My husband and I have been coming to the Wickentree for over 10 years and unfortunately we won’t be back again. We came a few months back and had a bad experience and meal but thought it may have been a one off but no today was even worse. My husband went up to pay and was told there was a 20-25min wait for the afternoon tea he said that was okay, the coffees were brought out soon after ordering they were lukewarm. After waiting 55 minutes for food my husband eventually asked about our food, the girl never came back to tell us the out come but 5 minutes later someone “rushed” out our food I say “rushed” as that’s what it was. All the food apart from the fish and chips were cold, the steak sandwich was just a piece of cold gristle and a bit of meal so much so my husband went to bite into it and the gristle just slid off the sandwich and it was hanging from my husbands mouth you couldn’t bite through it, so that was left. The gravy in the Yorkshire pudding was cold and congealed again that was left. They forgot to add the tartar sauce for the fish and chips, along with the clotted cream for the scone I had to ask for both of these items at separate times during my meal. There was no extra cutlery to cut the scone and add the cream and Jam so just wiped the one I had use for my meal on the napkin and then quickly found the scone was hard and stale when I accidentally dropped it on the plate with a thud. So at £30 per person it’s a lot to pay for 4 chips, a small piece of fish and then the rest of the meal was cold. They obviously forgot to send our meal out and left it waiting on the side then rushed it out with items missing. Not worth the money, won’t be eating here again and they need to employ more staff especially at dinner/lunch when it’s really busy. It’s such a shame as it used to be a really nice place to eat especially at this time of year with the Christmas shop downstairs.

Definitely 5 out of 5! We went as a family with 2 young children and felt so welcome! The cater to everyone! Now do expect to pay a pretty penny for the food however it’s worth every penny! The food is devine, I paid £17.50 for the steak sandwich but it melted in your mouth and the bread was so soft!! We’ll 110% be back again! Even the kids menu had amazing choices!!

Nice place, food good, staff excellent but most annoying thing is having to go to the counter to order, pay, then sit down. Then if you want a dessert or another coffee you have to do it again. The place is not inexpensive so surely they could trust the waitresses (no waiters) to take your order?

I love the wickentree restaurant for lots of reasons! Firstly the staff are wonderful especially Bex, June, Joe, Diana & Natalie they go above and beyond! The food is fab extensive breakfast menu which is mainly the time I go. I’ve introduced lots of friends and they all love it too! Also if you have a privilege card you get 20% off until 11.45am. Comfy seats and you can thoroughly relax there’s never a time when I’ve felt rushed or pressured to leave! In fact I’ve been known to go at 10am and leave at 4pm on more than one occasion! Well worthy of the 5 stars I’ve awarded

I ordered classic fish and chips. Looked fine when it arrived. But when I tasted it, it was absolutely terrible. The chips were so soggy and oily. It was my first time at wickertree and I'm so disappointed and it was so expensive so expected it to be muchbetter. I just don't want other people to be under any illusions the food is very poor and very expensive. Will NEVER eat here again.

Needs a sign saying 'no waitress service!' Very mixed food reports - Sunday Roast fine, with generous children's portion. Curry good, but plate was dirty. Most disappointing was Cheese and Onion Pie: flaky pastry might be OK south of Watford Gap, but this just disintegrated into the filling making it quite unpleasant. Not much atmosphere. I have eaten here many times in the past but I have noticed standards steadily going downhill. My daughter and myself had the full English which has diminished in size considerably. We had two overcooked rashers of bacon. Two very skinny sausages a tiny portion of beans and 1 egg. The hash brown was not homemade but the type you’d get at the supermarket freezer section. The breakfasts here used to be superb but portion sizes have decreased so much and not nicely prepared. The cappachino was lukewarm and the americano served with cold milk. We will not be giving the restaurant any future business unfortunately.

Had Lunch with my friend at the Wicken tree Restaurant in Housing Units 14/11/2023, well if you can call it lunch... We ordered the warm chicken wrap each & 1 side order of chips to share which consisted of about twelve chips. The wrap was really poor in size, 1 wrap cut in half, the chicken was cold, when we spoke to the waitress she said it was because it had salad on it that's why it was cold. The chips had been put on one of the plates with the wrap on rather than on a separate plate/dish.. We also had capaccino drinks which because of the 30 minute wait for food were cold by the time our so called meals arrived... The price was £10.50 for the wraps & £1.95 a portion of chips, extortionate for what we got... Needless to say myself & my friend will never eat there again.

I really wasn't going to put a review on only to see they are still advertising the same menu. You should be ashamed. This is wrong!!

