We stopped here en route to our final destination, having researched in the area first to find somewhere dog and child friendly. The initial impression on arrival - a relatively dated interior and empty except for us - didn't set our sights particularly high, but we received a warm welcome and were pleasantly surprised at the diversity of fare on the menu. We ordered from the children's menu for our daughters - garlic bread starter followed by sausages and mash - and from the set menu for the three adults. My husband and I had starters - goats cheese and pate respectively - whilst M-i-L had just a main course of lasagne. We were astounded at the speed of arrival of starters, and even more astounded at how delicious and well-presented they were. The mains arrived equally expeditiously when we'd finished the first course, and were equally impressive. The two girls then partook of ice-cream (great!) and brownie (a little dry). The staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit, and happily provided water and a warm welcome to our young dog. All in all a great experience, and one we very much hope to repeat in the future.

A Friday supper after a long absence in this cosy inn, having booked a hour before. Prawn cocktail followed by Gammon steak & chips which were very tasty. The others had soup & chicken dishes which was enjoyable. The meals arrived in a timely manner with just one server. The overflow dining room was closed on this occasion. The village is getting busier with parked cars etc. Arriving/departing via the M77 is another option.

What a hidden gem! We decided to go here for a birthday meal but was hesitant with the mixed reviews......glad we went! Staff are welcoming and it was a nice and cosy liitle restaurant with a pub next door. Food didnt take long to arrive and was amazing. Tasted brilliant, even the children manage to eat it all. My partner had steak pie (portion was big, steak was to die for i was told) 1st child had a burger & fries and 2nd had lasagne (they loved it), i had haggis neeps @ tatties with the most tasteful whisky cream sauce iv ever tasted. I loved it that much i even treated myself to a dessert (i never have desserts) but the millionaire shortbread cheesecake was amazing. If never been here, go give it a try.....the previous reviewers must have just went on a bad day (which we all have) will definitely be back ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Have eaten here before on one occasion. Tried to ring for three days before hand to book - phone never answered. No email or other way to be in touch. Group of friends meeting up so arrived at 6pm for a table of six. Two cars in the car park Met by disgruntled rude unhelpful unwelcoming chap. No tables available Given this close to Christmas it’s great they’re busy but to be turned away in such a rude manner, when we could see all the empty tables, was a total let down.Turned on his heel with a shrug - no apology - nothing - and left us standing there. Called another local restaurant - superb service, fab food, great atmosphere and much busier than this place. Sadly he needs a customer service update and there is no way any of will darken the door or consider going. Being busy is one thing - rudeness and abruptness is another!

We hadn’t been to the Wheatsheaf for years but were looking for somewhere for a large family gathering for an anniversary. We were allocated the private room at the back of the restaurant. The staff were friendly, the room was a little chilly but once we were all in there it was soon toasty. The service was decent enough, although my meal took that long some of our party had almost finished theirs. A few of the meals were wrong but in all fairness the food was good. My MIL has booked for us to go back again in a few weeks for a big birthday, except this time she’s been told they can’t guarantee the private room we had before (despite there being no other big bookings at the time of her making the reservation) which I find strange as it was me who booked the previous get together and I was guaranteed the room. I’ll leave a follow up review after our next visit ….

Visited for lunch with family. Waited a while before any staff arrived. Young girl didn't seem to know what she was supposed to do. Good selection on menu but portions were very small for price and we ordered from main menu. Cajun chicken only had a very small piece of chicken on it with a little rice and a tiny tub of salad. Fries were too hard to eat as overcooked. Haggis, heaps and patties although tasted ok were poorly presented, was like someone had built sandcastles with a small pot of haggis, heaps and tatties and just plonked them on the plate. Servers had no concept of space at all when serving and I constantly had plates and behinds in my face when serving our table and the one next to us. Pavlova was rock hard so could only eat a tiny bit of it. We also waited ages for the bill once finished We came away still feeling hungry. Shame as could have been so much better, won't be back anytime soon as very expensive for what we got.

Recently went to a pre birthday celebration lunch at The Wheatsheaf Inn Symington. What a great experience we had right from the start. We were welcomed at the start and shown to our table. There was a wide choice of items on the menu to suit all of our needs as on this occasion there were some of us in the party with delicate palates. While the décor of the place might be old world the food was not. It was served hot and the quality was first class. Would we return ? Most defiantly !

Been at The Wheatsheaf a number of times over the years and food always been good, however there seems to be a dip in food quality since my last visit 8 months ago. I had the cajun salmon which was very salty. So much so l couldn't eat it. The salmon came drenched in a sauce which was lacking in raster also, and to top it off it had a mini basket of chips dumped in the middle of the sauce.. Nothing Magor but definitely a touch to detail needed.. However lm not sure l would return of my own accord..

