Really lovely little place with friendly staff. But unfortunately coffee was really weak. Also the Fanny’s deconstructed breakfast is very underwhelming, it’s a box with two tiny bits of bread, half an avocado and a boiled egg cut in half. The food is overpriced for what you get. Shame as it’s a nice place and the staff are great.

Took my family here last Saturday as a treat. I was so shocked with the service. I would have left had my aunty not already started ordering. I felt completely embarrassed at the image this place left my family of the area. The server was so cold and rude. Could barely be bothered to talk to us let alone serve us. He obviously thought he was above being a server. He spoke to us as if we were idiots for asking what cakes there were. I’ve lived in the area for 12 years and will not be coming back.

Ordinary-looking and unassuming pastries and cakes sold at the price of a high-end patisserie that offers state-of-the-art, intricate creations—did I just see a bread pudding (!) for £11?! With so many great bakeries in the area and beyond, I've never seen such prices.

Violet was pretty buzzing on a Sunday afternoon. Huge selection of delicious looking cakes, great presentation. A bit pricier than other similar places I felt. My rhubarb cupcake was good and had a piece of rhubarb on top but would have hoped for the pink icing to be flavoured and to have more rhubarb flavour. The cinnamon bun pudding was good and served warm, £12 though is steep. The brunch menu did look great. All in all, worth a visit you’ll have some gorgeous food but will be on the upper end of price for these types of places. Service was very good.

I'm so disappointed with the customer service I recently received from this bakery which I used to love. In short, I ordered a cake for my husband's birthday and was given the wrong cake. I didnt realise until I got home because it was the wrong filling inside the cake, and neither of us like the filling we were given. Management confirmed they had accidentally given me the wrong cake. They agreed to give me a partial refund for the error, but said they "cannot offer a refund for the whole cake" and that they "hope I understand thay cakes are extremely expensive to make and we have a strict refund policy because of this". I paid £70 (£45 after the partial refund!) for a cake I could not eat because I didn't like the flavour, because they gave me a flavour I did not order. I honestly can't believe that the business treats their regular customers like this, penalising them for their own mistakes. I feel silly for supporting the business as I have over the years and won't be back. Cannot recommend after this experience.

I got a slice of Earl Grey Bergamot cake, and for £9, I expected it to be the best cake of my life. I was so disappointed. The cake felt like it had been sitting in the display window for a while—the icing was very dry and tasted like pure sugar with some artificial flavoring. It was nearly impossible to eat. I had to scrape it all off—or rather, it practically fell off in one piece because the icing was so dry. But the weirdest part was when I asked if the cake contained nuts (because my partner is allergic, and I wanted to know if it would be safe for him to try). The person working at the bakery looked at the cake and said “I assume it doesn't have nuts”. What do you mean you assume 🫠 Save your money, it’s not worth it.

Their Christmas cake is worth five stars on its own. Absolutely delicious I can't get it out of my mind. The flavours are decadent, and when you slice into it the liquor notes really come out. The layer of marzipan is a wonderful touch. I also bought some of their mince pies, which were delicious though a bit pricey for its portions. They are pretty mini compared to your typical mince pies sizes at that price Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The location is more of a takeaway with some outdoor seating. Honestly, don't miss out on their festive menu!

I love their cheese scones. The other day, I decided to buy a birthday cake for my wife’s birthday. The “Earl Grey Bergamot Cake” didn’t taste like either Earl Grey or bergamot. It tasted more like a Sainsbury’s “Taste the Difference” cake. The icing was far too sweet, and my guests had to scrape it off. I paid £68, which felt like a bit of a waste of money. I love their small bakes, but I definitely don’t recommend their birthday cakes.

I’ve always been a fan of their cinnamon bund and small bakes—they’re consistently delightful. For my birthday, my husband bought me the 'Earl Grey Bergamot Cake,' and while it looked stunning, it didn’t deliver on taste. It didn’t have the distinct flavors of Earl Grey or bergamot and instead reminded me of a supermarket cake. The icing was far too sweet; most of my guests ended up scraping it off. I still love their small bakes, but I wish their cakes tasted as good as they look

Yes it is expensive but so is everything now, skilled bakers should make money. Cookies are yummy nice dark choc for people like me who don’t like too much sweetness. Edited review from 3 years ago. As much as the cakes are great, delicious and the decorations look aestetically fresh, I am disappointed with the lack of flexibility of altering the cake and poor service for cancelling my cake order very short notice before landing in London. I understand that this is a business and preparing food requires preparations but the lack of flexibility from the team In making exceptions is what makes the overall experience unpleasant. As delicious as these cakes are with their icings and flavours, the bad taste in the mouth is left with the poor service. I mentioned this last time on my review here too.

I asked for another slice of toast and got charged another £2 for half a slice of unbuttered toast. £17 in total 😳. Seems a bit excessive. Cheese and ham toastie wasn’t great either @£15 I would have thought it might come with a side of something (more than the 4 mini cornichons it came with) . We sat in but everything was served in takeaway packaging. Usually love everything here but my experience of their savoury goods wasn’t nearly as good as their cakes, which I don’t think get better.