On visiting the store to make some purchases, myself and my Daughter, decided to have some lunch, my Daughter chose soup, which was tomato with vegetables, I chose HOT chicken and bacon wrap, when food arrived soup was Luke warm, HOT chicken wrap was cold, I returned to the counter and explained on menu it says it’s HOT, ok no problem it’s returned to my table HOT. On leaving the restaurant the restaurant Manageress is passing, I thought it might be helpful to give her some feedback, about our experience today, firstly I told her the soup was like some cheap tinned soup that was Luke warm, her response, was that two other people had just told her how lovely it was and she liked it, well that must be ok then.So we moved on to discuss the HOT COLD chicken wrap, I told her it was served COLD, yet on the menu it says it’s served HOT, her response was it will of been HOT, but the lettuce and Cesar sauce will of brought the temperature down to make it cooler, no.it wasn’t cooler, the chicken was like it had had been in the fridge, her response was quite worrying when I think about it, we don’t keep chicken in the fridge. Could you please tell me how you store your chicken prior to serving it in your response. Not a pleasant experience on this occasion and a very condescending response

Pleasant morning shopping in the store and signed up for loyalty card First time visit to the restaurant and looking forward to it, unfortunately downhill after that, Sticky table and waitress cleaned but still not good. Coffee tepid and my wife and I shared the breakfast brunch board, 2 plates and 2 knives and forks. The 2nd plate under the first had never been washed at all and covered in food, similarly a fork was dirty returned to check out desk and items replaced. Returned to table only to find the other fork had baked on food on it, returned to desk and replaced. At no time was an apology offered Food as per coffee was tepid and avocado on toast had a rather unusual flavour. Could have complained about the experience but as I say not once was an apology offered by any staff member and felt any further complaint would have been dismissed Very poor experience as we had heard and read many rave reviews, however a couple on the next table who were regulars said that in the past few weeks they had noticed the standards and the quality had slipped. Happy to say we will be returning to the store but not to the restaurant D T

Ordered 2 Roast Turkey sandwiches Which didn’t arrive so after 45 minutes of waiting we asked for a refund and left. No idea what was going on today, and reading some of the reviews we aren’t the only one’s dissatisfied. The restaurant wasn’t full by any means, the waitresses didn’t know if they were coming or going taking orders to the wrong tables walking around with food looking who’s order it was. Saw other customers returning their food. This is Housing units not a greasy spoon cafe!! I expected more and so do a lot of others. Yet the complaints aren’t being taken seriously. Reading other reviews they get a cut and paste response. I fully expect the same. It could be a really nice, well run restaurant but lots of improvements needed here. Starting with the manager listening to the poor reviews.

Visited here at the weekend and will be the last, we have been here at least 3 times before, and neither visit has been great, one occasion my elderly mother was given brown sauce instead of strawberry jam for her scones in which from the pot was then to ruin her scone, they are very busy and are probably rushing. My husband ordered cheese on toast, and I had a sandwich with supposed large chips to share. The chips arrived, which were tiny in a metal chip basket , so has you know you are not getting a large portion into one of them, so what the small looks like god knows 6 chips I wonder? because there was around 10 when we counted in the large, the chips I have never seen anything more disgusting for a chip they were swimming in grease even dripping onto the plate, they were sent back, what chef / cook would send that out from the kitchen and think that they look nice and the customer would enjoy them?the next lot was only a little bit better not great, by this point we couldn't be bothered, the sandwich and cheese on toast were nice, Along with this my husband had a bottle of lager and I had a processco, it was very expensive for what we had £45 ! For absolutely nothing special. There are much better places to spend our money.

We celebrated my mother in laws 70th in the private dining room. It's exquisite, a really brilliant addition to what was already a great restaurant. We had the afternoon tea and it's lovely. There is a ladies and a gentleman version, this has mini fish and chips and a pork pie, the ladies is more traditional. There is plenty of food, and it's beautifully presented. The service was brilliant, being in a private room, it's easy to be forgotten but we weren't, were offered drinks several times and nothing was too much trouble. My son had the kids afternoon tea but doesn't like ice cream, marshmallows or chocolate milk, the replacements were perfect.

We have attended a family baby shower in the private dining room at the Wickentree today and all I can say is wow. From my initial conversation with one of the managers Daryl to the end of our stay it was absolutely perfect. The staff could not have been more accommodating, nothing was too much trouble and they fulfilled all my requests and more. The food was excellent, service and professionalism first rate, the room is gorgeous and I would highly highly recommend it to anyone who wants to celebrate a special occasion. We pre-ordered our food and it arrived early and everybody commented on how much they enjoyed their food and we covered a wide spectrum with our order, from children's fish and chips, sandwiches and afternoon tea, all were excellent. The management of Housing Units should be proud of what they have created here and the staff in the restaurant, we will return.

