Verna's Pepper Shack in Torbay

Two couples for an evening meal. Absolutely excellent. Plenty of attention and bon homie without fawning, gratis nibbles and great menu choice - cooked to perfection. And the killer cocktails? Divine. And overall, good value for money. No complaints at all. Such a pity they'll be closing for good, soon. Get in while you can. Brixham needs more places like this.

We decided to give this restaurant a try after walking past it on the harbour. We didn’t regret our decision. Great welcome with plenty of information about the restaurant and the chef. We had the Masala Mutton and the chicken curry - absolutely fabulous. We will be back next time we are in Brixham. PS sorry about the pic - it smelt so gorgeous we forgot to take a pic u til after we had shared it on our plates 😁

Delicious food. We had the vegetarian options of sweet potato and black bean curry and calypso jerk tofu, as well as the pork and pineapple dish. They were all very tasty. We also enjoyed the apple and garlic dumpling and samosas with delicious fillings. Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable about the food and welcoming too. We will definitely return next time we are visiting the area 🙂

Came here for dinner and the food was amazing!! There was a large group of us, so we had lots of different meals, ribs, curry, stew and was all brilliant. Quirky inside, and lovely staff! A must when visiting Brixham!

If you only eat out once in Brixham this is the place to go. We had sampled other venues but this was the best. Never really sampled this cuisine before and now we are hooked. The proprietors were lovely and friendly, colourful interior right on the harbour front, opposite the Golden Hind. Advise booking as not a huge venue although we were lucky and called on speck. Prawn starters yummy, curry goat amazing and the deserts divine. Had lovely cocktails too. All in all wonderful fayre and we are total foodies so not always easily pleased.😆

Just been for a family meal for our last night in Brixham . Food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced . Service was great too . This was by far the best meal we had all week. Would highly recommend. All the starters and mains were fantastic but save some room for the desserts - we had the Banoffee Pie and Sticky Toffee Pudding…amazing. Verna came out to speak to us about the food and the desserts, it was clearly a family restaurant where they were keen to ensure we enjoyed our evening. If you are in Brixham book a table, you will not be disappointed.

We visited tonight and had a lovely meal and drinks, along with a friendly welcome. This restaurant is different to anything else in the area that we have found which was part of the appeal. The obvious quality of the preparation and cooking made this a great evening. We would all (2 adults and our 15 and 12 year olds) highly recommend Pepper Shack.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. We each had starters, mains and lots of cocktails! Everything, including the staff, was spot on. The atmosphere was great for such a small place. Would definitely return if in the area again.

What a gem in Brixham. Nice to have somewhere different to eat. We have been here many times over the last 25 years with family and friends and have never been disappointed. Unique flavoursome Caribbean food, very authentic, give it a go you won’t be disappointed, Jerk ribs are fantastic!! Excellent service.

We booked this restaurant on our first evening in Brixham based solely on Tripadvisor reviews. A family run restaurant with gorgeous home cooked food. The complimentary dumplings were delicious and the mains were well cooked and large portion sizes too. We were fortunate to get a window seat overlooking the harbor. Definitely worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

This is the best restaurant in Brixham. Family run with authentic Trinidad cooking. I highly recommend this place, it’s great.

This little restaurant is a hidden gem in beautiful surroundings overlooking Brixham Harbour. We found it on Facebook and so pleased we did, reviews were excellent.. The restaurant is upstairs and we were lucky enough to get a seat by the window with lovely views....

I have been looking up at the Pepper Shack for the last few years thinking 'I would really love to try some food in there' me and my other half lastnight decided to take the plunge. We were not disappointed! The food was amazing! and we felt so satisified afterwards (we reccomend the saltfish) it was truly a pleasure to have some authentic Caribbean food that was on our doorstep. Thank you Pepper Shack! We had delicious vegetarian stuffed roti, busup shut with channa curry. Authentic flavours, Great service and ready to collect on time. Can't recommend it highly enough!

I must admit it was some time ago that I last ate here (about 4 months before the Covid lockdown roughly) but it's an amazing place. We come here whenever my grandma from up north comes down to visit and it never fails to impress. Where to start, the service from the get-go is fantastic, you don't feel like just another person with a credit card, you feel genuinely welcomed. This is only further helped by the atmosphere of the place, the restaurant is beautifully decorated with (I'm assuming) traditional Trinidadian and Jamaican ornament as well as some personal touches (not a rugby fan myself but can respect the rugby tops either way). And the food, it's incredible. We're not a well off family so it's a very special occasion to eat out and this place definitely delivers. The portions are very generous, the food itself tastes great and unlike anything you could find in the supermarkets or other restaurants I've been to and the price is very fair.I can't wait to come back when this Covid malarkey has died down and we can sit in again.

