Went for a family meal, was told it was close to closing time but they'd serve us. However, they kept rushing for us to order, and when the food turned up it was almost thrown on the table, they were obviously trying to hurry us along. The food was unattractive, as if they'd emptied the top layer of the bin. One of our party ordered a vegetarian dish, another ordered a chicken dish. They were identical with the exception of a couple of chicken strips across the top of one plate. Staff were rude, pushy, and not what I'd have expected from a small restaurant. We may have southern accents, but we live in the North East and have done for many years. Therefore don't assume we're just visitors and it doesn't matter what you serve us, it should and does matter. Suffice to say, we're not planning another visit and nor will we recommend it to anyone else. If this is your idea of fine Indian cuisine, my advice is to travel a little and compare standards.

Recently visited on a Friday evening for a meal. The restaurant is based in the Newcastle House Pub. I have to say Covid precautions were really good, and I felt safe. You go in via pub entrance and hand sanitiser is there, and you are met by someone. To the left is a really nice, well decorated bar area which we did go in after our meal. To the right is a room, with a bar in that is the Indian restaurant. Although all tables were well placed and socially distanced, the room is really tired looking and in my opinion shabby, particularly in comparison with the other room. Drinks are served by the pub and you are billed separately for them which isn't a problem. Both the staff from the bar/hotel and the restaurant were polite, friendly and followed covid secure guidelines. The food in the Indian restaurant was ok and wasn't overpriced, service was good, and staff were friendly.

We decided to have a bank holiday takeaway during our one night stay in Rothbury. We placed the order over the phone and were told it would be ready in 25 minutes. My husband went to collect and was told to wait outside until it was ready which was understandable given the current pandemic. He waited and was disappointed to see that someone who came after him was given her takeaway first. He asked again and was told it would be arriving shortly. He was asked to pay (which he had to remind the member of staff he had already done so on arrival). In total he waited outside for thirty minutes. We would have completely understood as it was a busy bank holiday however no apology was given. Food was average. We wont be rushing back.

Located in the Newcastle House Hotel in Rothbury it is easy to find and lots of parking available on street. Covid measures were all in place and it felt safe. Once seated the drinks are served by someone from the hotel bar, and you are billed separately for these. This is not a problem and service was very friendly and efficient from all the staff. The food was excellent, we had a Naga chicken, a chicken dish with mint (can't remember the name, but mine was served Madras hot) . If you like Naan bread you are in for a real treat, our Peshwari Naan was light, fluffy and tasty and the best one we have ever eaten. All together a great dining experience - thanks to all the staff and we will be back again when in the area.

Stayed in Rothbury and fancied a midweek curry fix. Found the take away menu in our holiday cotttage and thought we'd give it a go. Called and placed my order, food was ready an hour later. I almost missed this gem. I read the recent reviews which were terrible, it was only when I realised that all the bad reviews were from one group on one night that i decided to give it a go. You have to buy your drink from the pub downstairs but that was no hardship. The staff were very friendly and the service was good, We had a great assortment of food, it was all served piping hot and was absolutely delicious. The food is fantastic and the family who run this place are lovely. We often visit Rothbury and the trip wouldn’t be complete without a curry from this place. I can be fussy , and I love Indian food. The Jal Jul is probably the best curry I’ve had. My partner has had a variety of dishes over the years and we have never had a complaint. It’s located above a pub which is a little dated. And the decor of the restaurant is also old fashioned. But don’t judge this place on that. It has a high level of repeat customers and for me that says it all. The only other point to make is that they don’t serve alcohol, however you can grab something from the bar and take it up. Has never bothered us. In summary, get over the decor and enjoy an amazing traditional dish.

So this place is like stepping back in time Cold, dirty and dated The manager or who ever he was needs a personality transplant You don’t demand paying customers to order a minimum amount Just because you’re the only curry house for miles you can treat customers the way you did ! Top tips from someone who’s worked in the hospitality all over the world for 12 years 1: Clean the place and bring it back into the present day standards even with a lick of paint 2: Don’t go barking you’re orders what we can order , a car sales person wouldn’t say no you can’t have a fiesta you must have a Volvo 3: smile ,seat and greet your paying guests, you and your staff are here to serve that is the professional you have chosen Last of all I’m not one for leaving negative reviews, but this is true reflection for this place who ever disagrees must have poor standards Avoid at all cost

