We stayed one night this week in this little Gem of a place. We arrived and were warmly welcomed as was the dog We were booked into the restaurant Rooms are up the stairs in the main restaurant, if you don’t want to drag your luggage through the restaurant, go check in first and they’ll direct you the residents door to the side of the building and you can bring your luggage through that way. Room 8 is the corner room with the balcony as you look directly at the building. The room is small but more than adequate. Super clean. Theres extra pillows and a blanket along with a fan and hair dryer. The tea tray was well stocked with tea coffee biscuits. The bathroom has hand wash and body wash in the shower. It’s a compact bathroom but fits its purpose. The balcony is small and has a set of chair and a table. Perfect for a morning cuppa and enjoy the lovely scenery. Now let’s get to the food. On the evenings you will be seated in the bar section if you have a dog. But breakfast you can take them to eat in the restaurant section We ordered a special burger 🍔 and a pork chop. Both were absolutely delicious. Nothing was left on our plates. For breakfast we ordered 2 x full English breakfast. These didn’t disappoint. I’d give it the best full English I’ve ever had. Set us both up for the long day in the lakes we had ahead. Very lovely small pub and amazing food. Highly recommend if you are looking for somewhere to stay or somewhere to eat if you’re in the area

We have spent four consecutive evenings in this brilliant pub and enjoyed nice drinks and excellent food. We were made so welcome by everyone and will definitely visit again on our return to the area in the summer of 2025. A special mention must go to the lovely Grace who ensured that we were well looked after and also Izzy, Abbie and Bailey who were instrumental in making our visit a memorable experience. Thankyou and love and best wishes..Ian & Jayne Smith..Bless you.

I’m genuinely torn with this one.. because the bed was comfy, the room was clean..ish, the shower was powerful, and breakfast was lovely.. so ordinarily that would enough for me. But this place just wasn’t right (for me) the rooms are sub standard very dated and grubby looking. I found the pub area of the accommodation a bit shabby, and poorly staged, although where breakfast was served was more in keeping with the property. But the biggest let down for me was the unfriendliness, absolutley no one was rude, they just weren’t engaging, it felt like almost everyone I encountered did not want to be there, which in turn made me not want to be there.

I like this place. Up in the Lakes for the day and Windermere is very busy. I regularly use Trip Advisor to scout out those places that ae not always on the route I am taking and I found this place. The food is excellent, the staff are equally as excellent and efficient. It has lovely decor and the car park was pretty easy to find a space in. Hopefully we will be back again on the not to distant future.

Enjoyed 2 evenings here during our weeks holiday. Great food, imaginative options for veggies and also lots of gluten free options. Very tasty and cooked to order. My husband really liked their own beers and worked his way through several different ones. His favourite was 'little black dog'. Bought some beers to take home too. I enjoyed several of the different gins including their own gin from their little distillery. The beer garden is a pleasant sun trap in the evening and has fabulous views. Staff were helpful and friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

We went and stayed at a cottage in Ings from 19th May until 26th May. The cottage was very comfortable and clean. We went to the Watermill Inn for dinner twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. We went around the lakes, we went to Ullswater and to Pooley Bridge, and had afternoon tea sitting outside. We went to the Hare and Hounds in Levens again it was very busy but they managed to fit us in. When we went to Bo'ness on the Friday before we came home it was very busy. We as a family would go back to the area.

My wife and I disagree how to rate the Watermill. She says, four stars. Her argument is that its a nice enough pub, but not exceptional. She has not tasted the beer. I have.I say - the food is good, at the top of pub food with just the right level of gastro. The atmosphere is great, and the location sits at the end of some great walks. And then there is the beer. Brewed onsite, it demonstrates everything good about Lakeland brewing - bold, warming, flavoursome ales that sit nicely with food or on their own. The Dog'th Vader is, alongside the Black Bull's Old Man ale, my favourite beer going. If you have no place to be, Shi'Tzu Faced is a lovely strong beer, and Golden Retriever is a top quality light beer. Go here!

