Viet Quan Cafe in Portsmouth

Having been to Vietnam over the summer, we have been trying to find somewhere with authentic food and this place did not disappoint! The food was absolutely delicious and my personal favorite was the green papaya salad which instantly transported me back. We did have some issues, hence the 4*. Service was slow, with starters being sat finished in front of us for almost 15 minutes (bearing in mind there were only two other tables there and one waitress was seen sat on her phone scrolling). We waited 15 minutes for our banh mi to come out and mine was served with the bottom burnt - cue a further wait for another to be served. We did appreciate the staff apologising for the wait. I'm sure we were just unfortunate based on the amazing reviews we saw prior to booking, we'd definitely still try this place again!

There for dinner with a large group, ordered our food ahead. All good but when I arrived, went to the bar/desk for a bottle of wine, I was asked to pay a service charge, refused. Later in the evening one of our group tried to buy a bottle of wine separately from the group but was refused & had to put it on the bill thus incurring a service charge. Shame as we really like the food here.

This is the third time that we have been in for a meal. Each time we have tried different dishes and each time we have not been disappointed. Lovely family run restaurant, very attentive, fantastic food. If I had one complaint it would be that I have eaten too much!

Great food, Lennies service was perfect me and my friend Gavin shared some lovely starters and mains. The lemonade Is some of the best I have had in Portsmouth

Max is a very nice and lovely waiter and very friendly. Atmosphere also very nice and cozy inside! 5* and would definitely reccomend to eat here again!

Terrific early lunch. Popped in without booking and just got lucky! Ordered a bunch from the Beer menu and every dish was outstanding. Excellent, personable service from the welcoming staff. Can't find fault. Will be back!

Lovely Vietnamese food and great service. We had tasty prawn summer rolls and we all had Beef Pho. The portions were large with lots of beef and even the children’s portion was generous. We would definitely return.

Small cafe/restaurant and there were several Vietnamese present when I went with friends - I would recommend booking. The Chicken Wings are to die for. I had the Spicy Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue) and my friends had the Noodle Soup (Pho) and the Mango Sald - all dishes were excellent. For me, my highlight was the Vietnamese Iced Coffee.

I had a fantastic dining experience at Viet Quan Cafe. The Asian and Vietnamese dishes were absolutely delicious and authentic. The flavors were vibrant and perfectly balanced, making every bite a delight. The ambiance was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to enjoy genuine Vietnamese cuisine!

My enormously hungry teenage son and I happened upon Viet Quán, after travelling from Goodwood to stay in a hotel in Portsmouth for the night. What a blinkingbluddymarvellous find! The food was absolutely second to none; the staff were the perfect combination of cheerful, friendly, polite, helpful and attentive, and although the restaurant was fully booked when we arrived, a table was set up for us outside (which was touching, hilarious, random, and jolly good fun). We had a prawn mango salad, squid, an amazing noodle broth, and chilli beef with lemongrass. Plus the best homemade lemonade I've ever had - I'm VERY particular about my praise for homemade lemonade as it's all too often not that good but this one really does deserve a serious round of applause. Authentic Vietnamese street food it certainly is, and such fantastic value for money. There aren't many covers - perhaps ten to twelve and a few bar-style seats looking out of the window, making the atmosphere intimate without being squashed or intrusive or prickly. The perfect end to a fabulous Saturday. I'm so glad we found it.

Popped in mid week for a quick supper. We were warmly welcomed and quickly seated. The food was delicious and well served and the bill was very reasonable too!

Stumbled across this lovely little restaurant whilst walking round Portsmouth and were drawn in by the cosy welcoming atmosphere. Waiters were friendly and helpful. Food was amazing and overall experience was fab. Would definitely recommend.

Absolutely amazing find! The food tastes amazing, cooked to perfection and the service was even better! This is the place to go if you’re looking for something light but tasty and it doesn’t cost an arm & a leg! Will definitely be returning with some friends. DELICIOUS! Quick service, we all had mains and sides, noodles, marinated meats, rice, spring rolls. Everything was awesome, tasty, cooked to perfection. And we had a show to see, the service was super quick. Beautiful Asian food, the honey chicken was our fave. We will be back!

