Ye Olde Chippy in Southend-on-Sea

Staff were friendly enough service was good. Food was disappointing, ok but not great, generally food for a restaurant would be freshly cooked and not served from a heat box.

Dined in, both me and my partner had Cod, chips and mushy peas, absolutely awful!!! Chips were hard and cold, chips had the black eyes that had not been peeled off, the fish was very small and tasted as if it had been bought in a cheap freezer food store, batter was thin and tasteless, mushy peas were fine, the waiter and waitress were lovely, £13.50 for cod & chips was extortionate for what we got, the cafe was clean but would not recommend or return!

Dined in, sat where I was told to sit. I was served my Rock and chips on a polystyrene platter. The chips were the ugliest I had ever seen, so I asked for a fresh chips, they agreed. The 2nd chips was better. As for the Rock, it was alright, nothing special, would I go there again, no. I was made to feel as though Londers were not welcome. Very dry atmosphere. Unfriendly natives, they stared so much, I get the distinct impression they were speaking I'll of me. I am sure the locals get better treatment.

Brilliant place to eat, the food is really good and the staff are so helpful and friendly, it has a great atmosphere which even includes a soft play area for the kids whilst you wait for your food, there is plenty of seating so you can always find a table, all round a good old fashioned chip shop, highly recomend

We went here with our family and there seems to be a problem with the restaurant owner as from outside it looks like one restaurant but inside they have split it into 2 restaurant where the prices for sitting in is the same but only the end side has softplay access and not the other side Isn't this fair for the people sitting on other end who are paying for the same service where food is served the same and the kitchen is same but just one side has all the facilities wmexcept the toilet is again shared witin both restaurant I would appreciate if the menu is kept different and different pricing so that people don't feel that it is the same restaurant for sitting inside. Also the board outside shouldnbe changed so rhat reflects that there are 2 different restaurants and not one

Service was 110% they went above and beyond with our big order. The cod was excellent, I'd definitely come back here again.

Went to Southend stop at the ye old chippy And had best service and cod chips sausage in batter and chips + mushy peas I have had in ages thank you all it was lovely.

Food was wonderful. All the staff were lovely perfect service and at a reasonable price also.

Fine if you're on a diet. Chip portions are miniscule, wrapped in a tray and one piece of paper that had disintegrated by the time we got home.

Very good and friendly service, delicious fish and chips which we were pleased to learn is all fried and prepared separately to prevent cross contamination. Owner is fantastic and had such a positive bubbly demeanour even when we were the last customers! Will definitely return!

Went in there today, chips weren’t fresh, served them up immediately. How long were they in the fryer for? Smelt horrible, tasted horrible, looked horrible- skins on them and spotty. Went in the bin. Disgusting. I do not recommend at all.

Went in there with 3 kids. The service was not there at all. Spent £50 to eat with wooden cutlery. Pathetic! Also the haddock quality is a lot poorer than a year ago. Next time will head to Three Shells

Super friendly staff & restaurant, serving excellent food. My family enjoyed fish & chips, freshly cooked. Our grandson enjoyed the soft play area too. All-in-all a lovely day spent in Southend topped off with a fabulous meal. Highly recommended.

Absolutely disgusting customer care! We had a member of our party in a wheelchair for which there was NO ramp or access into the restaurant and luckily another customer offered to help us lift the wheelchair into the restaurant ( no member of staff offered to help!) We sat and when we went to order our food I asked if they would be served in proper plates as our disabled friend needed to be able to cut up her food and the narrow cardboard trays would be no good to move the food around in they said we would have to have it in the cardboard trays as we were sitting in the takeaway section INSIDE the restaurant, how ridiculous… we’re in the restaurant not taking away! It was meant to be a treat for our disabled friend which they rudely managed to ruin! They girl behind the counter serving was EXTREMELY rude so would never go there again, we walked out and luckily found great service as well as good food in Clarkes Fish Restaurant up the road.

