White Horse Inn in South Lakeland

We stopped in here for an early dinner which was handy given a number of places close between lunch and dinner time. The pie was recommended and it didn’t disappoint. We were too stuffed for dessert but the ones on the table next to us looked lovely.

Forgot it unless you want to go to one of those places where they deliberately talk to like a piece of dirt, yes I’m taking about the obnoxious Scottish bar man whom continually made us feel unwelcome. From moving us from table to table because he’d just wiped them to swearing at one of our friends for asking for a bowl of water for the dog. On our first night we’d been out walking all day & arrived back at the pub at 9.50 at which he proceeded to call last orders so he didn’t have to deal with us, bearing in mind we’re all late 50’s early 60’s here for a walking holiday not a bloody stag party. How the heck this man is still in employment in the hospitality industry is beyond belief. The way he treated us was absolutely disgusting, I wouldn’t even employ him to scrape mud off our boots. One place to definitely avoid.

We've been to this pub for the last 5 years on our annual visit to the lakes. The food is amazing. Every time we've been for food we haven't been disappointed. A good menu selection freshly cooked a good portion sizes. A warm welcome, a good selection of drinks, a seating area outside too to take in the view. Always nice and clean including the toilets!

Cannot recommend this place enough. Went as it had good reviews on trip advisor but wow were we impressed. Friendly fast service and the food was out of this world. Can’t recommend it enough honestly don’t go anywhere else. Fantastic service great staff and a lovely country pub vibe - five stars.

Managed to get a late booking for my wife and myself, it must have been our lucky day. This rural pub and bunkhouse is rustic and inviting place with very helpful and attentive staff, my wife had the chicken supreme which in her words was fantastic and flavoursome I opted for the chalk stream salmon which was cooked to perfection and probably the best I have had for a long time. Bothe meals being served with a selection of seasonal vegetables which, again were really well cooked. The service more than matched the food and served to enhance our evening.

Well just about had the worst experience ever in a restaurant or pub. Went in and the place was empty, approached the bar and was told myself and my wife could sit anywhere, the Scottish barman with a horrendous attitude came over and asked if we were waiting for anyone as we had sat on a table for four. Again place was empty and was told to sit anywhere. He then informed us if that was our big silver car, we had parked in the wrong place. There was nowhere else to park!?!? I’ve never as a customer been spoken at in a manner the way he did. We both agreed then that we were not going to eat there anymore and I paid for the drinks, which were a complete rip off £10 for a wine!!! In a crappy little road side pub!! DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE OR IF YOU OWN THIS PLACE SACK THE BARMAN WITH A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER.

We regularly visit the White Horse Inn. Always feel really welcome as does the dog who gets treats from the staff each time she comes in. The staff are fantastic seen a couple of negative comments about their attitudes on here but from our experience it’s the complete opposite. The steak pie is fantastic. You get a real mix of people in here most who have enjoyed a day on the hills and are finishing off with a cold beer and some food.

The pub is a little tired but the meals are good,the carpark is in a terrible state you after be very careful or you'll end up damaging your car 🚗

Got greeted by a miserable Scottish man with a beard asking rudely, what we wanted when we walked in and accidentally sat down with our dog on a table of 4. He proceeded to tell us with a crap attitude that we sat in the wrong place. He proceeded to have a garbage attitude when we moved and sat at a table for 2. I would sack this guy. We got up and left. Won’t ever eat at this horrendous place.

Unacceptabky Rude Called In to book table for evening birthday meal After waiting for person in front to be served barman went to take cutlery to a table...no apology! Knew I was waiting to be served but stayed talking at table. After several minutes just walked out due to lack of attention. Their loss of revenue to to lack of attention.

Had a lovely meal at White Horse. Hubby said the little pigs was delicious and the lamb Henry was so tender you could cut it with a spoon. Very welcome friendly staff too who greeted us with a smile and our dogs with a treat. Will be back on our next visit to the lakes. Highly recommended.

Stopped off here on our way back from Scotland. A very impromptu and unplanned trip. Legend of a bar man, couldn’t do enough for us. We opted for the bunkhouse instead of the van. Super simple. Warm food, good ale. Will def stop here again without doubt.

Don’t bother. Popped in for a quick drink on the way home from a walk. Asked if we had a table booked and because we didn’t, were told we could not buy a drink and were made to feel very unwelcome. We won’t be going back.

Board outside clearly stated food served till 9. extremely disappointed that when arriving at 8.49 that they had ‘switched everything off’ in the kitchen. Well done for refusing hungry customers with little chance of getting anything anywhere else that night!, Could have had three nights of us eating and drinking as we were next to the pub but principals wouldn’t allow that. not how to run a business😏

Lovely welcome in a cosy warm pub with open fire. The service was excellent, but no words can describe the Steak pie!!! Great taste full of beautifully cooked meat absolutely massive, with nice thick tasty gravy, I think other pubs should look at the quality & presentation of the White Horse. No problem when I requested changing my mash for chips, they and the vegetable selection once again fantastic and hot. The staff are friendly with great customer service. My 2nd visit in 2 months. Highly recommend a vist for great food

We are regulars to The White Horse and always enjoy the ambiance and the food.. all excellent again tonight… The evening was made better by the wonderful service by Stevie, he’s a breath of fresh air with his sunny personality and full on efforts to make sure everyone has a great experience… thanks, see you next time 😀

Saturday night tea out with hubby. Decided to try the White horse as close to where we are stopping. Lovely warm friendly welcome and shown to table.. Drinks ordered Keswick gold ale and lime and soda and menu provided. Hubby had the Rack of lamb special recommended by a fellow diner and I had the Steak and Ale pie. 10/10 for both. Beautifully cooked and tender was the pie. The rack of lamb was pink but super succulent. Fresh veg and potatoes. Other food looked fabulous and only saw empty plates going back to the kitchen. This place also allows dogs and all were very well behaved. Fully recommended a visit. Prices very reasonable for the quality you get.

