Unwelcoming and rude staff, chips were uncooked and sloppy, fish was fresh but again not cooked great. Really disappointed considering the price it was. Portions are on the small side and just not a great experience.

Went on a groupon, so not expecting too much. The restaurant was dimly lit. It's not very welcoming. Our server was friendly and efficient. Regular fish and chips anywhere else would have been served as a small portion! My chips consisted of more bits than chips. The fish was exceptionally greasy. It left a pool of fat on my plate. The measly slice of bread was the cheapest available, must be sliced specially for them as it was so thin. There are other chip shops in lytham more worthy of my custom. Even on the groupon, it was overpriced.

A first visit using a Groupon Voucher on a Tuesday (late afternoon/early evening) for Haddock, Chips and a choice of one side from: mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce, including bread and butter as well as a hot or cold soft drink. It was quiet when we entered and we were the only ones seated, then another couple arrived and by the time we were finished eating, another 5 people were sitting at tables. From my seat, I could also see the takeaway chip shop counter and there was a steady flow of customers. Vitaly and his wife came to take our orders with a swift, polite and friendly service. The food arrived quickly, freshly cooked and the battered haddock was delicious. Too many chips for me to eat! On the way out, we passed our thanks to them all and spotted the guy behind the range in charge of the fryer. Another smiley, friendly face. Definitely recommended on a cold, dark and slightly drizzly January evening. Give it a try.

Staff were somewhat rude and did only what was required, for example they didn’t come to see if we were ok or ask if we had a good meal when we paid, they were too busy talking to each other. Chips were poor, tasted “odd” almost wax like. The “butter” on the bread was horrible, tasted like margarine. Won’t be going back and will be happy to explore other chippies in the town. I recently visited Whelan’s Fish and Chip Restaurant in Lytham Saint Annes and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I ordered the fish and chips, opting for the haddock, and was impressed with the quality and taste. The batter on the haddock was wonderfully crisp, providing a perfect contrast to the tender and flavorful fish inside. The chips were cooked to perfection—golden, slightly crunchy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. The staff at Whelan’s were exceptionally friendly and attentive, adding to the pleasant dining atmosphere. Their warm hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable. In terms of value, Whelan’s offers a great deal for the quality of food and service provided. It’s clear that they take pride in delivering an excellent fish and chip experience. Overall, Whelan’s Fish and Chip Restaurant is a must-visit for anyone in Lytham Saint Annes. Delicious food, great service, and good value for money make it a standout choice for a classic British meal.

Had lunch here for the second time while on a shopping trip in Lytham, but it was nowhere near as enjoyable an experience as my previous visit a few years ago. The outside tables were occupied when I arrived, so I ate inside. The restaurant has a pleasant blue and grey colour scheme and looked clean, but it was dimly lit. I was shown to a table straight away, but was not given enough time to look at the menu before the waitress was asking for my order. Although service was quick, the staff were not particularly welcoming or friendly. I chose the large breaded scampi with chips and mushy peas, and a pot of tea. The tea was strong and hot, and it stayed hot throughout the meal. The scampi was very good, well cooked and piping hot, as were the mushy peas, but the meal was let down by the chips, which were soggy and lukewarm, and the brown bread which was dry and stale. Not a cheap lunch either, at £14.30. Would not come again.

My wife and I had fish and chips to take out. We sat across the road on a bench ready to enjoy. The chips were average but the fish was uncooked and the batter slimy inside and in edible. I ate the fish but took all the batter back to show the owner and complain nicely. He said sorry it’s because we are so busy today because of the festival. I asked if he would give me some compensation, maybe a pie instead. He said because I had eaten the fish he couldn’t do that , but offered me a sausage. I said I try not to eat crap like that and walked out absolutely disgusted. I certainly wouldn’t return to get bad customer service and expensive food that was inedible. Highly not recommended.

This chippy was highly rated in the past so tried it for my lunch today. Absolutely awful!! Firstly, chap serving on the counter was plainly irritated that I didn’t order the second I stepped through the door. As they didn’t have what I wanted I settled for meat and potato pie and chips. He took my money then put my pie in the tray, not with a scoop, but with his bare hands with which he had just been handling my cash. Anyone who has worked in catering (as I did for decades) knows that is an absolute no no. I should have refused it there and then but I guess his unpleasant attitude put me off. I went up on the promenade to eat my lunch and try and forget what had just happened. The chips were hot as fresh out of the frier, possibly refried as some had no centre. The pastry on the pie was unpleasant to say the least; left a good amount of it. The pie filling was tasteless! Dreadful meal! Will never go there again. If I lived nearer to Lytham I’d go back and complain about the service and the food. Hope this warns others to find a different place to eat and not waste their money; or risk food poisoning.

We live an hour away and have been coming to Wheelans regularly for a couple of years to get a take away and go to the sea front to eat them as a simple little treat to ourselves. We've always enjoyed our food from there as it has, in the past, been high quality, absolutely delicious and worth every penny, but the last 2 times we've been, (last night being one of them), we were very disappointed by the poor quality of the food. The prices have shot up ridiculously but the portion sizes are so much smaller than they used to be, and served in cheap little trays rather than the larger, more rigid trays they had before. We ordered regular size fish and chips and gravy, but on unwrapping the noticeably smaller bundles even at that stage, it looked like we'd ordered the small size portions instead. The chips and the batter were soggy, the fish was small in size, thin and rubbery and we were both left still feeling hungry. The meal was definitely not worth the dear price we paid for inferior quality food and much smaller portions after we'd ordered standard size ones, and sadly, our enjoyable past times of going to Whelans for good food has definitely come to an end.

This chip shop is trading on it's previous good reputation. Sadly prices have gone up and quality has gone down. I paid £9.70 for regular haddock and chips and I have to say it wasn't that good! Chips had lots of black ones and some refries. Fish was greasy and batter soggy, as if it hadn't been fried enough. It seems that takeaway fish & chips is no longer an affordable snack. I know this is Lytham, and they think they can get away with charging top dollar, but I can get similar (if not better) in Blackpool for £5.95. Not like the Whelan's it used to be!

Staff weren’t really friendly which is okay if the food makes up for it, but that was also disappointing as the pie was soggy and raw, the fish was small and the chips were covered in grease and portion size was horrendous. I think for an establishment that’s only job is to provide fish and chips, it’s robbery to take money from people and serve them a low quality, poorly sized product. Won’t be going back

Great location with friendly and professional staff and lovely food (I had the scampi and bakewell tart). Highly recommended!! :)
