I have wanted to visit Bluebird at Coniston since the story evolved and restoration complete - tick - amazing . I then wanted a steak. Being honest, we tried a number of other places first ( we don’t know the area so just did in order of finding no other reason !) but eventually walked into here. So first impressions, really good. Lad serving and welcoming people in was down to earth and brilliant. Ordered sensibly priced drinks and then food. Sane chap served us throughout. I’m a fussy steak eater - it was brilliant, well presented and perfectly cooked. My son had the pie and it was too notch. Absolutely a gem of a place that we will come back to. I cannot recommend the service of our waiter highly enough - impeccable and a credit to the trade and those who employ you . I did provide the feedback there and then and an absolute shame we don’t carry cash to tip personally . Try this place you will not be disappointed especially if you have a furry friend with you. Thank you 👍

Stayed here for 2 nights recently. Whilst the bedroom decor was a bit tired the room was spotless, warn and cosy. The bed was really comfy. Our room looked out over the church so we could hear the bells chiming the time; it wasn't a problem for us. The choice for breakfast was good. Portions were huge and kept us going for hours!

Stopped there today as weather so bad we decided to treat ourselves to lunch before heading back to Keswick Staff very welcoming on arrival Ordered our meals, partner had sausage and mash and i decided on pie of the day but opted for chips instead of mash. Waited quite a while for the meals but always think thats a good sign it’s being cooked from fresh. When the meals arrived, sheer disappointment for me. Pie looked ok but mushy peas looks like mush in a pot smaller that’s an egg cup.Fries looked dry and inedible. Not wanting to make a fuss I thought as long as hot I’ll be able to eat them.Err no, they were horrible and only lukewarm . Waiting for the staff member to come back to ask if ok but they didnt. Bit of a let down. So i just ate the pie. Expensive at £16.95 for just a pie. When mentioned to the staff when they came to clear the plates fell on deaf ears and. Just offered me a drink instead. Not really what i wanted. They really need to check customers are happy with their meal ….Listening to the customers on the next table that didnt eat their roll as too hard, the staff member said the chef probably left it under the grill too long, i guess along with my fries!!! Staff are very welcoming but food definately is not, would we recommend and return, no sorry am sure there are better places.

Whilst staying on holiday with our puppy we visited the Yewdale pub, purely because it showed as closest to us on a map! Although our puppy was vocal the staff told us not to worry. We liked the table service as it meant we could sit and chat and take our time; so often now you feel rushed and a nice meal loses some of the nicety by needing to go to the bar. Gutted they didn't have the camembert, or the Eton mess that I was looking forward to,but my pizza was great and the experience meant that it just made us happy to come back! Thank you for the lovely welcome, relaxed service and great food.

I don’t know what’s going on in the local area but this place is getting heavily criticised elsewhere. The local staff in other pubs seem to have an issue and are telling people to stay away because it’s so bad, which was certainly not our experience. We pre-booked a table. It was available when we arrived. The staff were all friendly and polite - had we been in a hurry then it might have felt like slow service, but we weren’t so it was fine. It was also 7pm and obviously a busy period of time with lots of people turning up in large parties looking to be seated without a reservation. The food we ordered arrived promptly and was very nice. I had the chicken, my partner had a pizza - which was really nice, and huge. Great value for money. Yes it’s table service - I have no idea why people have a problem with this. I like nothing better than to have a sit down whilst people bring me things, and it saves having to crowd around the bar. Also I can see why they want to limit people at the bar as it was a relatively small space available.

