Not nice whatsoever,very ignorant and rude staff,cod and chips way over priced and cooked dry,most likely recooked from the night before..I ended up giving it to the seagulls in the back garden.

The best Fish & Chips we’ve enjoyed for years. The only criticism is its Cash only which by today’s standards is rather dated. Granted you can pop across the road to a Cash machine.

Fantastic food, you won’t go hungry here.

Good white cod, chips and a wally. Portion size is good.

Tonight the Cod was succulent & tender, the batter was amazing and no grease, chips are always so perfect. The portion size was generous for a standard size. I would say that I Never leave reviews, but I have to say "This was the BEST Fish & chips I've ever eaten in my life" !!!!

Orders a large portion of chips and the size i got was far from. Had to feed 3 people from this. Had a few issue but let them slide. Enough is enough now.

A huge generous portion of cod ( large), standard chips. Delicious very fresh white chunks of fresh cod ( not frozen). The chips were crisp not soggy. Overall a very satisfying meal. Friendly staff and good value at £10.80. Cash not card . Its cash in Chard. A very substantial serving enough for two " average- size " folk maybe, I just managed to finish it, but I am a big eater!

The fish is provided in very substantial portions and cooked fresh to order. The oil used for frying is also fresh as he fish and chips have a lovely golden colour not dark like some other non- English run places that recycle their dirty cooking oil ( enough said on that issue!(. Friendly lasses serving. Good value. The cod was perfectly flakey and chunky and beautifully white and fresh. The chips were crisp and yet soft on the inside. I just managed to finish the large cod and chips but it would , in my opinion suffice as fayre for two persons. This is the only place I'll go for fish and chips within 10 + miles of Chard, where I stay . Keep up the great traditional English cuisine. Great to support a local business too.

We are from out of town and are staying locally. We fancied some fish and chips as we didn’t fancy cooking on our last evening in beautiful Somerset! Whites was easy to find and I found parking just outside. The staff were and absolute delight and the food was very tasty. The chips were fluffy in the middle and had a crunch to them on the outside, the veggie burgers were apparently the best (from a 7 year old & her mother). The battered sausage and steak and kidney pie were fresh and full of flavour and the curry sauce was amazing! None of it was greasy and it was all cooked freshly - I couldn’t recommend this place enough! We are gutted that we found it on our last evening here… but we will be back 😀!!

Best chip shop in Chard and they take credit card payment, unlike the oriental chip shop nearer to my house.

Go to be honest, this place has served us some reasonable food in the past. How’s er recently the pea fritters have been appalling, not even possible to pick them up they’re just mush, however what’s worse is that the staff are so rude and so miserable that I can’t wait until there’s another chip shop locally to use.

Whilst visiting family we purchased 2 fish and chips and children's meal and pie. This was the best fish and chips we gave have dad in years. The batter was perfectly cooked and the fish was lovely. Customer Service was excellent and even though it was busy they seemed to have enough staff behind the counter so orders were still hot when we left.

Upside is much of the food is cooked to order. Downside is there can be a wait. Portion size is good (too many chips!).

Really friendly people, and really fast service. The chips were nice and portions were huge, however the batter for the fish was very oily which seeped out as a liquid and was all I could taste when eating… this spoiled the meal unfortunately.

Slimy fish, greasy soggy batter. Got home and a portion of chips were missing, that we’d paid for! Definitely not going back here. And the miserable staff was enough to put you off just by walking in.

We ordered from you guys tonight. We normally have great food from you, but after this evening we won’t be back. We ordered salt and pepper chips.. which did not come looking like what i thought they would after seeing a photo online of your salt and pepper chips.. hence why i ordered them, i couldn’t even eat them they had that much seasoning and salt on, absolutely disgusting and the sausage looked like it had been cooked for 1,000 years. waste of money. i would also like to add that there’s a lady behind the counter who is so rude, we’ve noticed this every time we have come and ordered from you. a little kindness doesn’t go far.

One of the best fish and chips shops around

One of the best fish and chips in Chard, the fish is tasty and succulent also the portions are quite big although usually quite greasy. The service is average, unfortunately they only take cash and closing time is too early.

