This was my first visit and I would absolutely go back! The food was amazing, everything was made from scratch in the deli and it tasted excellent. The service was great and the staff were very friendly and welcoming The only negative is the minimal seating available, but it is a small store so I can understand why there is less available

A great venue for many years, as regular visitors for breakfast we have enjoyed superb porridge, amazing toast and exceptional coffee served by charming staff. However are now avoiding this establishment and go to one of the many inferior offerings in Leigh on Sea as unchecked yapping dogs are now part of the ambience. We were unable to hold a conversation and other customers were visibly cringing at the level of noise generated. If this issue is not addressed and despite its many attributes this business will fail, given the raft of alternative venues in very close proximity.

Plenty of wine but no cheese :( We had a great night, fab atmosphere and the band were brilliant - really enjoyed it however ... We got there 8.01pm and all the tables and window seats were taken - we found some space which was fine but then we were told we would have to help ourselves to the food on other people's tables. Being British we weren't keen on leaning over or pushing in between complete strangers to help ourselves to the platter of delights they were tucking into. Disappointed that we got basically zilch food to soak up the wine by which all accounts was free flowing all evening. If we go back we will be outside, front of the queue to grab our cheese!

This is a great cafe with yummy food but with a huge growing amount of young families in the area and lots of babies, I can’t understand why you don’t have baby changing facilities and that we have to squat or kneel on the floor. It’s insane to do so as a mum who had a complicated labour and should not be kneeling down on the floor to change my child. Please consider getting this sorted so mums keep coming back and don’t avoid coming to you for this reason.

After a chilly long walk around the top of the Leigh-on-Sea we walked back to Leigh-on-Sea only to find this cosy place. Staff friendly and smiley upon walking in, but my only reason for four stars is that the set up to order is bit confusing and not much space to order. Good selection to choose from and all reasonable priced. We ordered two hot choc with marshmallows and cream. As hot choc goes it was really tasty. We have walked past this place for years and never realised it was there but will be going back for lunch as all looks really great.

In the heart of Leigh, this is a wonderful cafe serving excellent Illy coffee. It also provides a mean bacon sarnie. Service is invariably excellent. You may not get you coffee within a nano second of placing your order, but it's worth the wait. Early mornings it can be busy (and noisy) as parents and their young children arrive for a caffeine fix (babychino for toddlers !!). Other times it is a bit more chilled with relaxing unobtrusive music. Well worth a visit.

Went to the cafe for a light breakfast, they had advertised " Big Cheese on Toast" so ordered two of those along with two drinks. The drinks took ages to arrive and without any apology or acknowledgement of the wait. When the cheese on toast finally arrived it consisted of two slices of cheap supermarket bread with a thin layer of cheese just about melted on the top. Just not good enough and we will not be going back.

Every now and then I get a fancy for a panini and this is my place of choice to fulfil that need. The benches and general decor lend a distinctiveness against other eateries in Leigh and it's a nice airy atmosphere. If it's sunny day, it's an ideal location to sit outside and watch the world go by as you sip your coffee. The staff are friendly and the food is promptly prepared. (Although it's not much preparation to make a panini!)The food itself is really nice. To get the best out of the menu, I'd avoid the regular "ham and cheese" type things and go for the more interesting recipes. It's well worth it.

Visited today with my grown up daughters for coffee and found it to be fine despite some other reviews on here. The only down side is the communal tables and benches ... we had to share with a screaming baby so not really relaxing! The coffee was nice and the pot of tea really generous and well presented. Some places in Leigh make you feel second class if you just want drinks but didn't get that impression here. We were thinking of having lunch here too today but it was heaving when we arrived so had to go elsewhere. A better table set up would help I think. Overall though it seems a good place.

I pop in regular if ever I'm in Leigh and have never had bad food or a bad experience, Leigh is a very busy area and most of the restaurants Tea rooms etc get very full, I think you have to accept that you have to wait sometimes for food and drinks, I understand people have Busy lives and need to rush, and if that's the case go somewhere less busy, reading one of the reviews from a person saying about an old lady that works there, are you sure you were in 'Went To Market' because there are no 'OLD LADIES' that work there, I love the panini's and coffee, and the Staff are always friendly and helpful as much as they can be for a busy deli.