Came for lunch today looking forward to a hearty tasty meal to warm us from the cold weather. On arrival there were no bar staff to be seen. We were not sure whether we had to wait to be seated or just sit down. We decided to get a table which was when the waitress told us to order when ready. There were no menus given to us so we asked for some to be very bluntly told "they are there by the fire". We ordered a sea bass meal and a chicken meal which we had to wait 45 minutes for! On a very quiet monday. The food was good but the service lacked. Waitress behind the bar was very miserable and the other waitress had flour all over her black uniform and was constantly fidgeting with her hair and face which was quite offputting when being served food... kitchen door was left open so all we could hear was boystrous chefs shouting, swearing and singing stupid things throughout the meal which I did not find amusing. The hot chocolate tasted of water and not chocolately at all and £2.50 for frozen onion rings I found quite discusting. Would of complained but no staff were to be seen while we ate and nobody asked us how everything was. Will not be in a hurry to come back!

This is always a good place for lunch or dinner. We eat here whenever we are visiting my native Cumbria. There is an extensive menu including (mushroom free!) options for vegetarians and the produce are sourced locally. The staff are welcoming, the service is prompt and the food is always good. There are daily specials on a board by the bar in each room. There is also an onsite brewery with the dog themed brews. You can also buy bottles of their beer to take away and it is also on draft along with beers from other breweries (including local Cumbrian ones). Sometimes there is live music in the evening. Two things to note: It gets busy here and they don't take reservations and also parking can be difficult when it gets busy. There is a small car park and you can also park on the lanes around the pub.

We had our dog with us and we were all made so welcome by all the staff, we could eat inside the pub with our dog as well as outside, which we favoured due to the nice weather we had. Breakfast was great with plenty of options. The food throughout the day and evening was superb. It's location makes everywhere accessible by car, it is also on a bus route. Early morning and late evening dog walk on the doorstep and you can walk as far as you like on public foot paths and bridle ways. But to top it all for those real ale lovers (I'm partial to one or two my self) they brew their own ale! I recommend collie wobble a light smooth beer full of flavour! I happened to be in Windermere a few weeks ago during what a few locals said was the busiest day of the year. I decided to spend my tourist dollars on less touristy matters and took a cheap bus from the rail station for about 2.50 to Ings. It was perhaps a 5 minute bus ride and the walk was less than 3 minutes to the pub for a Saturday lunch. My wife and I were joined only by two other couples throughout the pub--a great respite from the overwhelming crowds! The service was fast as expected, and the staff were helpful and lovely. The pub is picturesque on the outside and quaint on the inside. The nachos were fantastic, great amount of spice and a lovely portion of guac. Beers were quite good, especially the lager. The adult mains were good, however, we were really disappointed by the both children's meals. Firstly, the burger was just a very dry lump of mince in a dry bun, the chips were fine and baked beans looked like some sort of tomato sauce as there were literally a few beans in a small pot of bean juice. Secondly, the pizza was not a freshly made base but a rock hard shop-bought base with a bit of tomato topping and cheese - my son gave up trying to eat it as it was so hard (looking at the menu now, it says Pizza Baguette - it certainly wasn't a baguette but I don't know whether the menu's changed in the last two weeks, either way, it was barely edible). We had high hopes for the Watermill and the adult meals were good but, overall, we were left really disappointed - the children's meals are just as important as the adults' for those of us with children so why not ensure fresh, high quality meals are served throughout?!Finally, the card machine wouldn't connect repeatedly so after three attempts over the course of about 10 minutes, a manual card machine had to be fetched to allow us to pay and leave.

