We visited here during a week in holiday cottages near by, a great welcome and the fish and chips were excellent as was the home made tartar sauce

Best fish and chips we have had in years, always the same quality, friendly staff, spotlessly clean and great value 😀, one happy customer can’t wait to come back when we are in the area, highly recommend 😀

You only get one chance to make a first impression and these guys SMASHED it. What a great fish and chips shop. Our first visit to Winscombe Fish Bar, it's about 15 miles from us, but we were nearby. Am so glad I didn't read the miserable reviews below because they must be talking about somewhere else?? This place is a real down to earth fish n chip shop. The staff were fun, engaging and alive - totally on the ball, doing a great job and working very hard. They probably thought we were mystery shoppers by our very random order, but they really stepped up to please. Husband wanted a large haddock and Josh went over and above to oblige. He had three pieces of lovely haddock. The large chips were enough to keep him in chips for THREE nights!! Very generous portions. But the best bit for me is there really is a concerted effort to cater for vegetarians. On the menu were several of my favourites. I don't eat fish or like potato chips!! But Sweet Potato Fries, Halloumi burger, Pea Fritter and onion rings were on the menu. Just wow!! The halloumi burger was two large fat slices of my favourite cheese, dressed with salad and chilli sauce in a lovely soft burger bun. It was AMAZING. Thank you. The pea fritter - another winner - yum. The sweet potato fries went AWOL (unexpectedly out of stock) but the 'lads' dealt with that perfectly. We may not be back for a good few weeks, but we won't forget this place. If you live nearby or are staying nearby ignore the miseries and check it out yourself. It's a community asset that needs keeping alive. Use it or lose it. And thanks for the banter, great food and kindness you showed us, your professionalism is a credit to you and your business.

Poor experience. Most importantly, both the fish and chips tasted like they’d been sat about for a LONG time and kept warm - unpleasant texture and taste. Chips were steak cut; perhaps personal preference but it seems a bit strange to me for a chippy, more like a Wetherspoons or similar. My regular cod was served as what appeared to be a small cod and a chopped up extra bit from somewhere else, which just seems odd and meant it was dry. Unfortunate as this was our first time here-sadly we won’t be going again.

This has to be one of the worst in the country. When I visited the Cod was pre-formed fish bits battered just like Birdseye manufacture, so only one size medium. Price, the same as traditional large cod and chips so not worth the money. Go to Banwell much better value.

Finally reached the area I was staying in for the night and thought this place would be just the job to satisfy my hunger especially as the reviews seemed so good. Don't know if my own local chippy is just so good or whether this place is just so bad (of course...I do) but this is probably the worst f+c I've had in a very very long time and it wasn't cheap either but don't get me wrong I have no problem paying for good quality...but this really wasn't it. Tip to the owner/fryer...change the oil now and again for goodness sake...the chips were rank with burnt black bits all over them...I threw most away. Fish was rubbish as well. So a disappointing experience for me but maybe I was just unlucky and/or perhaps some of the reviewers are very easily pleased with inferior food. Tummy wasn't so good later on either...coincidence?

We have rerouted to Winscombe chippy After several bad experiences at the murphys fish bar at Churchill traffic lights . Absolutely super fish and chips from Winscombe. Fresh and good sized portions and really easy to order over the phone and collect. Will defo be recommending this takeaway and look forward to our next visit. Much rather travel the extra distance into Winscombe for super dinner and friendly staff

We were staying in the area for one night before catching a flight the next day. We decided to have Fish and chips. What a good decision we made 😀😀the Fish was the best I’ve ever had lovely chunks of white fish, not greasy just perfectly cooked.The chips were also lovely. Will definitely be going back when in the area.Just fantastic 😀😀 Highly recommended

Always go to Winscombe Fish Bar for our takeaways - it's the best in the area, fresh fish (and plenty of alternatives - chicken, sausage etc) well cooked chips all in value for money portions.

We had takeaway family meal here after setting up our pitch. Was the worst tasting fish fish and chips. Everything was overcooked or double cooked. Chips were awful. Not sure if we were not locals! But that shouldn't be the case.

Freshly cooked and giant portions made this an excellent start to our holiday. We had cod's roe and the chips were enormous - proper, traditional chippy. The fish was moist, beautifully cooked and we all enjoyed the combination very much. Brilliant.

The food was very nice, not soggy or greasy the chicken was nice and juicy. The portion size could be bigger. Now for the grumble..... The chap cooking was fairly polite but the others need a course in customer service, no please or thank you, in fact stroppy teenager comes to mind, if you know the film Kevin & Perry then you'll know what I mean. Obviously I'm not there for conversation but a little interaction and maybe some manners wouldn't go a miss. Oh yeah, no Gluten free options....

