I chose this experience after winning a bronze prize on DAYMADE. It was a nice excuse to come to York for the day. The tour and tasting experience was about 45 minutes long. We started off outside looking through the window into the factory area. So we were never actually inside the factory/production area. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We only got to try 6 button sized pieces of chocolate but had water to help it go down. If I hadn’t of won this, its probably not something i would choose to do but not a bad experience.

Today I did the chocolate tempering course, and I can say above the experience of tasting chocolate, discussing the origins of cocoa, learning to temper chocolate, then put them in mould - the course was about 3 hours - I have to give feedback on teaching ; because teaching is a skill in itself, and this is where I feel Sophie has extended herself with making this course worth every penny. She paid careful attention to the question and crafted a response which made me feel she wanted me to not just understand but learn and to leave the course not only with my chocolate good but also provided me with the an educated mind for future growth. In all my personal development I look for specialists who can teach and this should be a underlined that Sophie takes not only chocolate seriously but help to build a community of chocolate enthusiasts who can grow outside of the course. A special mention to her team as well, ,you can see they all respect chocolate and the journey of those who sale in the path of York cocoa house and leave having grown a little more with the chocolate journey. Today’s chocolate tour I watched (as I’ve already been on one) and good to see the team skills in this tour. Well done. The quality of the chocolate from Sierra Leone was amazing at 62% good choice - hope we get to bulk buy this. I will never forget York Cocoa House in my professional endeavour in chocolate - my tempering skill has taken a step up for the best. Thank-you Sophie, for your hard work and teaching us to improve using chocolate as the platform growth,

Far exceeded expectations. My daughter (15) and I went to the bean to bar chocolate masterclass today and it was exceptional. We expected a fun morning but this experience was much more than that. The owner/workshop leader Sophie was so passionate and knew more than I thought possible about chocolate! We learnt about the history, the process, the science and we tasted and made our own chocolate, literally from bean to bar. It really was fascinating. My 15 year old was captivated and hasn’t stopped talking about it! we will be booking the next masterclass in the series. highly recommend 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We came to the Easter egg making at this shop for the kids. But halfway through with no reason at all she kicked us out. She didn’t give us any warning at the start or during the Easter egg making. She said it’s because the children is inpatient. That is literally the worst excuse to kick anyone out. All children can be impatient but my kids were quiet and patient. For their first time I think they did very well. I think the owner is too impatient with us. At one moment she let us make the easter egg and then she told us to leave. I think she kicked us out because she is in a bad mood. She just suddenly told us to leave for no reason at all. The problem with the owner is that her Easter egg making business is mainly for kids and she don’t know how to deal with them. She is very rude to just suddenly kick us out. I don’t recommend this shop to anyone. This shop has ruined my family’s whole day. If you want to ruin your day then come to this shop. I would imagine most people would like to have a good day.

I attended the Easter egg making workshop and like the previous workshops I’ve done here it was a lot of fun. This time though it was late starting due to the family that was also in the workshop arriving late. While I waited I was allowed to join the tour the shop also does at no extra charge which I appreciated. The woman running the workshop was friendly, very informative and offered advice when needed/asked for. My egg came out better than eggspected. The family that were also there were asked to leave for valid reasons. It’s reassuring the store takes health and safety seriously. While she dealt with the family another worker took over the workshop, as I was on my own that meant 1-1 session. He too had great advice particularly with piping and decorating the egg. Definitely worth doing the workshops. It’s the third one I’ve done with them and will definitely be doing more in the future.

There is a limited selection of chocolate for sale with various quantities of cocoa percentages, plus drinking chocolate, the interior is warm and cosy with comfortable seating although not extensive. The staff are informative and friendly. The workshops are visible through the large glass windows of people making chocolate. There are books on chocolate available to read. We got a complimentary small piece of chocolate with our drink which was very tasty. Downsides of our visit: During my visit there were two free tables which were not cleaned throughout our meal, even when somebody sat down on one, the dirty cups were left there, the table next to us had dirty cups from our arrival to when we left. The orange chocolate drink was far too sweet and also too hot to drink. But the 100% hot chocolate was perfect. Overall our visit was lovely and we had a relaxing enjoyable visit and will return.

I visited on the 24th August 2023. Firstly, the atmosphere was lovely and the staff were typically quite friendly, however the drinks were not great. I ordered the iced chocolate milk (I can't remember the exact name) while my friend got the orange hot chocolate. We were unfortunate enough to have watched the "barista" make our drinks for us while we were sat at a table next to the counter. Starting with the iced chocolate milk, the staff member took a very dirty looking carton of chocolate(?) from on top of a microwave, she then removed a LUMP of hard chocolate from the top of the carton with a knife, poured some of this very very thick liquid into the glass of milk. All of this was done while the staff member was pulling some disgusted-looking faces at the drink I was about to be given. Then, overall the orange hot chocolate wasn't the worst in the world, it was a very rich hot chocolate which was a nice surprise but I did watch the barista burn the milk, let it sit for a few minutes while she made my drink, and then re-steam the milk. It was a fine drink but as the milk was so burnt, it kept developing a skin over the top in between sips that my friend took. Unfortunately I won't be returning which is a shame as the menu looked very interesting and I would have loved to take my friends to this place and gone through all of the lovely looking drinks.