This family run restaurant delivers in both the food and service fronts. The food is excellent, authentic and served promptly. we ordered a selection of the small plates, all which were excellent. The food was perfectly cooked and delivered quickly by a very friendly front house staff.One of our party also had the Banh Mi, which again was fantastic, and probably the most legit Banh Mi This have seen in the U.K. My personal favourite is the Papaya Salad, better than I’ve had anywhere in the U.K or Vietnam. The service was personal, warm and friendly and I cannot compliment the staff enough for making the experience at Viet Quan memorable. This was our first visit to the Viet Quan it certainly will not be our last.

I enjoyed a tasty Vietnamese lunch at Viet Quan today with my brother.He chose vegetarian spring rolls and Pho, I beef summer rolls followed by com vit quay ( grilled duck breast with rice.) All the dishes were delicious, the service was welcoming and we will definitely return.

Al tener amigos cercanos que viven en Portsmouth, mi encantadora esposa y yo a menudo manejamos a una hora y un poco de donde vivimos y NUNCA dejamos de comer o llevar lejos de Viet Quan. No hay nada que hayamos tenido de su menú que no nos haya gustado, pero nuestros favoritos son: CHA GIO: ¡crujientes y aromáticos bollos de langostinos y carne de cerdo! BANH Mi SAIGON: cerdo y zanahorias en escabeche en una ligera baguette crujiente. BUN THIT NUONG CHA GIO: DELICIOSAS lonchas de cerdo a la parrilla con los panecillos antes mencionados servidos sobre fideos y ensalada. Y EL MEJOR COMBO KHO Estofado de ternera al estilo vietnamita con arroz que RECOMIENDO ALTAMENTE como su paraíso en la boca.El servicio es siempre encantador, servicial y rápido, y el restaurante en sí es muy limpio y acogedor. Nunca hemos tenido problemas para encontrar estacionamiento en las calles circundantes.

Five stars, every single plate of food was lush, and cooked and served with care and how lovely to have a proper Vietnamese beer with it. Hidden gem, highly recommended, go and support this wonderful eatery!

I’ve been craving those flavours since my travels in Vietnam a few years ago. It was fantastic. The Chà giò was incredible, along with the Bánh mì Saigon and the Bún bò xào. The service was great too. Can’t wait to return. Super yummy.

Fabulous staff and service and delicious, authentic Vietnamese food. Well worth the visit and very reasonably priced. Sadly we do not live close enough to visit more regularly but we are always happy when we can.

Disfrutamos de la comida vietnamita, así que esta era una oportunidad demasiado buena para perderla :) Disfrutamos mucho de la comida, bien preparada y con un sabor muy fresco. El marido disfrutó especialmente de la carne Luc lac (?). ¡Probé mi primer té de burbujas y no será el último! El servicio también fue encantador. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente y me encantaría volver.

AMO la comida vietnamita, y he tenido una buena parte de haberme enamorado de ella desde que viajé por el país. Probé Viet Quan por primera vez anoche y estos chicos lo clavaron. La comida era deliciosa (¡teníamos bastantes platos!), Deliciosa, fresca y muy bien de precio. El personal era tan, tan encantador y el restaurante en sí es un poco más pequeño pero se siente agradable y acogedor; Creo que esto es parte de lo que crea una atmósfera realmente amigable e íntima.Lo recomendaría encarecidamente y no puedo esperar hasta mi próxima visita.

Me and my sister visited here on Saturday night and were lucky enough to get a table. It's a small cosy restaurant which was great as it wasn't loud or overcrowded. The menu is great with authentic dishes and a selection of choices but not so many you take forever to decide. The food was delicious flavourful and filling while also being light and feeling healthy so we left full and happy. I look forward to going back as it was a great find.

Having never eaten Vietnamese Food we asked the waiter ( lady) she was great and looked after us very well . Ordered two starters and a main asked for plates as we shared nothing to much trouble .Then came the important bit The Food beautifully presented and taste matched the presentation, enjoyed it tremendously.Then of course the half price bill topped it off, BUT we will be back at full price well worth it and parking outside.Thank you all at Viet Quon

This was a lucky find for us when we needed a bite before the ferry. The food was delicious, especially the pho and summer rolls. Very careful re covid. Good service. Very fair price. Worth it if you’re nearby.

Just delicious. We’ve spent a fair amount of time in Vietnam and love the food. We visited Viet Quan with dear friends and their somewhat picky children. Everyone loved it, much to the parents happy surprise. We ate a lot and took home even more. The Bo Kho was outstanding, flavour packed into every bite. The bun thit nuong fresh and tasty. The pho exceptional. A lovely welcoming restaurant. Well worth a visit and very reasonably priced.

