Update 2nd May. It's still ok here, but you don't come here for the service. The prawn with garlic and chili dish I had was very measly in quantity and presentation, and not worth £16. Knocking a star off for that, as that was disappointing. I went here for lunch with a friend with some feeling of trepidation, but I need not have worried, as the Chinese food was very good. I don't need fancy restaurants or fancy service (and I've dined in Michelin-starred establishments); happier these days with an unpretentious, relaxed canteen-style vibe; no frills, as long as the food is good and tasty. Prices perhaps a bit on the high side though, given the nature of the offering, but I'd go back. Nice to have the tea on the table on arrival too.

This restaurant not a lots of customers anymore. The waiter and waitress so so rude. If you ask something theme they will shout you. We are paying for the food of course we have right to ask like i need more tea. Instead to say sorry the waitress will shouting you. I prefer to buffer much better food rather than rude Wong k staff

‼ ️Cash only! Cash only! Cash only! ‼ ️ This store should completely ignore the reviews, right? ! But I hope that the next guests I see can refer to it before deciding whether to come. First of all, it is great that there is no service charge, and tea is also provided, which is really great! But the service doesn’t need to be so bad, right? The common problems of old restaurants in Chinatown are all here. There is no sense of service in the whole store. They are very impatient when helping customers order food. They have a bad attitude towards Asians. They even dig in and shake their feet when ordering. It is really eye-opening for me! What era has ended! In terms of food, the dry-fried beef river lacked the flavor of the wok, and the seasoning was just unsatisfactory. When I ate the beef, I thought it was pork liver, and the fishy smell was not removed... ❌Never come again!

Deserves way more than 3.6 stars. Best Chinese food I've ever had, and that's coming from someone who's had a lot of Chinese food in terms of dining-in and takeaway, I can confidently say Wong Kei is the best out of all of them, by a mile. The only bad reviews I see here are about the service. Yeah, they're rude, so what? It's what you come to expect, they have a reputation for it after all, and personally I don't even mind it. They just don't waste time with unnecessary pleasantries, they'll seat you, bring you tea, and ask for your order in a straightforward manner. It might take some getting used to, but it's all part of the experience. One bad point I must concede is that they only take cash, which can be annoying especially as I don't usually carry cash anymore, however, there's a cashpoint 2 minutes down the road from them which is easy to stop off and take out a tenner, you won't need much more as the prices are excellent! I would highly recommend the chicken chow mein, crispy BBQ pork belly on rice, and peking duck!

For every good thing we experienced, there was something bad. The location is great, but we're packed in like sardines. Prices are cheap, but they only take cash. There is no service charge but the service is bad (waiter was rude when dealing with him, slow to take our order and slow to fill our Chinese tea and slow to bring back our change). The Chinese Tea is free but is served in cheap and small metal teapots that get cold fast and the waiters are slow to refill. The beef brisket noodle soup and wan tan noodle soup were very good, but the special fried rice was bad and the Malaysian fried hor fun noodles was horrible and made totally wrong. Overall, I think 2 stars is the best I can give it based my experience eating there on a Tuesday lunchtime.

Other thing was noodles, far too salty, and they were the same kind you find in instant noodles. Unsure what people are doing rating this place so high. AVOID. Oh and, they’re scared to use ceramic plates in case they get damaged, so guess what? They use plastic ones instead!

Food is ok, cheap & cheerful but the service is absolutely appalling. Waiter shouted at me in front of my children & a packed restaurant. We order 4 meals, only 1 arrived and we waited 20 mins for the other 3, table behind us, arrived after us, ordered the same and got theirs 1st. Asked twice about our order and the 2nd time the waiter shouted at me that its busy, not his fault, it's downstairs, I "must wait 2 minutes, 2 more minutes. Such a bad experience. Food is ok, but on this occasion my son found a hair in his, they said "its very busy kitchen" but didn't remove or replace the dish. The service left a bad taste in my mouth.