We use to eat here quite often but since the floods this is the first time we've been in. We ordered two starters and two main meals, one of the starters was tempura prawns, unfortunately the oil these were cooked in needed changing; the side salad, one slice of cucumber and a half of cherry tomato with a few soaked salad leaves felt like an after thought. The main courses didn't fair much better The Watermill chicken had clearly been sat for a while before it was brought to the table as the sauce had congealed, the mash potato was very dry. I had the lamb steak which was raw in the middle, the carrots were like water and tasteless, the broccoli was also raw. The so called roast potatoes were new potatoes that had been deep fried probably in the same oil as the tempura prawns as the taste of old oil was evident. Not sure why the quality of food has changed so much the refurbished bar looks great but we wont rush back for the food.

We have always wanted to try this pub and today was the day. They have up to 16 real ales, so as to say they are over hopped might be just the 2 some one tried. We found if you told the staff what you like they pointed you out a beer. My self and wife had 3 pints each and found them lovely. We found the staff polite and had no problems with them. Food was excellent I could not eat all mine so would not have a starter next time. So we would stop here again.

been today for lunch have not been for a few years so thought I would give it a try. The food was average setting is beautiful sat out the back in the sun. But what I thought was terrible was one of the bar staff serving an elderly gentleman asked him which larger he would like and after no more than 10 seconds said to her work colleague he is having becks I haven't got time for this it will be Christmas by the time he tells me!! Now I was stood next to him and clearly heard her and she then looked at me and started laughing !! A little more respect for your customers would be a good idea being that they pay your wages not to mention a little more respect for the elderly after all he simply may not of heard you. I won't hurry back.

The beer here is always in good condition but the staff should wear cleaner clothes and not pick at their face or worse whilst serving food...several customers were laughing at this rather obvious unprofessionalism. The missed opportunity here is the beer, This time I had the Watermill mild and Darth Vader and both were clearly over-hopped. I suggest the brewer goes down the road to Hawkeshead brewery and experiences how all of their beers have clear distinct flavours and they always taste exactly the same. Better still recruit the brewer from Hawkeshead and be amazed.

We visited this pub whilst on our holidays in Windermere. The service and food were great, I was surprised at how big the child portion was. Overall great value for money, we would definitely recommend.

Really enjoyed this dog friendly pub. Stayed overnight as well (see separate review!) Enjoyed sampling the real ales and the food was really tasty, good pub grub. Lots of dogs in the River bar all made welcome. Staff really friendly and helpful. Lovely atmosphere. Our friends usually go in winter when there's a real fire going so I will be returning!

Not been here for a while but it hadn't changed a bit. The staff were very welcoming and polite we just had a light lunch but the food was of very good quality and good size portions. Will not leave it so long before our next visit. Definitely recommend.

Ate here twice whilst in the Lake District. Good pub grub. Only complaint was perhaps portions too big!

We'd planned an early evening meal here before driving back to Lancashire, but having had a larger lunch than expected, carefully inspected the starter menu to treat as mains, while sipping sherry or enjoying one of the house beers (according to gender!) That resulted in us ordering two seafood platters and two baked Camemberts (again split by gender.) Starters? we couldn't have eaten a main course after either of these. OK, the baked Camembert did have a menu note 'ideal for sharing' but it would have done as a starter between all four if we were intending to eat anything else. Both dishes were completely excellent, and we would order them again. This pub restaurant deserves its excellent reputation both for food and the sheer range of beers. We always call here when we are in this area. It is difficult to see how we could possibly do better elsewhere.

Met up with some old friends a week past. Chose here for lots of reasons.Choice of beer was good and I'm pleased I went with the barman' choice.Service was really friendly and understanding. The food however was thrown together, in a truly careless manner. Cumbrian skillet (sausage and black pudding cos that's where we were) was nearly floating in oil ??...Fish was tiny probably should have been thrown back...Caesar salad was heavy on dressing. Maybe the wrong day. But won't be back to find out.More care and all will be well.

