Rude staff. More interested in talking to each other than serving customers. I was waiting at the bar to be served money in hand and the guy behind the bar looked at me several times, then another guy stood next to me came and stood next to me the barman came over and said usual to the guy next to me. It’s clear they only want you in the pub if you are a regular.

Cozy pub with very inviting and welcoming staff. The drinks are very reasonably priced for Woodbridge. Type of pub you say you’ll go for one and end up there the whole night!

Came to the pub with a group of friends to have some drinks and a catch up. One of the bar staff was incredibly sour and refused to answer simple yes or no questions about what drinks they had to offer as it “wasn’t our turn”. Whilst waiting patiently to be served, the same bartender rudely barged past us to get back to the bar, calling my friend “stupid” for standing where she was, after she politely moved aside to let him past. The owner of the pub was no better! As they were closing, he went around the premises aggressively telling people to f*** off out of the pub. The lack of courtesy and manners from the workers is truly distasteful and unacceptable. It’s such a shame as the pub itself has such a great atmosphere. Don’t bother coming it you were thinking of doing do.

This is a lovely, charming little local type pub. What impressed me was the fact rhey only had one barman worming (on a Saturday afternoon) and, despite how busy it was, he was totally on top of things and very friendly. Good job!

We sat outside in the courtyard of this pub whilst on holiday last week. The lager and wine were very good. We wanted to stay for another drink but the seats were incredibly uncomfortable and the garden was so sad we decided to move on. With the pub being closed for covid, why hadn't anyone taken the time to tidy up what could be a very pretty garden. It was along with the furniture, unloved.

Called to this pub on Saturday night shortly after 10.30pm only to find the doors locked. The windows were open with people drinking and others we could see standing at the bar. Thinking the door had been closed by mistake we called to some seated customers who kindly asked the landlord/ manager to come over. His response from some distance was that they’d been busy and didn’t want to serve anyone else. Then walked off. There was absolutely no need for his unpleasant attitude. There are plenty of friendly places in Woodbridge. When we visit the town again we’d avoid this pub at all costs.

Went to the Bell & Steelyard tonight to see if we could watch the Liverpool v Man City game as they boast of big screens & Sky Sports. Met with a decidedly unfriendly welcome, followed by a 5min comedy routine (for their own benefit) telling us to basically eff off to another pub. Astonishing cuntism.

Two of us went in here on a Friday evening (around 8) and were told to leave immediately because we “couldn’t be older than 12” despite the fact I was holding my car keys. Didn’t get asked for ID was just rudely told to leave by barman. As far as I’m aware, there are no laws that you have to be 18 to order a soft drink in a pub so was very confused and offended as to why we had to leave.

I was unexpectedly in Woodbridge and sought out a historic pub with good food and a good selection of real beer. The hospitality I hoped would also accompany these requirements. I was not disappointed. This pub is at least a three centuries old and was a former steel workshop as denoted by the name. It still has the winch outside, though damaged by a passing tall lorry at the moment. As you would expect there are not right angles here, walls, doors and floor are all on the wonk and part of the reason I love pubs like this. We were greeted warmly and the excellent and helpful hospitality continued to us out of towners. I would therefore say that although every pub needs its locals, any person visiting the town will receive a lovely reception here. Three well kept real ales, the two I tasted were great. From the traditional menu we chose cod (fresh from the mongers that morning) and chips and the steak and kidney suet pudding. Cod was good quality and the batter so crispy, almost tempura, that I wish my local fish and chip shops could equal it. I have not had a steak and kidney pudding for years and remember it as quite stodgy. Not here. The suet pudding is the lightest I have eaten and it's great to see someone still putting kidneys in it. Lovely rich gravy to go with the buttery mash and creamy leeks. With both meals we had chunky chips which tasted twice fried :) - don't quote me on that. Wish I lived closer as I would be in here all the time. Maybe I'll retire here.

This was the third (and last) pub visited in Woodbridge on a freezing cold December evening. We loved it and if we weren't heading out for food we would have stayed for longer. A great selection of ales on offer (a couple of St. Edmunds went down very well) and the choice of wines by the glass was good. Very friendly bar staff and locals made the bar welcoming. A very interesting old hostelry, with different furniture and a rugby bias on the walls. If I am ever back in this part of the world I will be sure to visit again. Cheers.

