1935 Roof top Restaurant in Southend-on-Sea

Lovely ambience and a friendly welcome. We were celebrating a birthday. Our two courses, of tomato soup, cheesy nachos with chilli, followed by fish and chips and grilled haddock with crushed new potatoes with a delightful lemony sauce were really delicious and nicely presented. The three staff who served us were helpful and attentive so all seemed absolutely perfect. To explain my only giving 3 stars is because very unfortunately, there was an overcharge on my bill, which I noticed after payment, and giving a refund led to a further error. All was sorted out eventually but not until hours later. Sincere apologies were given and accepted with a very generous and fair recompense, but sadly it could not dissipate the worry caused, which rather spoiled the day. I will in future alway check my bill carefully prior to payment!

Unfortunately not a good start booked Friday or so thought arrived no booking did find us a table plus but not we asked for having been previously we took people with us unfortunately food was cold was asked if porkbelly came with crackling it didn't but told it did shame as previously impressed

We visited the restaurant as both a birthday treat for my wife and for my son to watch the planes as he loves them. From start to finish our experience was made memorable and enjoyable by the warm and welcoming team who went above and beyond for us. They organised a table by the window for great views of the airport and decorated our table with birthday banners, confetti and a card for my wife then provided such friendly service throughout along with a delicious birthday brownie to make it extra special for us. The food was fantastic and we had a terrific time. We would definitely recommend and look forward to visiting again soon. Thank you!

I've been coming here for years and the service and food quality keeps changing. They have a new menu which looks great but I was so disappointed. I ordered a club sandwich and this must have been the worse sandwich I've ever had for this price. It was a joke. I wouldn't have paid more than £5 for it and this was £13. You guys need to get your act together, this is poor when there are so any other great places around.

Nice enough views (if a very quiet and empty airport is your thing) but truly: the dinner service here is abysmal. It feels as if the majority of the waiters are on work experience and don’t really know what they’re doing nor do they care to figure it out. The food is so-so. Slightly overpriced for what it is. My chicken supreme last night was roast chicken with hasselback potatoes. There was no supreme sauce nor any sauce for that matter. Necessity sometimes requires me to eat here but in all honesty it’s getting so bad I may have to have recourse to Uber Eats.

Had my 60th party last night with 25 family members, the place itself is amazing, the food was excellent, compliments to the chef, the service was quick and friendly, thanks Tyler and Abbie, and the pricing was brilliant, I will certainly return and recommend it to everyone, thanks to the team for a great meal.

Got a dinner here for me and my gf’s anniversary the food was PHENOMENAL however the service felt like it was a chore to serve us not be being picky this is comparing their service to my own at my own restaurant (this could of simply been a bad day for the team or something silly)

THIS RESTAURANT IS EXCELLENT, AS IS THE HOTEL, THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD, AND THE STAFF WERE SO HELPFUL, I ALSO ENJOYED A COOKED BREAKFAST THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHICH WAS BRILLIANT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL AND THE STAFF, WHO WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE ME FEEL WELCOME .

We came this Sunday for a 60th birthday meal. We had requested a window table but were seated elsewhere as all the windows were taken, waiter apologetic fair enough not a problem. It took ages for them to take our drinks order. Ages to receive the drinks. We had to ask to order our food. We asked if we could move to a window table when another table left which we did and that was good. I have to say the food (when we got it) was lovely. They advertise on their menu unlimited gravy but when you ask for more you get a tiny drizzle. To actually get someone’s attention to get more gravy is almost impossible. I don’t know why they highlight it as unlimited on the menu. It took almost half an hour for our plates to be cleared and we had to ask for the desert menu again trying to get someone’s attention was hard work. It all just felt like pulling teeth and I wouldn’t mind at all but the place was half empty!! Waitresses stood chatting to eachother absolutely impossible to get their attention. Not particularly friendly either. I work in this industry so I would never write a bad review for no reason. All they need to do it look up and just scan the room every now and then. Just a shame really as it’s such a good location. The man who seated us I don’t know his name, but he was absolutely lovely.

Staying overnight before a holiday flight, we enjoyed a lovely meal at a window table overlooking the airport. The food was very tasty and the service was spot on from all staff; our server Tyler was great. Would definitely eat here again when staying at the hotel.

