As a lover of village pubs, and seeing too many of my local pubs constantly turning over decent land lords because of Punch, I salute anyone who manages to succeed for a length of time with Punch squeezing them to death. I wish Punch & others would just leave good landlords to make a real go of these pubs. Advertising fabricated ‘expected earnings’ under the pretence of being ‘partners’ then turning the screw & expecting landlords to serve more & more low rate microwaved food at high price to us mere mortals. Failing to fix most issues even health & hygiene related so we watch our village boozers disintegrate time and time again. I see the self employed ‘business people’, who believed they were what was described on the tin now realising they work for less than min wage, tired and exhausted and so often broke. The operators are cut off, regularly (I have witnessed) , severely in debt to near bankruptsy & bullied into handing over the keys for another poor soul to meet the same fate whilst another deposit finds it way back to the nest in Burton upon Trent. The model will be scrutinised by cleverer people than I eventually. I hope it’s not too late though for many more of these beautiful pubs and the people foiled by these estate agents. Estate agents pretending to be breweries with phony interests in the communities these pubs serve. Do better Punch.

Not sure where to start really. I would give zero stars across the board if I could. Booked here for a surprise birthday do a good few weeks in advance. Provided a pre order 3 weeks beforehand via e mail, didn't hear anything back. Sent it again, didn't hear anything for a couple more days, then received a very short reply to say they had got it. Received a phone call from the venue 2 days before to check we were having a buffet.... explained I had sent a pre order twice already, and this was just laughed off, with the excuse that he 'hadn't spoken to the chef; he must have it'. Alarm bells should have rung then. Arrived at the venue and was greeted by a friendly member of staff who helped me with balloons etc. It was downhill from there. Got inside to find no music on, and other than our party there were 4 or 5 other people in, just having drinks, which I thought was odd for a Saturday evening. The starters eventually arrived, then after a significant period of time, the mains started arriving. The starters hadn't been cleared away, so we did this ourselves and took them to the bar. The staff just looked at us, no apology or thank you, just stares. Kitchen staff in dirty whites then brought out a couple of meals, but then nothing..... Out of 32 people, 6 had main courses. One by one (literally, one at a time) a few more came out. I repeatedly asked the staff, where the rest of the main courses were as we still had 8 people without food, and those who had received their meals had finished, and had several complaints about the quality of the food. I asked if the food was actually on the pass ready to go, and was told it was 'about to be made' By this point, an hour had passed from the first main course coming out. I was told with a shrug that they had 'just gone off the pre order'. I produced the pre order I had sent, and pointed out that we were still short by 8 meals. The young man then *wrote these meals on his hand* and scurried off to the kitchen By this point people were wanting to leave as the service was horrendous, they had waited an unreasonable amout of time for food, and the bar service was nothing short of useless (the girl behind the bar didn't know what slimline tonic water was for a G&T; then she didn't know how to open a bottle) We had 2 people didn't get a meal at all, one of which we just cancelled as it was a steak and hadn't even been made. Asked for the cake, and was left standing at the bar for over 10 minutes whilst the staff stood looking at the till, explaining they were 'doing something with the bill' 'Waitress' came round to take desert orders, but we weren't filled with confidence when she asked the same people more than once (who had just ordered with her) if they'd 'had chance to decide yet'. The deserts took over half an hour to come There are 2 large dogs above the property, which was lovely, however the huge piles of dog mess in the 'garden' were not Had to fend off complaints from all of the party, as there were no staff available to deal with anything; the 2 young girls behind the bar were left alone to deal with everything; and neither of them appeared to know the job The on shift mananger and chef scarpered to 'another venue' when we queried the bill (that was over £600!!!) We had even been charged for the food that we hadn't been given!! I can't even say the food was worth the wait - extremely poor quality Worth pointing out that we were *the only people* in the place, and the staff avoided us like that plague Don't know what has happened to this place, it used to be lovely, but last night was nothing short of a shambles. Ruined a birthday surprise, and hugely regretting booking here. Won't make the same mistake again, and fortunately neither will anyone who joined us. We had to discuss the bill for around an hour after we questioned why it was so high given that we hadn't received all the food, and when it did come it was largely inedible. Avoid!

