This place was a wonderful find. I stayed here 1 night whilst cycling the Devon Coast to Coast route. It's a small operation with a relaxed, family-run feel, and conveniently located right by the cycle path. The grass pitch is really pretty, all the usual amenities provided, and the owners are really helpful and friendly. Outside of cafe hours they offer dinner and an excellent cooked breakfast to guests, which is very much appreciated! Absolutely loved it here, recommend it to everyone

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Advertised as dog friendly, however the owners really did not seem ok with accepting dogs into their property. Only when we arrived I was informed that 1 small dog is allowed & that usually the option is given to cancel. Why this is not included in the listing instead of going to the effort of booking I have no idea as we clearly didn’t know this from the booking info & it was mentioned guests with 2 other dogs had stayed recently who’s owners presumably didn’t know until they arrived either. The only lounge area is on the landing, but dogs are only allowed in the kitchen or entrance area, both of which are hard floors, which is a real shame as it seems like a missed opportunity to not allow dogs to sit with their family. We were not expecting to let them on any soft furnishings but were made to feel quite uncomfortable & found it hard to relax after the owner asked to ‘have a word’ about the dogs. The garden is the perfect enclosed area, but we were reminded that the rules are dogs have to be on leads at all times, something else we didn’t know until arriving. The owner seemed more concerned about using the garden as an extension of their own garden to grow veg, which made it difficult for us to feel as though we had the space to ourselves as you’d expect when paying to book an entire bunkhouse & we felt overlooked. If considering booking this property with your dog(s) I would suggest thinking twice as a comment was made to us about how previous dog owners left the place so I really feel the property should not be advertised as dog friendly at all, or better still, reconsider the restrictions in place as every other dog friendly break we have booked has been much more accommodating & the dogs seemed really happy before we were told they have to be on leads and had to be separate from us. My Wife left a day early with the dogs as she chose to sleep on the floor with them the night before as they are nervous rescue dogs, rather than leave them isolated for another night. Please at least contact the owners before considering booking if you are planning on taking your dog with you and I hope you have a better experience than we did!

My son and I stopped here overnight cycling the Tarka Trail. The accommodation was clean, warm and well stocked with everything we could have needed. Fast WiFi, good book and board game selection and outdoor seating in lovely garden. The best thing though was the kindness and generosity of the hosts. We arrived later than planned when the cafe had closed, exhausted and with no food. The nearest shops/pubs were a 4mile bike ride away. We had homemade pizzas delivered to us half an hour later. Was really thoughtful and made us feel very welcome. A fry up in the cafe the next morning was delicious and served with fresh orange juice and great fresh coffee. We will definitely be back with the whole family.

We visited Yarde for the second time today - a family of 5 with 4 dogs (3 noisy chihuahuas & a noisy Bichon Frise) - the staff were lovely with the dogs, all of which are rescues & very nervous. The food is fresh & really tasty - the apple cake is gorgeous. We are all autistic & the cafe catered for all our needs, including allowing the children to eat food we’d brought with us - the children will not eat anything from cafes except fresh baguettes-& the Yarde provided these perfectly baked. There is water for dogs, free parking, good quality outdoor tables well spaced & apple trees all around. Yarde is a great place to relax after a walk or a cycle on the Tarka Trail! 5 huge stars to Vincent & his staff from us.

I stayed here twice whilst cycling the Devon Coast to Coast. There is a small hostel building, a cafe and a camping field. My hosts were perfect, they are licensed so able to have a drink in the evening. If you are camping or staying you can order a grand breakfast in the morning outside cafe hours and the same applies to an evening meal. Please stay here if you can, it's quite a find. To prove this wasn't written by the owners, my only improvement would be to reseed the camping field as trying to find an area without tussock grass isn't the easiest but I managed on both nights