My children absolutely love it, especially the baby chinos they do here! I was shocked to see some of the recent comments on here as a regular because my experience has always been faultless! This is the sort of place I usually go to have a nice panini and latte with my other half, recently customer service so poor you can even hear staff making compliments(my sarcastic approach) about your orders example when you order latte comes up as cappuccino and then staff doesn't want to own their mistake and makes a compliments to other Coworker such as "are you having laugh?"... yes it is true .... it shows how Terrible and horrible uneducated rude staff is... Then I have decided to not sit in there and taking their rudeness went there again for a take away latte and after waiting approx 10 min to be served , so same old lady just served to guy behind me and she just avoided even the guy apologized I said "it's not you mate ,its her she's loosing customers "and her answer was to the guy "carry on" very interesting attitude towards customers , management needs to improve, I'll advise to entire TripAdvisor if your coming to leigh from wherever you don't want to be treated like that just go elsewhere, anywhere instead of this place. Went with my partner for lunch as our usual favourite was full so thought to try somewhere new. The staff chatted for 5 minutes amongst themselves before paying any attention to us. We ordered 2 coffees, 2 salads and a sausage roll which came to £20 which I felt was a bit expensive when our food finally come out after a 20 minute wait (even though there was only 6 other people there already eating). My salad had a lot of oil and they had initially forgotten the sausage roll, when I asked for it they said did I want it hot or cold, so I asked for hot and when they brought it out it was cold! With so much competition in the area they need to up their game.

Popped in for lunch while out shopping. We ordered 'fajita wrap' and 'mozzarella, sundried tomato, avocado wrap' and a couple of drinks. Food was okay, nothing special - the two wraps looked identical and a bit odd; they were square, like a squished parcel, not an actual wrap. The mozzarella one was hot, which was a bit strange - I expected a straightforward roll-up chilled wrap. It wasn't unpleasant, just odd (made the avocado uber-slimy). K declared his fajita wrap 'disappointing' and very ordinary. Not until we sat down did we notice the 'all day breakfast' menu on the opposite wall to the main menu wall and behind you when you order. Perhaps having both menu's together would make more sense. Almost took a nasty tumble when I trod on food under the bench - the floor around the tables/benches could have done with a good sweep to scoop up bread crusts, tomato, cheese etc etc. Overall rating - average.

First of all, 'Went to market' looks great inside and out, Aside from the chalkboard menus being unreadable..! It has a lovely atmosphere and looking menu.We just wanted a quick bite to take away, waited 5 mins whilst young staff chatted amongst themselves rather than taking our order..we then waited a further 20 mins for a toasted sandwich etc, pretty sure staff had to pop to tescos to get some ingredients...so not great if your looking to take away I guess. Upon eating the sandwich I had the feeling i had been just a little ripped off, its a tad overpriced for what you get, a hastily prepared and under toasted? A friend had the vegetable soup, upon which he had to pay an extra £1.50 for a slice of bread - Small soup portion... totalling £6? We called in for lunch as WTM is one of the few casual eateries in Leigh where you can easily find space for a buggy/pushchair. My wife raves about the food - it's ok as far as I'm concerned; not sure how you can get a pre-prepared and recently toasted panini wrong though. It was ok.However, the service is appalling. We had to clean the table ourselves when we first arrived as, although they took away the plates on the table, they neglected to bother to even wipe it down...not a good start. The lad who then took our order looked like he was scared of his own shadow. Drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive - not sure why I couldn't be given a bottle of beer straight away, but there you go. When the paninis finally arrived, they had no idea what was in each panini and who had ordered what. It was a shambles and I can't fathom how something as simple as getting a few drinks and a few paninis on to a table has become so complicated to the staff at WTM. Watching them at work is like watching an episode of Fawlty Towers. To make matters worse, I then watched one of the girls working at WTM knock a display of caramel slices all over the floor and then proceed to pick them up OFF THE FLOOR and put them back on display for sale. This is an eatery with a 5 star hygiene rating...I suggest the inspectors do a surprise visit. The guy toasting the paninis was completely mauling them with his hands too. All this totally put me off and the food, although pleasant enough, then felt like it was going down in lumps.I won't be returning. I'm not interested in waiting nearly half an hour for an over handled posh toastie prepared by the Keystone Cops.

