White Lion Royal Hotel in Gwynedd

Just had a wonderful 2 night . The hotel was clean warm and the staff very friendly, breakfast was good and kept us going all day, the bar was very welcoming and drinks are reasonably priced.

Good food, great atmosphere, friendly staff. The manager, Barry, is always friendly and accommodating.

Looking for a dog-friendly place to eat or stay? This is the best we’ve ever seen! Parking is at the back. The White Lion, Bala has a Welcome bag of goodies for each canine visitor, plus a variety of treats and water bowls always available. The staff MUST have been chosen for their love of dogs, because every one of them interacted enthusiastically. We did not meet the Head Chef, but experienced her work at the Carvery on Sunday. I had the vegetarian option instead of a meat, which was a lovely, crusty pie with chickpeas and vegetables in a yummy gravy. For me, though, the absolute topper was the Cauliflower Cheese - best I’ve ever had. Jordan was the chef for our breakfast: ‘small’ Full English was almost more than I could eat, but everything just right. Danny, front of house AND chef, was chatty, informative and helpful. Lenka, in the dining room, truly went above and beyond looking after us. Her wonderful care made our family get-together a very special occasion. The rooms are modern, up to a point: very comfortable and well appointed, but individually, some are a bit quirky - in a good way. It is apparent when you walk in the door that this hotel has been there a long time, and there are plenty of nooks and crannies for a quiet chat. We were very comfortable. Looking for Welsh souvenirs? Awen Meirion, just down the street (ask for directions) has lots of dragons and cards and seriously cool stuff.

On a trip to wales we thought we’d find somewhere nice to eat locally to where we was staying. After reading the menu on the website we decided to go here. All il say is the menu on the website is completely different to what’s in the hotel. A tiny light bites menu plus a specials board. I ordered a chicken curry which according to the website should have been extra chips or naan bread for £1.50 extra. After looking at the receipt we was charged full price for these. When the meal came out I had the chips but no naan bread as they didn’t have any left, but we wasn’t told this until I’d finished the curry. The curry itself was tasty but a really small portion and not worth the £13.50. All il say is it seems the bar staff and the kitchen don’t talk, or the chef just doesn’t listen to what’s actually been ordered at the bar. I won’t be visiting again that’s for sure.

Would not recommend! The menu online looked lovely for our friends birthday so we were looking forward to it. Only to be very disappointed- 0/4 meals correct! I ordered a chicken and bacon Caesar salad with the dressing on the side. Out it came swimming in dressing- you couldn’t even see the lettuce! I apologised and sent it back. After working in hospitality I have never complained! Well then out came a mixed leaf salad with some chicken. No bacon, no iceberg lettuce, no Parmesan, no croutons, no dressing. I complained to the male waiter with a pony tail- who had the customer service of a dead fish- who took it away and brought back the EXACT same dish (with the picked out onion on the side of the plate) and said the dressing won’t be a minute. Good job co-op was just over the road. I ordered and paid for a naan bread to go with my partners curry- it never arrived. My friend ordered chilli- no sour cream or tortilla chips made an appearance. And our other friend was missing the mango chutney. A portion of chips was ordered as an extra- they got 10 chips- we asked for more to which the very rude waiter said he would bring out but they never appeared! Overall a very disappointing meal- the only positive was the very apologetic barmaid (lady with dreadlocks) who had great customer service!

Lovely food and very friendly staff- it’s definitely the place to stay when visiting in and around beautiful Bala. Not a pleasant lunchtime experience. Dirty tables & chairs outside. Soap dispenser in ladies empty. Standard of food very poor - extremely disappointed as looked nice from outside.

Came here with my wife to meet our son who was on holiday in Snowdonia. Looking around , spotted the white lion hotel. There was a car park at the rear which was a blessing as Bala is a town with one road through (if your not a local) The food we ordered was presented to us within 10 minutes of ordering. Perfect. Will come here again.

This is the fourth time we have visited the white lion for food on our way home from south wales and the service and food has always been fantastic, however tonight what we witnessed was appalling, we came up to order at 7.30 only to be told by the manager that the kitchen wouldn’t be taking orders for 20 minutes as the kitchen had been extremely busy and the staff needed to clean down and replenish, this was fine with us as lovely to hear that the staff make the effort to ensure the kitchen is clean and restocked to give customers the best experience, however as we were waiting to order at 7.50pm a very angry chef appeared behind the bar and shouted at the manager saying, I fxxxing said we didn’t have steak kebabs, her reply was nobody told us, he then said fxxxing sort it and stormed off, she looked extremely embarrassed and the bar man said he would go to the table to sort it as he had taken the order, I then overheard her asking the waiting on staff why they hadn’t informed the bar about there being no steak kebabs and they both said he didn’t tell us either, clearly it was the chefs mistake and he was just passing blame in a bullying manner, we felt really uncomfortable ordering food after this so just left, I doubt we will visit again and it’s a shame as it was always our pit stop on the way home, in future we will go to the red pub on the high street as the service and food were brilliant there this evening

Nice old pub, dog frienly, drinks seemed reasonable, called for drinks on two occasions second time for evening meal also. We ordered chicken hanging kebabs which was fine with 4 chunks of chicken on each skewer (2 skewers per meal) and flat iron steak kebab which was terrible, the steak was 4 tiny pieces of over cooked meat per kebab very disappointing as it was not cheap at £16.95 each

Had lunch great food at a good price. Fish n chips was excellent and my lady had lasagne which she said was also very good. Couldn't fault the meal.