Pleasant enough place, quite relaxing, very tatty outside sadly. Popped in for a quick pint and a sandwhich. Paint peeling, weeds, broken windows. Tidy the place up!! Then waited 10 mins to be served at the bar - when it was quiet. The young girl serving didn't even go and ask for help, very frustrating. Ordered two chicken wraps. One was dripping in oil, more red cabbage than chicken in both, and no dressed salad on either. At near £20 this was not value for money. Nice spot is Elswick, just far more care and attention to details, food and customer service needed.

An hour and a half for the monstrosity called mains: Halloumi- Could of been used to brick a window Fish and chips- The fish practically swam of it was that watery. Two Rump Steaks- "Medium Raw"😂😂 good one more like very very well-done. Chicken teaker- As dry as a nun. Scampi- inadequate cold and mush looked like prawn has been piped in batter very poorly. There was plenty of choices of where to sit - outside in front of the pub or a great garden out the back with a teepee to rent out for special events. All the staff were very friendly but a special shout out to the young lad who was on Wednesday nt (15th) credit to the place. All in all a very nice country pub. Seems to have high staff turnover and is always short, usually meaning a wait to be served at the bar. Not much service with a smile here... Disappointing mothers day lunch. We had made a reservation for the three-course fixed menu priced at £30 per person. Upon arrival, we noticed several vacant tables, yet we were seated at an uneven table with two different heights. Surprisingly, the pub lacked table service, requiring us to approach the bar each time we wished to place an order for food or beverages. Furthermore, the provided set menu offered four options for each course, but unfortunately, they had run out of ingredients for two starters, one main course, and two desserts, severely limiting our choices. Given that we were restricted to this fixed menu, we had no alternative but to select from the available options. The service was generally slow, and we had to make inquiries about the status of our dessert. This could not be attributed to their being particularly busy, as numerous tables remained unoccupied, and a staff member was observed using an eight-seater table to sit and polish cutlery while we were attempting to get someone's attention to clear our plates. While the food itself was of good quality, the substandard service and limited menu options significantly diminished the overall experience. Consequently, I will not be returning to or recommending this establishment.

I’m so disappointed to be writing this but our experience was a disaster from start to finish. We had booked well in advance but the table wasn’t ready on arrival, that happens, totally fine but when we go to be seated the waitress says oh they’ve put someone else on your table so then we’re stood in the middle of the restaurant waiting for them to clean another table despite there being plenty made up. We then had to get our own menus and brush the crumbs off the seats. Again, it’s fine, these things happen, but it just never improved. We ordered the food after a long wait at the bar and one hour later they arrived: 2 x chicken tacos, 1 prawn cocktail and pork belly bites The chicken tacos were freezing cold and filled with chillis, I literally picked off a total of 30 from my portion and there was still loads on it. Couldn’t get a drink at the bar after waiting 15 mins either with a burning mouth! The prawn cocktail had a total of 3 baby prawns that my mum said tasted like frozen ones and they apparently should have been king prawns. The pork belly bites had little to no sauce, were rock hard and looked like dog food. They weren’t even eaten - my partners an ex chef and said they’ve clearly been thrown in the fryer to reheat hence the dryness. The service was terrible, and I feel awful for saying that as there was only a young girl working and it wasn’t her fault - she didn’t know what she was doing and seemed to have been thrown in the deep end. When she brought the starters over she didn’t mention what the dishes were, just said ‘ I think these are yours’ and shoved them on the table pushing the glasses etc. she slid the dishes into the wrong places too as she didn’t ask who’s was each dish.. it was very unprofessional and messy. Then 2 mins after she’d brought the starters she starts bringing out the mains? We o pointed out we hadn’t eaten our starters yet and she said what shall I do then do you not want it?? She also cleared the table before everyone was finished eating. I felt awful and didn’t want to complain to her as she was so young but when I mentioned how bad it had been she looked d like she could cry so I left it. She clearly hadn’t been trained appropriately. At this point we decided we didn’t want the mains anymore as for the price being paid, the standard of food and service we’d received didn’t reflect it & it wasn’t worth the risk of being poorly as the mains could’ve likely been sat on the pass for the past 30 mins whilst we ate starters. The lady at the bar understood and cancelled them for us thankfully. Very disappointed that we won’t be returning after this experience, unfortunately also ruined my mums Mother’s Day meal.