Made a welcome change not to cook my own Caribbean / Guyanese food. I especially enjoyed Verna's curry goat roti which came as a huge portion and was properly seasoned. Her roti is soft and moreish - absolutely 'banging' - and the rice and peas properly cooked with coconut and thyme. I particularly liked the way Verna incorporates pepper in her cooking, as I've eaten other so called Caribbean 'bland' food catered for the mass market, which they dollopped varying amounts of Encona depending on how 'spicy' you wanted it. Husband loved the chicken samosas and the callaloo cooked in coconut. The only downside (and this was purely down to personal taste) was the sweetness of the Calypso jerk chicken sauce, as I prefer to taste ground pimentos and scotch bonnet. The pepper sauce tastes just like my dad's and is a favourite of my nephew in law (who is Jamaican) that I send him a couple of bottles up to London. Thank you.

Sadly Verna's was only doing take away due to the restrictions of Covid, which is completely understandable. But if you find yourself in Brixham and you need a takeaway, this is a must. Verna's cooking is as always exceptional, the Goat Curry always goes down well as did the Trinidadian Chicken that I had.

Here on holiday with friends and thought we’d check out Verna’s pepper shack. Couldn’t fault it! Can’t take a picture as it’s all gone! Had jerk chicken, Ackee and saltfish, chicken stew, prawn curry and extra dumplings. All served with rice and peas. Would definitely recommend! Can’t wait to return to Brixham and have a sit down meal rather than a takeaway. Verna also popped out of the kitchen to say hello which was really nice!

At the time we visited the Pepper Shack it was open for Takeaway only due to covid. We had a traditional curried goat and jerk chicken with rice and peas. You could taste the love and quality in the food. Cannot wait to go back when it reopens as dine-in.

Simply amazing, as a Family of 6 we tried a big selection of their starters and mains. The mutton masala and veggie samosas were big favourites! Thanks so much and I look forward to enjoying more of your food in the future!

Substandard food. Reheated and luke warm. Jerk sauce tasted like shop bought and did not come with coleslaw as advertised. Jerk sauce had no all spice/pimento in (a key ingredient). The chicken stew tasted heavily of browning, was dry and did not come with the calliloo as advertised. It's rare that I'd say a meal was inedible but unfortunately this was the case. I've eaten alot of average tasting Carribbean food and have never once felt compelled to warn others. I can only assume that the people who have previously given good reviews have not tried Carribbean (specifically Trini) food before. If you are accustomed to eating good Carribbean/Trini food please don't waste your money here.

We purchased the pumpkin patty and the dumplings. The Patties were tiny and undercooked with a salad that made them wet and soggy! The dumplings were neither round nor browned and were all oily; their appearance was more akin to fried cod. Not impressed for my £9.00. Didn't have a chance to complain in person as we didn't realise until we got home. Yes, we appreciate that times are hard with CoVid, but if you are displaying the flag and advertising that it is take-away only then please get it right.

I was here in Brixham on holiday and really looking forward to some authentic Caribbean food. I ordered the stew chicken, but it was inedible. The chicken was dry and in a rich gravy with no real flavour. We also had Jerk chicken which was equally rich and similar taste to the stew chicken. The only half decent thing was the rice, but the mains were so below par. I was really disappointed as Carribean is one of my favourite cuisines, but I really was shocked at what I ended up with.

My family and I went to the pepper shack last Thursday 19/03/2020 there were 4 adults in our party we were made extremely welcome from the moment we entered we were given a free complimentary dumpling each at the start of the meal these were gorgeous the main courses were equally as good not to fiery hot but just enough spices to make it all really pleasant my wife and I had the grazes platter it consisted of curried goat a mutton dish and a madras dish with rice n peas it was absolutely amazing Verna the chef was brilliant she came out and checked if the food was ok for us and then stood having a lovely chat telling us about the food and her life back in Jamaica which we found very interesting her husband John was equally as nice as we are big rugby fans he was Telling us about his sons who play for England the armitage brothers and showing us some memorabilia we were also allowed to try on some of verna’s authentic Mardi Gras headdresses a real big thank you both for a lovely experience if anyone is visiting Brixham this restaurant is an absolute must if you like Caribbean food or even if it’s your first time go and speak to Verna and John and I’m sure they will recommend a meal you will like once again a big thank you from us we will be back in October hopefully and look forward to seeing you for another lovely meal

What a find. This is a lovely relaxed and charming restaurant on the edge of the quay run by an extremely hospitable couple who immediately make you feel at ease. The food is beautifully spiced with a gentle heat and full of flavour using fresh local produce. Plenty of cocktails to choose from & an unfussy but comprehensive wine list. Prices represent excellent value for money and I’m looking forward to our next visit! Well done Pepper Shack!