This was the second time we have visited the cafe since the new owners, last time we waited over an hour for our snacks to arrive, very annoyed as the menu is very simple. This time we went giving them the benefit of the doubt, having cycled a long distance. They informed us they had no change when we offered a note, after checking all my pockets, I found I was thirty pence short of the price. They offered no solution. So we left disappointed yet again. I live opposite and my Uncle (who was recently involved in a motorbike accident) was coming to visit, and I was delighted to know that these new owners, Michelle and Vince, would generously rent me their one bed room for £400 for one month (I provided all the cleaning and bedding) so he could come to stay and recover with us. He ended up having to cancel last minute due to his illness, so the room was left empty for 2 weeks. By this time we could not return the key or be eligible for a refund, as the return policy stated in Michelle's email to me and on the website is limited to only 14 days. Therefore, my cousin came to use to room for 3 days ahead of my uncles visit (Michelle was informed of this). The day comes my cousin arrives after not seeing her for 15 years, I walk her up to the gate to where her room was, I see Michelle charging out and shouting across to me from the cafe “Who the f**k are you!?”. Bearing in mind my mother and I had been down and seen Michelle and her husband the previous day when we went to do the housekeeping(I was even wearing the same clothes). I responded calmly who I was and who I was with whilst my cousin was in absolute shock, (as was I) Michelle disappears, Vince comes out and begins to say that he had no knowledge of this and wasn’t arranged, and that I needed to to go and get my mother. Cutting to the point, their excuse for the disgusting, embarrassingly unprofessional way my cousin and I were greeted was that someone had ‘fly tipped’ what turned out to be a carrier bag of paint cans placed inside the industrial waste bins at the entrance to the public car park opposite the b&b and Tarka Trail. The fact that Vince thought this was a justifiable reason for the behaviour of Michelle is beyond me. This clearly shows that unfortunately they do not have any experience in customer service or hospitality. Michelle decided later that instead of apologising verbally she would send an email stating that she had obviously not been introduced” and “is he/she actually using the room?”. Then subsequently blocked me.There was; no offer of breakfast, no tea or coffee,no toiletries, no tv, no towels, a wasp problem and no apology from Michelle or Vince either. To conclude, I would give Michelle and Vince and their rotten service, a wide berth and keep cycling on to the Puffing Billy down the road.

Why would such a popular stop for cyclists and walkers decide to shut for ten days in the summer? It's beyond me that a business cannot find staff to cover this period, or even rotate staff holidays. Although, to be fair to the business, I don't know the reasons behind the closure.and they did put some very clear signs up on the trail to warn of their closure. But if this was my business I would keep it open, rather than leave lots of willing customers feeling disgruntled (as I witnessed today!) Such a shame to see it closed.

My friends and I were on a walking holiday Coast to Coast (Ilfracombe to Plymouth) when we got to the Yarde orchard at about 0920hrs It was raining and the cafe shut. This was fair enough as the opening hours were 1000hrs. We decided to wait on the benches in the cafe under the shade, study the guide and plan the day out of the rain over a late breakfast. As I opened the gate a pick up truck rolled into the park and the owner got out and told us to leave and sit in the open and read our maps. In fairness one of our group of three did say " Oh no one of them" which did not help. However,we were told in no uncertain terms to clear of and use the open picnic area in the rain until he opened up, even though we wanted a bit of cover to look at our maps. I accept he was closed but having been in the catering and holiday trade three cups of coffee would have solved the issue, and a sale is a sale . On entering we were surprised to see an interior boosting a sort of new age vibe with bright colours and decoration, it had a very nice relaxing feel to it and were made to feel at home straight away . The choice of food and drink was very good especially the cider varieties on sale. I ordered the Muffins with fried egg and chorizo which sounded lush but was under whelmed with what looked a bit too like a Mcdonalds breakfast when it arrived , maybe I had set my expectations a little too high I though. So I continued to eat my way through it and took a drink of the Elderflower Still Cordial I had ordered . Now it might say Elderflower cordial which I have had many times before but this was more water with a slight taste of elderflower but really was very poor indeed . I can only surmise that the owners could not have tried this themselves as there really isn't any excuse for selling it.So in all I left feeling abit deflated as the interior promised so much , hence only the 3 stars .

As in the area again decided to try another of the stops on the Tarka Trail, this time East Yarde. It is an intersting and quirky location and very pleasant. It had a limited menu compaired to others, however once ordered our food was produced promptly and was of good quality. There were only two people when we arrived having coffee, and four more for coffee as we ate, very quite for a July lunchtime on a nice day. However it meant we had prompt service.Overall a nice spot and we will return again.