We had booked a big area for 20, for my sons birthday, before we went on to Sealife. Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for more- the staff were amazingly helpful and friendly, food was fast and delicious (all cooked fresh too), prices really reasonable and also there was a great softplay which kept out rabble entertained! We wouldn’t hesitate to come back. Thanks to the restaurant and staff for accommodating us!

Absolutely cannot put into words how amazing the guys were here today, my dog came to Southend beach for his last trip before going to heaven & he was welcomed with open arms & even had his meal on the house they were so accommodating and made our last day together so special. If you're looking for a soft play area in a chip shop, you've found it! The Good: Service was friendly and fast, food served quickly. Chips were good, crispy and freshly cooked The bad (or very bad): the cod. One of the worst I've had in a chip shop I'm afraid. Cheap and nasty, not at all chunky cod. Unusually for me I left half of it. Wouldn't recommend. May get chips again if in area but not fish

We placed a larger order for collection that was promptly made. The fish was deliciously cooked and the chips were great. The staff are very friendly. Would highly recommend!

Chips arrived completely cold, anaemic in colour, and none of the cheese was melted. £14 for cheesy chips and peas for two… rip off. Not sure how they got let out of the shop looking like that.

This chippy was recommended to us and was worth the short walk from the pier. Waited a bit for food to come but it was all delicious. They do an over 60s meal too which was excellent and a bit cheaper than the main menu. Great customer service. It also has a play/ ball park area at the back, great for families.

Carehome came for lunch, the food was beautiful and the staff were so friendly and could not do enough for our residents we will certainly be back. Thank-you so much.

For those that have given this a good review have never had fresh cod, this isn't it's frozen and tasteless! I work in a chippy part time in my home town and theirs is delivered fresh every day , the chips were poor too as was the luke warm saveloy and the watery mushy peas !! Would not use again if going to southend that's for sure. Was thoroughly disappointed, if prices are going up that's to be expected but then are the expectations too sorry 😞

Was reckoned buy coach driver as best in Southend so gave it a try, not the best buy far chips warm sausage not that good. Will be giving it a wide bearth. Chip shop over road from coach park is a lot better. Sorry for bad review.

Stopped by this chip shop as we was in Southend for our day out,I've always thought this is the best along the seafront,how wrong am I.we ordered cod and chips my partner and I complained about the fish it was overcooked, dry and flavourless .couldn't eat it,we had a couple of mouthfuls asked the waitress to come over she was very rude and back chatted my partner saying she had eaten half of it which we hadnt , my partner said we're prepared to pay for the chips and drinks but we're not paying for the fish.this is the last time we're eating in here.awful experience.

we ordered cod an chips, the fish was over cook and tasted horrible, I ate one mouthful and ask the waitress to come over as I wasn't satisfied with the meal , she was so rude saying you've Complained and ate half which I hadn't I replied look I have just had one mouthful, she then said calm down in a very rude voice and with that I said dont tell me to calm down love , I said we will pay for the chips and drinks which we did , we will never go there again

Look no further for decent fish and chips! We regularly go to Southend and have been disappointed in the past with the other local restaurants so I was really hoping this would be great ….. it was!! The kids meals are around £5.40 and included chips and a drink and were HUGE! Me and my partner got fish and chips and saveloy and chips and was not disappointed. It was served promptly and we honestly had a great experience. We will be going back!!!! Thank you!

Ye Olde Fish and Chip Shop. Overall had a pleasant experience. The food was nice, with the cod being particularly tasty, and the portion size was generous for the price—around £8 for cod and chips. The chips were great initially, though the last few were a bit dry. However, that didn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the meal. The service was impeccable, with friendly and attentive staff making the experience even better. Great value for money, and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone craving classic fish and chips. Poor service,average fish and chips

Have eaten here twice in the last 3 days. My daughter is saveloy obsessed (ASD) she said and I quote “this is the best saveloy ever!” We have tried the fish and chips which was also delicious. Curry sauce was thick and tasty. Only thing I would say is we did use the soft play which was a lovely added bonus but too many parents in there not keeping an eye on their children. I would impose it that only parents supervising are allowed to let their children in. Not the staffs fault at all. Great food and great service!! Will definitely go back if in the area.