It was only a boy at the bar, and when the person was looking " in charge," it came we've expected to show our table .Nothing happened, they where talking they business behind the till, until one of us asked attention. The food was acceptable. Except the Vietnamese king prawns. Tasty but long way to become Kings looking more like shrimps. When we asked the lady in charge, the excuse was: they had the wrong delivery. No apologies, no change in the price. To go or not to go again...that is the question.

Had to wait 15 mins after our booked time for our table, not a huge issue, only to wait so long to order starters we had to literally grab a waiter and force him to take our order. 45 mins later after chasing up our starters, one mushroom starter was stone cold in the middle and the other was so nuked hot the sauce has literally dried up. 1 hour later the mains arrived, two of the same dishes looked completely different with items missing on one because they'd "run out"!. The waiter was consistently apologetic however the manager/owner came over after dessert to "discuss" the issues in the kitchen but had the most belligerent, dismissive attitude and as bounced immediately he wouldn't be apologising! Food was mediocre at best and atrocious in places. Plenty of other options in and around the area to avoid this place until the ownership changes again.

Went out for dinner on a Saturday night to celebrate a family birthday. Poor service which reflects what other people have said on their reviews. Staff appeared stressed, flustered and uncomfortable although there was only 1-2 tables having food the whole night we was there. They gave us menus and didn't tell us you had to order at the bar. We worked it out 20mins after but it would have helpful to be told. I was overcharged £10 for my food order, had to chase staff 3 times for a refund over 40mins. This did cause some stress when they were serving up starters and at this point hadn't refunded me. Whole place empty on a Saturday night (not a good sign) . They turned away another party who had a reservation, stating kitchen was closed, even though we was served food after this. Could overhear staff on phone to booking queries that they were fully booked. Strange atmosphere in pub playing gameshow's on TV on a Saturday night? Everyone liked their starters but main meals and desserts were not great (like Wetherspoons standard foos). If you're considering coming here for dinner, I would strongly suggest you give it a pass.

Visited on New year's eve. Had the Sunday roast. Went for a combo of chicken and beef. Beef was beautifully cooked and a nice slice. Chicken however, was 2 small pieces on the bone, so by the time I finished picking it off... anyway. Carrots were OK.. just. No mash, just roast potatoes (which were nice) rest of the veg was a bit of a mix up, was ok but not for me. Curly Kale in the veg, posh, but again, not to my liking. A lot of my parsnips were burnt. There was a choice of cauliflower cheese (over £4.00) I would have preferred this as part of the meal. Service was lovely. Nice friendly staff and smiling faces. Our table unfortunately was in a small conservatory (thoroughfare to the smoking area) very cold and drafty. Places were available inside the main building and remained this way throughout our visit. The pub itself is very nice but I'm afraid I won't be returning for a Sunday dinner meal. With cauliflower, your Sunday dinner is a £20 touch. Add on a sticky toffee pudding (small plastic microwave prep type pudding) and that bumps it upto a £27 bill for 2 course. I would much prefer to have a 'proper' Sunday roast dinner, cut the whistles and trumpets and charge a fair price. Still a nice place though!

When you spend £40 on food at a pub for 2 people, you expect it to be good quality. The food was no better quality than what you would get at Wetherspoons for half the price. Cheap, frozen beef patty that was microwaved. Cheap bacon rashers that were undercooked. Cheap frozen sausage that was microwaved. Cheap oven chips, you could've made at home for less than £1. Probably a nice place to have a drink, but would steer well clear of eating here. Other alternative options in the area: White Bull or The Grapes

Booked Sunday lunc h for 3 of us, at 5pm August Bank Holiday Monday 2023. Starters arrived and were fine. Main meals arrived x 2 Beef Duos and 1 Roast chicken. Massively disappointing, as they were all only tepid at best! Greens of Kale and Leek can only be described as raw! Totally inedible. No table check to raise the above. Spoke to a chap who appeared to be duty manager, he did reduce the final bill by taking the 2 beef duos off the bill and planned to speak to his chef when he got chance. So disappointing as Sunday lunch should be an enjoyable experience and not as happened where food was left uneaten. This was our 2nd trip to The Ship since it's re-fit, this trip sadly ranked as worst than the 1st. Such a shame we will not visit again as the setting is lovely. There are though, too many establishments to spend your hard earned money in these days where quality and standards are better. In my opinion The Ship cannot pull it off.

