Windsor Restaurant in Cookstown

If you want to relive the heyday of high teas, you should book one at the Royal Hotel, Cookstown. Our party of 7 was treated to an old-style dining experience, in bright and tastefully decorated surroundings, thanks to our excellent waitress. Roslyn's attention to detail and to our dining needs were exceptional. We had what seemed to be three bottomless tea pots on the go; delicious sandwich fingers with an assortment of tasty savoury fillings; scones, jam and cream; muffins and a variety of exquisite slices all placed on three towering cake plates - a veritable cornucopia. At regular intervals Roslyn and her staff checked if we needed refills, that we were comfortable, provided boxes for us to take home excess goodies, and even demonstrated her excellent skills as a photographer, ably capturing our reunion of Northern Irish and Australian cousins for posterity. At all times Roslyn was professional, unobtrusive, polite, friendly, and caring - reminding us of days gone by when dining out was an absolute pleasure thanks to excellent cuisine served by staff who provided outstanding and friendly service.

This is a restaurant I always rave about and would have it in my top 5 favourite places to eat.. We were in on Saturday evening and left really disappointed by a few things,firstly after ordering our meal and drinks it took about half an hour for our drinks to come,after waiting for approximately 20 minutes I went into the bar to see what was happening and there was only one young girl serving drinks herself and she was very busy so I just went and sat back down... When we went into get our meal after waiting almost an hour it was very poor,my steak was meant to be rare but was cooked well done and was very fatty and hard to cut even with the steak knife also my champ was really dry and had obviously been under a heat lamp too long,my wife was also not impressed,her chicken was ok but soggy onion rings and her diane sauce was far too thick,the service wasn’t great either which is unusual,not one asked if everything was ok for us.... Hopefully this was a one off as it’s somewhere we love to dine.

Was at a function in the hotel on Saturday night. Myself and a group of friends decided to go for something to eat in the restraunt, food was fab and our waiter was very attentive. However we then placed a drinks order which we had to ask for twice and only arrived when we were finished our meal, the young fella who brought our drinks to the table was wearing white gloves when some of my party made a passing joke about the gloves the staff member told him to "f**k of" and as we walked of from the table pretended to scratch his head but actually gave us the fingers, our waiter who obviously over heard this advised us that he has a skin condition and needs to wear gloves. I found this very offensive and rude and have never been spoken to in such a manner before, think if this young fella is going to work with customers he needs to learn how to communicate to customers in a more appropriate way and needs retrained in people skills. Will never be back in this establishment again, extremely disappointing experience that ruined a good evening catching up with friends!!

Although I did not stay in the hotel what I did see of it was beautiful. The toilets were of a high standard and the carvery was delicious with around 6 different meats to pick from. The interior is very classy and modern.

We were very pleased by the kind service and generous portions served at lunchtime. Definitely a favourite with the local seniors and families. As my daughter is a picky eater, they put together requested items off the menu to serve as a meal and I think we ordered some lunch specials that were definitely under 10 GBP and very filling. On menu were steaks, salads, burgers, soups, sandwiches and lighter fare. Separate gluten-free menu. Cloth tablecloths, carpeted floors, clean WCs, waitstaff very pleasant and patient. It's all good. Great value for money. We recommend!

Have to say it's my favourite restaurant and I go to many different restaurants to try different menus but this is the best,excellent food all the time and service is the best I've seen nothing is too much trouble and I'm a really fussy eater. I always choose of the menu and change wee bits of it to suit my liking never any problems and always done with a smile so well done to all the staff the Lennox family

I've stayed here three times before .The hotel overall is very good , staff are extremely friendly and helpful, rooms are clean and spacious, the beer is also very good but the food is excellent !!!

Very disappointed. We ordered our meal just as Sunday carvery was finishing and I honestly think our chips were the leftovers just reheated. Steak was overcooked and not very tasty! This used to be our favourite restaurant but I wouldn't be in a hurry back. Staff are always pleasant and attentive tho.

Just moved back to cookstown and honestly I like the Royal hotel. It's family friendly. Staff are pretty good and the place is laid back. The menu has recently changed and on both occasions I ordered the t bone steak. The first time I put it down to being overcooked but after the second time and requesting medium I think the quality of the steak is very very poor. Poor cut and dry. The chicken stir fry was fine but honestly I would prefer if these country places would concentrate less on portion sizes that no normal person could or should comfortably eat and focus on quality. My last visit was a Monday night. The bar area was completely empty and we sat down and the table beside was dirty. The chairs had food items. Also the menus , if you are goin to invest in nice new menus then it is wasted when they are covered in finger prints and food stains. Come on please owner sit down in your restaurant and look around. You have such a potential as the food in cookstown is poor beyond belief and unfortunately you have failed with this new food relaunch. Go and visit some nice restaurants around Belfast or anywhere and order some of your food and compare. Basically it's cheap, massive portions , which may have worked 15 years ago but things have changed albeit not in cookstown and the Royal is not the only place. I will go again and try other things on the menu. I mean 10 quid for a stir fry that would feed 2 with an extra side, great if your standards aren't so high. Very happy to update my review when and if things improve. I'd be happy to pay more for the steak and get a decent cut. Who wants to pay 21 quid for a steak with no flavour. I'd rather pay the typical 32 for a t bone and have a big juicy thick steak. I appreciate the clientele may be price conscious but I suppose it's a bit like Gordon Ramsey's kitchen nightmares, the people you will gain by serving great food will more than make up for regulars you will lose. Just my suggestions and take what you like and what you don't. However I see another review here mentioned the dirtiness and he questioned the integrity of the reviews. Staff are verbally attentive but when doing nothing instead of talking they could be cleaning. Whilst I won't do that I was very surprised so little bad reviews were present :) Best wishes.