We had a yummy Sunday lunch here so was looking forward to a midweek return. I watched a lady, on Sunday, devour her pork belly meal and crunch away on perfectly cooked crackling and wiped her plate clean. So it was an easy choice for me to select this and some sweet potato fries (my fave) and a kale coleslaw (ingenious)! However it started to go downhill here, the chef came out and stood at the bar wanting to be served which wasnt happening, so frustrated, he went behind the bar and helped himself to a pack of pork scratching (interesting I thought- and started to worry)I was right to worry, my pork belly arrived sprinkled with scratchings, I have to say it was the worst pork belly I have eaten. I had to scrape meagre pork off slippery slimy pork fat layers. My partner encouraged me to send it back but I was hungry so ate the mediocre fries (some uncooked). The interesting part is how it was dealt with, I asked a mature chap (thought he was landlord) when collecting the plates (I dont think he is renowned for charm) 'I want you to tell me they are not pork scratchings?' No he said that is crackling, to which we both questioned him again, he muttered I'll go and find out, he returned and mumbled 'no-one is saying anything, but it wont be on the bill' and disappeared. When we went to pay the bill nothing was said by him until we turned to leave when under his breath he said something, I turned and asked him to repeat what he said and he told me that crackling is not on the menu, that is a 'bonus'. I tried to ask him was that really relevant when he most abruptly told me to 'leave it'. We did.Needless to say, we are here for a week or two more and like eating and drinking out, guess where we wont be going.

I am always reluctant to give negative reviews but I have to say that this place did not live up to any of the claims that they make in their publicity. Admittedly, we were there on a Monday evening when most restaurants are slow but this really did not justify the poor quality of food and service we received. They claim to offer the best fish and chips in town but they were nothing other than average with greasy batter and very average chips. Although we were almost the only people eating there, the barman turned away four people on the grounds that they were fully booked. I bet the owner did not know about that!. We must have been subjected to the "B" team but that is no excuse.

The pub remains a beautiful spot with many old paintings and artifacts spread throughout the facility making for a very 'homey' atmosphere. The back garden is absolutely beautiful and it is obvious a lot of work goes into it by someone with a good eye. Came in for a lunch just to try it out. Quite small and tired decor, more just a drinkers pub possibly but they have tried to offer a standard varied menu. Menu just on the blackboard. Initially disappointed with no vegetarian choice, I then spotted a couple of items on the back of the door to the garden, so I chose the cashew nut roast. When our meals arrived we were happy and all seemed fairly good. However, I fared quite badly with the vegetarian meal and had to return my food as the nut burger (not a roast at all) was completely hard, overcooked and mostly inedible. Although I was provided with a much better cooked one later, I was amazed that the cook hadn't noticed that he or she had killed the first one. The other meals we had were pretty good but I feel that this pub would do better serving slightly more basic food and charging less because I have eaten a lot better elsewhere and for less. There is a beer garden at the rear which looked quite pleasant and would be good for larger groups possibly and for people with dogs, who are welcomed. The only reason I wouldn't return is because of value for money and I don't think this pub really delivers very well on that overall (decor, atmosphere, food, service). With a sandwich and a pint in their garden I would probably have been happier.

(£55) and then being told we had only put £45 down by the barmaid when she came back from the till wasn't good. Must be the magical atmosphere that makes £10 notes disappear between the table and the till! She was having none of it (my mate had counted it twice), so we won't be going back and we'll be making sure everyone else knows about it too. Says something when the table behind we're complaining about her undercharging for wine, then coming back demanding more...

Had a very enjoyable dinner here with my family. Food is quite plain and simple but a nice change from the usual gastropubs we visit. Staff were pleasant and welcoming. A lovely old pub inside and out.

We were looking for somewhere with decent food at a reasonable price on a Friday night in Woodford in June. Also wanted fish, gluten free.Bell was buzzing with locals, food was very good though not excessively cheap (to us northerners ) and local cider was excellent. Great atmosphere.Highly recommended!

A really nice historic pub, lots of atmosphere and excellent beer. The food offering is displayed on a blackboard, quite a short lost, always a good sign. The signature dish appears to be loin of Lowestoft cod, and what a dish. Without doubt the best fish and chips I have had in years, the fish moist and tasty, the chips cooked to perfection. The fact that it seems to run out quite early in the evening indicated it really is fresh, not from the freezer.

This is not my closest pub in Woodbridge but it is definately worth the extra walk, great pub lovely food and great for value! Really friendly staff and I love new decoration done when the new Landlords Chris and Tom took over a year ago! Really good beer and a beautifully kept beer garden in the back! Would definately advise a visit there!

We were drawn to this place because it looked interesting, had a quirky name and welcomed pets. It is a truly authentic pub with well kept beer and very tasty food at very reasonable prices; it is not some overpriced gastro joint. We received a very warm welcome from the bar man and landlord, who recommended a very good, unknown to me, Greene King ale; how nice to find a non -Adnams pub in this neck of the woods! S had an excellent tomato pasta dish and I had a really good Steak and Kidney pud- we had no room for a dessert. The pub exuded a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere. As we left the barman invited us to their Sunday roast- how I wish we had gone instead of suffering an overpriced, tasteless roast at a well known " Larder" up the road! The dog agreed.

