Very disappointed with the sandwiches, bread was very dry and the smoked salmon bagel was frozen! BLT contains cold bacon rashers. All in all - an expensive, disappointing lunch. Will not frequent the cafe again .

I went in for a quick bite to eat, once I sat down the depressed waitress said extremely rudely "DO YOU WANT THE LUNCH MENU OR NOT!" I replied with a simply yes please, and she stormed off. I then saw her staring at me from the front and started pointing as well, I hate rude people. She then brought out the food and carelessly tossed the plate on the table and found some hair in my smashed avocado. After this I went for the classic coffee and walnut cake which you can never go wrong with but unfortunately found the bottom of the cake cut off and dismantled. Overall a very disappointing trip to what could have been a nice birthday.

Dropped in for brunch. Have visited before on a few occasions but today it was really disappointing. Ordered salmon and scrambled egg on toast and smashed avocado and poached egg on toast with tea for two Pot of tea for two didn’t fill the two cups provided. Hot water was brought when requested but I wouldn’t think you’d have to ask. One piece of toast with a mean smearing of avocado and two poached eggs. Salmon and eggs similar. Food was good quality but for the price, I expected more. Had to order a portion of toast (extra) to supplement the order I guess the location provides a steady stream of punters so they don’t need to rely on return business? Won’t be rushing back

This restaurant is situated in a gallery above a large homeware shop. It looks lovely, with nice tables and chairs, the staff are friendly and efficient, and the food is delicious. However, as a disabled person I did find it a little difficult to access: there is a lift but halfway up I read a notice that says “no mobility scooters”, so I was a bit worried about that, and there was no way I could have got it into the restaurant itself so I had to find somewhere more or less out of the way and shuffle to a table. Personally, I also found the piped music uncomfortable.

The staff in this cafe are under too much pressure. They were at all times polite but rushed off their feet. A long wait for food, which was only ok when it arrived. We shared a scone after eating lunch. The first scone was rock solid! Too long in the microwave! There was no quibble about getting us another (much nicer) one but no apology either. Not fair on the staff or us.

Wanted to grab a quick lunch so thought we would give it a try. Found a table and waitress came across and barked at us did we want to see the lunch menu, which we replied we did. She then returned and gave us a, in my opinion a very sparse menu and stated that the first two meals on the menu were off. She returned after a couple of minutes and said "what do you want" I said that I was still making up my mind as nothing really jumped out at me as being what I wanted. She looked rather bored and said we could try the Granary Tea Room if there was nothing we wanted. Not wanting to stay where it was evident I wasn't wanted we left. I hate rude people but she did me a real favour as when we came out we found The Plough and Sail where we enjoyed an excellent meal, which very good service.

Eaten here several times over the years and this is the first time I’ve come away mildly disappointed. Service a bit disinterested even though not busy. I had baked haddock which was ok, a fair bit of skin and bone, and the accompanying poached egg was well cooked ( being kind). As we shop here regularly will no doubt try again, but there are so many excellent eateries in the area I may not.

Arrived at 2.30-ish for coffee and cake. After finding a table we were approached by a top-knotted bloke who obviously does not like having to deal with customers. He was very short with us, seemed disgruntled when we only wanted a piece of cake rather than full-on lunches, and left another server to actually bring over our order. She was just as disinterested and practically threw the plate and saucers onto our table. None of the three servers cracked a smile while we were there, and when I went to pay I was informed there was a queue to pay, and I wasn't at the head of it. All in all, a very disappointing experience peopled by rude and arrogant staff. And having watched their interactions with other customers, they weren't picking on us, they were offhand with everyone. If you want a friendly cafe to spend your time in, this is NOT it!

