Had a really good meal there tonight as it was my husbands birthday on Wednesday so we decided to go for a meal tonight

Great family cooked meals with great friendly staff. Any issues see angry Heather.

I came here on the weekend with my children the prices were very reasonable it was a very nice relaxed atmosphere. they had a lovely outdoor seating area next to a large field which meant that my children could play on the field right next to our table so I could keep an eye on them. They also had board games available to use inside the bar for customers or children to entertain themselves it definitely kept the kids happy. The lady on the bar was absolutely lovely and we all left very happy with our day children included.

Been taken over. Not the same anymore. Used to be a favourite. Booked in advance today for 2pm. No lemonade on draft and no cola later. No strawberries either for the eton mess. No lamb left. No mash potato on the lunch at all as apparently the potatoes arent in season. Kids disappointed as they just had roast potatoes. Desserts were nice. Tbh won't be going back as it's not as good as it was. Sunday lunch was nice don't get me wrong. But meat and just roast potatoes wasn't nice for the kids. Only one tray of veg for 8 of us as well, more choice of veg would have been better. Young lasses serving are lovely though. 3 stars given as they had ran out of lots of things.

Was a bit wary after reading some of the reviews, however couldn't fault our visit. Staff very friendly/welcoming and food hot and delicious. Would definitely recommend, we'll be returning soon 😊

From the moment I went in with Mam and Dad we couldn't have been made more welcome. The doors were opened wider to get their wheels in by a lovely Gentleman. Regulars chatting to them as they came in like they we're old friends even though we've only been once before about a yr ago. Then D greeted us and took us carefully to a table. The food was amazing, the largest small Sunday dinner I've ever seen. So much that there's enough for bubble & squeak fry up tomorrow. There was no space for pudding so we took apple crumble and custard home too. I have just had mine for tea. It was wonderful. Definitely coming again.

Went for a birthday meal with 2 very good friends and two other members of family. The food was awful steak pie both stone cold reheated chips and peas then cold,extra gravy cold. The pub was freezing people came and left because of cold. On paying bill a smell of raw sewage was coming from behind the bar told this happens when dishwasher is being used. Would not recommend this place go at your own peril.

Awful Sunday lunch, swimming in poorly made lumpy gravy and cold. Had the pork dinner did not go well with beef gravy . Very disappointed after previous visits have been quite good.

Called for lunch on the 27.2.24. Pie meat like dog food. Mash potatoes you could plaster the walls with 1 and a half hour wait for food and only 3 tables to serve. Since this place has changed hands its a No.No.No. Will not be back again.

Lovely place very helpful staff

Visited 28.1.2024 for Sunday lunch. Whilst the staff were friendly and clearly very hard working, they seemed to lack training and any sort of coherent system of work. Starters were cold, pot of tea took 40 mins to arrive, pork came without advertised crackling, one small dish of veg for 8 people, meat was dry, food was cold, roasties raw, mint sauce for the lamb never arrived, plates dropped. It’s a shame because the staff were clearly trying hard but there’s so much wrong here it needs a complete shake up. All the little bits and bobs that elevate a dining experience are missing.

Fantastic food, which is excellent value for money, generous portions, very tasty and presented really well. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Great selection of drinks too. 100% recommend.

Fantastic Food to rival a michelin star restaurant, attentive and courteous staff, accommodating and professional and personable Landlady. A great restaurant and pub located in New York and Murton Village.

Food and service was very good but was quite when we went in

This pub had a very varied menu and it was hard to pick one. In the end I plumped for the steak and kidney pie which came with chips or potatoes, and veg. As the ultra friendly barmaid told us the chips were home made we went for them. They were delicious, crispy but soft and buttery inside. The pie was the best I have ever had. It was stuffed with meat and the pastry was lovely. It was a very big portion. We couldn't manage desserts but had coffee with cream which was also delicious and came with a chocolate mint. But the best thing about our meal was the barmaid, who was so friendly and funny, but also informative about the menu. I think it will be our new favourite place, and we have a great menu selection to work through!

Absolutely amazing 👏 Visited this lovely pub for Sunday lunch it was so good I told my family and now have been again 4 times. Not only the Sunday lunch is amazing but the food through the week is also outstanding. Can't recommend this place enough!

Amazing food drinks and services as always. It’s not a big pub but it’s cozy feel familiar warmth atmosphere, feel easy chill no need to be full doll dress to come here. Just relax and easy going style and special for Dogs friendly. One guy from the pub love to say hi every dogs and giving doggy treats away ☺️

Lovely food and great service, I didn't like the sauce that was on offer with the meal I wanted and it was no trouble at all for this to be changed. Love that they have game on the menu and very reasonably priced too.

Had a table for 5 today. Grandson wanted veg only no gravy. It came swimming in gravy. Our lunches were awful! My home make steak and kidney pie was dry and tasteless the pastry horrible. The veg was ok for everyone except the roast potatoes which I suspect were fried. The Yorkshire puddings were hard and hollow also burnt. Will def not go again!