I am absolutely appalled. This so called restaurant is awful. On entering the pub on the ground floor the smell was horrendous, damp and dirty with decor to match. A smile from the gentleman behind the bar would have been nice too or maybe a few polite people skills wouldn't have gone amiss. The smell of the glass in which the drink was served was also one to be desired! We headed upstairs to the Indian Restaurant and asked for popadoms and pickles whilst we perused the menu only be told "No, you can't have these until you've ordered your food" When asked why, the waiter replied "because that's what I've been told, sorry" Two of our guests wished to share one main dish with two rice dishes, one naan bread and chips and they were refused this order. When we asked why, we were then told every person had to have a main dish each and two side dishes each to make it worth their while. Make it worth their while, there were 17 of us dining! I have never been to a restaurant where the waiter/manager tells you what you have to eat and in total honesty I was lost for words! I've never experienced anything like it. The waiter/manager/owner (he couldn't decide what his role was) was the most rude and ill-mannered man I have ever had the displeasure of meeting and how he spoke to my mother in law was disgusting, dismissing her like a child. I would not recommend this place at all and I'm surprised that this place is open. The 17 of us left the restaurant without eating, without finishing our drinks and can safely say none of us would recommend or ever return to this place!

As a party of 16 we had pre booked a table. On arrival the venue had a poor odour and old decor but after recommendations we thought we'd still give it a try. Whilst looking through the menu we asked for poppadoms and pickles to be told we'd get them once we'd ordered. When trying to order we were then told we couldn't order a meal to share!! The arrogant manager then informed us it was only worth his while if we ordered a curry plus 2 sides EACH. Never in my life have I been told what I'm allowed to order. Big money lost.

Basic Indian restaurant menu, and background Indian music, but I've enjoyed all the various dishes I've had over several visits in recent years - generous portions. Please be warned that they don't take cash (they had a problem with the card machine not working when they first opened) - you can withdraw cash 150 yards away at Barclays Bank in the High Street, but it's temporarily closed until ?early 2019 (see Councillor Bridger's report given in the local newspaper). They don't do puddings full stop. They're allowed to serve alcohol but only if you buy it in the pub downstairs e.g. wine, beer, and bring it upstairs; they will obtain soft drinks from the pub for you - this is to do with their licence terms. Friendly staff. It can be a bit cold in the room in winter at the start of the evening. I'd say the restaurant isn't for a really posh night out - it's for if you want informality and good starters and main courses.

My husband and I tried to have dinner here last night. We got a table (the restaurant was empty) and tried to order our food. When we started ordering, our super smug server stopped us to let us know that we actually couldn't order what we wanted. Typically when we go for Indian food we order 7 or 8 side dishes so we can share everything. We were told that we had to order main dishes instead as the manager doesn't like when people order sides, but conveniently there wasn't any managers present to talk to. We explained that we were actually spending significantly more on the sides than we would on 2 vegetarian mains and he just kept smiling saying "no". The solution he offered was to order the sides we wanted but we had to take it out and couldn't eat in the restaurant. Excuse me?! What restaurant tells people they cant eat what they order inside because its side dishes? If its on the menu, we should be able to have whatever we want, regardless of how much it is. I've never been so infuriated at a server before, he was so rude and so willing to lose customers, he literally could not have cared less. All he could say when we asked why we could order what we wanted but had to leave to eat it was "take out is different". YOUR SIDE DISHES ARE ON YOUR DINE IN MENU. What a poor way to run a business. You're trash.

Both times we were the only ones in, so the service was good and polite. You have to pop down the pub below to buy any beer, so if you drink a lot it could be a pain. Excellent food and good service, the restaurant was quiet when we visited for an early evening meal, but the takeaway business was busy.

We love this place, the food is excellent and the owners and staff are lovely. The restaurant is very old school but it is the best curry for miles

Stopped here on our first day in Rothbury, very nice tasty meal with good service, alcohol has to be purchased in the pub downstairs but soft drinks are served at the table.

Didn't really expect to find an Indian restaurant in Rothbury which could turn out such fresh tasting dishes. Service was charming. I had the chicken saag and it was delicious. My wife had the prawn dansak and if she eats it, you know it's good.

Had a takeaway from here on a recent trip to Rothbury, and am sorry to say that I found the food distinctly average. The jalfrezi was a rather alarming shade of red and I found the biriyani overheated rather than flavoursome. There is a lack of competition in the area, so I can understand why it's rated highly, but I have had much better curries.