Un peu éloigné du centre ville de Portsmouth, une devanture assez discrète sur la route vers le bord de mer. Toute la cuisine est maison et tout est DELICIEUX, c'est sans doute le meilleur phô que j'ai goûté: bouillon très parfumé, viande, légumes, pâtes, tout est parfait!! mêmes appréciations pour les bô buns, les salades, les vins au verre. Nous y sommes allés plusieurs fois avec toujours le même plaisir. L'accueil est chaleureux, le service efficace, la propreté irréprochable et les prix sont raisonnables. Font aussi du take away

A great gem of a place to eat in Portsmouth. The food is as good as you'd get in Vietnam itself. Great menu and the service is great. I tested this place out over a year ago on my way home one evening and have probably been coming here twice a week every since. Chicken thighs with rice is great. Their summer rolls are tremendous and the soups they do are not to be missed. Highly recommended.

De camino a Clarence Pier en Southsea, mi esposa vio un restaurante de comida callejera vietnamita. Después de un poco de diversión y juegos, todos estábamos muy hambrientos, así que decidimos almorzar en Viet Quan. Al entrar, nos saludaron y nos sentamos muy rápido. Decidimos pedir algunas sopas de fideos vietnamitas Pho. Carne y la casa especial para mi esposa y para mí, respectivamente. Pedimos unos fideos planos de arroz y pollo para nuestra hija. Para las bebidas, pedimos tés de burbujas. La comida no tardó mucho en llegar y estaba caliente y sabrosa, y era justo lo que nos calentaba en un día frío. El lugar tiene un ambiente maravilloso, muy tranquilo y relajado. El personal es muy cálido y amable, y muy educado. Seguro, volveremos a experimentar y disfrutar otros platos en su menú.

We are so grateful that this restaurant opened just round the corner from us - we’ve spent the best part of a year getting healthy take out weekly!! Healthy, nutritious, incredibly delicious authentic Vietnamese food which we just can’t get enough of. I would recommend the summer rolls and the mango salad but honestly every single thing on this menu is delightful. The staff are the heart of this restaurant, always going above and beyond for their customers. 5* every single time!! Thank you!

Went with my sisters and brother in law after shopping at gunny, being from London we are used to the brusque service. The wait wasn't too bad considering there only seems to be one chef. Food was tasty although I found the portions small and prices similar to London. Bubble tea was OK, I guess I'm used to chatime who do much better drinks. Would go again but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

I went to this restaurant today. At the beginning when I saw the starter that I quite happy with it then I told my friend that I will bring more friends come next time. But when I saw the main food I was astonished with the food ingredients. As a vegetarian soup that only some oil deep fried Tofu, bean sprout, a few slices of made from beans with Tofu and one slice of herb then I asked the waitresse that why didn't you put more different vegetables in this soup. It just Tofu and bean then she answered, "Our vegetarian soup comes just like this. If you don't happy with this I won't serve you again and you don't need pay for it." Then she repeated her words to the Kitchen chef that showing up her power. I am wondering why her attitude like this. May be they had enough customers and too many good reviews.

So nice to find something different in Portsmouth from the usual pub meals, fish and chips and curry. The Vietnamese food is delicious and so tasty. The pho and the broth tastes amazing just like I've had in Vietnam. Please keep the authentic and do not change anything for the western palate!

I came here with my wife and my son. The staff were friendly and socialble. We only had a couple of dishes but everything was fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. I can't fault it!

Visited as we happened to drive past on our way to Parade Tea Rooms. So glad we stopped and had lunch here instead. The food tasted great and didn’t have to wait long to be served. Well priced lunch, not too expensive. Makes a nice change to go somewhere for lunch that has healthy food. The only negative I’d say is that the sofa chair was a bit too high compared to the table so it hurt my back after eating - my boyfriend can sit that side next time!

I have been to this place several times and I have to say it’s fantastic. The ingredients are always the best and the flavours are amazing. The price is very reasonable too. Definitely one of the best places to eat in Portsmouth .

Pretty tasty Vietnam rice noodle, not far from the University library. Reasonable price and nice staff.

Much less known than Bubble & Pho in Albert Road, this little, relatively new restaurant is well worth the visit. Good food, good value , attentive staff, what else is there to say !?...., try the nems ( spring rolls) and the chicken or beef pho, the broth is awesome .... always appears to have a lot of Asian clientele from the local university, a good review in itself !