Fish was watery and quite tasteless suggesting it had been cooked from frozen and the chips were very average.

My first visit. By far the best fish & chips for miles and better than the one I frequent occasionally in Taunton. Very fresh cod - the chunks of white fish are full of flavour unlike the frozen fish that crops up elsewhere. Generous portions. The chips were chunky and had a good texture. Overall a filling meal. The batter was light and not at all oily. Friendly folk. I shall be back again soon.

Great food, we always call ahead as there is usually 6 of us and qas told how long it would take. We go there at the time and the food was ready to pick up.

Fantastic little chip shop. Was delivering local (Steel Hgv 1 Driver) and Googled good places to eat. This place came well recommended, so decided to try it. Had a nice conversation with the staff while I waited. I was not disappointed. Fish was cooked fresh to order, and chips were nice, hot, and crispy. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Will defo be back next time I'm in the area. Nice to support local small business like these. They are the bearing heart of communities. A++

Just spent £26 for inedible cold food. 3 half lots 1 chips 2 buns and 2 curry’s. Only thing fit for consumption was the bread and curry. Gave all the crappy fish to the dogs and all the chips went straight in the bin. What a complete waste of money

We normally love going to Whites but chips weren't that best and quality of food wasn't the same. Staff seem friendly.

After hearing slightly disappointing word of mouth reviews about this chippy, being able to try it made me realise it is so, so much better than I've been told. Fresh, hot chips, beautifully delicate cod. Always a treat and pretty cheap considering price rises over the years. Brilliant stuff.

I've been avoiding Whites as previously food has been very disappointing. Sadly nothing changed. I ordered fish and chips to go, by the time I got home, only 2 minute walk, the fish was so oily that the batter was completely stuck to the paper and the oil was running out of the bag, the fish also was very rubbery and tasted old and stale. the chips were also very oily, and looked and tasted like yesterdays refried, they had no flavour or substance. I shall be avoiding Whites for the foreseeable future.

Friday evening, not too late, visit on the 3rd of June. Picked up Fish and Chips, twice, and mushy peas. The chips were delicious, the fish was delicious, the batter was very soft and quite greasy. The peas were not so much mushy as pureed. It didn't stop us eating it all and the level of retained oil in the batter wasn't as bad as some recent reviews would have you believe. Enjoyable but not the best they could be.

After reading good reviews thought we'd give it a try as we were down here on holiday! Chips were OK but the fish was awful, it was like rubber and I could barely cut it. Looked as though it had been cooked a few times!!

we recently decided to try the fish in “whites” seeing that they had the best chips around, ( i travel to go to whites as not local) how disappointed was i, the fish was a dripping greasy mess!! i have never in my life had fish like that, the batter was pure soggy and literally grease was dripping out. how can they produce fish like that? oil not hot enough or is the fish part cooked so as soon as the batter goes straight back into the fryer it obsorbs all the oil around it. its such a shame seeing as the chips are so nice that the fish is a complete let down. sort it out!!

i live in axminster but travel to chard to visit this chip shop, its by far the best around and lovely friendly staff.

We are on holiday & after a Google search & reading reviews decided to visit this chippy. Yes there was a queue but it was so worth worth it. The chips were crispy not the usual. Soggy & the cod was delicious Just wish that we had a Whites in London Would recommend this place if your in Chard

cod and chips twice, could have done a oil change in my car with what was left over. itwasall stuck to the paper when we got home, just a greasy mess.

The quality at Whites us always 100% top notch. Please open up a Whites in London. But until then I'll keep coming to Chard for the best Fish and Chips I've ever hard and believe me, I've eaten a lot of fish and chips :)

After reading the reviews on Google for this chip shop I have to say how disappointed I was with my visit on Tuesday lunchtime. Firstly i arrived to find that the restaurant was closed, I didn't like the look of the battered items that were in the hot plate, so I decided on just a portion of chips, I got served by a stern lady who asked if I wanted salt & vinegar on the chips & she then wrapped them straight up when I distinctly asked for open, they felt no weight at all when she gave them to me, and when I found somewhere to sit & unwrap them, they were mainly hard scalping bits with a couple of small chips thrown in & had virtually no warmth to them, almost cold & very disappointing!!