Four of us called in for a lunchtime snack but were disappointed by a number of features. Firstly, service was very slow and extremely disorganised. There was no urgency to ensure that food and drinks were ordered and delivered promptly and efficiently. Secondly, we were worried about standards of hygiene at the establishment. This was brought to our attention when some chocolate and caramel slices were dropped on the floor only to be picked up and added to those displayed and for sale on the counter. Such a shame because when our panninis arrived they were very tasty. However, overall, our experience was not one that we will be repeating!

The last two times we have visited we have had to wait an age for our coffee with others who arrived after us being served before us. Leigh on Sea is a pretty laid back place for eating and drinking and if you have the time to wait a while, then great. If 20 -30 minutes to get served does not fit your day, then steer clear.

Visited Went to Market a couple of times now. Good place to visit for a spot of lunch or a slice of cake and a coffee. They offer a good range of good quality products to purchase and have a deli where you can take away meats and cheese. The food is good overall and the coffee's are excellent. My only main complaint with this establishment is that they unexpectedly close early sometimes therefore if you travel out to eat specially I have found that on a couple of occasions they have been on wind down mode and as I was once told (quote) "Its been quiet in Leigh this afternoon so we've decided to shut early". Therefore, worth calling in advance especially on a Sunday. Don't let this put you off though...as its definitely worth a visit.

My daughters often come here with their nanny and I decided to visit a few weeks ago with my daughters ages 9 and 3. The place is child friendly with enough room to park our buggie and on one side there is a sideboard with colouring books and pencils and crayons to entertain kids. There are also newspapers for the adults. Food selection is good consisting of sandwiches and paninis etc, platters, salads, soup of the day, and a variety of snack food such as flavoured popcorns. There is beer, wine and soft drinks and also delicious milk shakes and of course coffees and teas. It is also very reasonably priced. I now take the girls there every other weekend when I have them. It is a nice set up and the food and drinks are of good quality. I will be going back.

The paninis are excellent, especially the brie, chicken and cranberry. It's a shame some of the customers seem unable to keep control of their children and the mess they make though as you have too either share one of 2 very large tables or perch on a ledge. Also all seating is on stools so none to comfortable, the high stools are particularly difficult to perch on, nowhere for your feet, nowhere for a bag to hang.

I've visited Went to Market a number of times, most recently November 2012. A small venue, with two large tables and bench seating, with bar stool seating along two walls, also outdoor seating on the pavement. A lovely selection of fillings for your choice of sandwich/panini etc, including plenty of vegetarian choice, some beautiful cakes and great coffee/tea selection. It is also cheaper than its rivals along The Broadway, but just as good quality. I also bought a lovely hamper of crackers, cheese and quinces last Christmas as a gift for a relative. The staff are polite, service swift and food tasty. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because there is no lavatory, it's is a real shame to have to go outside to use public toilets, especially in colder months :(

Lovely ambience and a friendly welcome. We were celebrating a birthday. Our two courses, of tomato soup, cheesy nachos with chilli, followed by fish and chips and grilled haddock with crushed new potatoes with a delightful lemony sauce were really delicious and nicely presented. The three staff who served us were helpful and attentive so all seemed absolutely perfect. To explain my only giving 3 stars is because very unfortunately, there was an overcharge on my bill, which I noticed after payment, and giving a refund led to a further error. All was sorted out eventually but not until hours later. Sincere apologies were given and accepted with a very generous and fair recompense, but sadly it could not dissipate the worry caused, which rather spoiled the day. I will in future alway check my bill carefully prior to payment!

Went for a Sunday roast with friends, one of them being a chef. The service was excellent and the food superb, my chef friend is very critical but he even commented on the quality of food and especially the roast potatoes. Watched Anthony Mouse afterwards, playing some great ska/reggae tunes. A fabulous Sunday, what a way to end the week.

I went to retry the house burger and it did not disappoint - rates in my top 5. Only draw back is you cannot have a medium rare patty however still an outstanding burger. Service is very good. Will go back!

Great restuarant...authentic.. lovely staff, ordered tapas, food was ok only let down was they didn't provide a finger bowl with the tapas, need to clean the fingers when picking food.. other than that a nice place to eat..