Enjoyed the coffee and a substantial Welsh rarebit with accompanying onion chutney and salad. Partners cake very dry but replaced with excellent lemon drizzle cake. Serious staffing problems meant that there was a reduced lunchtime menu and Although order taken fairly quickly and not too long a wait for drinks there was a very very long delay in getting food. Went there with my family. Not incredibly busy but we took a table with stuff still on it. Not a problem so far but a lot of flies flying about annoyingly. Drinks and cake menu very very limited. Cake of the day - ask the server. Yeah ok fair enough it's not the largest of places to hang whiteboards etc. Coffee and walnut! Lovely. As we waited trying to get rid of the flies around was just an every 5 second job! Cake arrives, definitely not coffee and walnut. I think the chef needs to re look at his recipes. Walnut sure but certainly no coffee. And maybe what looked like poppy seeds or coffee grounds? Either way stoggy dry cake is what we had. Coffee was good but it certainly helped making the cake taste of coffee and actually help it go down.

Sat down Saturday at table , cafe was very busy but had x 3 tables empty that were reserved ! What can only be described as a male bearded waiter then informed us to move to other seats at the table to let others sit with us , we said we would remain in our current seats but would welcome others to sit with us if the need arose , cue frosty look, same waiter returned and then asked for my order , I asked for soup , he then stated that soup would only be served at 12 onwards , when I asked him what time it was he stated that he didn't know ! ( I checked it was 11 50) at this point you get the feeling that you are not welcome and we decided to leave , I'm sure thats what he wanted to release the seats for others , I don't get it , we want to buy food you have seats yet we are not welcome and yet you had three tables reserved and empty in a busy period , no way to run a business in my opinion - the discussion re soup at 11 50 ! why issue a menu with food on that you don't have avaialble - lots to learn

This cafe is set upstairs in the ever popular Snape Maltings. I mistakenly went up to the counter to order, and was abruptly told to find a seat and my order would be taken, by a mature waitress. I ordered the all day English breakfast. The bacon was not freshly cooked, but had been waiting around for a while & was tough and dry; the sausage contained too much rusk; the black pudding was the most tasteless I have ever eaten and the egg was snotty. Altogether quite unpleasant. The pot of tea would have benefited from a jug of hot water.

My wife, family and I would regularly go here for brunch. Not anymore. On a recent visit, we arrived for lunch to discover the restaurant busy. We waited in line on the stair-case. A cold and unwelcoming woman, I guess the cafe manager / owner, told us there were no tables. We asked could we continue to wait; she replied, "no, you can't wait there". We asked could we put our names on a list, and wait downstairs to be called when a table becomes available? "No", she replied, "we aren't that sort of restaurant". I'm still not sure what type of restaurant they are - obviously one that doesn't want customers. Fine, we won't be back.

Unfortunately the one let down is that you can order cakes but these are not on display and whilst they may be fine you have to ask about them and we were not offered a view so we did not purchase. Pricing of food and drinks reflects the general visitor profile we guess and lots of Chelsea Tractor Driver types frequent the site particularly during school holidays, when unruly young children can be a hazard. However, I had the Goats cheese, sweet potato and wilted spinach. My partner had a selection of bread, Olives, chutney, balsamic vinegar dip with a side salad. We both enjoyed what we had, but I felt my portion was a little small. I would have liked a sweet, but they all looked a little sickly for me. I recently visited this cafe which is trying to be something it is definitely not! The setting is its best point. The staff are reasonably friendly albeit rather slow with service. I had a ploughman's at £11.50 rather expensive i thought so perhaps it was going to be top notch. Oh dear, what a disappointment there were three very small pieces of cheese, one very small piece of an acceptable Stilton, a flavourless slice of Brie and a wafer thin piece of Cheddar type cheese, I tried this cheese and it had a horrible flavour, when I turned it over all I had was the rind. There was absolutely nothing of any substance served it was just presented to look pretty, which is fine if the flavours are fantastic or the price reflects the meanness of the dish. I have only made one visit but it was so bad I will not be making another.

Over the years my wife and I have eaten at Cafe 1885 several times, and have always been pleased, sometimes even delighted, by the quality of the food on offer. Unlike, one recent reviewer we have always found the staff to be helpful, informed and pleasant. The menu is usually restricted to a select number of mains and dessert courses. It is all the better for this since this enables what is on offer to be of such a consistently high standard. I should stress that although limited the menu usually has something for most - my wife, for example, is a vegetarian and she has always found something to like. Finally, I should also stress that the menu, given its prices, offers astonishingly good quality for money - we look forward to our next trip!