Today myself and 3 friends had afternoon tea. I was blown away by the large spread of food we were given and how fresh and beautiful it all was. There were loads of different sandwiches and scones traybakes etc and even a dinky funky little soup which was fab. I cannot recommend it enough and service was brilliant such friendly helpful girls. I visit often for food and am never disappointed by the large tasty portions of fresh fabulous food. Keep up the good work Royal Hotel Cookstown

I went to his hotel for a family evening meal This place is unbelievable and the tripadvisor review are truely unbelievable Dining room dirty with numerous flies Food well below standard - a mobile catering van is more appealing On going loud work in reception Toilets were absolutely discussing and dirty I would not like to see the kitchen if the front of house is so bad This place is terrible / avoid One for the Hotel Inspector or Ramsays Hotel Hells Even they would leave

This is a restaurant we visit regularly and never be disappointed,the food is always to perfection even at larger functions "weddings,parties etc" we are never disappointed. We as a family eat out regularly throughout the province and have to say the Royal is our favourite and the friendliness of the staff is a bonus

After fantastic evening meals at this restaurant it was disappointing to find the breakfast wasn't to the same standard. My scrambled egg was overdone and there were no options of mushrooms or beans to my knowledge. Staff however continued to shine.

Comí aquí con mi esposa ya que tenemos varias veces antes (incluyendo nuestra boda) y tamaño, como siempre, la comida era excelente, bien preparado, bien presentado, con buenas porciones y una gran variedad de menú, especialmente la carne, el personal era excelente como de costumbre, nada era demasiada molestia y siempre a mano para asegurarse de que teníamos otra gran experiencia. Si alguna vez te encuentras en la zona de cookstown llame en el Hotel Royal, donde recibirá una cálida bienvenida y una comida estupenda a cualquier hora del día o de la noche.

El 'señoras ¡almuerzo visitadas este encantador restaurante a principios de enero, la comida era deliciosa, todos optamos por el Pavo y jamón (todavía en el espíritu de la Navidad: -). Seguimiento desierto era 2 por pavlova y uno para apple cayera (si has leído mis otros comentarios para que "las señoras" verás que la 'apple cayera lady" sigue siendo fiel a su primer amor desierto). Si te encuentras en Cookstown Este restaurante está bien merece una visita.

I ate here as I was staying in the hotel and was pleasantly surprised. The food was very good and you got a lot. The service was efficient but friendly. Highly recomended

This is a lovely place to dine, whether in restaurant or wine bar. Food is always warm, nicely presented, tasty and good portions. It is suitable for young or old and has easy access for disabled/elderly etc.

My son and I called in for lunch at The Windsor during the week. I haven't been in The Royal Hotel in over 20 years and always remember it as good but fairly basic but after reading the reviews on tripadvisor I was keen to try it again. On entering the hotel the receptionist advised we could either dine in the restaurant or the lounge. On glancing into the restaurant I could see it was fairly empty but we wanted the more relaxed surroundings anyway so opted to eat in the lounge. It was 1pm but we had a choice to sit almost anywhere. The waitress was friendly and helpful in taking our order and discussing different options. The menu itself was good with a wide range catering for most people. We both chose the chicken fillet with bacon and pepper sauce with garlic fries and it was very, very tasty, so much so I can still taste it now as I think about it.Two delicious main courses with water for under £20 it was certainly worth returning to this restaurant after so long and will definitely be back again.

Food and service could not be beat.the girls are all brilliant.The Sunday carvery is great value for money and they do a special rate for o.a p's

This is by far the nicest place to eat in Cookstown great staff and gorgeous food I go here regularly and have no complaints definitely recommend

We eat at the Royal Hotel as a family as there is always something on the menu to suit everybody. The staff are friendly & good at their jobs. The portions tend to be on the large size but the quality of the food is always good. We find that it always offers good value for money so would recommend it to anybody visiting Cookstown.

I stayed at the Royal hotel and ate in the resteraunt three nights.Over all the food quality was good. Gammon and pork steak were freshly cooked and tasty. My only comment would be to have a fresh vegetable option as a optional side with the main meals. Also I feel the potatoes which come with butter should not be swimming in it. The portions were of a good size and The service was curtious and friendly.

This restaurant is lovely to dine in. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The portions are a really good size and the food tastes great. My husband and I would dine here and we could not fault it. We recently had an addition to the family and it was the first place we had taken our son out somewhere for dinner. The staff made sure that our son was content between toys etc and serving his food faster so when my main was ready I could enjoy it. We will definitely be returning here for a meal again.