Warm, flat soft drinks, ordered food, was told the first part of the 4 course comes out straight away. 20 mins later still nothing.. other tables that came after us got served before us, not impressed. Cancelled all food ordered.. I work in hospitality.

Anniversary celebrations ! Thought we would try somewhere different .. Awful experience service well there wasn't any ! .. disinterested staff looked miserable in their work .. standing chatting we had to catch their attention to order every course!! Couldn't wait to leave

Just went for a quick drink here. I wanted a mocktail but they did not officially do them so kind waitress did me a passion fruit martini without alcohol and we negotiated a price 🙂. Very attentive staff and good service. My friend ordered a pizza. Quick service but looked a bit dry. It was quite late when he ordered (10pm). He said it tasted nice though. Lovely view of airport but sat by window and heaters blasting out hot air were a bit uncomfortable for me being menopausal so I moved and sat further away. Bit more pricey than normal being a hotel and no competition around but would like to eat at main restaurant another time. Nobody eating time we went but bar was quite busy with guests.

Nice meal and good service at 1935, but beware if booking using 'The Fork' link. I cannot be certain, but after making a reservation using the link from 1935 - The Fork (French company), I was inundated with French spam and phishing emails written in French. My suspicion is that someone leaked my email address to a third party. I have requested my data be removed, but French spam keeps coming. I have reported to the ICO.

I visited the restaurant last night for my partners birthday surprise, we hired the boardroom at the back of the restaurant which can I add I paid £100 to hire the room. The service wasn’t great at all, the staff come across as though they haven’t been trained to do their job, being someone that has worked in this industry and visited many times whilst the previous chef and staff were there - I think it has gone very down hill. The food was absolutely diabolical, I was completely shocked at how bad it has actually got since the previous chef Mickey has left. I complained about the food and nothing was done, the staff didn’t seem bothered in the slightest that they had received a complaint. Our bill came to £900 being 14 of us which was not deserved in the slightest. I actually feel ashamed to of taken my friends there, if I had known how much the restaurant had gone downhill I wouldn’t have gone back. We will not be retuning.

I ordered the chicken and ham pie which came with one tiny broccoli floret. I asked for more, and was told that the chef was preparing it, but it never arrived. No explanation, it just didn't turn up, and after about 15 minutes I couldn't be bothered to ask again as I'd finished my meal. I then had sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It was a small piece of sponge, with no sauce, which resembled something from the school dinner counter. There were a lot of us (25) but the gaps between courses was also ridiculous. An hour between mains and dessert. I had a lovely evening with friends, but won't be returning to this restaurant.

We came on their valentines package and have been blown away. The views from the bar and restaurant are amazing if you love watching the comings and goings at an airport. The menu was very good and the quality of the food was outstanding, through every course. The waiter did tell us the menu was extra special for the occasion but they were hoping soon to bring the whole of their menu up a level to match what we had that day. So watch this space

This was for a 40th birthday. The staff were friendly and professional at all times. They ensured we all had what we needed and the food was really good value for money. The burgers were home made and really tasty, kids meals were great value for money. The vegetarian curry was so tasty. The only negative was the turkey sandwich, tasted lovely but was soggy underneath so would stand on end so it stays crunchy. The pot of tea was great value and it just kept giving and stayed hot. The deserts were just as good. The view was amazing over the airport. Would definitely recommend

Great rooftop restaurant very comfi seats over looking at the airport and the planes taking off and landing through their large windows. We had a lovely meal for our grandparents 69th anniversary there the menu was varied from comfort food to more grastro options all very well prepared and presented and of good quality. The team was attentive and friendly the manager Simon runs a smooth operations there we very must enjoyed our evening and will be back. Thank you.

Lovely food, particularly the roasts! Unfortunately let down by the terrible service. It was painfully slow! We were essentially ignored the whole time - had to wave the staff over for absolutely everything, and ask for absolutely everything, including children's menus. We were never asked if we wanted any more drinks and ended up going to the bar to order, where we overheard the staff joking about how bored they were. Only about 20% of the tables were taken, so they were not busy at all. Really disappointing.