Run, don't walk, AWAY. NOT WORTH IT unless you enjoy places that are only for Instagramming, without much actual care for food or experience. 5 GBP for a small cupcake. 9 GBP for a slice of cake. 5 GBP for a latte 7 GBP for "Fran's breakfast" which was two small pieces of almost-burnt bread, a cold pre-cooked egg, and half and avocado served in a paper box. These are Times Square prices people. Also what is depressingly too much like American places: - ONLY single use take-away - Plastic cups for water - The payment screen asks you for a service charge, when you are essentially handed take-away cups. I am happy to pay service, when you actually can dine-in properly. There are so many cafés in London that are still actual cafés. This is not one of them.

Violet Cakes ruined my wedding day. Never have I experienced such a lack of care, due diligence or empathy from a company. I ordered my wedding cake and cupcakes from Violet Cakes. A week before the wedding, I emailed to confirm the order and let the staff know that two of my friends would be collecting on the day. Violet Cakes confirmed my order, but on the day, my wedding cake was no where to be seen. They had packaged up the cupcakes but omitted the star of the show. They also assured the people collecting that the entire order was there. After calling the company on my wedding day multiple times, I finally got through to the founder on instagram. My emails and calls remained unanswered. I ended up with no wedding cake. The week after, I reached out to them again via email to sort a refund. In the week between the wedding and my follow up, they had not attempted to contact me to apologise. When I finally got a response, I was told it was my fault for not specifically informing the company that it was a wedding cake, as I had bought one of their “celebration cake”. They then reluctantly offered me a refund. This felt like the bare minimum compensation for the disruption they had caused. I asked if I could be fully compensated for my order, and that was denied. I was not offered any other form of apology, or a voucher. Although I understand mistakes happen, I took every care before the day to ensure the order would be fulfilled. I’ve been so disappointed by the service and their lack of empathy afterwards, that I could never recommend buying with this company.

It's the same old story: a place opens to a lot of hype, gradually declines over the years and eventually becomes an overpriced tourist trap. Sadly that's what happened to Violet's. £6 for a terrible brownie. Brownies are meant to be chewy, this one didn't even seem baked. Eat-in cake and coffee, you'll get it in a paper cup. Where is the service? No consistency, they often sell out of basic things like cake slices. You never know what you'll be able to buy. Tourists seek authenticity, without the local customers and community they won't come. Sadly locals just roll their eyes at Violet's now.

**A Disappointing Experience** I had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately, my visit was disappointing, and I wouldn’t recommend it for anything other than a quick coffee to-go. I ordered the eggs on toast with avocado, but what I got was a laugh. The dish consisted of a single boiled egg, half an avocado, and a few tiny pieces of cheese. I think the pictures speaks for itself. This came on a plastic plate and was priced for a good £8. It felt like an overpriced, underwhelming meal, considering the actual cost of the ingredients was likely less than £1.50. To make matters worse, the service was equally disappointing. After standing in line, we finally sat down and were presented with plastic plates, which didn't match the vibe I expected from a bakery that seemed so popular. After finishing our food, I politely asked the waitress if she could take our plates back, but she just pointed to a bin in the corner and instructed us to dispose of them ourselves. Not exactly what I'd call friendly or helpful service. On a positive note, the coffee was decent, which is likely why the place had a queue. However, if you’re looking for a good lunch or exceptional service, this bakery isn't the place to go. They might be better off sticking to coffee and cupcakes, or they seriously need to rethink their lunch menu and train their staff to be more customer-focused.

The staff was wonderfully kind and easy to talk to — especially Paul — and made us feel super welcome in the area. It’s a bit of a new wave cafe and its prices reflect that, but they have Aesop soap in the bathroom so that checks out. Food was good but wishing we tried more from their confectionery baked goods section since that definitely seems to be their specialty

Big fan of violet! Some feedback from my latest visit. I know the halva brownie is supposed to be gooey but I felt the one I had went too far into raw and overly oily territory. I also loved that violet did a regular sized latte that was nice and milky. I noticed the size has changed to the smaller size which makes for a stronger tasting latte, which personally I think is a shame! Everywhere else does these tiny lattes, I loved going to violet cos I know you did the bigger size. Anyway big love

Unbelievably special place in london. If you are looking for somewhere unique and with independent village vibes. Violet’s is it! They cook their cakes in house and you can watch them baking away while dining on delicious baked goods and wonderful coffee. They have seating outside which is perfect for sunny London days.