One of the best pho's I have had in a long time, packed full of flavour, washed down with a cheeky beer just lovely gubbly had a beautiful beef and onion dish as a starter too that was packed with flavour too. Highly recommend

We were on our way to Gunwharf and instead spotted this opposite the university. Delicious food, prices are very reasonable, service and atmosphere is all good. Pho great, chicken wings and spring rolls all really good.

I have been here on a couple of occasions and both times it has been a very positive experience. The food is very good and certainly captures the taste of Vietnam that I remember from my visit. Cold Saigon beer is served to wash it down. The staff are very friendly and the service is prompt. The place is quite small and getting a table can be an issue if busy.

We visited as a family and were all amazed at just how lovely the food was. Not having had Vietnamese before, we weren't sure entirely what to expect, but what we received far exceeded our expectations.

A group of us visited last night and only one of us had a clue about Vietnamese food but we were luck as the we’re happy to give us a wide range of starters for us to try and they were a delicious introduction to the food. They also pointed out the vegetarian options making choices easier. When we came to ordering main courses we frankly didn’t know what to expect. What we got was delicious large bowls of fresh vegetables, noodles or rice with deliciously cooked meat and dipping sauces. Or, huge bowls of soup, several of us had duck or pork with rice and it was lovely but didn’t have the “it’s huge” factor. The best complement I heard all evening was a friend who’s a confirmed meat and two veg person who said that she’d no idea she could feel so full with healthy food! One lady took a doggy bag and they were happy to help us with any requests. C cracking good value night out.

Walked past this place last night and it was heaving with customers. Noted it was new as I spend a bit of time is Southsea and reviews were recent.

Full of Vietnamese students which is always a good sign we had delicious Pho. Huge portions with bean sprouts and chilliest to add. Very good value at £22.

The old Wig and Pen pub has now been transformed into a deservedly popular Vietnamese cafe. The food is fresh and extremely moreish and the staff are friendly. My lunch last week comprised pork and prawn summer rolls and spicy beef broth. Absolutely delicious. I'm off there for lunch again in a mo. Must dash

We try to eat here every weekend. The food is fresh and delicious and the service super lovely. We needed a great Vietnamese in Portsmouth and now we have one, hooray!

This is a fab cafe. It’s open 10am-10pm every day apart from Sunday and serves fresh, healthy Vietnamese food. The noodles are delicious and the prawns were so tasty. Can’t wait to come back here with friends!

도서관에서 공부 중 우연히 발견한 베트남 식당. 가격 자체는 그렇게 싼 편은 아니었으나, 음식 질이나 위생상태 등 식당에 필요한 전반적인 것들은 방문할 만한 가치가 있음.

In an unusual location not near to any other restaurants on a busy road, this might be a challenging place for a Vietnamese pho restaurant. It is however close to the University just across from the Dental Academy. We visited on a rainy weekday and it was busy at lunchtime which bodes well. The pho noodles came in generous large bowls with salad separate, and the Vietnamese baguette was surprisingly tasty, an exotic alternative to a Subway. Good service but a bit slow, lovely ambience warm with brick wall, paintings & eclectic furniture that works. Recommend as a good alternative to an otherwise boring sandwich lunch.

We visited at 6pm and had a pho and a duck dish as well as a prawn and sweet potato starter to share. The food was excellent and really tasty, the service was friendly and quick and the prices were not expensive (we paid about £25 including two drinks).

Lovely little place that was very accommodating to me and a friend with a small toddler. The service is very friendly and the food is pretty remarkable. Really terrific beef stew that will be particularly great during the winter.

I would have never noticed that it was a Vietnamese cafe if I hadn't taken a look at the menu on the window. The food was absolutely amazing, and the price and portions were decent as well. Will definitely go back!!!

This charming little restaurant is a bit out of the way, but very welcoming. The service was very attentive and food freshly cooked and amazing. The menu is full of traditional street food and the portions very generous without being overwhelming. Lovely selection of beer. A really nice cafe if you fancy something a little different.

This restaurant is a hidden gem. From the outside, you might think it is a traditional pub/restaurant and the you see the description: Vietnamese Street Food. I had no idea, what to expect. When we came in, it was a very relaxing and welcoming atmosphere and we were quickly at ease. And I can reveal that the food surprised and amazed us. So fresh and delicious, made with a lot of love and care. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon and we will be returning soon.
