West Hoe Fish Fryers in Plymouth

Place has gone right downhill of late. Use to enjoy the food here, fish could do with frying a bit longer and please cut back on the vinegar

I loved the fish and chips here ! However, on the day I have ordered Cod Fish, mushy peas and onion rings! Lady at the till had bag for everyone with just one item but for some reason she was sure I don’t need a bag! I wonder what was different with me, maybe she has seen 3 arms which I could not discover before ! Thanks for being nice to me !

Absolutely excellent fish and chips, light crisp batter and the best, light, crispiest chips ever! It is always a treat to visit here.

Had a lovely meal here...ordered the light bite (£7.99) small piece of fish, chips, mushy peas & pot of tea. More than enough food for me. Freshly cooked and tasted great.

Deelish! I had the small tasty bite: fish, chips, mushy peas and a cup of tea for £7.99. Just the right amount, I usually skip most of the batter but this was perfect.

Got to say, I rarely review but want to make sure others don’t receive a bad experience. I say, you need to improve, dramatically. Bought meals that I would say is on the higher side prices. Given you’re next to a mariner and waterside apartments I would have expected a premium price but not a sub standard meal. Fish and chips was very greasy, unappealing to eat. Batter may as well have been mush in a pot. On top, I would say be less direct with your customer service. I ordered a few meals so forgive me if i wanted to check. Don’t just butt in and send me on my way. Back to the food. You need to compare your quality with others. If you’re looking to milk all the profits then you’ll lose your locals. But also, up your game with your staff. Good luck.

Looking forward to trying the fish and chips and decided to sit in , £68!!! Women were awful! No greeting! Menus dumped down, said thankyou nothing in reply! Food was lovely, very much let down by the service and the cost!

Some unkind reviews here of late! Yes, it had a 'magical buzz' when Nick was behind the counter and recognised you after your 1st visit a month ago and remembered what you wanted. A box of chips were passed down the queue of 20 people waiting in the line and the anticipation for an awesome box of f&c grew. Those days have gone. The gent frying our fish is still around and, yes, the ladies serving could be a little 'more Nick' with their customer service skills, but the fish is still good, the chips today were great and no cause for complaint. We all wish for the 'old days' but all's still good

No words can describe the utter rubbish dished out from thos chip shop yesterday. I was going to march down there are throwing up a very hard sided cheese burger and what I can only describe as grey chips. I don't think I've ever whitenessed such awful.food. How could you serve that up ??? Please explain ????. I threw 80 % of tbe chips away . My cheese burger had been reheated resulting in a hard sided burger. I took two bites and a small amount of chips. Less an hour later I was throwing it up. My daughter didn't touch her nuggets and the part of the chips. I just wished I'd bothered to come in after being so.ill. I forgot to mention my daughter who popped in to get the lunch said the staff were rude as well.

Living in a retirement apartment on Plymouth's West Hoe, the West Hoe Fryers is a very popular visit. We placed an order for 18 meals for collection mid afternoon for an afternoon Pimm's and 'fish and chips party' with fellow residents. Our views were unanimous; the food was absolutely delightful; packaged well to preserve the quality, and carefully wrapped to survive, albeit a pretty short journey, without detriment to batter or finish of fish or pie or chips. The feedback is simple - great food, great service and great care in preparing a big first class takeaway, delivered in first class condition. It made our afternoon event and was thoroughly well received by all.

I stand by that they have the best fried fish in the UK. The crispy batter is the best, and I grew up at the coast. The chips are cooked on too high a heat so inside they are a little hard even outside is golden.

Fish was very small for the price and the chips were soggy, some tasting raw in the middle. Will not be returning!

Just picked up a take away from West Hoe Fish Fryers it is the worst fish and chips I have ever had the misfortune of having. Chips rock hard stale cold and the haddock was over cooked I mean dark brown batter. Thank you so much it went in the Bin.

Fish was fresh, very small pieces of fish for the amount of money. Portion size of a large chips is woeful. Also I ordered 2 large chips and there was only one in the bag, too late to go back as I had checked into the ferry terminal.

Really expensive £27 for fish and chips for 2 people plus one soft drink! Used to be the best in Plymouth not anymore. The fish was very average and the chips can only be described as scraps. Once you have placed your order you have to stand outside! Why? The staff acted as if they were doing use a favour just serving us. Save your cash eat at home.

Sadly, used to be excellent chips, fresh and cooked by a real enthusiast fellow, but now...I bought two portions (small amount now) and when I unwrapped them, full of blackened sodden squiggles. My wife couldn't eat more than a few. Pity . Been a customer for more than 20 years.Never again.Rubbish!

I often visit this fish & chip shop for a takeaway lunch, the food is always cooked fresh to order, the staff are always friendly & polite & the owner Nick always says hello. Tonight I took the hubby, we intended to use the new chippy shack on the Hoe, but it wasn’t manned, so we walked to my favourite chippy. The air was cold so we sat inside the cosy cafe, again not many places that you can go later in the evening & sit inside. Fish & chips all freshly cooked & a nice hot pot of tea. As we all know fish & chips are not cheap, but this is definitely value for money & we will be back. The service was quick & the premises clean & had a nice chat with the owner Nick.