Fabulous and successful staple of Hackney however they need to work on a few things! The baked goods are good but their gluten free options are extremely limited and quite unpleasant to eat. They used to have a nice indoor seating area upstairs but they’ve gotten rid of that, which is a real shame. Employees are generally friendly but service can be (in my view) unnecessarily slow. In terms of being a good corporate citizen, I’d like to see Violet put both a BLM and an LGBTQ+ inclusion sticker on their window to show allyship with marginalised communities. I’d also like to know what local charities Violet supports. Can this information be elegantly displayed somewhere inside the bakery for customers to read? Regarding payments, a big problem for me is: when you pay by card, there’s no visible price on the iPad screen to show how much you’re paying; as a result, I always have to ask the cashier to tell me. If Violet isn’t going to put the cost of the transaction on a screen, then the store needs to train cashiers to say out loud “that’ll be £10.50” or whatever the price is. When you are prompted to pay, the only thing that appears on the payment iPad is a prompt to add tip. How can I add a percentage tip if I don’t even know how much my transaction costs? On the note of tipping, why am I being asked to subsidise the Violet employees’ salaries when the business is on record saying that part of the reason why their products are so expensive is because they pay their employees a “proper” wage (alongside their use of premium ingredients, etc)? One last point regarding sustainability: Violet offers free water to its customers (rightly so!) but the disposable cups they use are made from high-specification plastic which is simply a total waste. If Violet wants to use disposable plastic cups (instead of paper), they should use the *thinnest* plastic cups available to ensure minimal plastic waste wis produced. I get that Violet wants to position itself as a ‘designer’ bakery, but not everything needs to be premium. It’s a disposable water cup; it doesn’t need to be “Five Star” glossy/thick plastic. Just get thin plastic cups which are easier to recycle and which take up less space in bins, please!! Also, I think it would be reasonable to keep the disposable cups behind the counter so customers have to ask for them, rather than just having them next to the water dispenser (where overly consumeristic hipsters just end up mindlessly taking cups of water for the “sake of it” and don’t even drink it). On the note of bins, Violet’s bins (outside the patio door) are also very unclear as to which one is for general waste versus recycling waste. Violet needs to step up its game when it comes to sustainability!

Tried their chocolate cupcake with violet buttercream. The chocolate devil’s food cupcake was moist with deep chocolate flavor, not too sweet. The buttercream, however, was overly sweet and grainy - evidently an American buttercream with way too much powdered sugar. Shame they don’t use a meringue buttercream.

My family ordered a birthday cake for me from Violet, it was a chocolate sponge with a white buttercream - and the best cake I have ever tasted. Everyone who tried some was amazed! Will definitely order occasion cakes again and can't wait to come in store.

It’s become a tradition to get one of my BFFs a chocolate bubble cake for her birthday - we all swoon (it’s the best most nostalgic and new at once cake I’ve ever tasted), 23 sing the virtues of Violet and the birthday girl now collects the custom banners - and we do it all again the next year. As long as there are birthdays I hope we always have the option of celebrating this way. This year they brought the cake straight to my door on a particularly busy day, turning up on time, on short notice with a smile and a laugh. Run don’t walk and maybe you’ll find a new tradition of your own!

We ordered a small wedding cake for our civil wedding and it was beautiful, probably one of the yummiest cakes we’ve ever had. It was a violet chocolate cake, and the office manager helpfully suggested leaving off fresh flower decorations in case they wilted slightly in the time between me picking up the cake and serving it. So I added a peony myself from my own garden which was perfect. The cake was expensive but worth it for this special occasion. Thank you Violet!

Your cake we had delivered for our 2 yr old’s birthday this past weekend was just to die for and made his, our’s, and everyone’s day! I have been a fan since day 1, no other bakery comes close. Lots of love to the whole Violet crew. We love everything you do, which is always beautiful and delicious x

A fancy bakery in the residential neighbourhood near Dalston. Ordered the rose madeleines and espresso cupcakes which were good. They are sweet and flavourful so try and pair them with bitter coffee. The chocolate loaf with rum and salted caramel that I had to take home though. That was heaven in a loaf. Moist and rich chocolate cake topped with a deep, bold, golden cream. Just one day and I have almost finished my loaf.

Me and my friends were in the area and we thought we would give this cafe a go for a quick coffee and cake (friends are big cake enthusiasts so any opportunity) Really disappointing quality of cake. Everything is just so…dry! Generally underwhelming. Lack of flavour, texture and missing the oomph that you’d expect. Not a patch on some other independent bakeries that are around the area which is where we will be going. Staff seem to look down on you and there seemed to be an awkward atmosphere, as if they didn’t want to be there and we were a nuisance. Coffee tasted alright though.

Best cakes hands down. Mouthwatering, and just tastes like heaven. I was involved in the redesign of the bakery and safe to say that I am now officially converted to their California style cakes. I even go the extra mile and order them via deliveroo when I am feeling lazy.

Over the top prices for an overated product. Good, sure, but not excellent to justify the bonkers prices. And beware the cake sizes, they are tiny! And the staff feel like they are doing you a favor for serving you or retrieving your order. No thank you.

Came here for a friends 35th birthday party last weekend. The room was pretty packed, but there is a small beer garden out the back for overspill. Friendly bar staff and eclectic selection of drinks. Good value too. Place needs a proper sign outside it though - very easy to walk past. I wouldn't travel from out of area just to get to this place, but it was fun all the same.

El "Fox reformada" está en el corazón de la bulliciosa Stoke Newington Church Street. He conocido el pequeño pub durante muchos años.