Just returned home from having a delicious Christmas lunch with 3 friends. Starters was a very tasty prawn cocktail. Main was turkey with all the trimmings and cooked to perfection I have to add.... my compliments to the chef!! The service was extremely good. The waitress was very pleasant and cheerful. Nothing was too much to ask. The venue was amazing ... clean and airy with beautifully decorated Christmas trees. The atmosphere was very calm with a good view of the airport. This was my first visit to the 1930 Restaurant and I would certainly recommend to friends and family. Thank you for a very pleasant time and happy Christmas to you all xx

My husband and I ate here whilst staying at the Holiday Inn (the restaurant is on the 5th floor of the hotel) for a business meeting he needed to attend. The restaurant overlooks the runway of Southend Airport and as darkness falls the lights of the airport shine. It certainly was an unusual place to eat dinner and watch a couple of private aircraft and a flight from Portugal arrive. The food was delicious, service excellent from the waitresses who were attentive but not overbearing and the usual menu was enhanced by a 'specials' selection. We ate breakfast here too and although we're not particular fans of buffet service all the hot food was delicious and frequently added to with freshly cooked food.

I wish I took a photo of the fish of the day on bed of rocket, cherry tomatoes and balsamic....which was actually on a pathetic bed of iceberg lettuce colourless salad tomatoes and no balsamic vinegar insight. It was pathetic and only the fish resembled anything advertised. And want to charge £18. Chef should be embarrassed and clearly taking the the rise out of people. Unexceptional.

Best Sunday Roast I had with friends and family at Rochford Holiday Inn. Attention, Willingness to please and making Customers happy is possibly the best ever example of Customer service experienced. Thanks Rohit for an amazing and special treatment we had, thoroughly enjoyed.

5 star restaurant,I was surprised how good it is

Arrived just before 1pm, waited around 10-15 mins for a member of staff. Ordered a burrito, told we couldn't have one, just sandwiches, then ordered a glass of white wine and was told there wasn't any. But the sandwiches were nice and a great view, though £34.75 for 2 sandwiches, a red wine and a flat white coffee was a little steep.

Had rib eye steak which was not nice at all. Asked for medium and it came out rare. The steak itself was full of sinew... Breakfast on the other hand was good and this is the saving grace for the restaurant

Sunday roast menu very nice and the food was delicious. The service was a complete let down, not once was we asked if we wanted any drinks, when we finally got someone I asked for a wine menu to be told they did not have one. I then asked for a bottle of their red wine to find out At the end that the bottle was actually £50! (By the way the retail price of this bottle was £13) Terrible service, lovely food!

The menu was limited pre book when we got there they gave us another menu so we changed our minds. The food was average. Fish n chips inedible fish dry. The prices are way more than we would pay. far more greenery on the plate than actual meat or fish on the starters not a place I would go to again. Far better food and cheaper in our local.

So 6 of our group stayed at your hotel 23/1/22-28/1/22 and we are back here for 30/1/22-4/2/22. We were really excited to come back but once we arrived on the 30th we got told (even though we booked a table and got told that roasts...

Just had the worst experience in hospitality ... never again ... booked for Christmas day's meal in the fifth floor,in restaurant no one to greet you or to acknowledge your arrival ...or even to ask if we are the guests or staying there ... Christmas atmosphere was minimal not even Christmas music however sat at the table we've had what they called a shot tasteless and cold what appeared to be butternut squash in a thimble ..the starter arrived shortly after, three scallops the size of ten pence and bacon Larden again cold and as we've had to order well in advance we couldn't remember what we've ordered as when we did the receptionist could not print a copy for us ... however every table had a little card with the name of the guests and what they've ordered but not ours the waiter brought his own list which it had only our names and nothing of what we've ordered . Come to the main course I've had the lamb which was ok but the portion was small to my liking .. my partner had the fish and again I was told it was warmish and had no taste whatsoever she left most of it, the restaurant was cold most people had their jackets on and again no Christmas atmosphere whatsoever ..we were just glad to have the dessert ( Apple pie ) so we can leave ... for almost £180 it's was a nightmare of a Christmas meal . Never again ... disgusting...I thought we will be eating and drinking and have a great time... how wrong I was

Went for lunch on Boxing Day with the family .. had a child and a baby too… the manager was truly amazing! Couldn’t do enough for us .. from sorting the table to the food to the lovely kids gift bag! Even with no planes...

In response to my previous negative review, when I was refused a window table, the management replied positively and assured me that a window table would be made available. I accordingly lunched there recently with good results. The menu is not large but quite adequate...
