Otters in Torridge

Though we live quite locally this was our first visit. A warm welcome and very friendly staff, we had bacon sandwich, breakfast wrap and coffees, all tasted lovely and fresh and drinks nice and hot. Very reasonably priced, will visit again

Nice location on the quay at bottom of high street. Food is good,coffee very nice. Who wants to go in a chain when you have a local cafe like this to visit

Called in today to have something to eat at approximately 1oclock, only to be informed that they were too busy to serve food, no it may be a long wait just too busy.

My second visit here stopped for a quick bite I had a tuna and cucumber sandwich which was very nice. Sat outside people watching for a hour

Sat outside for coffee and milk shakes and spent a nice chilled hour. Atmosphere was excellent, and the staff warm and friendly.

Visited this cafe plenty of times in the last 6 months, and the food and drinks have always been great.

Consistently great coffee, great service and great value! Lovely to be able to sit outside Otters and feel smug looking towards the local Costa across the road knowing we're drinking a much better coffee and at the same time supporting a local business and not a faceless corporation!

Nice coffee and sandwich friendly staff on a dull day

Popped in on a whim whilst visiting Bideford for the first time. Quaint venue, overlooking the river, with plenty of seating both inside and out. The staff were friendly, and service from ordering to the table was relatively fast. We opted for a few slices of the cakes on offer, which were flavourful. We highly recommend the Caranchan Cake, the Orange & Poppyseed Cake was also very nice.

The best jacket potato I have ever eaten In any cafe. Very cheap at £6.95 as it includes coleslaw, salad, Tuna and sweetcorn. A huge portion as well as a huge potato, which was very fluffy. Salad delicious too. Can't wait to return.

Loved the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff

A great find! We discovered this last year as we were looking for a dog friendly cafe. It is a little gem, right on the waterfront, it seems to be mainly locals calling in. When we were in the area again we made straight for Otters, and had a brilliant, home cooked, very reasonably priced brunch. The staff are all lovely - friendly, welcoming and made a fuss of the dog too! Highly recommended!

Had had a hospital Appt & walked down 2 the Quay. Our usual cafe was closed so we tried Otters. Had been here a few years ago when I’d first moved 2 the area but hadn’t liked it at the time. I think maybe there was a change of management because we were pleasantly surprised. Our coffees arrived in no time & were very nice; Latte quite milky & Chai just right. The atmosphere was lovely-lots of people greeting one another during the course of our stay, doggies welcome, staff very nice & chatty. Will try something 2 eat next time.

I was with a few friends on a day trip when we came across this cafe When we walked in we met by a very miserable look young girl she wasn't welcoming at all and had I been on my own I would of walked out at that very moment She took our order and was not engaging at all We did try to lighten the mood but she was not wanting to even try to look like she wanted to bother talking I appreciate we all have off days but in hospitality you do have to make the effort try to put a smile on your face and be civil and unfortunately the cake matched the atmosphere it was bland and uninspiring the only saving grace for this cafe is that the young lad that came to clear the table was very pleasant but we won't be returning

Haven't been in here for a while so we thought we would go in for coffee and lunch. Service was good and paying itself was good but the nachos on the side were very bland and too much greenery. Probably personal taste.9

Food was great and one lady was really nice but some staff came across as rude and grumpy very grunting instead of talking and really some you could tell just didn’t want to be there.

This is a great quayside cafe.. We had a delicious Sunday breakfast. It's unfortunate that it's served by listless pretty, possibly hung over children.. And slowly.. Never mind, it's worth the frustration. (they need somebody to drive the front of house!)

Food Stop between activities. Chose Otters at Random on our first day exploring. Was not disappointed. Family chose variety of meals and no complaints. Good value, well cooked, nicely presented, good friendly service. So much so we returned and again found no fault. Would highly recommend if you were in the area

For a traditional coffee shop, close to the river, you need look no further than this place. We stopped in Bideford for a coffee and were pleased we chose here. The coffee was good as we're the cakes! I'd recommend it!

Great little cafe. Electricity went off, could tell it was a stressful situation for them however these things happen. We only received part of an order but they gave a full refund for the meal despite us offering to pay for what we received. Food was great and good value for the size.

Brilliant place good food quality

Steak burger ?!? The worst thing I’ve ever eaten and that’s saying something - brown solid microwaved then grilled low quality rubbish.

I only ate cake and it was perfect, unlike the atmosphere, the staff came across as rude, unwelcoming and hostile, there were no smiles, no warmth, no general helpful attitude, this from the older staff. The younger staff were doing the best they can working in an environment with such a bad atmosphere. If that was my child, I'd encourage them to get a job elsewhere, because the older ladies attitude wasn't much better to the young member of staff. I love cake and honestly the cake was divine, but not divine enough to make me want to go back....unless maybe they do a takeaway service......the full English breakfast smelt good though. It's a busy small Cafe, and I'd heard good things about it which is why I went, actually I'd just heard the cake was the best, maybe they were just having a bad day.