I will very happily disagree with the negative reviews. This has always been our favourite fish and chip shop and this evening, on a busy sunny Saturday, we had cod and chips for two, fish was crispy and tasty and large, chips were plentiful, service was friendly and efficient, what more could you ask for? We ate it sitting in the evening sun, quiet and peaceful, thanks guys!

This chippie was always one of our favourites we have been going there for over 20 years but not anymore🥲very anaemic chips, cooked but not crispy - totally uninspiring and lacked salt and vinegar. Portion of fish was all batter and no fish . Don’t know what’s happened to the staff very unfriendly . Where is the man who use to welcome you with open arms and a smile and a joke and you even got some tasters of chips whilst you waited in the queue. Good times now gone ,

Been coming here for years always been spot on, now im dissapointed got takeaway tonight we ordered fish and chips for 4 people which cost £50 and we travelled from cornwall , now the chips were not cooked to perfection very white and uncooked the curry sauce was stone cold and it was very salty not enough vineagar and no wooden forks placed in the bag, im not a happy customer and sadly will not be returning again and neither will my family unless we see an improvment!

Im unsure if this place is under "new" management but this used to be a lovely chip shop, not so much now, im afraid the majority of poor reviews are correct! we wasted money as neither myself or family could eat this due to the grease covering peice of "regular" cod wich also seemed alot smaller then what it used to be. They also seem to be stuck in the times of covid insiting people order, pay and then wait outside no matter the weather even when not many customersare around. I'm sure the owner will snap back with some form of comment, being unwilling to read through reviews and realise alot of people saying the same thing and them changing any aspects of their chippy to bring back a chip shop that once was a lovely place. I wont be visiting again.

Used quite often, not again. Absolutely, diabolical, 26 quid wasted lucky we got a dog. I think the dog enjoyed it.So not a total waste

Lucky I could park outside, early weekday evening. Prices seem to have risen substantially and so much needs to be thawed, kick started in a microwave and then takes a while in with or alongside a sluggish batch of chips. For the first I spotted their new board with specials and odd ball items- of which the ‘deep fried bounty’ caught my eye.

Used to be lovely fish and chips a few years ago. Not sure if it's a new owner. Quick service, girls on counter not friendly , small portion , not very tasty .

We eat there every Tuesday evening without fail, the food is excellent and the service is great, the prices are very good and you certainly get value for money and in my opinion the best fish and chips in Plymouth.

Much better now that the man who normally runs it is back in charge.

We've used this lovely place a lot over the years and never been disappointed. Highly recommend.

Took the children on the hoe for some fresh air even though the weather was rubbish and they really wanted chips after so went to west hoe and the woman on the counter was lovely she even put my children’s chips in a kids activity box for them and gave them chocolate. She was very kind polite and my children want to go back agin. I don’t understand the negative reviews and think personally some people need to look how they go into a takeaway/shop and concentrate how they speak to staff members because they are there doing a brilliant job.

Children are off school so thought it would be really busy so was delighted when me and my husband could sit in. Lovely fish and chips and the lady on the counter was very polite. The staff always make me feel welcome here. The ladies are always laughing and joking around which is lovely to hear. Definitely my favourite fish and chip restaurant.

Went to buy fish and chips, politely asked if we could have a few extra chips in the children’s box, to be told by a very abrupt woman no because “the manager is here” I replied with “oh” and she said rudely “ yes, I am the manager”. So exited the establishment and took my hungry business elsewhere, to a place where I won’t get spoken to like faeces on someone’s shoe. #hungry #needsremindingsherunsachipshop Won’t be visiting again, such a shame as lovely and welcoming staff prior to her stepping into the management role at this former fantastic establishment.

Person on the till was very rude, not just to myself but to the customers that followed shortly after us. It was like she didn’t want to be there. For a grown person, in a customer facing role, you’d think they’d have a better attitude. Enough for me not to go again.

This used to be a great chippy, nowadays they don’t smile or hardly say a word with a thank you for the custom . My wife’s fish was uncooked in places . Very disappointed as it used to be so nice .

First time visit yesterday after a recommendation from my dad who is regular. So hot and fresh! Both fish and chips made to order - weren’t taken from hot stand. Fish was huge, really fresh and thick. Good batter. Tasty chips and just the right amount. Nice curry sauce. Great location - can also enjoy the sea views. Will definitely be back!

Lovely friendly staff. Felt very welcome. The fish and chips is always of great quality and was the same last night. Perfect chips and crispy batter and tasty cod. Served attractively. Good value. Lovely to have a sit down meal there…..have never done that in any other chip shops but this one is worth it. Has a battered mars bar too …. Delicious

Great fish and chips, small seating area and it costs more to eat in. Very popular, a great selection to choose from. Friendly staff, had mine with a cup of tea.