Omg what good Caribbean food this place is a gem oh and of course I had to have a strawberry daiquiri ( yes I am a tart) if you are in Brixham you have to come here it’s fab!! BThis is not our first visit and I have reviews it before a few years ago but thought it deserved a mention again as the food is still superb very authentic ( see below for our choices this time) and the service and the quirky atmosphere they have created is awesomeWe were a party of 5 who were all very hungryEveryone had a good meal in our group and we especially enjoyed the starters and the complimentary dumplings - they are delicious and I could have had a plate of them on there own with drinks and a dip Top tip if you have anyone in your group that does. Not like spicy food ( they are missing out!!!) then there are some Brixham favourites on the menus if you are in Brixham and want something different then this is the venue for you

The place is very quirky at first glance with an array of ceremonial head dresses around the walls. However, the food was delicious and obviously home cooked. It beats hands down a well known Caribbean food chain.

Been meaning to go here for best part of a year when I first moved to the area and seen it on trip advisor but just haven’t got round to it. The first time here tonight and without doubt...My favourite restaurant ever!!! This tucked away, small restaurant is absolutely out of this world! Sat on top the harbour looking out and friendly staff definitely make this place such a lovely and beautiful atmosphere to enjoy your evening. All this and haven’t even got around to the food...If I could of fitted in more, I’d be ordering more for sure. I’ve eaten in a lot of very lovely restaurants, including some Michelin Stars and the food in The Pepper Shack, is a different league!!! Hats off to the staff and of course, THE CHEF! I very highly recommend to everyone!

Six of us ate here on nyd all of us thoroughly enjoyed food /drinks and service.This restaurant is one of the best places to eat in brixham the food is delicious and so fresh lovely wine and atmosphere is great.Perfect evening was topped off with a surprise birthday cake from Verna. Visited Verna's for our first meal out in the new year. It's a lovely place with plenty to look at and picturesque views over Brixham harbour. We received a friendly greeting and were tended to by the charming waitress. My boyfriend ordered the lamb and I chose the ackee fish, both came with generous portions of rice and peas and were delicious. We cleaned our plates! Sadly we were too full for dessert so treated ourselves to a Margherita each which more than did the trick. Thanks to everyone and we'll certainly be back. It was a great night.

Dined at the Peppershack on various occasions over the years and have always thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this beautiful restaurant - food is always spot on and you won't be disappointed with the quantities / flavours of whichever meal you choose from the very generous menu selection. Pricing is very fair and they top it all off which some great cocktails I'd highly recommended the ribs and you'd be a fool to not get puddingThank you as always to Verna and her daughter for the superb cooking and to John for the great hospitality!

Verna never disappoints! Authentic home cooked Caribbean food - this time we had the spicy king prawn roti and scallop & ling curry. Both outstanding and you get more than your money’s worth! As per, nothing to fault at pepper shack - great music and cocktails by John and service from their lovely daughter! We will be back as always :) thank you for a special evening!

We booked a table for 2 for my husbands birthday , I mentioned it to the owner when we arrived and my husband was quickly given a birthday balloon by the chef. We ordered spare ribs and Samoas for starters and for mains a mutton masala and a goat curry. All were fantastic, lovely flavours, and well presented. For dessert we had a ice cream cocktail and my hubby was presented with a lovely slice of rum cake with ice cream and a birthday candle and a round of happy birthdays. It was a unexpectedly special evening. Thank you for making it a wonderful birthday.

Mixed sample starter was nice. Main meals we thought were pretty standard. Big mark up on cans of red stripe but fully aware of the prices.

We ate here while on holiday in Brixham and loved it! The food was fantastic, spicy but not crazy hot, with generous portions. We shared beef patties for a starter and had curry goat and savoury hake (a sort of fish curry style dish), both delicious. We couldn't resist the desserts despite feeling quite full and these were also delicious! (Banoffee pie and a Caribbean take on rum baba with rum custard). The cocktails were also excellent.

We had one night in Brixham, booked the Pepper Shack purely on the recommendations on TripAdvisor. The restaurant is upstairs, so consequently has fantastic views over the harbour. Our food was delicious & can totally recommend the Jerk chicken. Our shared starter was equally good & a great way to try the goat, Ackee & Saltfish. Also delicious & refreshingly different. Verna came out to talk to us after dinner, so we were able to say thank you for a lovely evening. The advertisements & menus downstairs do not do the restaurant justice. Go upstairs & have a fabulous evening!