We arrived quite at about 8pm on a Saturday, cos everywhere else was fully booked up. We were relived that we'd found a place to eat, so we went and got some drinks at the bar. We were slightly confused, since it'd been a few mins and no one had seated us, so we asked the person at the bar, and they didn't even know we needed one, and didn't do anything about it, and when we rang up to book a table, she didn't even ask for a name. Finally, some one who looked like a manager, came to us and took us to a table. She sat us down and gave us a menu, and went away. We soon came to the realisation that there was practically no veg, or healthy options on the menu at all, which was quite concerning. We had decided, and sat there for ages. We saw many people return there food aswell, and we waited. We sat there for 40 minutes straight, and no one came to take our order. I know for a fact that this place isnt one where you go to a the bar to order, since we had been before, and they came to take our order. Overall, it was a complete shambles, the customer service was pathetic, the menu had not many healthy options, and the food looked just mediocre.

I would love to comment on the food (which judging by the table next to us who were complaining about their meals, seeing their actual food and the fact they left their meals -would have been interesting to say the least!) However we sat there for 45 and didn't get asked for our order - despite the pub being empty! Therefore we paid for our drinks and left - without even a comment on the fact we werent eating! There were 0 vegetable options on the menu, which didn't bode well at all for the freshness of their produce available! We had already tried 4 local pubs/restaurants which were all fully booked we can now see why this pub was empty! Safe to say we will not be returning!

Waited over an hour and a half for our food and it didn’t come. Went to the till to complain and the queue was 6 people deep complaining, so girl advised us to call to get our refund. Have been ringing and emailing for 4 weeks and only had 1 reply saying they won’t help with any refund. Has massively gone down hill. I would avoid.

Wow what a let down, busy Sunday afternoon we ordered starters and a main the starter's came, they were fantastic and fresh good food, we eagerly await our mains! 60 mins later and after a discussion with two staff members and the management we were assured they were on there way? It wasn't that busy now. My son's chicken burger arrived, a Caesar salad that was supposed to be a chicken Caesar salad and one Sunday lunch arrived, one meal missing, my daughter quired her lack of chicken in the salad and my meal totally missing? The salad was taken away and came back with two very dry chicken wing quarters on top, the chicken burger was also dried out to dust and still one Sunday lunch missing. The others had nearly finished when my main arrived, lovely fresh food. There was a lack of apologies, I asked if our food had been forgotten and was told yes then no! Obviously the chicken had by left to dry under the lamp, all the management had to do was show some concern to what had happened to my family's food. I used to frequent the ship every couple of months but it will be a while before I go again...... Simple to show acknowledgment for a mistake, but not there

Well. Alway said we should go and try there. Turns out we should have gone earlier. Most of the pubs to eat around are naff. I defiantly would not recommend any outside of the ship at Freckleton and eagle at Wheaton, both owned by the same people. But, we have now found another. The Ship at Elswick. Who knew. Definite thumbs up from us. Well done

Great food. Went at a busy time so to be expected to wait for food. Some tables were catered for IE table service, check backs others left to order drinks at the bar and no check back on food and no offer to see the desert menu. The pub is well maintained and has multiple areas to relax before and after meals.

A discrepancy between the Father's Day menu online and the menu on the table caused confusion. We sat for too long waiting for our food order to be taken before we realised we had to order at the bar. This hadn't been explained to us as we were seated. I'm not sure ordering at the bar is the way forward.when you are trying not to be just a pub but a restaurant.

Lovely place and staff but the portion of lasagne was small. More like a child's portion. I can see why they offer garlic bread with it for an extra £2.50. I'm didn't order it as I'm at the older end of the scale and not a big eater ‐ honestly!
