Best pies in London! Great midweek treat, tucked away in Mayfair. We had to make a hard choice as all the pies sounded delicious, we ended up with the steak and mushroom. Amazing quality and fantastic service from Danny - very attentive and accommodating. Thank you, we will be back!

First time I have been to this place I was stunned. I had the best pie I have ever had here. This time though it didn't live up to the expectations. I brought my girlfriend, eulogising this place since I had been which was roughly one year ago. The steak and kidney was not what I remembered at all. It had whole mushrooms in it which were more than the meat itself, and not listed as ingredients on the menu. Now, I am not British but I know that steak and kidney doesn't come with mushrooms traditionally, and you add them for some reason, you have the list it as one of the ingredients, since it was the main ingredient in terms of quantity basically . They even have a steak and mushroom pie on the menu so where is the logic in that? I had ordered another pie myself and told my girlfriend to get that one cause it was supposedly amazing. It wasn't and I even like mushrooms. The problem is the she doesn't and we had to swap pies in the end. When I asked the staff about it they lied about it and weren't really apologetic. Not even trying to make up for the awful situation.

An authentic pub where you can taste classic British dishes such as the fish and chips and the shepherd's pie. It also proposes multiple pastry pies that are rich and tasty, ranging from the classic steak & ale pie to more unique recipes. Some of them have been awarded as Gold Award from the Great British Pie Awards and trying them you really understand why! Additionally, the pub offers tasty homemade puddings including vegan and gluten free options. Special thanks to Magdalena for her sympathy and great service!

Disappointing experience and lack of accountability. Pay attention to the recent reviews that say the food quality has declined. I visited The Windmill on 17th January with my partner to try their much-hyped pies. I had the chicken pie, which was fine, while he had the seafood pie. Within a few hours, he became violently ill, vomiting over 25 times throughout the night. We struggled to get home as he was unable to move without getting sick. I tried calling the pub multiple times that evening to warn them, but no one answered. The next day, I finally got through and was referred to Food Alert, a third-party food safety consultancy hired by Young’s Brewery. After two weeks of "investigation," they responded that they could not determine the cause of his illness, citing a "lack of evidence" (no stool sample, which was impossible given his condition) and wrongly assuming the cause was something he ate abroad—despite the fact that he had been in the UK for nearly three weeks, and we had shared every meal together at home except this one. We also contacted NHS 111 three times, speaking to a nurse on each call. They strongly advised going to A&E, but my partner was too unwell to move. This is all documented. Their investigation focused entirely on their records rather than acknowledging that food safety procedures do not guarantee mistakes never happen. Given the severity of his illness, the most likely cause was improper reheating or mishandling of the seafood pie. We were offered nothing, not even a refund for the meal. We were not looking for anything unreasonable: just a fair acknowledgement of what happened and compensation for the ruined evening, multiple taxi fares, and the cost of the meal. The lack of responsibility, the delayed response, and the unwillingness to offer even a goodwill gesture were extremely disappointing. The Windmill may have once been known for its pies, but given other reviewers mentioning the food quality as of late, I strongly advise caution before dining here.

It’s a pub with the best pie! If you love pie and mash this place is for you. If I’m in London I go here for pie and mash it’s a simple dish but tastes good and is cooked well. Steak pie is what I usually go for but I’ve also tried the chicken and both just as good as each other. I would recommend this food. Pie is £25 which seems expensive for what it is but you are in Mayfair. Always very busy so you may struggle to get a table. Would I go back? Yes!

I also liked that it was a casual pub. I'm going to London in June this year, so I'm planning to meet up with some friends here. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー In June 2024, six people from Japan gathered here at Windmill the day before the narrowboat departure. The Windmill in Mayfair could benefit from some attention to detail. The pub is in desperate need of redecoration, and a thorough clean wouldn’t go amiss—there were visible fingerprints all over the television screen, which looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time. As for the food, it was okay but far from exceptional. My chicken dinner was disappointingly dry. What really let the experience down was the addition of a service charge. The menu states it applies to groups of four or more, but there were only three of us. While I paid it without question, it did leave a sour note—I would have tipped more generously otherwise, so it actually saved me a few pounds! Overall, I expected more from a Young’s pub in central London. Unfortunately, the experience felt a little underwhelming.

Food: - delicious black pudding scotch egg -Ok shepherd’s pie. not tasty enough but hearty with lots of ingredients. small portion. vegetables were overcooked, like those from a vegetable stock. very unpleasant and tasteless. - roast beef tough like rubber sole. almost inedible. we finished it anyways as we didn’t wanna waste food. Atmosphere: we were seated right next to the entrance where the door kept being opened and not closed properly. It’s very cold almost like sitting outdoor. would be nice if there’s a heat lamp of something. the place was half empty, should consider not seating guests there. Service: One of the staffs that served us could be considered rude. Teaching us like we were kids that in here we should order drinks first. did not offer choice of how cooked the roast beef we would like. so i would have guessed there’s only 1 delicious option. After I finished my pint, i wasn’t offered a second pint. For half an hour i’d been trying to get the attention of the staffs, but most of them just avoid eye contacts. I finally had to wave and grab one’s attention but that staffs just told me in a bad tone that she’s busy with something else, later on she came back and i decided not to spend anymore at this place ever.

