Whittington's Tea Barge in Reading

Really sweet little place that felt very homely and cute. The family that runs this cafe really cares about their customers, and it was nice to take a break from all the chains and large corporations of London and see something different with a bit of personality and genuine kindness. Excellent prices for what you get, teapots, teacups, etc are very traditional and pretty, a worthwhile experience. We're glad we found this little gem and will go again if we're in reading. Book in advance as it filled up quickly!

We booked a private hire of the barge for my dads 60th birthday. It was wonderful and couldn’t recommend enough! There was 9 of us and we were served a ‘high tea’ with delicious homemade cake and scones, tea and coffee and a selection of sandwiches which they did vegetarian for us. And sang happy birthday to my dad! Plus our dogs were allowed on the boat too Amazing and friendly service such a great team. Was so lovely to cruise down the river, can’t wait to go back again soon!

It's a lovely location, nicely furnished and quite roomy inside. The owners are very pleasant. It's a really interesting and different experience. Quite popular though so perhaps book. This was lovely. Delicious food. Delightful service. Charming setting. We've been before for more traditional fayre, afternoon and cream teas. Today we tried the Friday menu and we weren't disappointed. We both had the beef satay rice noodles which were yummy and very filling. Will definitely be going again.

A tasty afternoon tea in lovely surroundings, with amazingly helpful and accommodating staff. The food was freshly prepared, and plentiful. There was plenty of space and it was comfortable. The staff couldn’t have been nicer. Once we had enjoyed our afternoon tea we even took our Prosecco to the roof of the boat to enjoy the scenery, as we travelled along the Thames. It was a absolutely amazing day and I can’t wait to go back!

An excellent leisurely Vintage Afternoon Tea cruise on the Thames. The owners gave us a warm welcome and were very hospital and friendly with plenty of food and drink. Highly recommended. We will return next summer for another cruise. Thankyou for a lovely day, Whittington's.

What an utter delight! My connecting train was cancelled so I decided to walk from the station to the river Thames at Reading. There I found the most wonderful Whittington's Tea Barge. I had the most delicious lemon cake and proper tea in a china pot sitting inside the barge overlooking the river. The staff were so kind and lovely to me, they were all absolutely delightful. I will always be grateful for that cancelled train as I found this very special place as a result. Such a gift thank you!

We wanted to send a birthday gift to our sister in law during lockdown, having visited here in the past we contacted them only to find that the birthday did not fall on one of the days that they set aside for delivery. Once I explained it was for a birthday they were happy to be accommodate our request and delivered such a beautiful basket containing a cream tea selection. The recipient was so delighted she said it made her day. Blown away by the service, showing local really is best.

Loved this charming place. Visited yesterday for a late lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it, the moment you sit down it’s just a really nice comfortable place to be with a great atmosphere. The barge is run by a very warm and friendly team and we would definitely visit again if In the area.

I ordered one of the cream tea hampers to have at home and would highly recommend! The hamper looked great - a basket with scones & cakes arranged inside. It would make a perfect gift, especially in lockdown. The scones were very fresh & there was a good amount of cream and jam too. All very tasty! You also get two clipper tea bags. I ordered through Facebook, not sure if there may be other ways to order too. Would definitely order again.

I visited today for the first time since Covid, with my partner and her parents and we each had a Vintage Afternoon Tea. The guys have reduced the table numbers to socially distance but managed to maintain a great atmosphere still. Service was quick and the food was excellent with a great choice of sandwiches, scones, cake and tea. Great to go back and a brilliant afternoon spent on the river!

Lesley and Naomi (and Bobby) were the most welcoming hosts, the food was delicious (especially the gooey brownies!), fantastic entertainment - Naomi has the most incredible voice! I love Whittington's tea barge. The food is always tasty, the setting picturesque and the service is friendly.On this occasion my partner, my mum and dad, and I had brunch. My cheese omlette was delicious and the blackberries for my dad's granola were freshly picked from the nearby bush. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks while watching the swans on the river.

Rellenos de sandwich eran encantadores, no el estándar. Los bollos eran exuberantes y los pasteles eran igual de buenos. I took my parents to the tea barge as part of a series of treats for my mums birthday. It was a lovely find and a bit different to the usual afternoon tea venue. My parents are in their late 70s and the wonderful music from the 50s really started the session off in a nostalgic way. The food was amazing (the selection is not huge but that is to be expected from a small kitchen on a boat!).I had the omelette and my parents both had toasties. All meals were really delicious. The tea was topped up as we needed and the latte and wine were also very nice. We had such a lovely time that, despite being full, we decided to order the scones in order to be able to stay a little longer. Lesley and her family were so accommodating - my mother thoroughly enjoyed her chats about their native Wales - that we will definitely return to this little gem!

It is quite an experience having a full English on a barge boat! The owners re friendly and welcoming and cake is out of this world!

Had a very pleasant afternoon tea with nicely prepared sandwiches, tasty fruit scones, delicious strawberry jam and clotted cream, not to mention loose leaf tea in proper fine China tea cups. The hosts Andrew and Lesley are very friendly and help make the whole experience a delight. Very much looking forward to the curry, cake and musical comedy evening in December which we have already booked.

Came to us a 70th birthday gift my mum was given. Lovely tea, fantastic range of sandwiches and cakes and beautiful homemade scones. Lovely atmosphere great to see everyone chatting and engaging with each other rather than staring at screens. Loved the mismatched China.

Hired for private Vintage high tea cruise up the Thames. Was the absolute perfect venue for a hen do. Plenty of sandwiches (Lesley made some extra of the popular salmon sandwich!), delicious scones (with ample cream and jam), plus several choices of cake (victoria sandwich, coffee & walnut, red velvet, toffee cake, fruitcake....).
