I came to Wysteria Avenue two days in a row, for the festive afternoon tea and then for a baby shower. Living nearby, why have I not been here before??? The food is of such a high standard its a credit to the chef, the atmosphere is warm and friendly and you cannot beat the prices, it’s such good value for money and the staff are excellent! Its also decorated nice and has a child’s play pen out the back with dressy ups - such a good idea to keep any kids entertained. Highlights have to be the beef and Yorkshire puddings, the curry and the brownies however everything I sampled I could have eaten twice over! I will definitely be returning!

We went here on Sunday 14th April for my daughter's 40th birthday, and we had a great time. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and they had decorated the table with balloons and table confetti, which was a nice touch. There were 7 adults and 3 children in the party, and we had a mix of Sunday roasts, hot afternoon tea and cold afternoon tea and kids meals, and were very impressed with the quality and quantity of the food, I had so much turkey with my roast, and they brought out more gravy in case we needed it. The kids loved the play area, it kept them quiet while we waited for our food. The customer service is excellent here, we waited quite a long time for our food so the waitress told us that the drinks we had ordered were on the house, and the chef came out herself to apologize and explain that they had a problem with one of the fryers, which had caused the delay, not many places would do that! Everyone's food looked really nice, there were a couple of cases of 'food envy', so we may need to visit again to try different choices :)

My boyfriend and I brought my Nana here for lunch yesterday and it was lovely. The customer service was excellent from booking a table onwards. I asked about accessibility as my Nana has trouble walking, they mentioned that they could open the accessible door if she used a wheelchair and gave us the option of sitting in the section nearest the kids play area or the quieter part. Lunch portions were generous and I heard that both the lasagne and chilli were lovely. My jacket potato with salad was nice and the homemade coleslaw was lovely. Service was quick and the lady serving was pleasant; presentation nice and the food was very reasonably priced. We will be back for afternoon tea!

Visited here for afternoon tea with my daughter and her friends. It was her birthday and baby shower so a double celebration. Had a wonderful time. The organiser had pre ordered afternoon tea for us and the menu choices were varied and included something for everyone. Savoury items included sandwiches with a choice of fillings, chicken and pepper mini skewers, corned beef pie, mini spring rolls, mini beef filled Yorkshire puds, salad and chips. ‘Afters’ were scones, mini chocolate brownies and meringues. I have gluten intolerance and was presented with my own gluten free afternoon tea cake stand! Gluten free bread sandwiches with a choice of fillings and gluten free scone and cakes. We had plenty of tea and filter coffee which included several refills! The service was first class and nothing was too much trouble. Pleasant, tastefully decorates spacious surroundings and lovely atmosphere. ( a converted pub). Even a small play area for children. Will certainly be returning for coffee and cake! ( or even Sunday dinner, which looked delicious too!) Great to have such a gem on my doorstep.

Fantastic Mother’s Day lunch at Wysteria Avenue. First time eating in and the homely decor and trinkets gave the place charm and character. We’d booked for the carvery but 2 people in the party fancied the Yorkshire pudding wrap which they made no problem. The beef in the wraps was slow cooked and in the tastiest gravy ever! The chips were ‘proper chips’ home made and flavoursome. There was a choice of 4 meats on the carvery, I opted for beef and turkey (sorry no photos). You could help yourself to fresh vegetables including roast and mashed potatoes, roast parsnips, broccoli, carrots, peas, ‘steeply peas’ and stuffing. The food was excellent quality and was cooked to perfection.Mams got a free prosecco or dessert. We opted for the salted caramel cheesecake and my son got strawberry waffles which were delicious. My daughter is 3 and loves cold custard, again not on the menu, but not a problem. I’ve never been to such a friendly and accommodating eatery, nothing was too much trouble. There is also a cocktail menu for just £3.50 each!!! So my sister had a mojito which she said was really good (just a pity I was driving!). The kids place area was nice and clean with a good selection of toys and some fantastic dress up clothes too. All seven in the party had a lovely afternoon and loved the food and ambience. We will definitely be back.

We went here for my mum's birthday. We had the summer sizzler afternoon tea, choice of 3 hot or cold savoury food, chips and salad, cheese or fruit scone and 2 mini desserts and a huge pot of earl grey tea! Absolute bargain and everything was homemade and delicious. Children's meals were also really tasty and good value. They have a small play area for toddlers, which although mine are much to old for now, there is a time I would have been very grateful! Staff were all lovely and nothing was too much trouble. Curry, cheese slice, corn beef slice, Yorkshire pudding with beef. Beef sarnie, cup of soup and then there's the sweet stuff after that. Had my dinner here today and thought I should probably write a google review at some point given how often I've visited over the years. The pressed lamb burger with sweet potato and red cabbage salad was just what I needed. This place is a hidden gem and more people in Sunderland and beyond should know about it. On a high street full of fast food and junk food outlets it stands alone as a fresh, healthy and good quality choice. Zoe is a friendly face and takes the time to get to know her regulars which I think is an added touch. Ask for an 'Anything Sandwich'...