UPDATE - we returned to this pub, this time on a Sunday. The pies again were outstanding but on Sundays they serve it with essentially the same sides as a Sunday roast but all was average, not very hot and didn’t go. We asked for mash instead of roast potatoes (as a table of 8 we all wanted this) and they said no. We were there for over 3 hours because the service was so slow. We had to ask for the dinner menus after waiting ages for them to attend the table (prior to this nobody even came to ask for our drinks order). We had to ask for more drinks again because nobody attended our table throughout. And then when we asked for the dessert menu because again we waited so long we experienced deja vu as they said the kitchen was closing in 20 mins so we had to order on the spot. This is frustrating considering they didn’t clear our table, nor bring desserts menu knowing we would be out of time. If we hadn’t had asked for the menu again we would have missed the opportunity or order dessert. Poor and slow service with staff having no awareness at any stage of our dining of actually serving the table. And then adding 12.5% tip to the bill when nobody once proactively came to our table . . . ! It’s just not worth it The pies are so damn tasty. We had 1) chicken, bacon & leak, 2) pigs cheek, rabbit & prune pie 3) crab, king prawn & haddock pie. All were delicious, their suet pie more similar to a traditional pastry pie. I would however suggest not bothering with the dauphine potatoes which was swimming in oil & butter, literally a pool of it. The only disappointment was weren’t offered the dessert menu and when we asked if they had dessert they did but the kitchen had closed. They did kindly offer to make us something still which was kind but we decided not to knowing the kitchen was closed

Disappointed. Read lots of glowing reviews BUT our experience fell far short of expectations. We only had 'award winning' pies (not sure what awards they achieved). Venison, steak and chicken pies were OK but underwhelming. And as for the fish pie should be re- named mashed potato pie - there was no fish! Yes happily exchanged for the trout but ruined our 'eating together' birthday meal. And the cost was exhorbitant for such basic fare. The tip at nearly £15.00 was the final straw and removed at my request. My recommendation, eat in a restaurant not a pub, (Boulevard Brasserie, Covent Garden is a gem)

Our table was booked for 1315 - by which time there was no steak and stilton pie, no duck leg confit, no lemon tart. I had game terrine with kohlrabi remoulade and soda bread - there was no butter for the bread, the game terrine was dry and flavourless, the kohlrabi remoulade was crunchy but very little dressing. I chose the potted pie: fisherman's pie of smoked salmon, king prawn and Atlantic haddock. The pie was very watery as if it had been cooked from frozen, there was no colour on the mash which was rapidly dissolving into the accompanying liquid, one piece of salmon (not smoked as far as I could detect) one piece of haddock and the single prawn was certainly not king. The accompanying spinach was neither creamed nor wilted and looked and tasted like it had been waiting a long time on a hot plate. dessert: cheese and crispbread. No optional butter, the crispbread was tasty and crunchy, the Stilton was very good as was the Bath soft. However, the Pitchfork cheddar was conspicuous by its absence and we were informed they had run out of that as well. The pub was busy and only one person serving on the first floor.

Spectacular food and atmosphere. Recommended if you come to London. Authentic London atmosphere Now, be careful with service charges. Make it clear when you receive the bill that you do not want to pay the fee, which is nothing more and nothing less than 12.5% This is already a recommendation for almost all restaurants in London. I lowered it to 3 stars because after asking about the rate, even knowing what it was, they tried to convince me that it was something inevitable in the city. Food, attention and atmosphere of 10, a shame that because of these things you have an inferior experience.

Hard to complain when they taste so good, but no refund was offered - and the second time it even happened after I told our waitress about the first time and she promised it wouldn't happen again. I'm beginning to wonder if they actually have any venison pies, or if they just serve everyone the steak and mushroom and hope nobody notices...

Arrived for our dinner reservation and were seated. Waited 5 mins before going to the bar and asking for a menu. Waited another 10 mins and approached a waitress and asked if we could order and were told to sit and someone would be with us. Waited 10 mins again with no service, went to the same waitress again and asked if we could order. I was told “Yeah, I said I’d be right with you”. As I walked back to the table my partner told me that the waitress made a face at me behind my back. So we decided to leave. Atrocious customer service.

really cool night of dancing and singing along so fun to see the girl in the cloakroom suddenly dancing on the table... quite pricey and gets very packed but you expect that in soho.

We had a great lunch here on a very cold day. The chicken hot pot and the pig in blankets on a hot roll are very recommendable.