Booked a Christmas dinner here at the end of Sept. Upon arrival, we were shown to the back room in the restaurant with two other small tables and absolutely no atmosphere. There wasn’t as much as a Christmas napkin or decoration on the table, and for £65 a head I don’t think that’s much of an ask. We ordered our food at 1:30 and and waited almost 50 minutes for a starter. I can understand they would have been busy however not one member of staff approached us to apologise over the delay or offer us anymore drinks. The food was ok but was expecting a lot more as we waited as long! My partner then ordered coffee which was dumped infront of him and spilled all over the table and the young waitress simply walked away. The staff had a terrible and rude attitude, not a bit of chat or merry atmosphere amongst them! Not best pleased having almost spend £600 for us to have a family Christmas dinner in here! Would not be rushing back here after being recommended by friends.

Went here with a family of 10 for our Christmas Dinner. Was the only place we could get booked for Christmas’s to accommodate out table size had been here a few years ago and could remember having a good meal there. However, upon arrival we were put through a room In the back. No Christmas decorations anywhere not even a Christmas napkin on the table. So straight away no Christmas atmosphere. Not even a merry Christmas for the staff. Our order was taken from a set menu as you would expect for Christmas and as we knew prior to booking. However we waiting over 45 minutes for our starter. Bearing in mind we had an infant with us. No one had come to to the table to apologise for the delay. From a set menu you’d expect a speedy service but no. The man who took our drinks order first time had forgotten one of the drinks and with no staff in sight we waited the 45 minutes for him to come back to the table just before we even had our starter to say if we wanted anymore drinks. After telling him we’re still waiting on the first one for someone. His reply was “well you will get this one”. Absolutely appalling attitude and extremely rude. No apology or anything. So after the 45 minute wait for the starter. We waiting a further 45 minutes for the main and and 30 minutes for desert. Not the kind of wait you’d expect for a set menu. And even worse whilst trying to entertain an infant. The food itself was ok. But as you can imagine after waiting long periods between courses your expectations become bigger. The meal was finished off with coffee. Which was literally dumped on the table from a young girl who was clearly raging that we said yes to coffee when asked. Again dumped on the table and spilled no apology or anything. Clearly none of the staff wanted to work there that day. Which in turn their appalling attitude feeds back to the customers themselves. Not one for leaving reviews. But I felt I have to as you can imagine it upset our overall Christmas. Appalling attitude from staff and appalling atmosphere. Not a Christmas Dinner you’d expect. Especially when paying an overall total bill of £650. It honestly felt like one of those restaurants you’d see on “Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Nightmares”. As the restaurant needs a severe shake up. I feel sorry for those poor chefs through the back cooking all those meals, as they will be getting let down from the staff at the front of the house. Unfortunately because of my experience I will Not be back. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more reviews like this to come and the restaurant itself will go under due to the way it’s being run and loosing good paying customers.

Surely if you want to keep a business going you should treat your customers a bit better. Pick up only service just now and no signs to state where to go etc, they think people have to be mind readers!

I asked for a smaller portion of steak pie for my daughter (6 year old) and was quite rudely told they don’t do this. Fair enough but maybe work on the way that you speak to a customer. A simple ‘no we don’t’ in a tone was extremely abrupt and on the rude side. Adult portions of roast beef were very small and I previously remember the portions being on the large side! I would have said that it was barely adequate, maybe they were running out of beef but compared with the portions of every other meal this was rather disappointing. The quality of the food was excellent and the beef tender. The potatoes were ‘wet’ and not of good quality. (The mash that the beef sat on) the vegetables were well cooked and very tasty. The gravy was delicious and full of flavour. Compliments to the chef. I thought that bringing the children’s meals out after the adults was not great as children are usually the priority in a family and as one member was very young I would say this could have been rectified. (The sausages were well received and looked to be of a high standard.) This happened with the dessert also. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious and the hot chocolate fudge cake was good and was a generous portion. Overall a good meal but I felt that it was not as friendly as I previously remember and the tiny portion of beef compared with every other meal was extremely disappointing.

He was and we all were in the middle of his dinner, i took the beef olives which i always do and they were rotten, wee roast potatoes too were burnt to crisp, not once did anyone ask if everything was OK, so we decided to pay leave and won't be back, totally unacceptable the way we were treated and food has went really downhill, never again

Had not visited here for many years so thought a return was required. Menu online looked promising. On arrival we were seated quite quickly and our young female server relatively polite but others were less so. Food was average at best. Steak burger itself was nice but I was served the smallest salad I had ever seen. Imagine slightly larger than a 50p coin and the coleslaw whilst fine was a similar size . A prawn salad was passable too. Desserts ordered and a nice sticky toffee pudding with raspberry cheesecake whilst on the small side was nice. I'd say the full meal was a bit overpriced. The decor was old worlde to note. Would we return? No. There's much better in neighbouring towns.

The prices highly competitive but certainly an excellent eating out experience, helped too by a Brandy coffee made absolutely brilliantly.....a real pub with just the right atmosphere and full attention to detail by staff and in the food presentation

This was the first time I had been in the Wheatsheaf Inn in Symington. Was taken there for works Christmas lunch. The Christmas menu was very good with a fair choice of courses. The staff were friendly and the service was very good. Everyone enjoyed their meal and all of the dishes served were very well prepared. The portions were a very good size. Would recommend to anyone in the area.