Sadly everyone, I have bad news. I came to this cafe with the hope of a lovely breakfast. This is what actually happened.I'm afraid to have to report that my extra sausage was £1.50!!! I hadn't realised sausages were as expensive as gold in Suffolk. Then the cafe proceeded to cremate my poor premium sausage and this thoroughly upset me. Meanwhile my friend had asked for his missing tomato and I ordered an extra scrambled egg. More fool me. This came in at a whopping £5.95. Clearly we forgot to learn our lesson that the food here is apparently made of gold. Not good value for money. Not good.A shame.

We ordered hot drinks that came nice and quickly and were well made and tasty. Top marks for the Mocha! We then ordered food. My sister in law had the fish platter, my wife the ploughman's and I had a full English breakfast. The food was brought to the table promptly, and my full English was piping hot. Our food was well presented. Both my sister and wife enjoyed their meals, however.................My full English was too over done for my liking. I was "on the fence" regards to sending my dish back to be re cooked. The ingredients looked good enough but it was just too over done. Dry Bacon, frazzled sausage and not a bit of runny egg yolk to dip my sausage in to. I was on the verge of complaining and asking for it to be re done but decided against it. What stopped me?????I would have been eating after my companions. We finished up with Carrot Cake all round. Top marks for that; delicious!Did I complain? No I didn't. Would I give this place another go?Yes I would. My companions were happy with their dishes, and to be honest I only marked down due to my personal preference on how a full English should be.

Visited Snape Malting's to look round the shops and farmers market. There are a few cafes there but we chose Cafe1885 as we wanted breakfast. The cafe itself is upstairs but there is a lift, however the cafe itself us tight for space as it's quite small. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The prices are slightly high but thus isn't a greasy spoon and the quality of the food and drink was excellent.Real loose leaf tea with extra hot water on request was a treat. The full English was very good the only issue with it was the mushroom was dry and overcooked. That said the sausage and bacon were excellent. The selection of toast and marmalade was equally good. If in the area and looking to treat yourself to an excellent breakfast you won't do any better than Cafe 1885.

The first place on my list for brunch when I visit Suffolk is always Cafe 1885. I have my 'usual' smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast and I'm never disappointed. Great freshly prepared food and excellent service. We always go back for more whenever we're in the region.

We arrived at 3.30pm tables were pretty full and those that were free were uncleared. Were were just there for tea and cake and service was efficient and friendly. Not a huge choice as items were already sold out. Quality loose tea was fab the scones were ok but expected better and they were a little overdone. Personally I prefer clotted cream rather than whipped cream or "chantilly" as they called it. I would visit again but probably give the scone a miss.

This is a fairly small cafe within the Snape Maltings complex. The menu is quite small but the ingredients are very good. The service was excellent. My only complaint would be that there is no disabled access, which, being upstairs, surprised me.

I went on a trip to Snape Maltings and ended up having lunch at this establishment. There are several options and I just picked this one pretty much at random. It is small, upstairs, and overlooks a shopping area. Pleasant enough. The menu offered a reasonable choice of meals from light to more substantial. I went for a pork chop. Unfortunately I hadn't spotted the sign saying that the kitchen was short staffed that day due to sickness and that delays were likely until after I had ordered. I had to wait about half an hour. The chop was good with spectacular crackling. It was served with some colcannon and creamy sauce. I thought the menu had mentioned broccoli too, but anyhow there was no other accompanying veg which was a shame. The creamy sauce was a bit OTT, particularly with just the potato. But still it was a good place of food. The service was good considering it was full by the time I was leaving and the reduced kit hen staff.

Lovely place. Simple menu with some interesting options. The all day breakfast is always good, as are the cakes. The coffee at the Pump Street Bakery downstairs is better though. Friendly and hard working manager and staff, which makes all the difference. Cafe is on a mezzanine in the shop, but is well furnished and comfortable. It's a busy place, so try and visit at quieter times of day or year. Recommended.