First time coming here. Never again the waitress was so rude that I would of dragged her mouth. unfortunately, rudeness and poor service have been ongoing issues here after reading some of reviews. And I talk with my money I believe all customers should do the same for this restaurant you can not expect your customers to eat and deal with Incompetent staff as well as no people skills and have the Audacity to add-on service charge smh it's hard to enjoy your meal when asking for missing dishes you have to deal with attitude and rudeness the Manager is worse. Overall the food was nice accept for the pork it had a funny raw smell. The pawns and chicken was lovely. I would not recommend this place 😐 😕 😒

Won Kei never disappoints - you get a big plate of a balanced meal, speedily - and has been doing so for the decades I have been frequenting it. Unfortunately though, they seem to have withdrawn the complementary pot of Chinese tea with every meal so poor show them and, I guess, I actually 𝘢𝘮 disappointed in them about one thing😔. Back to the highs though: their signature dish, for me, though is beef crispy noodles, which is a total balanced meal in itself, of: tender soft beef in gravy, tossed with mixed crispy vegetables (including pak choi) all on top of a bed of crispy fried noodles; it satisfies my macro requirements. Another dish of note is their duck noodle soup...absolutely divine, with an overly generous amount of perfectly cooked duck therein

Absolutely heartbreaking 💔 to write this review. I have been loyal and always came to Wong Kei for 40 years and for the past 10 years I have started noticing the rudeness of the staff but nothing compared to the rudeness of one waitress with short dark blondish bobbed hair, roughly in her mid 50's-60 years old, on Thursday 20th June at about 10.30pm. We had just finished watching a show and were starving, so thought we would go on my birthday to my favourite Wong Kei. My husband and I got shown to our table opposite the toilets and as soon as we sat down, the waitress I mentioned wanted to know what we wanted, didn't even give us a chance to look at the menu. I said my husband is looking and the waitress replied "we're closing soon" in an annoyed tone, walked off then kept pacing around our table basically to say hurry up and order. My husband felt rushed, felt like he couldn't look at the menu and just said "I'll have what you're having" She took our order, then came back not even a minute later and said "you're not ordering anymore food" then walked off. The closing time for Wong Kei is 11.30pm so we had an hour before closing time. Noodles arrived very quick but was basically thrown at us. My favourite meal was salty and lacked any other flavour. The waitress was pacing up and down by our table again basically to hurry us up. After we finished which was 20mins later, we couldn't wait to leave, waitress cleared our table literally as soon as we put our chopsticks down. First time ever we have given no tip and we have never experienced such rudeness. With Chinatown filled with lots of restaurants, Wong Kei's staff need to learn to be alot more respectful to it's customers because after that, I'm never coming back here and I will give my money to a restaurant more deserving.

We weren’t hungry enough to order so much. We would have been fine with their rule but it was the attitude they had towards us from the moment we got in that really made us feel unhappy. When we were ready to order, we ordered one dish for two people and the server questioned us by saying “are you joking, 1 for 3 person?”. Then, they made comments to each other about us not ordering enough food in Mandarin and Cantonese that they thought we didn’t understand but we are multilingual people😭. Food, used to be not bad and reasonably priced, which was the ONLY possible reason for trying to justify walking into the place. For a while now though the food is as, or even more expensive then the neighbouring restaurants with the addition of smaller portions and lack of quality. Check your take aways before leaving the restaurant! When you buy takeaways you don’t open the box to inspect it, right? You assume that what you ordered is in the box. Not the case here! I ordered takeaway Fried Hofun with Beef (No. 129). When collecting I repeated my order and was given a box with confirmation. I didn’t even think to check it. When I got home and opened the box, it was fried hofun no meat. I am not complaining that the amount of meat was small, there were no signs of beef at all. The Chef just forgot to add beef. What a disappointment! Lesson learned- next time I will need to open the box before leaving the restaurant!

Tell me a restaurant where I can have a decent asian meal for less than 10 quid with free tea and without the bloody service charge in Central London😆 It's not ideal if they arrange someone else to share your table (they reserve the empty tables for bigger groups of customers). But with crazy inflated prices these days, Wong Kei is one of the few places I still patronise in Central London. About this dish 干炒牛河:pretty nice with enough wok hei and plenty of meat. I was satisfied! Edit: went back again to try their beef brisket on rice. Beef portions are huge, bigger than served in a noodle soup. Except for a few stringy pieces, the beef was tender and flavorful.