Coffee like warm and worst of all the server brought a coffee bean chocolate that he’d missed off putting on my saucer in his bear hand and as the chocolate wasn’t in any wrapper he even left a finger print on the chocolate 🤮. With all the lovely coffee places in York this is one I won’t be turning back to .

This was a hidden gem to learn about how chocolate is made. No, there isn’t a “tour” of a factory per se; however, you learn about the intricacies of ethical, proper chocolate making from forest to bar. The guide talks through the process and shows the equipment (sometimes running if they’re making chocolate), divulging into what makes good quality chocolate - I’m talking high quality dark chocolate where you can actually taste the different notes. You also get to sample all of the different chocolates and allow your taste buds to explore notes in chocolate, something that is often artificially added in high quantities to make us feel them. You won’t see name brand bars being made here; however, if you are truly interested in chocolate work, it’s worth visiting.

Booked in to complete a chocolate workshop as part of a hen party, paid £25 per person, and it was terrible. I would not recommended this place. The workshop was really rushed, taking around a maximum of 20 minutes, heated chocolate with hair dryers and put them in old Chinese take away tubs to set with some toppings such as marshmallows or smarties. We collected it and was given the wrong chocolate so we couldn’t even eat our own chocolate and as we didn’t know the hygiene of the groups chocolate we got, it all got chucked in the bin. Terrible service and not worth the money.

A tea and chocolate snack in the cafe would always be the first port of call when I met my mum for a day in York. I’d look forward to it and obsess about the gorgeous sourdough toast with chocolate ganache. However, when I went this weekend to the new venue with my mum it was so disappointing. I could have got over the more downmarket surroundings of the eating area (the old place was really lovely with a real vintage feel) but the service was incredibly slow. The procedure for ordering etc wasn’t made clear to us when we came in and despite there being 4 staff on the customer experience was poor. I understand that they have cut the menu down as it makes business sense but it’s now just a selection of 5ish sweet things, which is not good when you are after something less sickly. We didn’t fancy anything so decided not to eat. The cocoa nib tea was excellent and I would consider returning just for that but given they used to give a little chocolate with drinks there was still an element of disappointment. I hope they can improve the cafe experience quickly because it was so lovely before and I imagine there is more than just me disappointed with the new place.

The experience was poor. And we bought an expensive chocolate gift for a special occasion - which was placed in a tatty thin brown paper bag. The person said "I know, I keep telling the manager that customers say they want a decent bag for their gift purchases". Nothing on their website to take feedback, I wrote to the founder Sophie Jewett about our poor experience and she didn't bother to reply. This was surprising as I once heard her give a presentation to small busineses on how they must listen to customers! With any business things go wrong occasionally, but stay away from any that don't listen to customers or respond to feedback.

Wow, what an experience!! We went in by pure coincidence and had the best time. Saturday afternoon, cold, lightly rainy, walked around York just taking in the sights and walk into Chocolate. We signed up for the tour and were able to learn about chocolate, how it's made, it's origins and the story behind several.of the chocolates in the world. Serena, our guide, was very knowledgeable and really made our experience super. You can see she really loves what she does. We got.to try several types of chocolate and at the end even made our very own chocolate lollipop. Last stop a demonstration on how to make chocolate bon-bons. If you are a chocolate lover I highly recommend this stop. If you are not offered a special on a hot chocolate before going in, definitely get one on the way out. We were so impressed that went by there the before getting on the train for our ride back to London.

We finished our Yorkshire Appetite Food Tour at the York Cocoa House and had a delicious rich hot chocolate and a warm welcome from the staff. It was interesting to see the behind the scenes chocolate making and taste some different chocolates. I took the opportunity to buy some gifts too which were very well received.

The coco house in York is fantastic and good quality cakes BUT It lacks the authenticity and charm of the old coco house. The old time charm has been replaced with clinical industrial machinery. Although it’s interesting to watch the coco being made and prepared most people like myself like the old charm when chocolate was made in York. History’s a big part of York and a lot of visitors like nostalgia a lot of people remember the great coco houses of York . Like I said the new place is good and the products are quality the staff are friendly and helpful yet finding the new place is a mystery in its self and the number of disappointing people standing outside the old

Visited here for Breakfast and had Chocolate French Toast. The Chocolate Ganache was lovely but the French Toast was not so good and a small portion. We felt it was a bit overpriced for what you got.

I went with a group of friends who I was showing around York, and it was a roaring success. We had afternoon tea - or rather chocolate - and the chocolate cakes and savouries were all delicious and just that little bit unusual. What really made the visit was the staff, who were all so friendly, attentive and helpful.

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
