Came for lunch with my family and received awful service. The staff were rude and uninterested in us and whispered amongst themselves in front of our face which we found highly unprofessional. All in all they were not welcoming whatsoever and our food was not much better. The salad on the side was almost laughable it looked like the dregs of a left over salad and the food was cold and not appetising especially when you look at the price we paid for it! Would not return or recommend to others. I left feeling disappointed and annoyed

Used to frequent Zanzibar alot but hadn't been in since lockdown. Well today changed that....popped in with my mum for a light lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Lovely and bright Lots of plants Lots of choice for food and will be back for the breakfast choices Loved the selection of music Staff were friendly Variety of sweet treats Coffee was freshly ground and decent size. Didn't realise it's been taken over but love what you've done to the place. I'll be back 😊

I was highly disappointed with my recent experience at Zanzibar Cafe. The following issues significantly marred our visit: Our six-year-old child was served last, long after the rest of us had finished our meals. This was both inconsiderate and frustrating. The pancakes were dense and soggy, a far cry from the fluffy texture one expects. We were provided with an extremely small jug of maple syrup for three people and insufficient hot water for two pots of tea. The service was generally off-putting, with staff members seeming rude and uninterested in making our experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not recommend Zanzibar Cafe.

Not an especially warm welcome. No 'please have a seat and order at the counter when ready'. However, we figured it out. Coffee was very good, but the cakes not so great. I had a very odd tasting choc chip cookie which I couldn't eat and daughter had a muffin which I would reckon was a bought-in one. Lots of other lovely places in NB to try next time...

Was in on Tuesday having a lukewarm coffee. Witnessed the owner ban a couple for having the audacity to have asked for coffee extra hot and a paper cup on a previous visit a I believe one of them had grip issues with proper cups due to Arthritis (I think). From what I could gather during the exchange – this as stated was on a prior visit, and the owner was banning them after taking money for the order they had had on that day, no issues on that day!! From what I experienced the only way to get decent coffee here would be to get it extra hot. I won't be back; this is shocking and such awful behaviour to disabled people. I am telling all my friends to stay away; the woman has such a bad attitude (She is the owner). Plenty other nice cafes in North Berwick. I won't be back.

People here are clueless. No mustard available for a full breakfast. But they have sachets of red and brown sauce but apparently nobody else wants mustard and the very concept was treated as if caviar had been the request. Cheapest bread possible for toast in a curled up state. The concept of a full cup of black coffee in a mug was an alien concept. Apparently you can only have a mug for latte. Pancakes arrive…. No maple syrup. This was not explained at point of order or on delivery. Explained on challenge that they had run out. So £4.50 later I have my own bottle from the co-op 6 doors up. Shocking.

This is the second time we have encountered rude and sour service here. My friend ordered a club sandwich which came slowly, after I had finished my omelette and without the advertised bacon. We couldnt get anyone's attention (they seemed to be actively avoiding us) so she ate the adequate sandwich. When she mentioned that there was no bacon in the sandwich, the person serving looked totally hostile and shrugged her shoulders making the whole scene extremely awkward. She offered my friend bacon on the side (my hungry friend had eaten half the sandwich which was getting cold) and when my friend declined she reluctantly offered another sandwich (her face was extremely sour and she made us feel really awkward). This woman (dark haired) should not be working in customer service. She then angrily asked my friend if she wanted her money back. My friend gratefully accepted and this woman went on to bitterly complain about it in front of all the other customers. It was kind of mortifying for everyone there. Could have been easily resolved - they took 10 minutes to let my friend know that they didn't have the flavour of San Pelligrino that she had ordered either so I think the refund was the least she could have done.

Don’t often go out for lunch so was hoping for a nice meal with friends. Really disappointed with the omelette which arrived for lunch. I had a smoked salmon and rocket omelette, sadly it was very small, thin and flat, barely any salmon and possibly too much milk, rather than thick and fluffy. My friends omelette was also completely flat. We were asked when we ordered if we’d like our coffee now, which we said we did. But those arrived just as the last mouthful was cleared from our plates, which didn’t take long as they were so small. The food was nice, although no one checked with us if everything was ok, the cakes looked beautiful, but if you want to eat more than a very light lunch, order a sandwich instead! My other friend had a sandwich which looked more substantial. The cost for the omelettes and coffees seemed disproportionate to the quantity. That said, I would eat here again, the coffee was lovely but I wouldn’t order the omelette if I was hungry. Eggs are surely one of the cheapest ingredients, a bit more egg and a bit less milk would have been nice.

I used to be quite a frequent customer but this is the first time I've been in for a while & I feel it's gone downhill, has it changed hands? It seems rather chaotic, & uncoordinated between the counter & the kitchen. & it's definitely not as busy as it used to be. Coffee was fine but both my sandwich & scone seemed quite stale. And there's no sandwich menu on display which I found quite odd. On the plus side it's not too expensive with special combo offers but overall I'll avoid it in future.