A Friday night treat was required tonight and boy did we win with Whites. We have eaten takeaway from here for years and in my opinion, having tried most I have to say they are one of the best in the area not just Chard. It's not just the food which is proper, traditional fish and chips using super fresh fish and cooked to perfection but also score high because of the whole experience. The staff are so friendly, welcoming and fun to engage with thst you feel special and appreciated as a customer. Tonight we had our usual cod and chips which was perfect but also tried their new secret recipe 'Whites special salt n pepper seasoning' on our chips. My god, it was a revelation of taste and clearly not just salt n pepper. YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS! Also a new dish (see other non cod n chips photo) normally a lunchtime special but I'm sure if you mention this review you can have it in the evening 🤣. Small cod n chips but with toppings of new special seasoning, spring onions, crispy onions and a drizzle of mayo...... LUSH! Well done Whites, best fish n chips that me n the missus have had out for months including a do called award winning one in Seaton! Thanks!

Whites fish and chip shop is the best in Chard the chips are lovely and the sausages are really nice especially batterd and the fish is nice as well so if you are in Chard try this chip shop out you will not be disappointed how good they're food is.

Wow this place is a real find - great fish and chips at very reasonable price and topped off with really friendly service. Please, please open up a branch of Whites in London :)

The big problem with this chippy is the quality of its output is not consistent. We use it weekly, same day each week and one week its really good, hot food, crunchy chips and a really nice fish, but the following week, the food is luke warm, the chips are an oil soaked soggy mess, the fish is average at best and the curry pot is half empty. It reminds me of Man United, i.e. needs work! Its not cheap either, prices have risen significantly over the past two years and we can get a Chinese for the same price as fish and chips which was never the case in years gone by.

We have been here quite a few times and have enjoyed but the last few times have got worse leading up to yesterday.The chips were terrible like they had used old ones and laid heavy in your digestive area The fish was dry the whole meal looked and tasted old. I just could not eat it sad to say I don’t think I will be back for a while until they get there act together and sell fresh cooked food maybe changing the oil would help as well.

Ordered large cod do freshly cooked whilst I waited. Lovely fluffy fish and crispy batter not greasy and nice cooked chips not soft and squidgy. Not the cheapest in town but nice quality and reasonable portions.

We have just had fish and chips and they were cooked really nice, lovely batter on the fish, chips cooked perfectly nice colour, all lovely and hot still when I got home, I think whatever they are doing they are doing right, including the oil.

Having seen good reviews I decided to try Whites for fish and chips. I had hoped to sit down to eat but at 19.00 this was not available. I ordered a large haddock and chips. I would have preferred a normal size haddock but there was not this option and the price of £7.50 was a bit steep. After a short wait for the fish to cook I was presented with the chips and the fish wrapped in two separate parcels. Now this gave me a problem because I intended to eat them whilst walking around the town and I don’t have three hands. Anyway they tipped the chips into a cardboard container and put the fish on top to make it edible on the go. The fish was of good quality, well cooked and with no skin or bones but the batter was not to my taste – 8/10. The chips were copious and, although there were some red hot ones, most of them were cold. Why do chip shops mix fresh chips with stale ones? Cold chips do nothing for me so only 3/10. Any chip shop worth its salt would make sure that its chips were fresh and hot. I will not return.

I have traveled the world far and wide, across America, Canada and Britain and I have never in my 25 years as a chef and restaurateur found a better fish and chip shop than this place. It is truely a little box of gold., Yes Golden brown and flaky fluffy fish and here is a shocker it tasted like fish. The portions were great and then the biggest shocker to top it off the staff wanted to serve us with a smile and they even cared enough to ask us how the food was and did we enjoy our meals.If I could have I would have given this place 10 stars They are happy well trained and like what they are doing and it shows,,,, GREAT JOB.I don't care how far i have to travel when my friends and family come from Canada or America and want traditional fish and chips I will be bringing them to Whites One bad thing I can say is they need a debit card reader machine

Cooked in Veg oil and not cheap - in Yorkshire Fish and Chips are only about £3.60 in a lot of areas, but prices seem comparable to other establishments in Somerset. As per the title, the best Fish and Chips I've had in the South, but if White's started cooking in dripping and wrapping in newspaper I would probably live there!