I visit Coniston regularly & have for the past few years! I always visit this pub, as it’s a lovely spot to sit outside in the sunshine with a good real ale.. I will be avoiding it in the foreseeable, until they let you get a drink from the bar! It’s now all table service, which is fine if your eating, but just for drinks is a joke. I could have had 2 pints in the time in took to take my order & there was no one sat inside & only a couple of tables outside.. in fact, I’ve never seen it as quiet! There was staff on the bar, which you have to pass to go the toilets, but you can’t stop & order a drink.. You must go & sit down & wait… I then saw some people getting served at the bar, so I went to order, only to be told, I couldn’t & they were only served because they were local!!!! Probably pay a different price too!!! I promptly left & went to The Crown to spend my money on food and drink, which I could order from the bar & guess what the place was packed! I’m not against table service & if done well will bring more revenue in, but I like a choice, especially when just for drinks… Don’t get me wrong, the staff were all lovely & only following orders, it’s the management that need to address this..

Next day it was warm enough to sit outside. Went in twice to ask about service and was told I would just have to wait. Waiter served customers sitting nearby (arrived after us) and ignored us. Sat for twenty minutes and left for the Black Bull!! Next evening went to order a take out pizza and was told I would have to find a table and wait for a waiter!! Good job the chipper was open!!!

Knowing we’d be in Coniston on New Year’s Day (2 adults and 2 children) I booked online at the Yewdale in early Dec to make sure we secured a table, anticipating it might be busy. On arrival we were met by a pleasant waiter who showed us to our reserved table in the mostly empty pub. We were slightly disappointed, having booked a table, to be in the bar area next to a big group of young men who were swearing quite a bit and acting generally laddish. Some of the talk was not something I wanted my daughter who is 7, to hear. Thankfully she was entertained by the colouring menu sheet that was kindly supplied. To be honest I thought we be put in the restaurant bit given we’d booked in advance (the bar reserved for walk ins) but it appeared closed until we were leaving about 6.30pm. Anyway we got on with it as we do as we’re not fussy and there was another family with children there too. Our second disappointment was the big sign saying ‘sorry no pizza today’. Pizza was an option for us and something we were looking forward to having visited in the summer, so this was disappointing. I’d have thought if they weren’t offering pizza they should have told us in advance through the booking system or indicated online. This reduced the menu by 50%. We ordered from the main menu and children’s menu. The children’s fish and chips was excellent and I can’t complain, it was one of the best fish I’ve seen in a child’s menu. The adults lasagne was clearly homemade and tasted ok. Better than it looked . But at £15 I’d have expected it to come with chips not just a bit of garlic bread. Or chips should have been an add on for a couple of £ given the size of it but they were £4.50 on top. All a bit pricey for what it was and the portion size. The biggest disappointment was the fish pie. I was looking forward to haddock, smoked haddock, salmon and prawns as indicated on the menu. Instead I basically got a bit of haddock (well white fish), a load of spinach, and some cheese mash. No sign of the prawns, smoked salmon or haddock. The buttered greens it came with were leek and green beans - and filled half the plate! We didn’t stop for dessert and opted for a chocolate bar at the petrol station instead given how disappointed we were with the mains. Beer selection was good and no issues there and staff were pleasant and attentive. We will probably visit again for pizza but the pub food overall was a let down.

As usual, worth the visit just for the Lowswater gold. 4 stars mainly because of one member of staff, to be fair, only saw one in 2h I spent outside. Slavka(sorry if I got name wrong) from Czech Republic. She was running alone al the tables outside tonight(19th of May 2021) whilst at least 4-5 other members of staff where sat inside ignoring customers. I walked in at one point to see where is the pizza I ordered and was ignored by two members of staff(too busy talking between themselves). Maybe having a manager on duty would be helpful, unless manager was on duty and didn’t care at all.

The service was outstanding. The food and drinks were excellent and the prices were very fair. The Yewdale deservedly gets very busy and the tables are well spaced, so due to the outside dinning only permitted at the moment, it can be difficult to get a table. However, we found that if you wait a while one will become available soon enough. We stayed in Coniston for one week and visited the Yewdale three times. During those visits, we were mostly served by the very pleasant and attentive Natasha. They have an amazing pizza restaurant but I think the fish and chips has to be my recommendation. Whatever you choose, I think that you will be very satisfied. The Yewdale is well worth passing a few pubs for (Most of them are shut or shut at 7pm anyway!).