We went to Zanzibar as we had been out and about in surrounding areas. It was slightly busy when we entered. It's not made clear if you can just sit at a table or not so we waited in the queue. When we got to the front we had to ask for a menu as there are no visible ones bar the one in the window which sadly due to the condensation on the window you are not fully able to see from outside the cafe and there is a table in front of it once you enter the cafe which people were sat at.The staff are not overly chatty but they were polite, we ordered a club sandwich and ham and cheese panini like a lot of reviews they took some time to arrive but they were very tasty once they did and of good quality. My partner said that the club sandwich was amazing and he would get it again. We also ordered a chai latte and a normal latte, once again these took longer than expected to arrive but it is a small run cafe so it's understandable there may be a longer wait. When they arrived though just like the food they were very tasty and made very well.We also noticed they had a very large selection of cakes and baked goodies that all looked very appealing. We didn't get any on this occasion but due to our frequent visits to North Berwick we will for sure return to try them out.If you are in the area and don't mind paying a bit more for good quality, freshly prepared food then Zanzibar is for sure worth a visit.

We enjoyed them all, and were quite pleased. They also had GF offerings for dessert, but they were limited. It happened we liked what limited GF dessert items they had, so we were happy. In most places that would have been it but they offered to go out and buy some bacon if were able to wait! What good service and so pleasant. Held back the coffee until our bacon rolls were ready (and they were lovely). Despite going to all the trouble of buying more bacon they kept apologising for the delay, even as we were leaving. Advised them that the service was first class and way and beyond what was expected. They deserve a visit (coffee was also very good!)

That 's ok - often happens - so I asked if i could have a small dairy-free bar which I carry in my bag, along with my coffee. (My 92 year old mother was with me and she was intending to have soup and, at 92, it wasn 't that easy for her to walk from cafe to cafe). I was given very definite and flat 'NO'. Had tried to get in at our fave cafe a few doors down but no seats. Zanzibar had seats and offered a fairly standard menu. Soup was ok but only came with a white roll (not tempting) so we asked for oatcakes - fine. Coffees took a while to make, sandwiches were ok, not much choice. Reasonable price, no card machine (very mid 20th century). Decor was a bit tired but ok, young staff a bit inexperienced, slow.

As a regular visitor I usually stick to the Banana loaf or the French brownie. However I chose Rocky Road for a change and it was one of the best I have had in a long time.

Called to this very friendly cafe with only a short time to closing. Owner only too willing to make us fresh sandwiches for a picnic later. Had tea and a delicious (homemade?) Aero biscuity bar - delicious. Really nice friendly place. Lots of people came in after us and we're treated with the same good humour.A well known franchise bakery just up the road were, for whatever reason, not prepared to oblige. I guess that's the beauty of independents, please keep supporting them.

Having never visited north Berwick we decided to go for a walk but choose a rather blustery day so opted for a nice cuppa to warm up. I'm glad we choose here, the coffee ( americano. ) was beautiful although was a bit disappointed there was no cream. Would visit it again , was lovely coffee and a lovely warm atmosphere.

Been here a few times - it's becoming my favourite place for a coffee and a scone when visiting North Berwick on a Sunday. The coffee is seriously good and it's nice to sit by the window and watch the world go by. Puzzled by the negative reviews about the staff though - they have always been lovely and helpful any time I've been there.

I had a spare 30 minutes so a Skinny latte was in order. The banana loaf was sold out but the French brownie did not disappoint. Staff are always so cheery and chatty.

Don't you just love places that serve fabulous coffee with a smile & banter - but also read & action TripAdvisor feedback ? Nett result is they have installed a new spring on the door to ensure it shuts quickly & securely ? Most required on cold days - this cafe is very popular so the door opens a lot !!Well done guys & every success for the forthcoming visitor season. #scotspirit !Richard.

One of my regular haunts for coffee with a bacon roll or sometimes to eat their amazing Banana loaf or brownies.

I've been in here many times but it's never occurred to me to write a Tripadvisor review before.Although we have sat in to eat, most of our visits have been takeaway. The service is invariably friendly, although the place can sometimes be very busy and and the staff struggle to cope with the sheer weight of numbers in what is actually a tiny shop. Anyone who complains should ask themselves why the café is always so busy: the answer is in the consistent high quality of food and in particular the coffee, which is without doubt the best in East Lothian. It's simply no contest. The coffee manages to be strong without being bitter, although I'd always recommend that latte drinkers pay 25p for an extra shot. Look at the reviews elsewhere here – the coffee quality consistently gets mentioned.North Berwick is a lovely place to sit and consume a takeaway coffee; plenty of people do it, too. Zanzibar even do a couple of "deals", which includes a panini and a coffee for under £5.00 at lunchtime. No wonder the place is so popular.

I usually get takeaway cakes or pastries and bread, but it was nice to take the kids and sit in. We all love the food there. The brownies are the best you'll find anywhere. The cruffins are delicious. I recommend the porridge loaf. And the cappacinos. My kids love the croissants, sausage rolls, doughnuts and cardomom buns.

Where to start. First the elderly lady behind the counter didn't won't to serve us or anyone for that matter, so a man took over. The large breakfast my husband ordered was no bigger than my small one, both breakfast were luke warm, and the drinks barely hot. Apparently they aren't allowed to sell the meals to hot? if this is right they should install a microwave somewhere so the customer can heat there own own meals.
