My partner and I visited the area to see family and popped in for a drink on Christmas Eve. It was lovely to see so many people in a small village pub! We had a gin and tonic and pint of john smiths and it came to £7(ish)... compared to prices down south it felt like we had stolen the drinks! Good atmosphere, nice fire in the main bar with some seating too. There is a separate room for dining and also a pool table. Lovely village pub!

The Jolly has had a mixed history, not all good, but the current landlord is really trying to make a go of it. It retains the aura of a village pub, dark beams, rough walls and small rooms, the bar and a small restaurant area. We visited on a weekday evening, two couples, looking for good food and a swift pint or two with wine for the ladies. Entering the fairly busy bar we found a table, enquired about food and bought a round of drinks. The ladies had red, it came as small bottles of Javk Rabbit, no proper bottles yet, I suppose they're get measure of their customers needs, a pint of Fosters and one of John Smith's.. they had a guest ale Timmy Taylor's, but it was the fruity one, not my taste. Food ordered, into the restaurant area, 6 tables for 4, starters of battered prawns, very nice. Onto mains, ladies on the really nice Steak and Ale pies, gents a burger with bacon and cheese, and first and chips. The chips were proper home made one (triple cooked), the pies were individual made to a recipe Jamie the chef has used for years ...don't change it mate, it's perfect. The burger again hand made ( no bought in frozen junk here), the fish fried to perfection. Everyone was very happy with their meals... did I say the burger came in a proper bun/roll/bap none of that sweet brioche rubbish! Into the beer garden to allow food to settle (there's a servicing hatch/bar there too), for another couple of reds and a lager, lime and soda for me...designated driver. In conclusion, food great, service great, surroundings a work in progress ...but its early days, we wish them well and will be back for another of Jamie's meals.

Service was very good & food fabulous value, no main meal over £8.95. Small menu means the quality is excellent, good pub food, choices such as fish & chips, steak pie, gammon, burgers & for veggies the current choice an amazingly tasty veg balti. Limited specials are also available. Pub is a traditional drinkers pub with very friendly staff who will have a chat and make sure everything is ok. Takeaway service is also available. Will definitely be returning for food & drinks. The burger can be highly recommended, all homemade!

We stayed in a holiday cottage in the quiet village of Dalton for a week in July and ate here every day apart from Monday when it doesn't serve food. The landlord is very friendly and welcoming and reserved our favourite table even placing candles there for the last few nights which was a great accompaniement for the Elvis music. The food was typical traditional pub food at very reasonable prices. The Sunday lunch was huge and really delicious (particularly the gravy) all for around £6.We would really recommend this place and it even has guest accommodation on site.

WE visited with my son, his wife and her parents/grand parents for a fathers day Sunday lunch. God choice of roast meats which cam with Yorkshire Puddings Road and creamed potatoes and separately a bowl of various vegetables which was very generous. Prior to our lunch we spent an very pleasant hour in the bar talking to the regulars who were very friendly. Post our meal we retired to the large garden where the ladies were served coffee. It was a very pleasant day at a price that did not break the bank!

We were staying close by for a few days so decided to try here on our way home from Whitby. The pub is dog friendly which is always a bonus. The welcome from the owner was fantastic and he couldn’t do enough for us and our 2 dogs. The menu is excellent with something for everyone, with a good selection of veggie options. I had the koftas and my wife had the lamb casserole both of which were excellent. Highly recommended

We stopped here with our two young kids (1.5 years and 3 years) and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. They brought out a plate of fruit and veg fingers food for my youngest which was so kind. The food was delicious - I had haddock chowder and my partner had rack of lamb special. The decor was quirky and tasteful, and there was local produce on sale like chutney, jams, honey, brownies, blueberry tarts. Would definitely come again, thank you!

Superb meal in this charming restaurant. The proprietors are very experienced in their field and the whole dining experience is how it should be. One of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time. Will definitely return next time I’m in the area. The scallops were the best I’ve ever had.

Went for a Sunday lunch and ended up having 3 courses. (I skipped breakfast). I like arancini and so went for them - must say best I've eaten! Had beef for Sunday lunch, which came with loads of veg. The cauli cheese wasn't as I would make at home, but it knockes the block off those you find at carveries up and down the country. Baked and cooked to perfection. The pureed carrot was lovely, as was the parsnip and mash. Beef was good, but mine had a run of inedible connective tissue on the edge. Gravey is divine, and I finished with a lovely sticky toffee pudding on a lake of toffee sauce - my fav. And again, lovely. A special shout out to the camp male server who was fan-tas-tic darling! Very confident , helpfull and hard-working individual - an asset to the establishment. These were the great points, and for me and my guests, I'd like to feed back some constructive improvements. The main, on the whole, was great, but for me, I thought the roasted potatoes were a bit bland and dry. There is a massive yorkshire pudding served, which, again, was a bit dry/stale and bland. That was the only real negatives with the food, although the wife said she wasn't overly keen of the beatroot dish. Here is a couple of suggestions from the females in our group - could do with a hook on the back of the toilet door to hang handbags on and, to improve the atmosphere, maybe a few flowers on the tables? Will we visit again? Certainly, when next time in the area.