We've been eating here for a long time, spending hours in the shop and treating ourselves each time. It has an interesting and varied menu which is a little more expensive than other similar establishments. Their fish and chips used to be to rave over and they still lay claim for their 'famous fish and chips' Unfortunately, they fame is going to be for the wrong reasons as the last one I had was swimming in grease and more thick batter than fish. When I pointed it out to a member of staff she promised to tell the chef......

Visited with my daughter and grandaughters for Champagne Afternoon Tea.Different type sandwiches from last visit. I've got to say I prefer the finger sandwiches,I also felt that there wasn't as much selection in the cakes. Quite small portions from previous visits.

I have been going to Housing Units for so many years now and we normally call in the Café for a Coffee and Cake. However today we decided to go the Restaurant for a change as I wanted something to eat rather than just a piece of cake. We were taken to our seats and given a menu, but nobody advised us that we had to go to the counter and order our own food and pay upfront so after sitting there for awhile we asked one of the waitresses. I am sure this was not the case when I last visited the restaurant and we had a excellent full waitress service were they took our order and then brought our meal to us. I certainly did not have to queue up to give them my order, I felt like I was in a fast food place like McDonalds. I would have expected more from Housing Units and especially with the prices that are being charged for the food.

Called in for lunch as we were in the area. We both had soup and a sandwich. Mushroom soup was delicious and the poached salmon was very tasty. We finished our lunch with a yummy fruit tart and coffee. Staff are always friendly and efficient. Always has a nice feel to the place and this is why it remains a regular stop for us. Thank you.

We have been customers for many years and rate the shop highly. However the restaurant has become more and more expensive even with occasional discount vouchers . The staff try hard and are attentive and friendly. However there can be waits and it’s best to book ahead.Food is attractively presented. However £3:40 for a small cappuccino and £13:75 for basic fish and chips with mushy peas is not good value. The tables need renovation with many being scratched despite the pleasant surrounding decor. Perhaps given the aim to offer a more upmarket environment, table cloths would add a traditional touch.

Visit here approximately every other month as its a half way point to meet friends and family and its always a little overpriced but convenient but this is first time had afternoon tea and definitely the last. Its often busy and can imagine this is demanding being on your feet all the time and this might be why the older staff appear to struggle not least to smile. The pot of tea was nice and hot and we were offered a fresh pot promptly when it ran out however the food was not good. The mini quiche was mini in the extreme about the size of a 50 pence piece if that and it was also cold and didnt taste fresh. The scones were dire like cheapest pre packed scones from a supermarket (even most garden centre cafes these days has fab scones baked daily) The dessert of the day was a little glass of what tasted like just a second pot of the cream provided to accompany the scones. The cream cheese sandwiches were the blandest thing I have ever tasted. The bread was dry at the very edges but cold in the middle (Frozen?) there were 2 and each was the size of a little slice cut from a Cadbury Mini Roll but the worse thing was the lack of flavour in both bread and filling the cream cheese tasted of nothing at all. Terrible. The victoria sponge was ok. Terrible value for money and probably the worst afternoon tea have ever had. Disappointing.

Amazing place, will be so sad to see it go in a few weeks. Love the food, staff are fantastic, and every time I have been they have been supportive, helpful and fully experienced. Considering some are volunteering, they are an amazing team. The food has always been way above average. Will miss this place.

Really enjoy coming to the boat and horses for a carvery on a Sunday, plenty of fresh veg to choose from, Lovley mash potatoes and roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese is also nice. Yorkshire puddings can be a hit and miss, sometimes you get a perfect Yorkshire, other times it can be a flat Yorkshire to a stale Yorkshire that’s been sat under a carvery deck light all day. Just depends what times you go and how busy they have been. Also different options of gravy. The breakfast is fantastic also at the boat and horses. Been so many times for breakfast on a Saturday morning. I like the selection of the hot breakfast. Includes all the usual inc black pudding, mushrooms and if you prefer a porch egg to a fried egg then just ask the waiter and the chef will do you 1. Service wise, the staff could be more interactive with their customers. I have walked in when it’s been really busy stood at the waiting station for 10 mins whilst staff have a chat when the customer should come 1st. Overall it’s better than toby carvery by a long shot and the price what you pay certainly can’t be moaned at