We stayed in Bala for one night and had an evening meal and breakfast. The room was lovely. Very clean, comfortable and spacious with well stocked tea/coffee etc. The menu is very basic pub food. The classic burger was not particularly nice and scampi and chips very bland. There seemed to be a problem and staff were very unhappy. No manager on duty and the lass had to step up as acting manager, although doing a good job, was clearly unhappy. It also seemed that a member of staff had walked out. I have to say that the staff all did an amazing job and were helpful, friendly and efficient even though they obviously had difficulties. On ordering poached eggs at breakfast, the waitress told us chef was refusing to cook poached eggs and she didn’t know why but would check if he would do them. At one point she came out with a meal no one had ordered - unhappily saying ‘this is what I was told’. We heard a loud ‘get out!’ from the kitchen while we were eating and it seemed the place was turning into Fawlty Towers. I got my poached eggs but they had obviously been poached in water with too much vinegar and were not very nice. Will give the hotel a wide berth in future.

Awful experience. Very rude bartender, they were out of grilled chicken but substituting it for buttermilk chicken so when we went to order a chicken ceaser salad and were told no by the guy behind the bar my father told him we could with buttermilk chicken as thats what the waitress told us. The bartender was told by a waitress to check with the kitchen and he rolled his eyes at us and sighed like we had just asked for blood. He came back and said no and did not say why. When the food arrived the "hanging kebab" was not hanging as described, just some very chewy meat with a rock hard kebab bread on the side, terrible presentation, it looked like roadkill. The curry looked like dog food and did not taste much better. We did not eat it and left most of the kebab. When a waitress asked how things were my father told her about the meat and she said she would tell someone then never came back. £80 for 2 chewy tasteless kebabs, 1 inedible curry and 1 passable mac and cheese and 4 drinks. Never again

Met friends here for drinks, lunch and a long overdue catch up. Had a lovely time and all staff were helpful and attentive. Food was also delicious. Was great to chat to Barry who has now taken over the hotel and has exciting plans in store! Very friendly and engaging guy and we’ll be popping back for the Sunday carvery tomorrow. Will definitely be back!

Credit where credit is due, sat out the front with a pint or two before deciding to look at the menu. Decided to order food and went with The White Lion Burger, my dad had the same and my mum ordered the Southern Fried Chicken. Food came out piping hot and plenty of it too. Food was absolutely delicious, everything was cooked to perfection, the salad on the burger was fresh and crunchy, could not fault the food at all. Even with a busy Saturday evening, the food didn’t take too long to come out. Only one suggestion is the plates for the burgers could be a bit bigger, as everything was sliding off the plate, but overall, superb. Oh and the draught options are brilliant! Being local, we will definitely visit more often. Da iawn pawb!

The hotel is good. The room was large, the staff was professional and efficient, the interior of the structure was well kept. If this place was just a restaurant, it would earn only one star. First of all, we reserved the breakfast for 10 pounds, but I don't see how it could be convenient, as the price of any choice is below 10 pounds. The food was nothing special, but not too bad. Dinner though was extremely disappointing. The food looked like a pre cooked meal from some grocery shop, sold for 3 times its price. A giant breadloaf called Bread of Heaven with cheese and onions of average Tesco quality costed 10 pounds. Not sure what concept of heaven it should deliver. Well, nice place for sleeping, but terrible for eating.

Very disappointed with our stay here, especially given the high price tag. The room was not at all clean- black seal around a dirty bath, sticky bits and stains around the room which were easily cleaned off by me with a cloth as I felt obliged to reclean room given the current situation. Furnishings are tired, stained and tatty in a way that makes them impossible to be pleasant or clean.Food was microwaved and of poor quality, served hastily without a smile.Street was increasingly noisy into the late hours due to at least 40 young people congregating, shouting, arguing, vomiting, plus a bit of showing off their noisy vehicles. Not the hotel’s fault but still not great.Room was very noisy due to corridor noise and complete lack of sound proofing. Several rooms packed full of people.One saving grace was a very nice front of house person.We will not return.