Certainly if you are hungry go to Winscombe Fish Bar, I advise their crunchy chicken & chips, the Giant haddock is also well worth waiting for it to be cooked.

Stopped here by chance while on holiday looking after our guy with LD /autism he loves his Friday fish and chips. On arrival back to the chalet we realised we had not got his gravy and mushy peas. The food was so nice I decided to go back the next night instead of KFC like the other s when I mentioned we not had his curry sauce and mushy peas they were so apologetic and my whole order was on the house. !!!! I insisted on paying but they would not let me. Super food and super staff , they even remembered our name from the night before , I recommend highly. I’m a really fussy eater and the food is the best ,, again thank you Winscombe chippy So much for our fish and chips. We ll be back each and every time we are in cheddar and we ll recommend you to all our freind s and family . THANK YOU.

I contacted the fish bar (from the USA where I live) to see if they could do a special delivery to my father-in-law for his 95th birthday, who hasn’t been out for months or seen his family for months. And they took care of it! Delivered on time, delicious food, and leftovers for a chip butty later. You guys are the best!

Always consistent with our food, perfectly cooked fish and chips, the batter is light and crispy. Friendly staff and queued out the door a lot of the time which is a brilliant sign. Portions very generous and great for the price. Even better that it’s only 2 minutes from my our house! Would highly recommend to anyone.

We had fish and chips at lunchtime the fish was solid and very dry inside and the batter was burnt on one side meanwhile the chips were soft and lukewarm as it was 11.45 am on a saturday i dont know when these chps were cooked!!! on that note we wont be going back for that reason. We had been previously a few months and everything was piping hot and lovely. Really disappointing.

The best in the area as far as we are concerned! The gluten free option is a relief too. Fish always freshly cooked and delicious.

Black soggy chips went straight in the bin. Uneadable meal of fish and chips. Unfortunately this is the second time we’ve wasted our money. Not to be recommended.

We phoned through a massive order consisting of about 21 orders on a Saturday evening and they coped extremely well when we went to collect the order we only had to wait for it all to be freshly wrapped. The food was delicious and hot and we all enjoyed our meal. The only let down was there was no menu to take away or anywhere to find it on line as we where told it was by the man who worked in there. Would recommend this chippy to all.

Would definitely recommend here to get your fish & chips. The chips were dry, crispy & fluffy. Great service and free parking available opposite.

Excellent chippie, with quite an extensive menu. Also does a 'special sunday' for gluton free. Friendly and normally efficient. Usually a small wait but worth it for freshly cooked fish and chips.

Excellent hand made fish cakes, packed full of flavour and a nice touch in a traditional fish and chip shop . Service was prompt and timely with little delay. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Myself and hubby came across this lovely chip shop, while on a bank holiday weekend away, both of us found the food delicious, and cooked while you wait, it couldn't be any fresher, and it also comes with a 5 rating on the door, I am very fussy when it comes to eating out as I'm very OCD, but I'd go back here anytime, it can be quite busy due to the great food, but it's definitely worth the wait , we're going back for our 2nd visit tonight yummmm .

It’s usually very busy here so you can phone through your order but food is always freshly cooked so it’s worth the wait. Always enjoyed our meals here and owner is really friendly. I know people who travel half an hour to come here because it’s so good! We’re lucky to live on the same road.

It’s a local chippy so if you want an open arm welcome then just visit a few times and you will get one. Brothers who run it are spot on and tease the staff more than the customers do which makes for a great fun atmosphere while your waiting.

This fish and chips bar is well known as the best in the area. One day a month it offers fish and chips suitable for gluten free customers. The portion sizes are very generous so you need to be sure not to over order on quantity. Orders taken over the phone to make it easier for collection without waiting.

I have visited this takeaway several times over the years and each visit has been consistently excellent. Yes one does have to wait while it is freshly cooked but it's worth the wait . The fish is white as snow and beautifully cooked to perfection.

Very good fish served here. Take away only but it is really good and tasty. Be careful about asking for large! We live nearby and it is always busy. They don't know what small means. On one occasion there were four of us with visitors. My wife asked for 3 large for the men and a standard for herself. On collection we got 3 giant and 1 large in my reckoning (same price - no, they didn't charge more) - and I'm a big eater. Another time we asked for large and they had run out so we got 2 standard each to make up for it - yes, you've guessed - 2 standard is much more than 1 large! Oh and you only need 1 chips between 2 - the chip portions are mega too! Very friendly guys who own it - see if you can work out which one of the identical twin brothers is serving you!