Have been dining at this restaurant for over twenty years, on and off, so well aware of the notorious 'rudeness' but never experienced it until today. Always thought it was put on as a bit if a show for those that deserved it, but we certainly did not! Went with my husband (we're in our 40s). We're a decent couple and took our youngest (13 years old) who is a good quiet boy. We were led to our table by a younger male waiting staff member who got sidetracked by two ladies heading up the stairs - I couldn't understand their conversation and probably irrelevant. We sat down and within minutes, an older female member of the waiting staff began shouting at us for sitting down and telling us we should have gone upstairs. She was so rude, with no thought to the embarrassment she was causing us as other customers were sniggering. One table were kind enough to offer us almost condolences. I personally walked out and left my husband and son to it. The very sad thing is that the food is always excellent. Our children love the place and it's a family go to restaurant and my husband and I were customers from our uni days. Today was bang out of order and the woman knows who she is and should be ashamed of her disgraceful behaviour and spoiling a family's afternoon outing.

On the other hand, the duck with plum sauce was delicious and the soft crab starter was great. The crispy pork and pork belly was also pretty good but could have had more flavour. It’s quite a mixed bag! The service is not bad at all, and I don’t see the problem with them. Anyway, I don’t think this is a place I’d recommend or revisit. There was a nice, authentic ambience inside but the food was not anything special. The chilli oil and soya sauce only help to a certain extent.

Food is very average for Chinatown, atmosphere sterile and they don't take cards or contactless which is very frustrating - even if it's in small print on the menu, isn't something you look out for in an established restaurant in London. Also, the ATM they suggest charges £4 per withdrawal despite there being a free HSBC much closer round the corner. Absolutely will not be going back when there are so many better options.

The older lady on the team is so rude. We left before eating - she was that bad. Avoid this place - it looks rubbish in comparison to the other restaurants in the area. Goldmine, right next door, was fantastic - ended up ordering 5 dishes from there !!!!

First time back since 2001 when I studied here despite multiple trips back to London. It’s a reliable place for casual late night supper on a cold night post show, but I wouldn’t recommend this place otherwise. There is much better cooking just next door at Gold Mine and many other eateries nearby. Everything we had was disappointing and bland or even tasteless, thankfully there’s lots of their house chilli sauce in a generous glass on the table. Only the aromatic duck was worth the trip. Loved that they offered it in quarter bird portions and I would come back just for this, again, only after a show for supper when other places are closed. That said, the menu is HUGE. So it’s a great place to bring big groups of friends who can’t come to a consensus on what to have. You’ll find something for everyone including vegetarians and those with allergies. But for pure nostalgia, quick hot grub and a spotlessly clean comfortable environment late at night, I feel it’s worth a visit and I’d choose it over many other options. It only gets a 3 star because we just expect better cooking from its reputation.

1 star for the aromatic duck, which was really good, and another star for clean environment and the surprisingly decent and friendly service we received (despite the many poor reviews on their service) Everything else we ordered was honestly quite tasteless. Noodles and vegetables were very bland. I added lots of chilli to finish my meal.

Fast paced (cafe style) restaurant. The atmosphere wasn't great. I found the staff quite miserable and not overly friendly. Quick service. Please note, it's cash only.

I am sharing the comment here since I saw a lot of comments bombarding my Wong Kei indicating the rudeness of their staff and some other negative comments...and I cant just be totally agreeing with those comments, so here is my comment please listen with your open heart; I went to this restaurant in year 1998-2000 and again in 2007 to 2012. I am now back in my home country for good...(for this, can regard myself as their old-time customer?) If you ask me about my eight years' experience being Wong Kei's dine in customer, I would say it is superb. The staff weren't particularly rude to anyone- it's just the way they are at a all-the-time-busy restaurant; and, it is so impressive that some of them could even speak my language (it either showed that a lot of people from my country visiting them or they paid attention to learn their regular customer's language to impress their customers). There was one time I went there and it was raining outside when I was about to leave the restaurant, one of the staff kindly asked me if I wanted to borrow his umbrella (if he ever gets to read this- "thank you very much for your kindness")...but I didn't take it since I was afraid that I might as well lose it. The food is pretty cheap compared to other Chinese restaurants around there...within less than 10 quid, you could be filled up and ready to march yourself through the China Town and Central London. The thing is we have to bare in mind that this is not a 5-star place so please do not expect high-class/classy manner kind of thing here. It is already super-cheap, super price-friendly and the food is delicious- their ducks were juicy. Their crispy pork was the best. I also loved their fried Kai-lan. Well, you must try their chilli oil with the fried rice- OMG- it really made my day! Thank you very much Wong Kei's team for your hospitality throughout my times in the U.K. If I ever have a chance to re-visit England- I will definitely go back to Wong Kei...so please wait for me, don't ever close down your restaurant! And, Yes, I highly recommend here!!!