Always great for food and today’s Sunday lunch was excellent. Unfortunately the attitude of the landlord spoilt things being rude to a family member outside and then obviously putting pressure on staff to hurry us up and clear the room for the next party whose timing should have been later. When you spend over £300 you don’t expect this! Been going for years but things have definitely changed.

We phoned ahead and booked this place having read and heard so many good things about it. We were so glad we did. It is a perfect example of a place that prides itself on really great staff, consistently good food and a well stocked bar. It is cosy and homely inside rather than fancy and was busy for a Thursday night with a variety of people from couples to families to people dining or drinking alone. Dogs welcome too. Like many pubs around here, it’s nice to be able to go for dinner in really casual clothes. We were warmly welcomed by Sam who was brilliant from the minute we walked in. Friendly, a great sense of humour, good local knowledge and really chatty, he showed a real interest in us as a family and told us about some must visit places in the area. Nothing was too much trouble. The other member of staff we thought was fab was Stevie. He’d recently come down to the Lakes from Scotland and living in Scotland ourselves, we had lots to chat about. Great banter and his recommendations on the menu were welcomed as we were struggling to choose what to have. You could tell that both Sam and Stevie really liked working here. They were great with all the diners. The menu itself was exactly as all the other reviews say. A great selection of top notch classic pub food - freshly cooked, tasty and generous portions that we thought represented great value for money. You could go several times in a week whilst on holiday here and still be spoiled for choice. We eventually settled on the Lamb Henry (exceptionally good - the gravy was awesome) Malaysian Chicken Curry (huge portion with everything you’d want by way of sides and garnishes!) and the child’s portion of Mac cheese was a perfect size for our 12 year old (some excellent chunky chips on the side were probably not necessary but they were all eaten!) We had more good chat with Sam and Stevie between courses on everything from our favourite deserts to psychology to places we loved in the Lake District. This super-friendly rather than transactional service is what made this pub really stand out. We were all so full but decided to share an apple pie and custard which was great. Sam had heard our daughter ask if she could steal some of our custard (she doesn’t like pie) and the next thing, he comes over with a little bowl of custard just for her. So thoughtful. At £75 for all our food and several drinks for 3 of us we thought it was great given the quality and quantity. We can see why this place gets consistently good reviews - it is everything you’d want in a country pub and Sam and Stevie really went the extra mile to make it a really memorable evening - our favourite of the holiday so far. We will definitely be back and would give it a 10 out of 10. Highly recommend - you won’t be disappointed. Apologies - We didn’t get to take pics of the food as it was demolished in no time!

We wanted to have dinner in this place - it’s written “everyone welcome” on their sign and on the board near the door. But when we entered and were followed by a member of staff to the bar to wait in the queue, after 10 min we were told “everything is booked” (he asked how many of us - 2(?)). Room was half empty and we had 6 hours to drive which I told to the person at the bar. But I felt so unwelcome that I left and tried to find another place outside at the cold without internet. Ok, even if they didn’t have space (lots of people left right in front of us…), they could have helped. I found a beautiful place not too far away, you can see it on my other reviews. Unpleasant people! And it’s a hotel - this is how they treat people who are coming late and find out they had to book a table for food … Why would you keep the sign outside - everyone is welcome, food is here, if it’s actually not available!

The pub caught our eye whilst exploring the area and decided to go for our dinner. It didn't disappoint. Great, friendly and attentive staff from start to finish, fairly priced food for the quality you receive. It was faultless. If we lived closer we'd be regulars. Highly recommended

5 of us found this restaurant while out for a drive and are glad we did. The staff were extremely welcoming and made sure we had an enjoyable evening. The food was fantastic and choices were difficult to make because of the menu had so many great dishes on it. We would have no hesitation in going back next time we are in the area and would highly recommend it to others.

We were in the Lakes for 4 nights and ate at the White Horse twice. The food was quite simply amazing - restaurant quality and reasonably priced. Portions were generous but not overwhelming. There was not a dish on the menu that we wouldn't want to eat. The 3 Little Pigs was my favourite and I would go back again and again for that dish alone. I also had the Gressingham duck which was just as good. My husband had the steak and ale pie that was just rammed full of steak and also the Lamb Henry on our second visit. Also amazing! I somehow made room for a dessert as well as it had my two favourite words on the menu - raspberry pavlova. Fantastic atmosphere as well and super friendly hosts. The next time we're in the Lakes, we'll be back. Again. And again!

Excellent lunch stop off the A66 Penrith to Keswick, good Beer selection, perfect menu and a generous serve. Steak sandwich was delicious. Food served thru the day so no mad 2.00PM dashing around. Check it out.

Called in here after hiking Blencathra. At first we were just after a nice cold drink after the hike but then we seen the food getting brought out for other customers. So of course couldn't resist as it all looked amazing. They had sandwiches on the lunch special menu. Hot and cold so we opted for two hot sandwiches and they were amazing, very large portions. Absolutely stuffed. Will definitely eat here again if ever in the area.

Very tasty home cooked food and friendly service. Vegan options available; loaded vegan nachos very tasty and steak and ale pie was excellent!

Food was beautiful, best meal we've had for a long time. Even better for those who have dietary restrictions, most of the meals are gf/df or can be altered for it.
