This bar and restaurant could have been excellent, but it let us down in several ways. The staff were friendly and the restaurant welcoming. The first problem was that we ordered some olives whilst we waited. They never came. We ordered 3 fish and chips for a table of 3, but only 2 arrived. They somehow forgot the third one and one of us had to sit and watch the others eat while waiting another 15 minutes for theirs to be cooked. They took the price of a small bottle of mineral water off the bill as compensation ( big deal !). The other bugbear was that the food was served on cold plates which meant that the food went cold very quickly. I would give it another chance to see if they could do better.

When we arrived we made it known we wanted to eat & were ushered into a loud corner with almost zero lighting and right under the speaker. Meat platter was pretty bad; chopped up sausage plus sausage roll and crappy chicken wings. Really average. Chips and chilli were fine. Barmaid sat down whilst she cleaned the window which was odd. This place seems best suited to low budget.

We visited the restaurant before a show at the Barbican. Two people in the group have allergies but the item on the menu that could have been eaten by them safety was out of stock. The waitress spoke to the manager and he went out of his way to go out and pick up two steaks for these two diners. This was fantastic service and as one of the diners with allergies, this made my evening. The food was great all round, service quick and friendly and the bar had a nice atmosphere. Thanks to the owner for going above and beyond, it was very much appreciated and we will be visiting here again.

I've been coming to the Wood Street Bar since before it was the Wood Street Bar. In 20 years I've always thought the beer was good, the food was well portioned and tasty and the bar was in all other respects above average. There's a few really quiet places to have an intimate chat but there's also larger areas and booths for bigger groups. I came here for the first time in a while last week and it's still a good place to eat and drink and socialise. Why is it then that it's never full? I've started to think that maybe it's cursed? Every other bar in the city is at capacity every lunch time and evening but the Wood Street Bar never manages more than a few groups? I guess that there are some things I'll never understand. The Wood Street Bar is quiet, comfortable, well provisioned and the staff are polite and helpful if rather unengaged due to lack of customers.

This is the closest pub to Barbican and so very convenient if you don't want to drink in the complex itself. Also very close to St Giles church for concerts there. It's a fairly standard pub. Not huge amounts of room inside and little outside (presumably because of the area). Beers are fine and service was prompt.

We booked Christmas dinner for our company . The bar area is nice and welcoming and the staff were pleasant enough. The whole experience was let down by the food. I had French onion soup to start nothing wrong there, then it came to the main course, mine was Venison Wellington, problem here was the venison was over cooked and so tough as old boots. Time for dessert, oh dear , Spotted Dick, this was served to everyone who ordered it uncooked, but a few of us didn't realise and took a mouth full, I am still trying to forget the taste, at least the obvious Birds custard was well Birds custard.

Went here for a business lunch and the service was good but I thought the menu was completely overpriced. £25 for a small hot pot that arrived very quickly, so was probably just shoved in the microwave and most of my meat was inedible - gristly and chewy. For £25 for a small dish I would expect good quality meat. Menu had a limited choice I thought. Wine was nice but £26 for a Shiraz. Not sure why the mains are so expensive when it is only a pub really with nice views of the Barbican gardens.

I chose this restaurant to my host a post-graduation ceremony dinner with my family, as it was so close to the Barbican and with a good looking menu with non-pretentious food for a good price. We found it difficult to find, simply due to poor signage in the area (not the restaurant's fault) and when we arrived the place was near empty, but we used the table reserved for us, as requested by the window looking onto the lake.Unfortunately, due to the hot weather on the day the lake smelt a bit bad, but we simply closed the window to avoid that. The staff were brief but friendly enough, and our chosen meals arrived promptly and tasted very good (there was a good selection too!)They also had a games room downstairs which had a pool table and a couple of electronic machines, plus a bar which was shut when we visited.

I asked 'sorry our mistake, as it's empty does that really matter or could you make an exception?' She went back to ask a cowardly manager who wouldn't come and speak to us and said 'sorry manager says no' we then asked 'but what if we go outside and call and book a table' she nodded clearly seeing where we were goin with this-went and asked the manager and he again said no' No explanation at all. The Brutalist architecture and freezing winds of the Barbican is an effective bar to the drift of City folk westward. Which produces an interesting side effect. For just under these Stalinist columns a rather nice pub and not bad restaurant nests, without the gaffawing investment bankers or the noisy attention seeking of the traders who frequent every pub to the south and east from 5 til 8. As the ultimate accolade for any pub I mark low the Bar Scene (by which i presume they mean loud music killing your conversation, heaving sweating torsos and vomit on the pavement - which sadly are all absent here)

I then went back for dinner and have now lost count of the number of times I've eaten here! I've brought a lot of friends to Wood Street and I always enjoy the food and the only time I haven't was when something wasn't to my taste, not because there was anything wrong with it at all.I'm vegetarian so the willingness of the staff to alter dishes and offer to make me an off-menu salad when there wasn't a starter I liked has been brilliant. I find it a relaxing venue, the wine is great, and I know friends I've taken there have then returned with other friends.I had a terrible meal somewhere else last night and it made me want to come on and give credit where credit's due to a lovely restaurant with great food!

Bear in mind you need to ask for a water view if you want one. My mackerel pate was excellent - not too fishy and great smooth texture. The sea bass was even better - nicely crunchy and soft and creamily cooked. The clients saffron and cauliflower soups were apparently great too. Situated at the Barbican end of Wood Street, one is unlikely to just walk past, but it has a super location with lovely views over the Barbican lakes. The owners really care about the quality of food and I found the combination of flavours very pleasing, about £20- for two courses is very god value. There is a sound wine list, but in addition there are two well kept real ales, which for me is a big bonus. There are also some tables outside which do not suffer from the fumes of passing traffic. The food was of an exceptionally high standard: don't let the fact that it is a bar as well put you off.Thoughtfully compiled menus, expertly prepared and promptly served. It's not a cheap option, but if you want food that aspires to Michelin stardom, it's a bargain. A bit off the beaten track but that's a good thing I think. Food was well cooked and presented although the menu was a bit lacking. Service was friendly and efficient and it was good value for money - 3 people, 2 courses each, 3 soft drinks and a bottle of Gavi all for under £100. Atmosphere was a bit lacking and certainly for a Friday lunch time. It's not quite a 'very good' overall rating to be fair but it was far better than just 'average'. Worth a visit but first check out the menu online as you might struggle a bit - we did.

I’ve never given a restaurant a bad review but after this less than enjoyable dining experience I felt compelled to. After waiting too long for a server we asked for water for the table and placed our order. The server wandered off and chose to clear tables without bringing the water. After some time it was obvious no water was coming so I flagged down another server who brought water (which was never refilled btw). The food was mediocre at best. When the bill arrived there was a “ compulsory service charge” added which if the service was adequate I would have been happy to pay. This charge is not compulsory and the patrons have to be advised prior that this will be added to the bill. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place!