This is now our third time in Coniston for a pre Xmas break We started the morning in the town with a drink at the BLACK BULL but decided to to head over the road to the YEWTREE for lunch as we’d previously had good service and a decent meal. However, we entered the YEWTREE with no greeting at all, we then waited at the bar for service for at least 5mins only to be confronted by a rude female who had no apologies for our wait and instructed us to sit down and wait for waitress service, we did no more and left to return to the BLACK BULL. We had a magnificent 3 course meal finished with a dammed fine glass of port it was excellent! The moral to the story is don’t waste you time with the amateur efforts of the YEWTREE head straight across the road where they know how to do the job magnificently. We were looking for somewhere for lunch today and this place looked like it would fit the bill.On approaching the entrance we were ordered to scan the QR code for the new NHS app. My friends said they didn't have the app and the the staff member, presumably a new recruit to the Covis SS, said we couldn't come in. I broke the empasse by taking a picture of the QR code and we went entered. The interior is stark, unfriendly and cold, much like the woman who met us outside. There's a note on each table saying the doors will always be left open but you can ask to change tables if you're cold (that'll be nice in November). There was a form on the table where you ticked what you wanted to order from the menu and a section asking for our contact details, proving that the Covis SS woman on the door was being over zealous and the NHS app was mandatory.Anyway, we ordered food and drinks and awaited their arrival. The food arrived in good time and was fine, the beer was in good condition and the waitress serving us was friendly and helpful. The final bill was £48 and when the time came to pay the friendly waitress was replaced by the Covid SS woman. We asked her to split the bill 50/50 between the couples and I tapped my card without seeing the screen. I asked for a receipt which was given to me and as I was checking it my friend tapped his card for the other half of the bill. It turned out on checking that I had been charged £35 and the same had happened to my friend so we were over charged by £22 in total. The refund process wasn't easy either, firstly we were offered an £11 refund split between us which would have still left us £11 down. Eventually it got sorted and we left.I know the Covid nonsense makes things difficult for pubs and restaurants but I've been to plenty of others who have handled it much better. This place could do with putting the friendly waitress at front of house to welcome guests and relegating the Covid SS woman to somewhere that doesn't have any customers.

Arrived Monday evening and was hoping to get a quick bite to eat. We queued outside as per request on the board, this was fine and we didn't mind at all with the wait outside given COVID restrictions. We were seated after about 15 minutes of waiting outside. This is where the changes due to COVID stopped. Signs everywhere stating that the pub only offered table service and we were not allowed to approach the bar. Tick sheet menu to order. However it was 25 minutes from being seated and completing this sheet before I just gave up and went to find someone as we still didn't have a drink. During this 25 minutes, a waitress approached the table to our right to take their menu, approached the table on our left to give them their food, approached the table on our right again to deliver their food... Meanwhile we sat there trying to flag someone to get our meal and drink order in. Waitresses then started cleaning the tables around us (empty) and didn't notice that we were still sitting and waiting. Food was decent and filled a hole and price was reasonable. However we finished our meal, put everything in the middle of the table and had empty glasses and then spent another 20 minutes waiting for someone to collect and bring the bill as it was 'table service only'. Again waitress appeared to clean all around us but didn't notice the fact that we were sat there with empty glasses and plates or that we had tried to call them over several times. Had to get up again as we didn't have long before the shop across the road closed and we needed to buy essentials for our camping break. Approached the bar, no apologies and no worries from staff regarding the apparent rules put in place. A real shame as food was ok.