My son loved it here so much he insisted we go back, so we visited twice in one weekend. The soft play was great, such a good idea, but the young ladies who were working on Friday lunchtime where honestly the nicest and friendliest staff I’ve ever encountered anywhere. He wants to come back next year. Food was good, arrived quickly and the toilets were fine. Photo is the kids half eaten fish and chips.

Have used this fish and chip shop every time I’ve visited Southend over the years and normally exceptionally good but this particular time felt absolutely let down by one of the staff members with the blond hair who was particularly rude towards me and was swearing this isn’t the level of service I expected because she thought I was gonna go in to the wrong toilet absolutely disgusting attitude and won’t ever be using this chip shop ever again.

The chips were very under cooked, the portion turned to a hot pile of greasy mash.

The perfect fish and chips are no longer a dream! Cod that is light and fluffy and doesn't taste like old cooking oil. Chip that have a good mix of crunchy and big chunky. And the service was amazing. Staff are friendly and make sure everyone is attended to without bothering in the middle of your meal. Great news for parents as there is also a soft play area to let the kids burn some energy while you rest from the great meal you have just finished. Potions are good sizes and prices is justified by the quality of the meal.

Ordered 3x cod and chips sat in cost £2 each more the order came whitin 5 minutes the cod was tasteless and the chips were pre heated and horrible, even the salt and vinegar had no taste, what a waste of £40.50 will not eat there again

Ordered cod and chips. COD was undercooked and the chips were raw. We didn’t check the reviews before entering, don’t make the same mistake we did. Food was tasteless and disgusting. I’m sure the 5 star reviews here have been paid for!

Worse chip shop ever. If I could of given zero stars I would of. Staff was Okish but not very welcoming or helpful. The sausage and chips had dried up ,cold and tasteless. It was like the food had been sitting around since lunchtime. I had a added bonus of penicillin growing on the roll as well .I certainly wouldn't recommend eating from this place due to food and hygiene.

Had sausage in batter and chips twice and two buttered rolls, The battered sausages where dry and cold the chips where also dry every one had an eye on it and the worst part the rolls had mould growing on them!! Even the sea gulls turned their beak's up and left them. Utterly disgusted

I love this fish and chips shop. Miss going there. We upset to make a B line for this chippy on a weekend. Never had fish and chips that was as good as this place. Comfy surroundings. Thought when the council sold off the ground opposite the Kursaal, where this fish and chips was, that we'd lost a great chippy, but luckily the guy got a new place and opened up. Fantastic. Go and try it. I guarantee you won't go anywhere else!! X

Came here with work supporting 20 people with learning difficulties. James the owner spoke to us in advance, did everything he could to make sure we were sorted. Got food orders in advance. Kept in touch.On the day introduced himself and staff team and sorted all our group out. He kept coming over to chat to us despite clearly being busy. All the staff on the day were absolutely charming. Of course the food was delicious, fast and good size servings. Thoroughly recommend.

Poor service, the waitress left us waiting over 20 min to get a table while she would let customers coming after us sit. In the end, she told us to leave and that she would not let us sit inside as we didn't know that the first till was for take away only, she could have just explained it nicely however, she was rude and felt that she was treating us that way as we were the only customers looking different. The way she approached us, the looks she was giving us, the vibes.. never felt racism in the UK before until that day.

Mum in law wanted chips from a proper chippy and to sit in the car watching the sea. The staff are lovely and the chips were hit the spot, hot, crispy and just the right amount of salt and vinegar and good portion size. This is our go to chippy when in Southend. Thank you xx

Visited on the hottest day of the year (so far) 12th May 2024, late afternoon food surprisingly good. (Haddock and cod). The young lady who served me was very friendly considering the busy day, and I overheard the young chap serving another customer who also was being very helpful. Sadly don’t know their names but well done and thank you!