On a Saturday trip to Cookstown to visit a elderly relation in a local care home my wife and I together with my mother in law visited The Royal for lunch--Friendly staff,good service,homely menu--just great all round--I would have no reason to think that it wouldn't score highly for any meal at any time of the day.

I visit this hotel very regularly and have been coming back for years.The food is excellent and very reasonably priced. What ever you request they will accommodate you. The staff are friendly and very helpful and really attentive. I will continue to visit as this hotel is one of my favourite place's to eat.

Two friends and I had the pleasure of an Afternoon Tea at The Royal Hotel Cookstown today. We had a lovely afternoon, the service was great and the food was just perfect. This was our first time at The Royal Hotel but it certainly will not be our last.

The Hotel has ample parking, friendly staff at Reception and on arrival in the Dining Room. A La Carte and Table D'Hote menus available, both keenly priced. Excellent for pre theatre dining.

We dine here at the royal hotel regularly , the food is excellent, cooked to your liking, great value for money, they even do a special 3 course meal with plenty of choice on menu for only £15-☆ all served by very friendly helpful staff, will definitely dine here again

Always had excellent food in The Royal - can't beat it if you want a traditional "dinner". Really friendly staff and relaxing atmosphere.

The service was really excellent, we were served very quickly after we arrived. The starters were very good. The main courses were excellent. The desserts were very tasty. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. They were very courteous. Our main server was Finlay as far as I remember. She was excellent. All our ladies really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. We would certainly recommend this venue as a place to eat. We will be back and in fact we are returning again on the 25th November. We are looking forward to it.

Staff most pleasant and efficient....food definitely value for moneyAtmosphere was warm and friendly..it was just so homely to dine in.

We always dine in the Royal. Never had a poor meal yet and have been going there for more years than I want to remember. Quality is excellent, presentation excellent. Coffee with a couple of biscuits is a nice we treat, not many places you'd get biscuits or mince pie with your coffee or tea. The staff are not bad either, pleasant very understanding with doting seniors. In all we love it as did our Canadian cousins. They always insisted going there a few times during their holidays. And they were difficult to please at times being fussy eaters. We've been to quite a few parties and weddings down the years and always had a excellent time and food exceptional.

Carvery, always a great selection and never hungry afterwards and just took my daughter and her friends to the frozen party for her birthday which was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by them all... Staff always willing to help in any way and food always of a very high standard.... Looking forward to my next visit... High tea ☺

The Windsor Restaurant has a very homely and friendly atmosphere. It offers a wide range menu of good food at competitive prices.

I had lunch here withmy 2 daughters recently. We were greeted promptly and service was very good. The menu had a great variety of dishes to choose from, ranging from soup and light bites to more substantial meals such as steak and mixed grill. Also, the children's menu had plenty of options instead of just the normal sausages and chips!!! The price was very reasonable for a hotel and our food arrived quickly, hot, well presented and exactly what we had ordered. Staff were pleasant and helpful. I have dined at the Royal before many times and will continue to do so, mainly because the food and service is so good.

I have never been let down in The Royal Hotel, always excellent. No matter what you order you can be sure it will be to your taste. The staff are also excellent and only to keen to provide you with anything you require.

The best food ever tasted....and the fruit pavlova was amazing. Staff made you feel at ease and happy to have a conversation.Going to a regular stop in future..Most welcoming staff we've ever encountered.

Lasagne which lacked taste using poor mince and served with garlic fries drowned in a puddle of strange coloured oily goo. Both lacked flavour, we wanted to take out wat we had paid for but couldn't eat to feed to the dog but were told if it was reheated and we got sick royal hotel would be at fault...so wat your telling us is that it's reheated food, lovely! Not!Staff miserable, obviously not an enjoyable place to work.Most definitely won't be back.

We went on Sunday 24th feb 2013 for my daughters birthday. It was kids Sunday and it was brilliant. There was 6 adults and 1 child in our party. The carvery was fantastic, great value for money and the service was brilliant. Thanks will be back again.

As regulars to the royal, i have to say, it depends what chef is on. we ordered our food and the pepper sauce def had to be the worst ive ever tasted. they must make it up with brandy. but there was more brandy in it than anything else... absolutly ruined the meal. 1 night we also ordered the Full stack which is meant to have garlic bread in it...again they conveinatly forgot about it. also i ordered chicken which is meant to have gravy... they sent us out pure chicken stock which was stinking to say the least. when u get the right chef its fantastic...but the wrong 1 is awful. sometimes i think its the waiters that stand in as an amatuer chef instead of the normal 1. one advice royal., put ur money into a good chef and take note of what exactly people order.

We visited in July while we were over in Ulster for a few days.I had a sirloin steak with champs and fresh veg. I can honestly say it was the best steak I have ever had !Not only was it thick and succulent but it was trimmed to perfection and cooked to medium thoughout (not partly medium and partly medium rare or well done). I was able to actually leave my plate completely clear which is a rare thing for me.My wife ordered a mixed grill and the serving was so substantial that she wasn't able to finish it all - another rare occurence !If we lived local we would eat there on a regular basis that's for sure.