Went for an evening meal on 16th. Had an amazing experience with barry and his team. Food and service was excellent. Made to feel like part of the family. Vegetarian and vegan food was amazing. Will definitely recommend to anyone.

Had Sunday lunch as a family of 4. Found the app brilliant for track and trace as well as ordering. The staff were brilliant and vet attentive whilst maintaining safety. The gravy on the Sunday lunch was the best I’ve had in ages. Loved the veggies being served separately to help ourselves as well as gravy-perfect! Empty plates (see photo) even from the kids and they are very fussy particularly our youngest but he even ate the vegetables as he could put his own on and not be over faced.

Visiting Bala in our motorhome for a week & had 2 meals here at the white lion Tues & Wed. It is App download for ordering which we think is great.We struggled a little due to phone signal but waiter Peter was fab & helped us out (Thanks Peter). On our second visit we hadn't booked but the manager fitted us in . All the staff were great & food was lovely. A bonus was the eat out to help out discount ( 50% of food & soft drinks) . Went in here for drinks only. Were greeted but had to wait for another member of staff to seat us. We sat in the lobby and were then told we had to download an app to select and pay for the drinks. This was in addition to manually giving our contact details for test and trace. The app was a pain as the table we were sat at did not exist on the app. In all, overly complicated.

I came here in a small group on a Thursday around 2:30. It was very quiet and I was happy with the covid secure measures. Our server Peter was very helpful and checked in on us to see if we had any issues ordering via the app and when my phone wouldn't play along he went and got us some disposable menus. Very friendly service and put me at ease to start having meals out again.

Lovely staff. Food was nice. Could do with a bit more seasoning for our taste but we added our own. Ordered everything on their app. (Great icon btw.) Staff kept checking on us without being intrusive. Covid19 mitigation’s were good if that bothers you. Would definitely come here again!

Went in for some food on a Friday night and unfortunately were very disappointed. We both ordered chilli con carne and some cheesy garlic bread. The garlic bread was hardly cooked and one of the chilli was not hot at all. We could tell it was a microwave meal - how hard is it to get it warm enough? Sent it back and got another one only slightly warmer than the first. Later in the evening we were both ill from the food. Won’t be eating here again.

Had a great meal here with a large family. Food was good, but was exceeded by the service that we received from Peter. He was an absolute joy, attentive to all the tables in the restaurant, and nothing was too much for him. We eat out as a large family regularly, and appreciate it’s not always easy to take care of larger groups, but we agreed that this was some of the best service we have ever had.

Friendly service, good value for money and a wide choice on the menu. Kids menu had a good range and the portions were good. Adults meals were nice. The only disappointment was the sausages and mash. The caramelized onion gravy was normal gravy with slices.of raw red onion added.Drinks were nice, with a good range at the bar.

Just had a 2night stay here, Staff great, Building Quirky old meets new loved it.We stayed on 3rd floor lots of stairs incase you require a lift.As we got to top of Hotel we expected a small double room, but it was a great size room and good sized bathroom.all looked recently decorated to a good standard.Breakfast was good and bar prices good.Just a note to team bathroom would benifit from a light above bathroom sink,Would look forward to staying here again.

My fiance and I booked for the weekend to celebrate her birthday. The reception was friendly, and the room at the top was clean and warm. What more could you ask for.Sadly, after enjoying a couple of drinks in the bar by the fire, we ordered food and it duly arrived. We both had curry, one chicken and one lamb. The lamb ws grey (?) and the chicken was so obviously microwaved, dry, tasteless and awful.We gave the benefit of the doubt and didn't make a fuss, but decided not to eat there again (ever!).Apart from idiots who like to crash about the hotel at 3am, the room was lovely.The final kicker was on Sunday morning, when my fiance went for a shower after me. I had a hot shower, she was dodging icicles. The hot water died, and when I asked the only person I could find to help, she tried her best, but couldnt do much, as she was only the lady serving breakfast. All praise to her, but where were the management?So ups and downs, hence the score of 3. I love Bala, and with some attention to detail and decent food, this place would be an absolute winner

This is a lovely pub. Many small areas or cwtshes to sit in peace and quiet. Lovely sofas to relax on. Nice and warm. Relaxed and child friendly atmosphere . We had a meal there. The food was good. It came very quickly and was nice. It wasn't great but it was nice and ample. The curry was very dry.... We have had the curry twice now. The vegan burger was lovely . Great value for money. Would we return.. Yes definitely.

This place offers vegetarian AND vegan options ! We visited on a week day during our trip, It was a last minute thing we were hungry. I was delighted to see an eggless (vegan option) There was a slight hiccup with the steak we ordered well done, it came pink and then sent it back but it was still pink. But other than that the food was goo , the prices were fair and the place was clean and welcoming. Also thank you to the lady serving! She gave us so great attraction information !