On a trip to my place of birth we were looking for somewhere to have a Sunday lunch . The Wheatsheaf was recommended , it must be 30 years since the last time I was in the pub . Sunday is booking only and after our roast I can understand why , the chicken and pork were both excellent . Roast potatoes and mash , homemade sage and onion stuffing , huge Yorkshire pudding , 4 veg cooked just right and plenty of gravy . We finished with blackberry and apple crumble and custard , delicious. I noticed homemade rabbit and blackpudding pie on the menu , so we made a return visit in the week. I was not disappointed , the pie came with new potatoes I asked our lovely waitress if it was possible to have mash . The chef was very obliging (thank you) , we returned the next Sunday for another of this chefs lovely roasts. I'm home now and won't be back in the North East until early next year when I will pay another visit to The Wheatsheaf Inn

We have been going here for a long time now ,always great fresh made food every day ,menu and specials are always great , great all round selection of food and drinks.

Dreadful place . Dirty outside area .... Food was really awful ... I had gammon steak ... Egg was fried hard .. The peas were a peculiar beige colour ... and the triple cooked chips tasted like they'd been cooked 3times in very old oil ... You'd think they'd bring the washing line in . and clear away litter and cigarette butts. Birds in a cage out the back also attracted lots of flies to the area . Avoid this place.

A good local pub good food and drink, good for sports.

Our favourite local pub! Such a hidden gem. Great beer garden. Usually quiet but has a lovely atmosphere.

Good pub to sit outside and enjoy a drink in the sun. Set well back from the main road so you don't hear a lot of traffic noise. They do food and have a large car park.

Was just passing so we called in and we had a starter (light bite) just something quick with a pint of larger , it was very nice, the bar staff member was very friendly and chatty

Beautiful food every time! The black pudding fritters starter is out of this world! Sunday lunch is amazing every time, dog friendly in the bar area (you can eat there too) but not in the restaurant area, loads of outdoor seating for those sunny days.

This bar has so much potential. Could be one of the best in the area, but lacks atmosphere.

Outstanding meal here last week. Had a little bit of a wait but could tell the food was freshly cooked so that didn't matter at all. Venison pie looked amazing my son said it was lovely. I had fish and chips again beautiful. Will definitely be back.

We visited this pub a few weeks ago. We had the best homemade steak and kidney pie with chips and veg, best pub food I can remember, 10 out of 10 👍

Before we moved away this was my local for years. Great pub, great food and friendly locals.

Delicious food in nice surroundings. We were very well looked after by Diane. Shame no rabbit pie left, but we look forward to trying it next time. Generous portions and great value.

Friendly staff, nice inside. There was a good food selection and we all enjoyed our food. We got fish and chips, venison pie and chicken tikka flatbread.

Very friendly host and hostess, at last we were served Cod which was cooked to perfection, instead of Pollock which alot of places are selling

Great and friendly service and really amazing to let us bring our puppy in to help him get used to being around people and ither dogs in close proximity. Definitely a worthwhile visit

Even though it has a more formal bit for meals it still feels like a proper pub.

Not very friendly, tried to book a few days in advance for mother's day and they wouldn't accept any bookings, but when I arrived on mother's day they said you needed to book. So not a great experience at all

Went there for a small event. Buffet set was only small as required but was excellent. Fresh and tasty. Comfortable and nice friendly staff.

Lovely staff, served and shown to our table immediately. Clean and tidy with a lovely atmosphere. Sunday dinner we all chose the lamb dinner and it was so delicious and generous portions of both the meat and the vegetables and the yorkshire pudding was huge!! Excellent all round and will be recommending to friends and family. Well done to all the staff and chef's today made my day the best on Mothers day!!

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here today. Really good portions of meat with the lunch and a generous portion of veg. My daughter has the steak pie which also looked delicious. Just found out that you can also get a smaller portion on request. Had the apple crumble for desert which was delicious, just might have had a bit more custard, and my wife had the cheesecake which came as a substantial portion. Nice clean pub with friendly staff.

Extremely accommodating for my young family, we didn’t feel judged or like an inconvenience. The kids were so relaxed the service was phenomenal from the moment we walked in! The food! Was to die for! We had a beef dinner and a lamb dinner and every part of the meal was delicious! They even gave us a box for my son to bring home and finish (he’s 2 years old)! 100 percent recommend!

The venison pie is the best I've tasted, perfect in every way. A very generous portion of pie along with fresh vegetables and homemade chips. Excellent service from the welcoming staff.

Amazing food, really helpful staff. Phoned ahead and asked them about vegan food, and by the time I arrived they had come up with four potential options, all off menu. Chose the cauliflower steak with peppercorn sauce (made from coconut milk), and it was utterly amazing. Well seasoned cauliflower and stellar peppercorn sauce. Good portion sizes too. Loved every moment, and a great price too. I will definitely be back.

Old fashioned and all the better for it... for a pub the food is excellent whether traditional country pies or the more adventurous dishes on the menu... if you want a fancy environment go to a restaurant in town, otherwise get along here for a friendly pint and good meal...

Delicious lunch here today, generous portions and great quality

Had the risotto with salmon and prawns and can say it's the worst risotto I've ever had. Disgusting flavour. Also salmon very dry and prawns were not fresh perhaps off. I'll not be back.

Nice and quiet but still waited nearly 1 hour for food. Food was very bland. Chicken tikka wrap had too much mint sauce. Complained She said I'll let the chef know. Waitress has no people skills. Won't be back.

Fine friendly place with a pleasant outdoor area and a good selection of beers and lagers: ideal on a hot sunny day.

Went today for the first time. The place was very clean with sensible, clear and unambiguous Covid related practices in place. Staff attentive and friendly. We all chose something different from the varied menu. The food was excellent, freshly cooked, very tasty and served hot. Portions if anything too big. Good value for money. We recommend & we'll be back.