Tis ok being in Chinatown and to be fair is great value for money, probably £10 cheaper than the opposition. For 8 we had 2 set meals, the starters were ok, not terribly hot and the breaded chicken wings were the value type sold at Tesco. Main was good but not terribly flavourful. Service ok if rushed and this is cash only so be prepared. Toilets are downstairs in a dirty, unkempt area, clearly no checking or cleaning, just a mess. It is what it is, at least you know.

Bring cash! (they don't accept card payments) Good(ish) value, I like the atmosphere because it reminds me of being in Asia, and the cost of the food is reasonable and more affordable than other places in Chinatown. Food tastes good but not the best. I got the pork belly on rice, it was alright - not amazing but still quite good. I came here for lunch with a couple of friends and it's a nice place to catch up, quite casual environment with no fuss service. Toilets are clean.

Food is up to standard but the service is really very poor (especially to Chinese and Hong Kong customers). We have 7 people and 3 of us are children. We ordered 4 dishes but was asked why we ordered just 4. We asked for another table but the answer was "No. That table is not for you!" The waiter was very rude.

Please everyone, if you want to eat asian food or chinese food, there is STILL many options that you can choose. PLEASE AVOID THIS BAD RESTAURANT. Not only were their staffs being RUDE and BAD ATTITUDE, but also the payment was received by CASH ONLY. Not gonna lie, this was my very first experience having BAD SERVICE. I went there on Saturday, 6th April 2024. I was with my husband and already ordered our menu. After finishing our dinner, my husband went out to ATM machine to get cash and I was alone waiting him inside (still waiting him at our table). While waiting, a waitress gave me a bill by THROWING it to me and she looked away. Goshh, so ridiculous. My bad not check on their google reviews first before deciding to eat there. I REALLY REGRET eating there. I promise, I will NEVER eat there again.

Today I was served by the rudest person I have ever come across, he really shouldn’t work in any industry that has contact with people. We ordered crispy duck but when it came it was very under cooked and soggy. I told the waiter and he proceeded to shout at us that’s how it is!

There was no soap at the bathroom. The waitress came in to check , she touched various surfaces at the toilet and did not wash her hands (as there was no soap). She directed me to the downstairs toilet snd went into the kitchen directly I once again asked her to wash her hands but she declined. There is this awful smell at the entrance- no wonder why it got 3 stars on googlemaps

Food: mediocre- no better (quite likely worse) than your local takeaway. Service: adequate but no more. Cash only: which was not mentioned when ordering and meant a hike round China town looking for an ATM. I can’t think of any good reason why a large business like this needs to be cash only. I can think of a few bad ones though.

most dishes are fine here and affordable. The best one I tried is bbq roast duck. Cash Only. mapo tofu and schezuan hot sour soup are a bit of disappointment, but the rest should be good. waitress was a bit rude, cleaning up while I was still eating, but I guess that is normal for a Chinese eatery.

I used to eat here once a month with friends when I lived in London for many many years. Brought five friends last night whilst on a visit. Unfortunately we were seated on the ground floor. Bright white walls and ceiling, like a doctors surgery, no atmosphere whatsoever. Toilets were beyond disgusting. Service was very good although our waitress felt it necessary to tell us at least 4 times there was no tip added to the bill and counted out the tip we had left her in front of us. Food was average to be honest, nothing apart from the unusual taste of the egg fried egg rice stood out. Quite disappointed really as I had told my friends what great food and atmosphere to expect. Can honestly say wouldn't turn again when visiting London.

Excellent canteen / cafe style place with service that has its own charm. I miss Jen cafe and this is a great replacement spot. The quality of food and the tea were perfect we enjoyed it all. We had broccoli, soup and egg fried rice and big pot of tea for £23. Broccoli was incredible. Didn’t feel rushed or fussed over. Toilets clean.