Experienced suspiciously swift delivery of food to our table. Obviously significant reliance on microwaves here I’d say. We had two tasteless chicken curries, a mixed sharing platter that was average at best and a macaroni cheese that didn’t look too clever. On a positive note, nice pint of beer! This experience left us hugely disappointed mainly due to the fact that the venue looks interesting and full of character and history from the outside. Thoughts are dashed when you walk in to the bar/dining area from the rear entrance (where we parked). Would definitely not return for food!

Visited after going to the national white water Centre. Big hotel/pub on main road in Bala. Good pub food. No one there. Big bar. Nice old photos and good music (surprisingly). Great for lunch with the kids.

What a night! Fantastic service, great food, great value, the service was excellent, the girls worked so hard to meet our every need! Barry made sure that we were well looked after and gave all of our party a lovely treat!

Stopped here for Sunday Lunch whilst on holiday. Went in and was fairly busy. Waited at the bar to order. No sign of any staff. After about 5 minutes we finally saw a waiter and asked if anyone available to take our order or at least get served a drink. Waiter said he would be right back after finished serving the next table - never saw him again! Saw 3 members of staff in an alcove behind the bar "playing" with a computer and tried to attract their attention but we were totally ignored. After nearly 10 minutes (surprised we waited that long!) we walked out in disgust,

Its always good to find somewhere your pet dog would be welcome - so in the pub garden or in the bar is ideal at the White Lion - food is served ( for humans) in the garden or the bar area which is roomy and clean , all staff encountered were friendly - drinking bowls for dogs and dog biscuits available :-)

We went here for tea as it seemed to have the best vegan options in the town. It has a lovely welcoming feel when you walk in and staff are friendly. We ordered the vegan burger and vegan vegetable bake. I appreciate this is a chain pub so I was not expecting 5 star food. But I have to say for what we paid both meals were delicious. So well done for having a decent vegan selection which was tasty and excellent value. Moving forward would be great if you could highlight which wines are vegan .

Visit this quirky looking pub for tea with friends, ordered a stake well done to be well done on the outside raw in the middle could not eat it.

Called in at this splendid looking hotel /pub/restaurant for a Sunday Lunch at the Carvery. Their beer was OK, but they couldn't do much to murder RevJames. But they contrived to murder everything else - all three carvery joints on offer were grossly overcooked, the vegetables were huge unappetising chunks warm but not in any way crisp, the peas seemed rock hard as if rehydrate, and the mini Yorkshire were limp and undercooked. The service was terrible because there was none. Quite the most disgusting meal we've had in a very long time. Hence, why bother.

2 adult meals & 2 kids meals on a weekday lunchtime. Paid at bar. Staff came over a few minutes later to advise they had no salad due to delivery being late (This affected 90% of the menu) with no alternatives or discounts being offered. We selected a meal that wasn't salad dependant at a lower value & all meals came out fairly quickly. My wifes meal was ok, mine wasnt great & i had to go to the bar to ask for the difference in price at the end of the meal as it wasn't being offered. Service was friendly enough but lacking in attention. As the co-op is just opposite they could have swiftly solved their salad issue by nipping over for 5 mins. Food average, with better options on the main street available.

After recommend by a friend, we visited with friends for a Sunday carvery, unfortunatly beef uncooked ( rubbery) Vegetables cold and again uncooked. Roasters hard and again cold. We really was disappointed Good point though. Staff pleasant

Ham, egg and chips and fish, chips and peas bought. Chips were luke warm and soggy, ham was out of a packet, peas looked reheated from lunch time and fish batter rock hard. Never ever left food but this was the most disgusting meal ever served.

Relaxing atmosphere, top tunes, friendly staff (thanks for the sweets-even though I earned them ;)) smashing pint, lovely decor. Will be visiting again. Keep up the great work guys :)

Lovely bedroom, very spacious and clean. Food is ok, not hot enough both in the evening and breakfast.

The food and service at the White Lion is excellent. I treat myself and had the steak for my evening meal & it was wonderful. Breakfast was buffet style help yourself and I easily had enough to keep me going all day never needing to bother with lunch.

What a gem in this little town. Beautiful decor & ambience. From the moment we walked in we were made to feel so welcome. A big shout out to Barry the owner who went above & beyond for our visit. You truly made this girl from Oz laugh from the moment we met. Job well done to you & your staff. Till next time

Our room was clean and comfortable enough though not all that spacious. The bathroom was also reasonable but unfortunately the water for baths and showers was only lukewarm. The bar was quite pleasant but we didn’t have dinner here so can’t comment on the food. It seemed to have the usual Pub food. Breakfast was disappointing with a pretty limited hot and cold buffet. Overall this hotel was OK for an overnight stop and it was very good value.

We were looking for somewhere suitable to take the children and this fitted the bill. Ordinary fast food that kids like and we were in and out relatively quickly. For three adults and five children it didn't break the bank