This is a typical wotherspoons pub. Good prices for food and drinks. This is a spacious pub and you can reserve tables for a larger party of people.

This place was recommended. We decided to go for two course menu. Setting was alright but a little drafty. The starter wasn’t great. Very average. The main course was very nice and hot, unlike the starter. The service was just alright. The staff were very pleasant. The toilets needed a bit of a clean and the cleaning of tables wasn’t the best that I’ve seen. The tea after meal was also cold. I will not be rushing back.

Although located in a small village, the Inn has a good reputation and pulls in customers from surrounding towns.

Whilst filming an interview in Symington for the day, my friends and I got a little hungry so our guest suggested we try the pub round the Corner which happened to be this one.

Not visited the Wheatsheaf for many years but now living temporarily in the area. Still nice pub to visit, decor not changed. Food nice but would prefer a ‘lighter menu’ which I think could be popular.

Amazing. Holidayed in Scotland for a week and this was- by far- the best food we had! We had a set menu, £12.95 for 2 courses. I had Cullen Skunk, which was amazing!! Smoked haddock and potato soup, the smoky flavour of the haddock contrasted beautifully with the creaminess of the soup. Flawless. For main, I opted for haggis, neeps and tarries with a sweet whisky sauce. It was sublime. The neeps and tatties were smooth and creamy, the haggis felt tender and light. The real star was the sauce. It was heavenly. We also opted for desert: sticky toffee pudding with rich butterscotch sauce and double cream, which was also extremely tasty. The staff were friendly, relaxed and helpful, and 3 courses plus a drink for 2 people came in at an extremely reasonable £48. It was worth every penny. I would urge anyone to eat here.

Had a early dinner here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was very good and it was competitively priced. The only new comment is the veg was very scarce, athought it was very tasty there was not enough. It would not stop me returning.

One large as above but with black pudding, potatoes scone. With unlimited tea and coffee under £11.00. Very hard to beat piping hot and great service.

My wife and I are occasional visitors to The Wheatsheaf. On Saturday 26 May dropped in for lunch with two two grandchildren and sat outside in the hot sun - not busy. Ordered drinks, no problem; ordered food then waited for 40 minutes until my wife went up to complain to the owner about time taken for food. Finally got food in a further 10 minutes.

We popped in for late lunch in the beer garden. Beautiful biding with a great beer garden at the back. Service was quick and friendly. Food was very tasty, the potato skins starter was amazing - proper crispy potato skins, burger was homemade and tasty (and no brioche bun which is a big bonus for us!) and I really enjoyed my salad. Well worth a visit, we would definitely return

The lentil soup was to die for and the chicken and haggis (plus the AMAZING whisky sauce) is my go to main meal! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a cute meal out because the staff are always smiling and you never wait long to be served.

It had been nearly twenty years since I had last eaten here so daughter took me and grandkids for lunch. She had raved about the lasagne, my favourite dish, but I decided on steak pie, potatoes and veg. Grandson had a kids meal which he scoffed, granddaughter (aged 2) had lasagne as apparently she had eaten all of it the last time she was there, daughter also had lasagne. My lunch was lovely and hot with nicely cooked veg. Puff pastry was perfect but could have done with more meat, less gravy. I also hate having it served in individual pots but that's a minor inconvenience. When I saw and smelt the lasagne however I was instantly thinking that is not homemade - it was served in bowls which was just as well as it would have slopped all over the place on a plate. Bechamel sauce? Doubt there was any in it at all. I had a taste and knew instantly had either been bought in a shop or made from a jar, and cheap mince too, gads. Granddaughter never touched hers, and daughter (not known for leaving any grub!) left almost half. She said it was nothing like the one she had had a couple of weeks previously. At £13 not really on to be serving at all. Atmosphere was lovely with coal fire, desserts were nice and service was excellent. Just a pity about the lasagne which has lowered the rating considerably!!

Rotten service spoilt the tasty macaroni cheese. Ordered Mac Cheese which came with garlic bread. Garlic burns my throat so I asked at the till for it to be replaced with ordinary bread - no problem said the cashier. Meal arrived with the garlic bread on the plate. Asked for it to be changed only to be told it couldn't be done as they don't do substitutes. Thankfully it wasn't allergy issue!

Visited recently and could not believe how bad the food was. Slice sausage was the cheapest of cheap frozen rubbish from Farmfoods or the likes of it. Chicken curry was simply not edible, again cheap frozen junk and the food was over priced.

Have eaten a few times here over the last year. Visited again this week and was disappointed at the portion sizes that have clearly shrunk. We overheard the table beside us comment too. I’d rather be charged a couple of quid extra for the same portion size rather than see them shrink and keep the prices. The chicken Caesar salad look like a starter portion and the Tablet Sundae comes a with a really long spoon but a very shallow dish. Strange decisions have been made by management! Staff were very friendly, though.