Decided to give this pub a try when me and my mother fancied going for a spot of lunch, was debating between this pub and another local. Oh how I'm glad I picked this pub. The pub itself is very open, yet cosy. It looks as if its one of the many that were built from the remnaints of ships, and the decor inside is very interesting. Lovely art of the local area and lots of old relics like old bank documents from the mid 19th century. The staff were incredibly friendly and made me feel at ease right away, very polite and easy to talk to. When the food came, oh how I was impressed, they spared no expense in getting the it cooked and presented as perfectly as possible. I genuinely don't think I've ever had such a nice looking meal in my life, and the taste more than matched it. A dish from heaven; and don't even get me started on the desert. Now, I know you probably imagine a meal of this calibre would cost you an arm and a leg, but given the average prices in today's economy I'd say this was slightly on the cheaper side. I won't go into exactly figures, but given that we had two meals, two deserts, and three drinks, I'd say it came to a very competitive amount indeed. I was expecting to pay a fair sum more. Overall then, a very interesting and lovely pub, with food you'll be hard pressed to beat in the local area at these prices. Genuinely the best lunch hour I've had in a very, very long time. Five stars from my Mum and I. :)

Family get together, 17 in total, all ordered separately yet served together within minutes. Food was of a very high standard but very reasonably priced. Some excellent real ales and I sampled Proper Job very tasty. In fact proper job was exactly what the landlord and his staff achieved. Would definitely go there again.

From outside the pub looks great, very old English. My friend and I received a very warm welcome. We chose Mexican burritos, which were served with chunky chips, salad, sour cream and salsa. The food was hot, delicious and it arrived within a reasonable time. We asked for extra sour cream and salsa, which was brought out to us. We sat outside in the garden area which was lovely - wild looking, natural and like sitting in someone's back garden! Good value, oldy worldy pub, would definitely visit again.

Good pub, good, friendly staff and their fish and chips are to die for. Well worth a visit, especially if you can't be bothered to deep fry yourself! You might be lucky and just get a table but could be wiser to book.

Apart from the great beer, the great food and the great atmosphere, the historic building, the service and the large garden, it is one of only two pubs in Woodbridge (the other is a long way from the town centre) which has an accessible toilet! Bar staff will direct you around the back for access to the pub via the garden (or find your own way). Ramped access to this stunning old building. A treat in WoodbridgeThis is a pub that literally has it all (unless you want fruit machines and loud music) Love it.

A great old , very friendly, pub. Unusually, it has many of the traditional pub games. Bar Billiards, skittles etc etc. Great food with plenty of choice. It has saved it's traditional charm, unlike many pubs that have 'modernised'.I loved the place.

I visited this establishment with my husband and family on Bank Holiday Monday on a family day out with the intention of enjoying a pleasant lunch in the restaurant.Unfortunately, we were refused entry, as our party included a young baby. We offered to leave the pushchair outside and carry the baby, either in our arms, or in her carseat, but this was also unacceptable to the member of staff. He wasn't even pleasant and polite in refusing our entry. As we were leaving, another family were walking in with a baby, probably to receive the same 'welcome'. We will certainly give this establishment a wide berth in future! We eventually went to the Wilford Bridge in Melton, where we received a much warmer welcome and a lovely meal, which made up for the cold reception and rudeness at Ye Olde Bell and Steelyard

Very nice "British Pub" with no modern furniture or additions, very warm and friendly and a pleasure to visit. Had lunch there and enjoyed it very much , well presented and plentiful. The owners have obviously put a lot into the establishment and they deserve to do well out of it. i hope the summer brings in the punters for them.

I was on a pub crawl of Woodbridge and Ipswich and was pleasntly surprised to see that the pub is in such a lovely building. As it was cold outside, it was nice to enter to a wall of heat from a traditional coal fire, and to receive a warm welcome from both the bar staff and the pub's dogs. As it was quiet, I had a great chat with the staff about the town, the pub and the dogs. The beer was in top condition, and although I never ate, another person in the bar did and it looked and smelt great. I was then given directions to the other pubs in the town, and even information for later on in the day in Ipswich. Superb!!

Very disappointed with the sandwiches, bread was very dry and the smoked salmon bagel was frozen! BLT contains cold bacon rashers. All in all - an expensive, disappointing lunch. Will not frequent the cafe again .

A proper pub, good friendly service , well kept beers with an ever changing guest ale, no food just good conversation in a pleasant environment. If you long for a traditional well run pub serving good ale the Old Mariners is for you.
