Nice cosy small pub on the most famous street in York.

It's a wonderful place to have a drink, especially if you like craft beers.

Lovely historic pub with good ales and live music. Just a shame they have put up the eyesore black grates outside which contains the music, would do far more business and have a much better atmosphere and contribution to their historic site if they opened things up

Food was very good and very reasonable for york. Service was good and staff very friendly. Option to sit inside or outside in the market, undercover. Just one downside, toilets need updating.

Found on a walk exploring york, upon arrival we was greeted by local gentleman Kev. Helped us pick our beer with our breakfast very friendly chap. Quick Service. Very friendly feel as each person walked in said hello. Would definitely return. Breakfast was delicious. Thank you

Freya and Amelia were so lovely, as well as the other patrons we were chatting with. The staff are a credit to the establishment and they made us feel welcome, asked us our drink preferences, and chatted to us. We had a really lovely time and would recommend a visit to anyone visiting York.

A nice cozy place to have your pint

The Shambles Tavern is a traditional cosy two room to pub with a covered outside seating area overlooking the Shambles market. There is a wide choice of draught beers including six hand pulled cask conditioned real ales the ones we tried were in were in excellent condition. We didn't have time to try the food, but the menu looked very tempting.

We love this pub. Fabulous staff, great beer.

Great little pub. Service was fantastic.

I played two games of chess with one of the regulars, winning the first, but losing the second. Diplomatically, we kept it at that. However, it was the beginning of a long conversation with a whole host of lovely York people, laughing with nice music in the background and fresh pints strewn about. I would love to become a regular here.

Hemos estado en York muchas veces, pero esta fue nuestra primera visita a este pub histórico situado en The Shambles. Es fácil perderse la pequeña entrada principal con las multitudes habituales en The Shambles. Sin embargo, también tiene una entrada en la parte trasera desde la zona de la Plaza del Mercado con asientos exteriores. El desayuno y el café se sirven toda la mañana. Cuenta con una buena gama de cervezas tradicionales, personal agradable y eficiente, así como gente amable. Disfrutamos de nuestra visita.

Este es un pub peculiar. Entró vía mercado parecía muy básico pero debe ser tan viejo. El bar tiene más latas de cerveza que morrisons. Se sentó en barriles con cojines y miró hacia el desorden. Ambiente tranquilo muy agradable para una pinta rápida antes de ir de compras.

Have a singer on Wednesday to Sunday we visited on the Saturday and sunday evening the Saturday was great atmosphere and was busy the Sunday was flat as no one in felt a little sorry for the singer as only a few people in but was the second Sunday in the new year. Good beer selection and would recommend

Bonito pub en una calle muy concurrida. Este es un pub que acepta perros, así que podríamos sentarnos en el calor para tomar algo de almuerzo. El personal es amable y servicial (uno agarrando un tazón de agua para nuestro perro) Yo estaba contento con el servicio. Pedimos pescado con patatas fritas dos veces y desafortunadamente nos decepcionaron. La comida era mediocre que carecía de cualquier sabor (en particular el pescado) me pareció muy básico para el precio punto £ 14. 95 y la salsa tártara tenía un sabor extraño, así que no podíamos comer eso. Un pequeño cargo por servicio de £ 2 / 3 fue añadido por el restaurante, que fue una sorpresa. Recomendaría ir a tomar una copa y obtener comida en otro lugar.

Excellent staff were very welcoming and promptly took our food and drink order. Food arrived all together and within 10 minutes, even on a very busy day. Excellent visit and reasonable prices considering we were right in the middle of the tourist area.

A great hidden pub on the shambles which has live music most nights.

Came here a few times for a drink. Good selection of traditional cask and keg beer and some cans! Also a heated outside area

Nice little tucked away pub. We had the mulled wine, far superior (and cheaper) to the markets served in a tall glass, delicious. Has warm room to sit in or a covered are in the market square.

One of our favourite pubs in York. We visit on a somewhat regular basis & the selection of beers/ciders is vast. The tavern is dog friendly which is always a bonus but you can’t smoke in the market beer garden. We struggled to get a table (everywhere) for midnight on NYE 2023 and presumed the tavern would be closed by then. The lovely staff at the Shambles Tavern accommodated our group in the back room & we’ll always remember their kindness. The breakfast is gorgeous too & is always our first York pub crawl stop.

Pint and atmosphere was brilliant.

If you like beer and a great atmosphere then this is the place to go. Singer on, outside 4 nights a week too that adds to how great this place is. 6 ales on tap!!!

Popped In for a drink whilst in the area, their own brew bitter was really nice, the price was reasonable considering localatiin.

Very fun evening listening to great music and meeting new friends! Excellent cocktails, the apple cider was refreshing and the house ale was delicious. The musician played Dire Straits upon request. A great time.

A fab pub in York! Lovely settings, friendly and helpful staff, tasty food and generous portion sizes! Also a great selection of gluten free beers (and the food all clearly marked GF). Would deffo recommend!

Good selection of draught and bottled Beers, let down by the lukewarm attitude of the staff, which changed from moody to gregarious when their mates came in and hogged the bar area talking volubly as if no-one else was there. It's a shame as the bar it's self is an amazing place ruined by a clique.

A friend& I went to the tavern today 3/8/24 for a light breakfast, we sat outside for 15+ minutes, nobody came with the menus so I went inside to let a member of staff we would like the menus, a girl with glasses on wearing a black top didn’t speak just made a sound, we then waited another 20 minutes then a guy came out he said we had a 20 minute wait for food, so my friend& I left in disgust after waiting so long to be served, the female with the black top needs to be trained in customer care, her attitude is unacceptable,I did complain to the guy who came out about her attitude he said “ sorry& went back inside.