I could cry when I think of how this has changed since Jeff and his wife moved on from running the Yewdale on Jan 1st. In such a short space of time, how things could have got so bad. yes we are going through difficult times, but make people feel welcome. We would always be greeted with a friendly chat, and made to feel very welcome, when we eventually got the attention of the staff, we were greeted with, that will be £155 pounds balance to pay. Normally we would pay the balance on leaving. But there was nobody around when we left, so maybe thats why.The room wasn't the best, but it wasn't very clean, the cups on the tray, my husband had to scrub. The breakfast service was awful, only one serving, and on one occasion he went off to answer the phone for ten minutes. We asked for one tea and one coffee, he bought my cup of tea, no saucer, complete with tea bag, nothing to put the tea bag on to, and one plate of toast, no side plate to butter it.Breakfast started at 9.00am, not that they were ready and prepped at that time, so late, if you were planning an early start, climbing the old man, or catching an early bus, forget it, breakfast used to start at 7.00am for the early starters, the lady who I took to be the manager, was quite surprised that quite a few were waiting for the door to open. Many were quite cross, as the service was so slow, being only this lady on, and she said she wasn't used to doing breakfast, and it was an early start. The dining room floor was not clean, the area near the pizza place bar, had not been cleaned, and the table to the right of the coffee maker, there was dust underneath, and some sort of utensil there, which was there every morning, and our table hadn't been cleaned properly. Half of the gel dispensers were empty.Other people commented on there rooms not being clean, one said the toilet was filthy, and she would be having severe words to them. There was no evidence of a cleaner, the door to the restaurant had finger marks on it, at 9.00am, so that hadn't been cleaned.During these times, everything should be cleaned and cleaned again. This is the first holiday for most people this year, and we need to feel as if they are doing there utmost to help us stay safe.None of the staff wore masks, and when I questioned this, saying that it would protect them, one of the staff said, its not mandatory, and we're ok, and anyway l don't think it is real this pandemic, didn't make me feel safe.So sad this has changed, the original staff all left, and some of the staff now, look scruffy, jeans t shirt and trainers.During this time everything should be spotless. Like the previous review, go across to the Black bull, a screen, masks, and a friendy smile.Sorry, feel like I've had a good moan, but it is such a shame, when it was so good.

If I could I would give this establishment 0 stars. We visited on two occasions, one was for takeaway and one to eat in. During both the service was atrocious. As takeaway we ordered 8 pizzas staggered over 4 orders. The first order was completely missed. We waited over 30 mins to find out that the waitress didn’t pass on the order to the chef. When reminded they acted very dismissively.Sitting in, our order was taken wrongly, the drinks we received were wrong. We ordered starters and mains to be taken out together, this did not happen. We waited 25 mins for the mains to appear after the starters. Instead of the steak and ale pie we received steak and kidney and the quality of the food was appalling. It tasted as if someone left it out, had to reheated it and then burnt it. The pasta also came out cold. The tiramisu we ordered was as runny as soup and tasted like piss. Would not remotely go back. Prices, service and quality is appalling. Ruined our stay.

First day, we sat outside and waited for service as the advise at the door said 'table service only', after some time of waiting I popped my head round the door to ask what we should do, one of the 'ladies' working there said someone would be out soon. We saw the same 'lady' then chatting with all her colleagues for about 10 minutes, we only stayed because it was the only free table in a pub in Coniston. My husband then also went inside and asked what we should do, same 'lady' said same thing. So we sat back down and watched people coming in and out being served at the bar. She and other staff were still chatting away at the bar. We left. Second day, fancied a pizza, went to their takeaway pizza section to be told by the same member of staff, only doing table service inside, no tables free and only 2 staff. Same said member of staff, chatting away in the takeaway pizza area. We left, mumbling to ourselves how awful their service was to be overheard by someone else who said they had the same experience! Popped over the road to The Black Bull and they were more than happy to receive our custom. On chatting to other customers, they had also had the same experience in the Yewdale !!

