard with a couple of tables which looked perfect in the sun. Overall the food and staff were incredible and we couldn’t have been anymore pleasantly surprised. Having not heard of this place I couldn’t recommend it enough and will DEFIANTLY be returning. Thank you and we can’t wait to come back !!!!

Booked a table here and were very pleased we had. The food was fabulous, great service from the owner who told me his mum did the cooking. Lots of choice, very reasonably priced all in a quaint little venue. Particularly happy that we could get a bottle of Turkish wine to enjoy with our meze

We hadn't booked in advance so weren't sure whether we'd get in, but they went out the way to make sure we got a table. The service was great and the food wonderful - a mix of Greek, Turkish and Spanish. The tapas dishes were really tasty, the lamb shish and Turkish chicken our favourites. Really enjoyed the experience, thanks!

That’s a bold statement, best restaurant in York with everything York has to offer but its true! The tastiest Mediterranean tapas, we ordered everything off the menu between 4 of us and it was all delicious! Always the friendliest service, Adam is just amazing you can feel the love he has for Zills and the atmosphere is like nowhere else. A proper hidden gem in York, there is limited tables and it’s always busy so would definitely recommend booking in advance. Since finding it a couple of years ago last night was our 7th visit and it was definitely over due this review! Already looking forward to our next visit, Yamas!!

Negatives- restaurant was packed, they had crammed in as many tables as possible. We were seated in the middle- with people squeezing past when entering and leaving the restaurant. Promised to be moved to a table to the side- but then completely ignored- as they quickly cleared and then seated another couple 5 mins later. The table was tiny and not enough space for all of the food. Only 2 members of staff- completely run off their feet. No explanation of the menu or any friendly chat- took our order- part of which was meatballs. The meatballs didn’t arrive- we waited- we were asked if we were waiting on any other plates- we said yes- meatballs. 20 mins passed and then the waitress came to clear the table- we said still waiting- she said no more meatballs- they had all gone and they were just too busy. She said - don’t worry- we’ll take meatballs off your bill! No offer of further or alternative food. The food was plainly average with little thought or effort. The stuffed mushrooms consisted of one mushroom with grilled cheese over the top- 6 quid. Enough said. The bill was brought to us- no thanks or hope that you enjoyed your meal or have a lovely evening. TBH we both said that we felt invisible. No customer service. It felt as though it was pure greed- cram in tables- quick turnover- not enough staff- not enough ordering in of produce to the extent of running out. Just felt like a cheap experience to be honest. Another table upped and left after 20 mins of being seated - presumably as they had been ignored too.Positives- difficult given the experience. Which is a shame as much of the negative centres around customer service which shouldn't be be hard to get right in this day and age. The courtyard which seats 2 people feels Mediterranean. The music also fitted the scene. We only booked and went as felt some kind of social responsibility after Covid and thought that we would try somewhere new. We live locally and wouldn’t go again.

This was my first and hopefully not my last visit to Zills. Great choice and nicely cooked food.

The food was very delicious, the setting was really nice. I do understand that tapas is supposed to be small but I felt it was expensive for the size of the potions you got, I felt the potions should be bigger for what you pay. Overall was a good experience and a nice evening out.

We had dinner at Zill's tonight and we were very happy with the overall experience. Food was really tasty and nicely served. Adam was very attentive and kindly checked every dish for my allergy requirements. Restaurant is cosy, inviting and relaxing. Would definitely recommend. 😊

Booked online and we turned up at, what appeared to be opening time, 17.00. Restaurant was very clean, bright and welcoming. Service was impeccable. Greeted, very professionally, by Adam, who was happy to chat and explain the menu. The only thing that could have gone wrong then was the food and it didn't go wrong. We went with the recommended three dishes per person. Everything disappeared. It was delicious. There was a choice of dips and different breads with different plates. We will most certainly be back on our next visit to York.Thanks Adam.

Bonito y peculiar restaurante. Visitamos el sábado 12 de octubre. Me senté en el pequeño patio de afuera, pero estaba lo suficientemente caliente con la cubierta y la calefacción. La comida era excelente, pedí 7 platos y todos fueron excelentes. El pollo a la parrilla, los arancini y las gambas eran especialmente buenos. Definitivamente lo recomendaría. Buena comida y servicio amable.

Nice little gem just in the centre of York. Cozy little place, very romantic with candles etc. Excellent staff and professional and quick service. The food was excellent, tasty and nicely decorated! The only thing there is to improve would be to make the portions slightly bigger. As someone who have been in many restaurants and enjoys good food i definately recommend it! I visited with some friends on my birthday and they went the extra mile offering us some aperitifs! So kind of them! Will go again for sure! Thank you!