Called in with family today and was served by Jamie who could not have been more helpful and also a regular called John? Who was also so helpful with advice as to where to. Visit during our short stay.we will be back.

Brilliant charismatic pub great beers great staff too

Nice little place,soon got full over lunch. Me and a friend had the burger with proper chips,excellent. My wife and friend had the cold pork pie and mushy peas and said not very good. Too many mushy peas and too salty,pie was cold as though it had come straight out of the fridge rather than let it stand at room temperature for a little while. Overall good service and bill wasnt excessive so dont want to make it sound bad,would go again if visiting york just wont have the pie and peas.

We stopped here several times on our flying visit to York and each time we had a great experience A tiny pub in the shambles that served local ales The food looked tempting too and comments from fellow customers were positive too We will definitely be back

Favourite Pub in York. We didn't eat here but went in for drink and the live music. First night was The Mechanics and the next night Bash. Superb evenings, would recommend getting there a bit early for a table at the back. Music starts "early" 6:30/7 and can finish around 9:30. Staff were really friendly and the prices very reasonable also.

A very busy pub situated in The Shambles area of York. 6 hand pumps of beer, along with bottles and cans that can be drunk inside. Bar snacks are also available. Food is available and although I didn't order any what I saw looked really good There is outside seating for those warmer days that face a bustling market place. The Shambles pub is also dog friendly. At the time of visiting it was very busy. But, the staff were coping really well and were also friendly. Definitely worth a passing visit if you're in York for the weekend.

Disgusted at the staff and customers smoking in the doorway. Verbally abusing people waiting in the ghost merchant queue that complained about the smoke!

Visited here twice, once for breakfast and another time for lunch. Great wee pub, you can sit upstairs or through the back and weather permitting outside looking into Shambles Market. Attentive staff who gave good advice on the local rums and gins available. Breakfast was very tasty, we opted for the small breakfast but there’s also plenty of it. Good quality and very tasty food. Had lunch here too before we got our train. Opted for the sharing bowl of Dirty Fries, like breakfast it was a good sized portion, enough for 3 of us. Food cooked to perfection, cheese, onion, bacon and chips - what’s not to like 😋 Both times we got a seat at the window upstairs, great place to people watch as the Shsmbles is such a busy place. especially the queue for The York Ghost Merchants 👻 Definitely recommend this place for food or even just a place to have a rest and a drink

A nice little tavern. Unfortunately no smoking or vaping allowed in the "outside" area which was slightly annoying, but rules are rules. The Mechanics were playing and they were generally a decent covers band! Hopefully they never played "Sweet Child O'Mine" just out of spite after the dude was requesting it after every song 🤣

Had a very enjoyable lunch here on Monday. Had the ploughman's sandwich which was delicious and great value for money. My friend had the ploughman's lunch that she throughly enjoyed. The staff were friendly and provided an excellent service. Really loved the atmosphere. This was my second visit and looking forward to visiting again next year.

Fantastic food, fair priced and service was incredible, served by a very attentive lady with brown/red hair, she ensured we had everything we needed and couldn’t do more for us, the salad was full of interesting things, far from plain with a beautiful dressing; the toastie was absolutely lovely too! It's my favourite place to visit in york. Staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. Great band on Saturday night in bear garden and beer and spirits to fit every taste.

The Shambles Tavern is the only pub on York's historic street and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was just another gift shop. Don't be fooled though as this is a great little café styled tavern with a small bar to the front, a nice low beamed back room, upstairs space and an inventive beer garden under the cover of the Shambles Market. They can even close off the outside space in the evening for their regular live music. The Shambles Tavern is certainly more than meets the eye. With a range of their own branded beers brewed by RUDGATE BREWERY and two guest pumps there's plenty of cask to go at even before you are tempted by the wall of cans behind the bar. Prices are a little higher than average but worth it for the unique location. We had great friendly service and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed away from the hustle and bustle of the Shambles. This is one tavern that is definitely worth visiting.

We nipped into here for some lunch. I had the burger and fries and one had a toastie and the other 2 had sandwiches. We all enjoyed our food. The rhubarb cider was lovely. Very busy as the Christmas markets are on but we managed to get a table

I have just had one of the best night's out in York the band bang bang bang we're playing, the music the atmosphere was fantastic if you get chance go there music bands play most nights so much fun for all.

Tried to go in sat night, 2 couples after we had just had a meal round the corner. Place looked empty , sign said open but he told us full to capacity, bar lad didn’t believe we were from York, we’ve grown up and lived in York all our lives, he said I sounded like a cockney! This restaurant I have visited a number of times with friends as we live in York, it is situated in a good place for people to drink& eat, central to all amenities,on our last visit we went for breakfast, we had to wait for 10 minute's for the waitress to bring the menu's my friend asked her 3 time’s,she seemed to be more interested in other people entering the restaurant after us, the girl in question slim brown curly hair tied in a pony tail with glasses, she made our visit Very uncomfortable, she certainly needs training in how to respect customers& loose the bad attitude, one of the young guys came to our table he was Very polite so the girl in question should make notes from him how to be more polite instead of moody.

Lovely and cosy sat outside even in September and the local pigeon came and joined us. He is called Fat Ted 😂 Don't know why !?!?!?

A lovely little find in Shambles Market. Excellent choice of beers - even Gluten Free beer which my husband was happy about! Food was great and the bar manager is excellent!! Has a great cosy atmosphere and would highly recommend.

Must visit in York City Centre!! A wide variety of ales, beers, ciders, and liquors. The staff was friendly and courteous. Prices are reasonable and are similar to other pubs. Didn't rate the food due to not purchasing