Have been here many times over recent years. consistently good: interesting and varied fresh lunch menu, good homemade cakes (generous portion of lemon ginger was the cake of the day at £2.95 this time, and jolly good it was too). Only pity is that it's indoors, upstairs in the large shop, and without any view of the river and beyond. So most ideal on a chilly or wet day. Despite the shop prices ( not cheap!) the cafe prices are very reasonable for the good quality . In our experience it's a popular place ( deservedly) - can get crowded, best to pick your time carefully and avoid peek times,

Up a flight of steps from the food hall. Nice setting with wooden tables and chairs. Average coffee but some decent snacks available. Nice place for a rest from touring the shops

The cafe is on the mezzanine floor of a large homeware store but don't let this put you off. The food is far better than you would expect and the cafe is efficiently managed with capable young staff.

We were visiting the malting as part of a day trip to Suffolk, we found the cafe by chance. The setting is lovely and our waitress was great. We both had the crab with new potatoes. The portion size was excellent, more than either of us could eat and we both have healthy appetites. I would certainly recommend this place for a casual lunch.

My wife and I visited Cafe 1885 at lunchtime on Saturday 25th March 2017 after a very enjoyable walk/stroll to and from the lovely Iken Church. Tired and in need of new energy we went to Cafe 1885 expecting it to be very busy as the Maltings were very crowded everywhere on such a lovely Spring day. Although fairly busy we were guided to a vacant and newly cleared and cleaned table, grateful to be able to sit down. What followed was a thoroughly delightful experience. To describe the service and food as outstanding is an under-statement. Service was extremely quick and efficient, our choice of food was served in very quick time, a Full English Breakfast and a BLT. It was superb, very tasty bacon, sausage and thick tasty fried bread.Watching the goings on around us, we couldn't be other than impressed with the hard work of the staff who were very quick to clear and clean vacated tables and full of smiles as they served customers.A very enjoyable experience, thank you to all the staff there, we will return.

On a visit to the gorgeous Snape Maltings today, we decided to have a cuppa and a cake at Cafe 1885. When we realised they served an extensive and interesting lunch menu, we changed our plans from eating in Aldeburgh later on in the day. Service a tad on the slow side, forgiveable at a busy lunchtime service. Due to the wait we ordered drinks and meals all at once. Two ordered a stuffed chicken breast dish, one the halloumi burger and one the calves liver. Cutlery and napkins were delivered in a pile on the table for us to distribute no smiles or dialogue from the waitress. (My two sons even raised their eyebrows). Then after another wait the food began to arrive. The two chicken dishes first, both breasts were overlooked and dry, the halloumi burger next, this was good and then after a delay the eagerly awaited calves liver dish. I began to tuck in and was perplexed quickly of the difficulty in cutting the liver. I eventually cut through to find the liver (both pieces) other than the outside were completely raw! I called over the cheerful (being ironic) waitress and pointed it out and she said she'd speak to the chef. She came back and apologised and confirmed she too could see it was raw and a fresh meal was being prepared. This eventually came and this time the chef had managed to cook the dish. I ate it and had it been the first attempt it was nice, however having had the raw version one I didn't particularly enjoy it. Plus everyone else had long finished their meals. Now we come to paying. We eventually realised we had to pay at the counter. We asked for the bill, a very abrupt young waitress barked a number at me, to which I asked for a breakdown. I also asked had I been charged for the liver and again she abruptly told me "yes, you had another one didn't you?" To which I replied "having been served raw meat and the delays ensued and the spoiling of our dining experience I am amazed it appears in your calculations (still no physical) bill had arrived. Upshot the liver was removed from the bill, rude young waitress, still rude. Another one mouthing to us "sorry I didn't realise you'd been charged". To sum it up, employ a chef that can literally cook food and send your waiting staff on a smiling and courtesy course. We will not be returning and will be passing on our experience to our friends and colleagues.

A lovely morning in a lovely place! We went for coffee and two members of the party ordered food - one soup and one rarebit. Coffees came and were consumed, no sign of food. When we enquired after half an hour, we were told that "there are other people before you!" Clearly we should have thought about that before we ordered. And indeed there was a table where we shortly saw two plates being brought out. Food - when it did arrive - was nice but we were put firmly in our place for our presumptions.