Sat outside for a tea. We didn't have anything to eat there, though the food being served looked really good.

Been here twice now, first time we waited over an hour for breakfast but had the toast to go with it within two! We thought we would give them the benefit if doubt and try again today. We were there just before ten so couldn't even look at the menu till then, last behind counter was very abrupt! order came pretty quick this time, we had breakfast wraps which looked really nice when they came out but one bite in and had very chewy sausage and fatty bacon. The wrap was also extremely greasy! By the time I had eaten it itwas dripping. It's a lovely spot for cafe and shame as we would use it more often.

Lovely location for a cafe and nice outside seating. Food was average and service was slow. Drinks were served spilled over the edges and some were missed from the order.

Visited with friends and our young children. The staff helped with opening the door to get the pram in easier, and they were accommodating and let us order parts of a full English rather than the whole thing, as well as a babycino which wasn’t on the menu but my daughter asked for. The food was tasty and arrived quickly and the staff were friendly. Only downside is there wasn’t a baby change unit in the toilets, but they did have high chairs.

Had lunch in Otters. It sits on the lovely river front, opposite the only statue of an otter I've ever seen, near the bridge across to East-the-Water. (Inscription on the statue said something like: "Tarka the Otter swam under the long bridge built by the monks over their ford". So I sat in the window of Otters, musing on the layered history of this spot. Otters proved to be my kind of cafe--what I call a "people's cafe"--ie., one that serves regular food at a good price and does it well. Had a panini, which can be a hit-and-miss order. But it was excellent. Well toasted (not just warmed), and with generous amounts of strong (not tasteless) cheese. Came with a big pile of salad and Doritos (?). Also had a proper cuppa. Staff were friendly and efficient. Plenty of them too, for a small cafe in November, all dressed in black kit with "Otters" on the back.

Had a few hours in Bideford as we was all on holiday and come across this place as it was a bit wet and chilly out whent inside but as they was 5 of us could not see a table free only a reserved one. The lady saw us and said we could have the table very nice of her. So we ordered 4 paninis chips tea and coffee and hot chocolate all very nice and a good price.

Steak pasty dry and tasteless, soup the same. Margarine not butter for the roll yuck.serving food sitting down inside with no toilet facilities, waiting for a plumber apparently. Should have been told this before taking our order, takeaway only if this happens

We stopped off at this cafe for drinks after a walk on the Tarka trail. It is in a lovely spot by the river. I could not quite believe how rude and condescending the older lady working behind the counter was. Firstly she did a good job of ignoring me for a while and then when she deigned to serve me her whole attitude was offhand and unpleasant. Whilst ignoring me she took time to criticise the nice young man working with her who appeared terrified of her. If she is the owner she is clearly in the wrong business and, if an employee, maybe she would benefit from some customer care training or even someone reminding her that good manners cost nothing.

Lovely fresh food with very generous portions. Good selection of food and drink options. Would definitely recommend here and if we are ever in the area again would most certainly be back.

Great coffee, friendly staff and daughter loved her cheesy chips. Not many tables and the toilet is like a cupboard, but it’s friendly, clean and staff are polite. Service doesn’t take too long, so you won’t be disappointed

Lovely. They have a really nice menu with plenty of options. The food is fresh and tasty. You can sit in or takeaway. The cappuccino I had with hazelnut syrup was excellent. I ordered a cheese, cranberry and chicken toasty which comes with salad and crisps. The takeaway box and knife and fork are eco friendly and recyclable. Friendly and helpful staff

Thank you to the lovely staff that accommodated us when it chucked it down with rain, and helped us carry all our food in & allowed us to bring our dogs inside too. All staff very friendly and the food was delicious.

Visited earlier this month. Outside Tables or chairs not wiped down after use,turned up to a dirty table. Not following covid guidelines. What else aren't they doing.

Food quality has gone downhill went for breakfast the other day and the bacon was extremely fatty and cold to the extent that the fat had solidified on the bavon🥓. Was told to take a seat anywhere but no waitress came to us went ro the counter and was told you have to order and pay at the counter. Poor communication.

Another wonderful visit to Otters. Food always freshly prepared and looks and tastes amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

First time we have visited Otter's, and had a lovely time. I have a Guide Dog and they were really good about Briar being in the café. The staff were all very friendly, and the customer service was very good. The food was freshly made...

Got there half hour before closing and they made it obvious they didn't want to serve us as said we had to drink outside. Which turned out fine as this made it easier to tip coffee away as has got to have been the worst coffee I've had. It was quite obvious it was filter coffee although I asked and paid for americano. If they can't deal with customers turning up half hour before closing. They should close earlier.

Ordered our food which cost a packet and had to wait ages only to be told that the fish fingers for my sandwich had gone mushy!! And they had run out ! Definitely would not go back. Definitely a job for Gordon Ramsey.