Visited this pub and restaurant on a Wednesday evening we were out shopping and thought we would eat out instead of having to cook when we got home. We had passed the Watermill a number of times when going to Windermere and had often said we should call there. I had looked at the reviews and a lot of them seemed positive. My husband had the steak and ale pie which he said was ok. I had the fish and chips, I asked for lightly battered as I always do when having fish and chips as sometimes there can be too much batter. When my meal arrived there was a lot of batter clearly not lightly battered, also it was almost burnt. It was a case of spot the fish within the batter. The cost of this was £10.95. I could not believe that there was so little fish. I have had fish and chips in other local pubs and restaurants and paid less and had better. I found the food nothing special. I did complain on the lack of fish. The waitress came to ask if everything was ok but it was half way through the meal she said did I want another order but my husband was eating his meal and by the time a replacement would have been brought out he would have finished. She returned to the table after a couple of minutes and offered a complimentary coffee at the end of my meal. I decided not to accept as I did not really want a coffee after my meal so when another waitress came and said is everything ok I advised her that I had already told the other waitress and said not to bother with the coffee. I went to pay the bill and the staff were stood around chatting and not really taking much notice of the fact I wanted to pay my bill. Nothing was said about my complaint, no apology at all. In my view this was not good customer service and I will not be returning.

A proper pub as opposed to a restaurant pub so it has comfortable bars and a good range of drinks including their brewed beer. Good wide range of food but although they offer gluten free only one main course is GF. If they offer GF the range should be wider although in fairness they can(and did) adapt a dish to GF

My partner and I wanted to stay at a place that had a brewery attached; as beer home brewers and beer nerds it had to happen. I was pleased with the food, breakfast especially (included in price). Not all that impressed with the beer. The room was very comfortable. It sloped toward the street, and the linoleum was bubbling in places, but very clean and modern. All the staff were lovely, except one bar girl.

Lovely traditional pub with big open fire and welcoming staff. Brewery on site that produces some fantastic beers. Ordered food whilst we were there, which was okay but we have had far better for a similar price in the local area.

I was staying nearby with my partner and we ate here one evening after driving past earlier in the day on our way to Windermere. It was a very wet and windy night which we arrived, so was glad to get inside to a warm and cosy bar area. The menu had a very good selection - I had the veg cannelloni with garlic bread, and my partner had the beef and ale pie with chips and veg. Both meals were very tasty and just what we needed after a long day exploring the lakes. We also overheard a lot of people complimenting the food whilst we were there. My partner was impressed with the pub's own brewed beer selection. I had creme brulee for dessert - a good sized portion and a delicious end to the meal. There are two bars - we went in the one on the right as you enter the building. The bar was operating a tab system whereby you were given a swipe card for any additional drinks/ food orders. Would definitely eat here again, and recommend to friends and family.

we went here last night. I had steak and ale pie with chips and veg and couldn't fault anything. The pie was incredibly tasty and the chips were very good indeed. My husband had the fish and chips and again he couldn't fault it. Service was very good without being over-bearing. Unfortunately we just didn't have room for pudding!

We looked online for a couple of dog friendly pubs in the area while going to Windermere and this came up as one of the closest to us so gave it a shot....It is so nice to get a friendly welcome in any pub you haven't visited before and everyone here is certainly friendly and welcoming. Staff great, lovely girl who had biscuits for the dogs and all the patrons very nice, smiling and saying hello. We only had a couple of pints and no food as other plans but will definitely return and try the food another time but would highly recommend this place for a friendly pint and superb selection of beers on tap some of whch they brew on the premises and have awards dotted around the place for it.Excellent!! thanks and see you again soon.

I spent a lot of time here as a kid and still come back now and again as an adult. The atmosphere is great and the staff are always really friendly and chatty. The food is on the whole average although the BBQ ribs I had last visit were amazing. It is often very busy so sometimes you have to wait for tables but its worth it for a nice filling meal.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

My husband and I were staying at the nearby county hotel and decided to call in for a coffee on the way into the shopping area. The coffee was great and the millionaires slice was lovely. Service was very good.