We did a phone order over the bank holiday as there was several of us staying on a nearby campsite and one of us went to collect about 30 mins later. The fish was great. Really good portions and the batter lovely and crisp. The only reason I am lowering the rating is because the chips were slightly overcooked and there was a great deal of oil left which ran out of my paper packing so that was a little unpleasant and there was a missed cheesy chips but we had so much we shared with her. It was very very busy there and we added to that chaos so they did cope very well and if that's all the was done it's not so bad. it suggests it's amazing when it's not so crazily packed out

Gorgeous chippy. Excellent Gluten free option once a month! Highly recommend. Staff are always happy especially the 2 owners. Food is cooked fresh and tastes lovely especially the homemade fishcakes

The Winscombe Fish Bar is fantastic: Gorgeous fish and chips, cooked to order, and great value. The batter is always light and crispy and does not drip with oil - far nicer than any fish and chips I have had elsewhere. The owner and staff are always friendly and polite and will go out of their way to give you the very best food and service. Highly recommended if you are in the area (and well worth the trip if you are not!).

We've eaten here for years! This chip shop is fantastic and the people who own it are brilliant at what they do. We just love the food and the service. I also notice how kind they are to the more elderly locals. We've just had to go gluten free, so we're thrilled about gluten free Sundays. That is something we'll take advantage of. If it can be more often then that'll be amazing, but I guess it all has to do with the changing of the cooking oils and deep cleaning of the premises and utensils, to meet regulations, so understandable.

The food from this fish bar is consistently tasty and good value for the price. In particular the large cod and chips will easily feed two people. Highly recommend!

My elderly parents have been long-term customers at Winscombe fish bar. Sadly my mother recently died of Alzheimer's at the age of 85.On the day of the funeral we had visitors staying, along with my 91 year old father. When we went to collect our 14 meals that evening, the proprietor refused to accept payment, instead asking that we donate the amount to Alzheimer's Research, our chosen charity . You are wonderfully generous people and a credit to your community.Infinite thanks to you all

The last Sunday of every month is Gluten Free Sunday, a time when my family & I have our fix of Fish & Chips.The Haddock is simply wonderful, the service great & the overall experience brilliant.The availability of Gluten Free Fish & Chips, sausages, pies, chicken strips, etc., is lovely. The fact that they taste so good is the icing on the cake.Yes, on Glutrn Free Sundays the Chip Bar is very busy, but so it should be with the product so good.Highly recommended.

Never been disappointed when coming here for fish supper which we do about once a month, it's definitely the best fish and chip shop for miles around.

I have frequented this Fish Bar on a number of occasions and my experiences are mixed to say the least. To begin, the fish cakes are massively over seasoned with grey pepper making the cakes inedible. The chips which should be the staple of measure of any good fish and chips are weak to say the least, they vary from who is cooking them hugely and are either a solid 3/5 when cooked correctly and can drop to 1/5 on the drop of a hat. I've visited this spot over a dozen times in 6 years and can say I'm very disappointed, in fact I am so disappointed and perplexed by these glowing reviews I would urge any saying this fish spot is stellar to either go to the coast (not Weston) or go to Bristol to visit Catch22 or any of the other excellent fish and chips shops they have to offer.The efforts for a gluten free option are admirable and bump my review up by 1 point.To summarise steer away, and if you can't, pray it's the right twin cooking.

Winscombe Fish Shop did the food for my party held at Winscombe Club just a few doors up they did fish and chips or sausage and chips for 65 people and it all came out on time pipping hot and delicious I had so many lovely comments about the food and what a great idea it was well done to Andrew, Ian and team I can highly recommend thank you for all your efforts !

After 12 years of going to this fish and chip shop I can honestly say that the level of customer service has diminished. I popped in last Friday, ordered and paid. There was an event going on at the village hall and a large order had been placed. 20 minutes later the person in front of me got up and demanded their money back for the amount of time they had had to wait to be served. 10 minutes on and still no one had acknowledged the fact that I had been waiting for 30 minutes and I had not even been told that there was going to be a delay. I asked if I was going to have to wait for another 20 portions to be put up before I was served and the sneering girl on the till just answered "yep". I asked for my money back. This was thrown at me and when I asked for am apology all three members of the team including one of the owners just looked at me.Well I used to think that the chip shop in Winscombe was one of the best in the area especially for customer service. What has happened to manners??It would have taken you two seconds to just apologise. Well you have lost a loyal customer and I shall be making friends and family aware.

This Fish Bar has been around for decades and rarely disappoints. The fish is always fresh and they will cook to order if you want. Portions are very generous and the batter great. Highly recommended.

Always our first choice for takeaway when we're staying nearby for a holiday. It gets busy as it's so popular and you can often be queuing out the door. Everything cooked fresh so it can sometimes mean a bit of a wait, but it's well worth it.Highly recommend it - my tip for the fish lovers is that sometimes the fish portion can be quite big so you may want to share one between two :-)

We stayed near Winscombe recently and bought fish, chips and mushy peas on a Monday night. The fish and chips were nothing out of the ordinary and the peas were peculiarly solid. Rather a disappointment.