Planned lunch stop at East Yarde. Reliably good consistent food & service. Great day so sat outside. Only 30 minutes or so on from Puffing Billy at Torrington and worth going the extra 6 miles or so. Good food and coffee, great range of ciders and ales too.

We recently was walking the Tarka Trail and thought 4 miles to this stop wouldn't take us long being good walkers. Wrong it seemed to take ages. We think the distances given are wrong. Finally we arrive and found a table under cover as the weather has been changeable. Ordered Americano's coffee it was hot and tasty. Staff polite. Once rested made our return walk.

A fantastic quirky stop off along the Tarka Trail. Stopped in as a much needed rest point while cycling the trail and delivered just what was needed. Serves excellent quality food and drink, served in a relaxed and beautiful environment. Local alcoholic drinks and absolutely amazing quality food, a with many options from the surprisingly varied menu. Felt welcome straight away and could not recommend more.

Thoroughly enjoyed our late lunch here whilst cycling on the Tarka trail. Well worth the 2 mile steady incline from watergate. In desperate need for sustenance by the time we got there. Not disappointed at all. Quick service. Wholesome food. Friendly staff. I would definitely go back again if I have the chance. Nice to see an Eco-friendly place and I digged the background music.

Saw the adverts from 6 miles out on the Tarka Trail heading south with my daughter on a cycle tag along. The last 4 miles are gently up but it was well worth the work. I'm going to run a place like this when I retire. Superb. And an earth oven too.

Have visited a few times now as live locally. This is a different take on food and drink cafe style. Have always found it welcoming and friendly. Home made pizzas are superb, good selection of drinks (some interesting alcoholic choices.) Worth walking the section of the Tarka trail just to visit for lunch or a drink.

Saw this cafe at the start of our walk and really looked forward to a pleasant lunch at the end. Both of us are gluten sensitive so asked what the options were - only the rolls and a couple of cakes. Decided on a bacon roll and a pot of tea for two. The tea was generous and we managed quite a few cups out of the pot. This was just as well because the rolls were so dry we struggled to swallow them. We are used to gluten free bread being on the dry side but as there was no butter in the rolls and we weren't offered any sauces it wasn't as good as we hoped for. Didn't feel comfortable seeking out the staff to ask for butter and sauce as the were in deep conversation-so deep they didn't even thank us for our custom as we left. A small comment hurt "I should have asked about you being coeliacs because the tortillas are not gluten free but you are just selective" inferred we chose the gluten free option as a fashion statement rather than a health need

We took our 2 year old out to Yarde orchard on a Sunday lunchtime. We drove out and parked in the spacious car park. The place was buzzing with cyclists arriving at all times. Was great to chat to the friendly enthusiastic owners who couldn't be nicer. Was really impressed at how nice and manicured the cafe and grounds were. Ordered a selection of food including the tarka dhal, nachos with chorizo and mozzarella wrap. All homemade with a stunning array of flavours. All the staff were friendly and very helpful even entertaining our daughter with some toys. Highly recommended and will be back very soon.

We visited Yarde Orchard on a Sunday morning after a blustery family walk along the Tarka Trail. We found the staff welcoming and friendly, a great selection of local ales and a superb freshly cooked menu - locally sourced where possible. The food was better than expected and not the bland basic menu sadly sold in many establishments in North Devon, service was prompt and you could see the food being prepared freshly in front of you. Definitely worth the walk, we will be making our visits to Yarde Orchard a regular occurrence in the future - looking forward to sampling pizza from your outdoor pizza oven on the summer evenings.

Its not really a bar but I treat it like my local when I want an evening drink. They have wine, beer, cider ( Sam's is yummy) and a really chilled atmosphere. Somwhere a bit different. Situated on the Tarka Trail you can drive, walk or cycle here. We have done all three. The vibe is chilled and they make lovely food, Great pizza, and homemade cakes. Last Friday in the month they have a bit of live music with guitars and violins. a bit like a caelie. its open in the day and serves food on Friday and Saturday nights. The down side is its closed from end of September until spring... boo hoo

My partner and I visited this establishment last Sunday and were so impressed by the standard of hygiene and quality of food. Its a family run small business and that so apparent in every way. The friendly attitude combined with top quality service freshly cooked food truly an honest description of home cooking. We shall miss this stopping place on the Tarka Trail when it closes on Sunday 27th September for the Winter months. On a light hearted note the owner is called Simeon. He is one cool guy with an equally cool name. Highly recommended to all and well worth a visit.