Whilst the food is lovely, the portion sizes are small, especially for the price. Ordered a large chips and got what would be considered a regular size elsewhere for £2 more than anywhere on the barbican charges, for example. The fish is nice enough, I don't dispute but is clearly frozen as it drips watery substances when you try to eat it - usually indicative of frozen fish (I work in the hospitality industry, and am married to a kitchen manager, we know our stuff!). The platter we bought boasts multiple different fishy bits such as prawns, calamari, etc etc (4 or 5 different bits).... but honestly the average 4 year old wouldn't be full up on it and that's supposed to be an adults main? Again, for £6 I'd expect a decent amount not a nibblet of each thing. All in all, we're rather disappointed. Given that I've just had a major surgery and was so excited to finally leave my house and get fish and chips....im really let down. I should have just ordered in from Cornwall Street fish bar or Harbourside. I feel we'd have had a more enjoyable meal if we had.

For the cost the portion sizes are DISGUSTING. Large chips barely even compared to a medium from any other shop in plymouth and you pay almost £5 for the privilege of being short changed. A £20 dinner better spent at a fast food chain for amount offered. I know times are hard for everyone but if yoi choose the luxury of a takeaway you expect to get a little more than simple what I can only describe as a kids portion

I’m disabled, I needed to sit down as being unwell suddenly. I was refused. Even though I already bought a takeaway. I have gone there several times in 20 years, and this the first time they was rude to me. The food was not cooked. Normally it’s been perfect.

Went for lunch. We asked for pensioner portions but were advised very rudely "we do junior meals, is that what you want"? We said we would have junior meals. We were then ordered outside to wait, no please or thank you just "wait outside we'll call your number when it's ready". When our number was called the meal was being drenched in salt, certainly not something we had asked for.

Had a lovely portion of fish, chips and curry sauce for lunch yesterday and it was absolutely delicious. The owner Nic and his staff are always very welcoming and friendly. We’ve been coming to the West Hoe Fish Fryer’s for many years. Keep up the great work guys 😃

Went there excited to have some fish n chips for tea, the service is what put me off, it seemed like the lady behind the counter had a real bad attitude for some reason, I noticed it straight away and I wasn't the only person to notice. The food was definitely nothing to shout about either, won't be back and I don't recommend it.

I have just moved into the West Hoe area. As it was a Saturday evening I decided to have fish and chips my favourite take away. It was 7 pm on a rather wet and windy evening. I went in and placed my order. As the place was almost empty I said is it OK to wait inside the door? The young woman who served me snapped go wait outside. I would say she was in her 20s, 5'8".She wore glasses and had dark tattoos up her arms. One of the other members of staff heard the way she spoke to me and said it was OK to stand out of the rain. I am a man in my mid 60s so I was greatful to this lady. After the meal was ready the one with the glasses continued to glare at me and as I watched she shook a load of salt over my meal. It meant the meal tasted so salty I could not taste it properly. It was a shame because the other young women working there seemed really nice. This young woman appeared to have issues but with her abrupt manner with customers it is not much wonder the place was empty on a Saturday night. She presented an attitude that she was too good to be working there. Unfortunately she is a business buster.

The Food (battered sausage and chips) was nice enough, portions average but acceptable, staff friendly and helpful, the price just too much. £18+ for 4 regular battered sausages 2 large chips (enough for 2 people to share) and a regular portion of chips. Just too much for what it is in my opinion.

This place used to be spot on, but quality of the food is now terrible in comparison. Should have realised things had taken a turn for the worse when I arrived at 6pm and there was nobody waiting! Definitely won’t return.

Large chips at £4.40. Prices have gone up and portions have gone down. Flat to level of the cardboard tray. Really disappointing.

Very good takeaway fish and chip shop with the added bonus that if you wanted to eat in there is some additional seating inside and some benches outside across the road. Just need to dodge the scrounging seagulls. The chips and Plaice was very tasty and a decent size portion for 1. Didn't have too excessive a wait for the food. 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thus part was the review I done over a year ago. So we decided to check out the local fish & chips. Must get your priorities right😆👊. We had Haddock & Chips, sat down. All excellent, clean, very hot and tasted great. A good start for our move, Cheers. Now we've used this chippy over the last year several times and each time it seemed to be loosing its charm. And today was enough is enough. We order a large chips and two saveloys and by the time we got home and unwrapped our food we said, that's not large chips. I known the whole country is strapped for cash and life is hard and the cost of this and that has gone up, but come on. Sorry to say this chippy has lost its way. We previously gave a four (4) but is a definite two (2) max.

Not very impressed. Came in yesterday afternoon . Food was horrible, like they'd just warmed up sausage and chips that had been there a while, not fresh at all, however,curry sauce was amazing. Told to wait outside in the cold as well, which wasn't great. I could understand if it wascrazy busy, as it's a small shop, but there were 3 orders including ours. Not really overwhelming. Had better from them.

Recently moved to Plymouth and didn’t think we would find another chippy as good as the one near our previous home but this is just as good! The fish was perfect with lovely batter and very well presented. Will definitely go back. Highly recommended!