With regards to the food, this place is bang on average/good. I have never had a problem with any order I have placed here over the last 5 years. The inside is very clean and the food is fresh.

I began coming here a few years ago, after discovering the whitebait, and my daughter and I would sit in the car park with our meals, listening to music in the car before I dropped her home. She drives now, but I've moved in locally, and treat myself occasionally. The food is great quality. Tonight, though, I witnessed a military operation :) The people in front of me were buying for what appeared to be a campsite, yet the staff met the challenge calmly & efficiently , despite the intense heat in there. Well done, Guys!

I go to this family run business every Friday night. Our favourite is the Haddock and the Chicken which is all very fresh and hot. The chicken is cooked on a rotisserie and the fish portions are very generous. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Sometimes have to wait a bit due to the popularity but it's worth it.

We often use this fish and chip shop. We order a variety of fish based meals which are always freshly cooked, hot and generous in their portion size. People come from far and wide to get food from this take-away fish bar and this is unsurprising given the quality and generosity of the owners and staff

Despite a good few miles drive, and a wait of half an hour on a Friday night its worth it! The orders are all prepared freshly and of course Fridays is exceptionally busy hence he wait, But definitly the best chippy around with crispy on the outside chips, soft and fluffy inside and nicely crisp batter on the fish and excellent prices. I always travel to this one rather than use the two more local ones

I used to live in Sandford and there was only one place to go for Fish and Chips and that Winscombe Fish Bar. I now live in the USA went back in April for 2 weeks and straight to the bar. I was not disappointed. Full of flavor, large portions, hot and delicious. Do not miss out if you are in the area.

The best take away fish and chip shop in the area! The last Sunday in the month is Gluten free night and it's a fabulous opportunity for those with wheat allergies etc to try the delicious food on offer. We're not 'gluten free' but always really enjoy the fabulous gluten free, crispy batter that coats the fish on those nights.

The battered fish is very good and good size portions too - hubby and son say it's great; the chips are OK. I cannot eat wheat, but I can get still get fish (unbuttered) and chips which is great. We can phone up and order which makes life easier.

Quite simply, this is the best fish and chips that you're likely to get for miles around. Quality and portion size are always paramount, and everything is cooked fresh to order. This may present problems to anyone wanting a quick 'in and out' visit - in that circumstance, I would advise anybody to telephone your order through so that you won't have to wait in the shop....it's very popular! They also (thoughtfully) cook a gluten-free menu on one Sunday each month. Highly recommended!

I go there several times a year and have done for a number of years. Its a bit of a drive for us but always worth it.Cooked to order just for you. . Worth the drive. And there is a car park over the road so you can eat it with your car doors open on a sunny evening. Then pop in to the local pub. . Excellent.

Everything is cooked to order. The service, food and value for money are excellent. The portion sizes are very generous. My wife and I are big eaters but we find that a portion of chips between two is still too much. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Used this place regularly and have never been disappointed. Great range to choose from. They also do a gluten free menu

Tend to visit Winscombe 2 or 3 times a year & always found the food to be vey good here, and as others have said, portions are huge! On this visit we phoned our order in and collected it later - the place was packed. A line of people out the door, which is always a good sign, and as we'd pre-ordered we didn't have to wait too long. Plenty of free parking nearby (right outside the door if you're lucky).Also worth noting that the curry from next door is good too if you have a family who can't agree on what they want!Shame it's 100 miles from home!

We are local and eat here a couple of times a month. The quality is excellent, however that's because almost everything is cooked to order. Don't expect to walk in and take your meal away 2 minutes later. Do expect to chat with locals and then take home crisp, well cooked, hot food. When you arrive, especially at peak times, most people in the shop will be waiting to collect their meals. Just smile and walk up to the till to order. Bring your smartphone we have 4G in the village now.

There's a nearer fish & chips place but we would rather drive here. Ring the order in and it's ready for you. HUGE portions are well-prepared. If they think the size is too small they give you 2 pieces! Always nice & fresh with good crunchy batter. Delicious!

Living in Winscombe we have been here lots of times for tea. The food is freshly cooked and the portions are huge!! I love the home made fish cakes as well as the fish and chips. Nothing is too much trouble for them, including dietary requirements. I've eve converted mum and dad from going into Weston from Locking to get their fish and chips and coming to Winscombe.

Our 10 yr old son's review on this fish and chip shop, was "best chips I've ever...........had" he was still eating them. They were great big, chunky chips... Will go again.

Huge fish! Chips are always great and a lot of choice on the menu. Always a good sign of a good chippy if the queue is out the door and it always seems to be here.