This is somewhere we visit on a regular visit and always have a hot chocolate, Believe me, this is a hot chocolate like no other. I don't know how they do it but it is hot, full of good quality chocolate flavour and even the frothy milk is a consistency which no other can seem to achieve. Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Costa Coffee etc are nowhere in the race to achieve this perfection. That's why we keep comiing back. Well done you

After a nice breezy walk by the river we popped up to Cafe 1885 for a nice warming cup of coffee and a pot of tea. Once again the cafe was very busy, but we were seated and served quickly overlooking the shop. The coffee and tea very good and the waiting staff were very friendly and attentive as before, even though the place was full to the brim and they were serving people non stop. Excellent drinks and service, very pleased, we will certainly visit again.

The setting looking over the beautiful homeware is unique and very special. The food was very scrummy with good choices, al day breakfast always suits us. Our child was also very well catered for. The staff were very kind and went out of their way for a few of our child friendly requests. We will be back many more times.

Service prompt and efficient. Leek and potato soup was pleasant enough but the accompanying slices of granary bread were on the dry side. The special cake of the day was dreadful! Stale and dry. Disappointing.

Yes we were served. Just. No real conversation from any of the 3 staff. Not a smile. Not a greeting, nothing. Poor poor service. I am a local. Snape is great for tourism. This is a good example of how to deter tourism. The food was OK at best. A fried egg should not be hard in the middle and brown and crispy all around the edges. 3 pieces of bacon between two meals, one over done, two barely done. Avoid.

Having decided to go to Snape Maltings for the day, it made sense to try Cafe 1885 for a spot of lunch after we had spent some time browsing in the excellent Homes & Interiors hall. The cafe is nicely situated on the mezzanine floor above the hall & we were looking forward to our lunch. It wasn't particularly busy but service was slow & not particularly friendly. As a strict vegetarian, I struggled to find anything I liked & in the end plumped for the selection of dips with an assortment of bread. When it finally came, the bread selection was disappointing & rather dry & the dips didn't really taste of much. My sister chose one of the day's specials - mushrooms on sour dough - but although she ate it, it was nothing to write home about apparently.Whilst I couldn't say our experience was dreadful, we felt nothing about it was anything we could recommend & so will probably give this cafe a miss should we visit again.

Having visited Snape for some final Xmas present ideas we enjoyed a great lunch and coffee at the restaurant situated upstairs on site. We were greeted quickly and after a peruse of the menu our orders were taken. The Welsh Rarebit was delicious with accompanying onion chutney and rocket salad and the coffee was also very good.

The quality of a so-called fruit cake when I visited yesterday was awful. It came as a slab of dry and tasteless sponge cake with large quantity of green glace cherries - sunk to the bottom - yuk! Really disappointing for Suffolk.

We were there specifically to track down some pottery (and we did) and decided to stay for lunch in the cafe. Nicely located on a mezzanine above the store there's always something (or someone) to look at. Nice simple menu, not too fussy, but with everything you could want for lunch and the odd creative twist. I had salmon on a bed of potatoes crushed with chestnuts; delicious. If you're visiting Snape Maltings you'd be mad not to eat here.

A proper pub, good friendly service , well kept beers with an ever changing guest ale, no food just good conversation in a pleasant environment. If you long for a traditional well run pub serving good ale the Old Mariners is for you.

Tried to arrange our engagement party here and is the worst communication and service from the event organiser I have ever received. Constantly ignored even when it got to the point of going into the sea you to speak to the lady who organises. Had to keep chasing for responses and in the end was just ignored and never got back to. Is a real shame as we really liked the cafe there but will not be returning after the way we were treated.

Delicious Sunday lunch, piping hot, perfect Yorkshire puddings and lovely fresh veg. Attentive, polite young staff. Best thing of all no loud intrusive “background” music that makes it impossible to have a conversation with your fellow diners. Will definitely be back. Thank you.