We are here on Tuesday 08/09, the food was good , the service spoilt our visit. On arrival we waited at the entrance, the dark haired young waitress was in conversation with a blonde haired lady behind the desk , neither looked up to even acknowledge us. The barman with the ponytail caught our eye but quickly looked away. There is nothing worse than not being acknowledged when you enter an establishment, it is rude . A few minutes later we were still stood in the entrance in limbo still being ignored , I therefore asked the two aforementioned ladies behind the desk if we should go in , We were directed towards two armchairs near the doorway, we tried then but as they made you feel very low down we asked if it was ok to move to the next table which was free, it was fine to do this that table just needed cleaning we were told. We let the staff member clean the table by moving out of the way however we were obviously not quick enough as she quite sarcastically said ‘ let me clean it’ Sorry for giving you custom!! This kind of rude service is unnecessary, the food was good, the Diet Coke was awful ? I have no idea what is going on with that , one suggestion with regards to service would be to attend to the tables more often , all the time we were in the pub diners were being turned away as there was no room, however we had to try and try again throughout our visit to get the attention of a staff member to order drinks , second drinks and then to pay , the staff were chatting amongst themselves though behind the bar , we would have been in and out in half the time meaning the pub would have seated more diners simply be being more attentive. The service not the food would stop us dining here again

Popped in for lunch about 1pm on a Wed. About a fifth of the inside tables occupied and a third of the outside. The bar and table service was was being covered by a couple of youngsters from central europe who looked to have been left to get on with it and were doing their unguided best with fair english under difficult circumstances. The result was that service was pleasant and willing but confused and glacial.Decor plain and functional in a clumsily modernised, once elegant building. Ordered pizza, rarebit, arancini, beers and 2 cokes. Beers arrived then 20 mins later the food. Asked for the cokes yet again. Cokes arrived 10 min later. The pizzas were tasty and the arancini was crisp. The rarebit was a thick beast of a toast with a rather cloyingly thick layer of cheese mix atop. Not bad but certainly not great. 12" Pizzas came in between £10 and £11. Coke was an eye watering £2.95. The bill for four arrived with the two cokes we asked for but never received and two more that we did receive. The priced of these were strangely different from each other. The waiter took the cheapest ones off. Rather than pursue the reason for the difference with someone who was just managing enough English to get through, I just paid up. Not cheap, but ok. It needs a good manager/ front of house.Shame.

Was greeted by stressed appearing staff warning there was a 60 min wait on pizza. By the time we were ordering had gone up to 90mins despite half of the rest of the menu being ‘unavailable’.Ordered bread starter to pass the time - tasty. Pizza did take a while to come -not 60-90mins though which was good. Tasted good when it came. Service was all over the place and was left waiting to order drinks etc. Didn’t seem there was any decent communication between staff and just felt a bit chaotic

Visited a few times this week, to support the local restaurant business. Food has been fine (albeit on the slightly expensive side, for the quality), and they're trying their best with social distancing etc.Staff could do with some training on the art of politeness and hospitality. There was one member of staff (Sophie) who was very polite and friendly, but the all of the others were quite abrupt, bordering on rude. One waitress brought our bill over, and we asked if we could exchange a drink of juice on the order, as they had brought the wrong one to our table, she rudely told us they didn't have the one we'd ordered originally, so we ordered a coke, and she screwed the bill up, in anger, and said that would mean doing another bill for us.We've spent quite a lot of time and money here, in recent weeks, as we wanted to support local businesses, after lockdown, but I'm afraid our experiences here left us disappointed. A bit of in-house training, and this place could be amazing, as it's in the very enviable spot of being right in the centre of Coniston. We'll give this place another go, in a few weeks, and hope this week was just a blip.M

We arrived in a very busy Coniston at the end of a long walk at 12.30pm on a sunny Sunday in August, fearing we'd struggle to find a feed. But ... we were told to take a menu and find a table outside and someone would come to take our order which they did after a short wait. Excellent and quickly served lasagne and pizza and we were on our way. Thanks!