Had a takeaway from here following recommendation from couple of blokes in Newcastle House. They were right. Food excellent. Slight wait but cooked fresh. Good value bearing in mind your out in the sticks!

Spent a night under the stars wild camping and to keep us going we had a curry that we decanted into camping pans to reheat later. Again the meat was not the best quality but perfectly acceptable and the wholesome flavours in the curry more than made up for it. The naans were nice and fluffy and the bhajis crispy. Pleasantly surprised by the standard as we had heard mixed reviews about the place.

We have only ever used the takeaway service at this restaurant and I must say that the quality of the food has always been very good. We stay in Rothbury a few times a year and always purchase a takeaway on these trips. The staff are so friendly and I would recommend to others!

Took a chance as above a pub but enjoyed an excellent meal. Onion Bhajis crisp and substantial. Curries top notch and plentiful. Service efficient and very friendly. Had to go downstairs to bar to get drinks but they were good and reasonably priced.

We were based down the road in holiday lodges and didn't fancy cooking so used old faithful trip advisor for suggestions.... Slightly dubious, as seemed to be either love or hate and being fussy about my curry we gave it a bash.My conclusion? I don't understand the bad reviews! We had a speciality and a traditional curry and both were fantastic! Meat was tender, plenty of it and lots of chunky veg and even whole spices. Totally impressed. Free poppadums, Nan was a bit dry and thick for my taste but that's always very personal....Overall still 10/10!

We mostly use it as a takeaway but had a lovely meal in the restaurant itself with six people in total. Excellent, friendly service, and the food is delicious. You really could not ask for more if you want a curry in or near Rothbury!Recently taken over in 2015 (ish), the quality of the food has risen significantly since the new owner/management took control. I would disregard reviews older than two years or so!

Visited during a recent stay after reading reviews on tripadvisor. Located above a pub you pick a beer up in the bar before going up to the restaurant.Bar tender even helped to bring them upstairs. Staff chatty and friendly. Maybe not the best curry I've ever had but still a good curry. Cash only which was not a problem. Would return if passing again.

Popped in during a 2 night stay. We were the only people dining but a lot of people came to pick up takeaway. The waiter(owner?) Was lovely and willing to chat or leave you to your own company. We ordered 2 starters 2 mains a rice and naan and there was no way to finish it all as the portions were very generous. The food was good but not outstanding but the service was excellent. You have to pop downstairs to the railway hotel if you want alcoholic drinks. All in out bill was approx £35 which was good value for a lovely evening.

Visited this restaurant. First I was suprised they don't take card so had to go to the bank to get cash. The service was not good and we had to wait for over 20 minutes just for the waiter to come and take our order. I do also think the prices seem high for the quality and quantity of food. I must admit I will not be returning

It's a bit quaint; having an Indian restaurant in what was once the upstairs meeting room of a pub. But don't hesitate - it's great food.

Having tried the food here on two/three occasions, many years ago, and we were Not happy, we dared to try again. THANK GOODNESS! It is vastly improved. Perhaps lacking the finesse and brilliance of a top class Indian restaurant, but very nice indeed, and this is a small rural area. we shall be going at least twice a month.

Excellent meal consisting of chicken pakoras to start, Naga chicken and mushroom rice for main with just the right amount of spice. An all round great experience with friendly family service. Will definitely be visiting again. 10 out 10.Ps deco could do with an update but don't let that put you off.

We visited Rothbury for a few days in January and found there are not many places open on Monday nights so we were very lucky to find the Village Tandoori at the Railway Hotel open. The food was very good and the owner was very welcoming. We enjoyed our meal as it was well cooked and reasonably priced.

Three of us visited on a Sunday evening. Although there were other people there it wasn’t full. The restaurant is abit shabby looking and certainly needs an update but nevertheless the food is authentic and that’s what matters. Curries and nan breads were excellent. We found the service was good, staff were there when we needed them. We will be back when visiting Rothbury.

The Tandoori shop is a small counter at which you order food to take away; there’s no seating except a bench on which to wait for your order. You do wait (e.g., 20 minutes), which is fine because the food is made when you order. For a small takeaway place, the menu is huge: every assortment of Indian fare you could want—plus pizza. You can pick the proteins sauce, type of rice. The food is good and a good value (even if there’s more sauce than protein)—especially the naan.

We had an Indian and sat in cafe. The food was delicious and freshly cooked. Staff members courteous and friendly. The cafe is slightly dated but it didn’t deter from a lovely meal. When next in Rothbury we will definitely go again.