Mi prometido y yo reservamos una mesa aquí la primera noche de nuestra visita de fin de semana a York. . . . y qué delicia fue. Al llegar nos recibieron y nos llevaron a nuestra mesa (teníamos la opción de dónde queríamos sentarnos). Estaba bastante tranquilo cuando llegamos, sin embargo, pronto se recuperó y al salir del restaurante estaba lleno.Pedimos una botella de Rioja Rojo (y donde nos sorprendió gratamente su precio, muy buena relación calidad-precio). Como es un restaurante de tapas, nuestros platos llegaron cuando estaban listos, pero no tuvimos que esperar mucho. La comida era muy buena, pero nuestros favoritos eran las bolas de arancini y el queso de cabra con miel. Era un ambiente muy acogedor, pero se hizo bastante ruidoso cuando el restaurante comenzó a llenarse.Definitivamente lo recomendaría y volveremos en nuestra próxima visita a York.

Visité este restaurante un viernes a principios de septiembre.El ambiente era bueno y muy íntimo.El servicio fue amable aunque un poco mareado. !Nuestro pedido llegó menos los 2 platos que pedimos primero, lo que molestó a uno de nuestro grupo: la comida es realmente buena, aunque los pequeños platos de tapas son solo eso. El Mezze se sirve individualmente, no un plato x número de comensales, lo cual nos pareció extraño.En general razonable en todos los sentidos

Le propuse matrimonio a mi socio en este restaurante y no se me ocurrió un lugar mejor. El restaurante es íntimo con un ambiente romántico, comida increíble y excelente servicio. ¡Zills fue un hallazgo encantador! Mi esposo y yo fuimos a celebrar nuestro 25º aniversario de bodas. Solo un lugar pequeño, pero me sentí a gusto con nuestra mesa, todo limpio antes de sentarnos. Comida fabulosa y un ambiente encantador. Optamos por el paquete español, los platos de carne no defraudaron. Suculento pollo, chorizo picante y las mejores albóndigas! Servido con ensalada, papas fritas y salsas. Mi tipo de comida favorita. Karen y Adam, que nos cuidaron esa noche, hicieron un esfuerzo adicional. Nos cuidaron maravillosamente. ¡Definitivamente regresaremos!

Reservé aquí en el último minuto con mi pareja, ya que queríamos una cita de tapas y no nos decepcionó. Gran ambiente con buena música, la comida era deliciosa. Se recomienda tener 3 platos por persona, así que tuvimos 6 y ¡fue perfecto! Definitivamente se lo recomendaría a cualquiera: ¡el plato de tapas de pollo es genial!

Well what can I say about this shambles of a restaurant!!!! My husband and I booked a table for our anniversary, we were really disappointed , first we were put on the smallest table going, we ordered a bottle of bubbly £21, which we thought was expensive, the food was very stingy , and not good at all. We DEFINITELY will not be back, very OVERRATED, sorry ZILLS but you need to take a long hard look at yourselves..... 😩

Great place , very cosy with only 8-9 tables but good atmosphere and cant recommend the food enough . A lot of choice between , Meat , Fish , Veggie and perfect if you like Spanish , Greek or Turkish food.Recommend to anyone who is fed up of chain restaurants and wants something a little different .

Visited on a hot Saturday evening. Managed to get a table in the little courtyard out the back. It doesn’t look much from the outside but it has a very good feel and atmosphere inside. The food and sangria was very enjoyable and I can definitely recommend if you like tapas/meze. The menu isn’t extensive but there is enough choice.

My wife and friend went on Friday 7.8.20 after recommendation from local taxi driver. Staff very accommodating and courtyard outside is lovely. Relaxed atmosphere, great service, delicious food....so good they went back again on Saturday

We booked for dinner on a Saturday evening, the restaurant was COVID secure and we both felt comfortable. We got a text a few hours before the booking asking us to bring cash as card machine was broken, a nice organised touch so no surprises at the end! Very small restaurant, we only saw 2 very busy staff scooting around, both were very friendly and attentive. We did have to chase up part of our order which hadn’t arrived with the rest of our tapas but we’re easy going so no bother. The food was excellent, especially the Istanbul chicken and the garlic prawns. Having tapas style dishes of mixed cuisine is a great idea, and it all went together beautifully. The food started arriving incredibility quickly, maybe too quickly- but we were starving after a day exploring York so were quite thankful for this! We shared 6 dishes between the 2 of us, and found this to be plenty. Lovely Pinot Grigio. Would recommend and would definitely book again if in York.

We sat in the tiny courtyard out back, Saturday, 5.pm really warm welcome, great service, delightful food and wonderful wine. We will be back.

Amazing food, lovely staff, great atmosphere. Me and my friend were in York for the weekend and decided on tapas for our Friday evening meal. We sat out on the terrace and the food was delightful, probably the best tapas I’ve had. So much so that when discussed out Saturday evening meal we decided to return as we knew we’d have a decent enjoyable meal. Massive thank you to Adam the waiter who squeezed us in last minute on Saturday and couldn’t do enough for us. Will definitely be returning.