TripAdvisor shows this place in East Street, Torrington which it certainly isn't. It must be a good four miles away and difficult to find - unless you are on the Tarka Trail - and that is the point - it is a cafe right on the cycling/walking trail which also does accommodation in yurts - a perfect stop-over for those doing the longer distances. It's appeal is quite 'alternative' but it has sound eco-credentials and the food is very good. Nice to sit on the deck and watch others toil away on the trail, only down-side - and this isn't their fault - is that if you choose one of the delicious cakes you will be plagued by wasps. Normally a sign of the English summer but there hasn't been much of that this year and the wasps are still horrendous.

Yarde Orchard is a beautiful site in a beautiful location. The first thing you notice is the Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in wind and an earth built pizza/bread oven in front of their cafe. If you're interested in eco/green issues, this place should be considered. A small niggle about the site itself was that the grass around the yurts and camping area was very long and had not been cut for a while, meaning your footwear soon gets very wet - even when not raining. The yurt we stayed in had a wood burner that made it lovely and warm. The yurts come with mattresses, which I likened to sleeping on a cream cracker - not the thickest or most comfortable. The food in the cafe was first class, we had a terrific pizza one night and lovely Himalayan style curry the next night - in aid of the Nepal earthquake appeal which was a nice touch. I was a little disappointed that the staff don't really reflect the surroundings, I found them to be a little stand offish and not very approachable, I would have loved to have chewed the fat with them about their project and their green credentials but felt that I would just be an inconvenience and so didn't bother. That said, I would stay again and happily recommend it to anyone thinking of doing so.

We had nice food. The place is very different from a chain franchise and we applaud the efforts the owners have gone to. The décor is rough and ready and I guess recycled as befits the ethos of the business. If the staff could be more welcoming, this would make the whole experience much better. We weren't made to feel as though we, as customers, were that important. It wasn't that clear if the boards were all that was available or that we needed to book at the counter. A warmer welcome would have overcome this. However, we will be back soon as we enjoyed it overall.

We've just had a fabulous weekend, based around the Yarde Orchard. Service, food and accommodation (in the bell tent with a wooden floor - a kind of micro-Yurt!) were all excellent and very good value. You sense a great atmosphere the moment you walk in and the whole place reflects the owners' vision and sustainable outlook without being in anyway 'preachy' about the environment. We can thoroughly recommend a stay or a just a break along the Tarka Trail

Part of an 18 strong cycling party we stayed here overnight following a ride along the Tarka Trail. This gem of a café and accommodation is a great place to stop off whether just for light refreshments or for an overnight stay. The staff were welcoming, the service was excellent, and everyone worked so hard (behind the scenes) to make our stay a really enjoyable one. The food, organic and locally sourced, was delicious. An added bonus was a couple of DJ’s playing music for the evening, which added to the atmosphere. The yurts were clean, comfortable and great fun to stay in; although I think that had a lot to do with the company too :) It was a peaceful and tranquil place to be (until we arrived!), and they really are striving to be eco-friendly and sustainable. They are an inspiration to go back to nature and lead a more simplistic, less materialistic way of life.

Food was bland and tasteless, staff were rude and arrogant not only to our group but to other guests also. When asked if they had any entertainment booked for the evening they said no as they had a hen party, then we were told to tone it down. We went to the restaurant as a group having a lovely evening, but after ordering our food we were told to "tone it down" in a very disrespectful manner. The atmosphere changed and the whole evening was ruined and if we hadn't paid for the food I would have left there and then. When the food arrived it was absolutely tasteless even after adding salt, very disappointed. We had planned to stay in the restaurant for the whole evening and enjoy drinks and indulge in a sweet, however due to the poor attitude of the staff we returned to the camp site. I was glad to leave and decided to drive elsewhere for breakfast and will never visit again.