On the outside of the Yewdale Inn, it is written “Regional Pub of the Year 2016-2017” and I could in 2019 clearly see why. Last year (2019) when I visited, there were staff in suits or waistcoats who were clearly trained to the highest standard. My young son described it as the pub “where we had the best of times”. So we were eagerly wanting to return this year on another trip to the Lakes although we knew it had been up for sale in 2019 so we were expecting it to have changed hands. We entered and waited to be seated as the sign clearly instructed. It was clear that all the staff were very stressed out not just by their angry demeanour but by how one of them shouted out “I’m stressed out” as they stormed past. It was unclear why, as the vast majority of the tables appeared empty, although there were customers outside. We saw three waitresses and what we assumed was a manager. None of them were wearing face masks or visors, as we would have expected. Let me just summarise the facts: 1. We ordered drinks but they took 45 minutes to arrive, and one of the drinks came twice. 2. When the starter arrived, it was clearly undercooked as the tempura was very light yellow, verging on white, but it was just edible. 3. I ordered an adult pizza and the kids had smaller pizzas. They all arrived soggy wet in the middle and burnt on the underside and around the crust. The kids were hungry but couldn’t stomach eating them. The pizza oven had clearly been far too hot and cooking had been rushed. 4. Our starter plate was never cleared and left on the table empty throughout our main course. 5. The standard ice cream serving was two or three scoops, but as my daughter is still small, we asked for one scoop which the waitress said was fine. Two scoops turned up and most was wasted. 6. When we asked for our bill, one stressed waitress just shouted at another to do it. Another poor waitress just appeared to be doing all the work and carrying the other two. We didn’t see the manager again after first arriving. The whole atmosphere of the place was negative due to the stressed out poorly trained staff. 7. The bill turned up with multiple errors on it for food and drinks we had not ordered nor received. 8. We later spoke with other customers who also said their pizzas were soggy and burnt too. 9. We were told as we were leaving that several staff had got so drunk the night before they were unable to work that day which was the reason the staff who were there were so stressed out. 10. The member of staff that appeared to us to be doing all the work stated that she did not think the restaurant could carry on for long like that. We agree. Our experience was this was the worst managed restaurant that we can recall and it urgently needs intervention to sort it out.

On the positives - service was quick and we found the distancing well managed. My steak and ale pie very good quality. The issue we had was they got the order wrong and when they brought the right dish ( pizza) I only realised later we’d been charged for all the dishes including the one we didn’t order ( pasta dish) . So felt a bit let down in the end.

I really had high hopes for this pub but was disappointed with our meal there. The first time we went we were asked if we could leave it 15 minutes before ordering as there was a backlog - no issue at all for us - but when we came to order, they’d completely ran out of pizzas! As this was the whole reason we’d decided to eat there, we decided to eat elsewhere and come back the next evening. We came back on the Monday evening when it was quieter. To start, the staff were very accommodating and helpful in finding us a suitable table. Then it appeared we were forgotten about. 15-20 minutes passed before anybody came to the table even to get our drinks order, and two tables that came in after us were served before us. We managed to get our pizzas and after ordering they actually came within 10 minutes which was great, however we were both disappointed - the so called very hot pizza was not hot at all and had barely any toppings and was quite tasteless, the tuna pizza was okay, again not much topping. We had to send the chips back as they were still hard inside and we had to ask for salt and pepper etc, not offered (not a big deal but it’s a pain to keep having to ask for things). I know things are very hard with the new measures in place and I have to say, they are handling that very well. My issue was more with the quality of the food and the slow service.

Cannot comment on the venue as a hotel, the bar food was barely edible, cold and under cooked, the staff totally dismissive of our complaint. £18 for two sandwiches and a coffee. The food took 30 minutes to arrive by which time we had long since finished our coffee. Coffee was made by a lad who was very pleasant by who wore grubby trousers and kept pushing his long fringe out of his face while making and serving our coffee. In the thirty minutes we waited, the table of three were served and a further order of two toasted sandwiches was sent out of the kitchen. The sandwich was, at best average, the Cheddar cheese was bland and for £7.50 it was poor value. Cutlery and sugar holders on our table were all empty and a general attitude of "that'll be good enough" prevailed. Not I place I would recommend or revisit.