Whilst I realise that not everyone’s taste is the same, this fish and chip shop serves the perfect chips, slightly chewy on the outside and fluffy and full of flavour inside.

Nice quality chip shop all cooked to order and well worth enjoying if you are in Chard. The size of the chips portion is a bit smaller than normal but that's good for your waistline isn't it!!

We visited Whites for takeaway whilst staying in Chard. We placed our order for 2 Saveloys with 2 portions of cheesy chips plus a deep fried Mars Bar that my fiancé had enjoyed on previous breaks down here. Everything in our order was cooked fresh so we did have to wait however we’d prefer this to having food that’s been sitting out for a while already. By the time we got back to our lodge the food was still piping hot, the chips are tasty and they had a very generous helping of cheese, they couldn’t say if it was local cheese or not but it tasted good anyway. The saveloys were nice and still warm so we didn’t need to reheat them which we’ve had to do with some places before. As he likes to eat the Mars Bar whilst it’s still hot my fiancé started with this before his chips and said it was still as good as he remembered. With the Mars Bar Spring Rolls he enjoys from a local pub in Chard it’s a tough choice for him to pick his favourite but he hasn’t come across either anywhere else we’ve been on our travels so they’re his guilty treat whenever we’re in Somerset! Overall the food from Whites is good and good value for money so we would definitely return when we next visit Chard. The only thing that could improve our visit was if they took card payments as we had to run to the cash point first as we didn’t know it was cash only until we arrived.

Hadnt been for a long time but passed the other day and decided to call in. Great portions, freshly cooked, nice thick white fish, and a crunchy batter. All you can ask for in a great fish and chip shop.

Best fish & chip shop in chard! Fish is always cooked to order so although you will have to wait for it you know know it is freshly cooked! Reasonable prices. There is also an 'eat in' option for an additional 50p

Been here a few times since moving to the local area. Usually very friendly and chatty however I visited on the 18th October and looks like they may have changed hands.

Whites offers an eat in facility until 9.00pm we looked in around 8.15pm and had excellent cod & chips with a large mug of tea cooked to order which was excellent quality and good size portions at a very reasonable price - recommend

At 7:10pm we arrived at WHITES FISH AND CHIP SHOP! My son and daughter went in to the chip shop. 20mins and £14.80 later they came back out with our order, which was 3 large chips, 4 small battered sausages and 2 jumbo battered sausages....

Pescado excelente cada vez que voy allí. Mi hija me dice las salchichas maltratada son las mejores que nunca. El bateador es ligero y crujiente cada vez. Incluso tiene una pequeña zona de estar y muy popular. El personal siempre fue muy amable y saluda a los clientes con una sonrisa.

I have been a customer of theirs for years and never been disappointed but last week took the children in for a school holiday treat. We dined in and were really happy with our visit. I had a fab coffee and the food was as great as always. What sets this place a part is the friendly service with a smile- I left feeling refreshed and uplifted by the whole experience. I've never reviewed anything but I felt compelled to find them on here it's the least we can do for great quality service and value. Thank you Whites!

After 13 years only recently found this fish and chip shop. It serves the best fish and chips in the area. Spotlessly clean, excellent service, superb food.

Having a busy day I decided to nip into whites for something to eat. I asked for a portion of chips to take out.Once home my son and myself were disappointed the chips had been reheated they looked shrivelled and very inedible.Considering this was a lunchtime I don't understand why they weren't fresh? So on that note a vote of nil and no return.

Very busy Friday evening so no waitress service. However we were able to sit in and eat our enormous portions of fish and chips. We were provided with cutlery, tartar sauce and even extra chips! The fish was fresh and cooked to order perfectly with a light crisp batter. Thank you - we have no hesitation in highly recommending!

In search of a great fish & chip shop after a day trip to Lyme Regis, we spotted this little gem on TripAdvisor.The shop is clean and has a small sit down area which you can pay a supplement to eat inside for additional 50p I think it was. We opted for take out! After being served our take out cod & chips by a smiley helpful lady, we devoured the lot at home ..Im fussy about my Great British Fish & Chips ..Top marks .Delicious! We'll be back !