There are certain favourites you expect to see on a carribean menu, but the Pepper Shack is much more than that, it's feeling at home. As well as goat, chicken and veggie curries the chef makes good use of the local Brixham fruits of the sea. The flavour is top notch, simple, but at the same time complex and deep; cooking that only really develops by being passed down the generations in small kitchens. The curry we had was tasty, but definitely not too hot, and the real star was some of the best rice and peas I've had in a long time. We also loved the friendliness of this family run place; the chef came out for a chat and we got some good recipe tips. There is also a pretty good range of rum based drinks. Overall a great little place and a bit more special than just pub cod and chips.

Had my 56th birthday here with a small family group and it couldn't have been better.

Managed to get a table without booking whilst on holiday. The staff, food and drinks are all excellent! Nothing is to much trouble, cocktails lethal lol, food very tasty and plenty of it. Would recommend to anyone staying in the area.

If you’re in Brixham, book a table! Fantastic food, drinks and staff. Can highly recommend the starter with 3 options. The jerk chicken main was lovely and the cocktails expertly crested. Seriously can’t recommend this hidden gem too much.

We had fish patties, ackee and saltfish samosas, jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish mains- all were brilliant. Generous portions and good value, especially compared to some of the other seafront restaurants in brixham. Excellent cocktail menu, and friendly service- one of our favourite restaurants in brixham.

My second time eating here and it did not disappoint, my partner and I came for a meal and we were served by the amazing Dannica (and everyone else was brilliant too we just didn’t catch their names). I had the baby back ribs and they were outstanding - I could not recommend them enough - and my partner had the tofu ! Would definitely say this place is vegetarian friendly and we will definitely be returning ! Please visit this place if you get a chance - you will not be disappointed

My son wanted to go here for the Goat Curry, but unfortunately they were out of Goat, What we did have was excellent, especially the complimentary Pholourie (Apple and Garlic Trini dumplings). Between the three of us we had the Jerk Pork Skewers, Starter Ribs (Carnival sauce), and Jamaica Baked Mackerel for starters; followed by Jamaica Jerk Chicken with Vegetable Rice, Trinidad Stew Chicken with Rice and Peas, and Masala Mutton Roti, plus a side of Trinidadian Callaloo - all of which we would heartily recommend.

We visited as a family and pre-booked to make sure we had a table. Great location on Brixham harbour - evening they open from 6pm. We love Caribbean food and have been disappointed a few times but not here - food was delicious and the hosts were friendly and helpful. The cocktails were also delicious - try the punch for a real kick! We were really looking forward to coming here and so pleased we did. Thank you for your hospitality and spicing up our evening crabbing with the kids with the punch! Also this restaurant is very family friendly which makes all the difference. Went last night and it was great. the food was delicious and so tasty. I shared the main a Grazer's Delight, Curry Goat, Masala Mutton, Madras Beef and the sticky toffee pudding was huge but I fitted it in :) The owners and servers are lovely and friendly. Every body in our group enjoyed the evening and we will be going back for sure.

I had takeaway meal yesterday and was extremely happy that the food was delicious and full of flavour. The curry goat was tender and melted off the bone. I was pleased with my generous portion of the sticky toffee pudding which had a unusual ingredient in it which was awesome. (Bye the way the food had my mother’s approval!) so well done and I look forward to visiting again with my family when next in town.

Lovely venue, welcoming staff and great choice of local beers. However we left wondering what all the fuss was about, the portion was very small, considering the price.

Decided to eat here st last, window seat overlooking the harbour, and amazing food and relaxed atmosphere. The owners made us fell very welcome and we have a great evening. They were apologetic because we were waiting for food but we were in a relaxed environment in good company eating good food. Who wants to rush. We all had different meals starters, mains, deserts every meal was well presented and different. Great evening thank you highly recommended even the music in the background fitted with the relaxed environment.

We had heard really good things about this place, however it doesn’t really hit the mark. Slightly strange dynamic with the host and can feel a little uncomfortable. The food is large portions, but doesn’t really give a lot of eating pleasure. The decor is a little retro and doesn’t really make you enjoy the space. I don’t like giving poor reviews however there are places in Brixham where you will have far better food for the same money.

Popped in here whilst on a recent visit to Brixham, having seen the reviews and fancied something non seafood for a change! Ordered a taster starter between the two of us, which was lovely. Good way of trying a small amount of different things. Before that, we were treated to an interesting complimentary dumpling with mango sauce - yum! Ordered caramelised chicken and and a pork with pineapple as our mains, both with various rice combos. Both very succulent as long slow cooked. Verna came out of the kitchen to check how we liked our food, so we let her know how nice it was! Lovely food, in a Caribbean themed room, with reggae tunes as accompaniment (little bit loud but part of the experience!) Deffo worth checking out. Get in there early and get a table overlooking the harbour.

Our best meal of our holiday by far. The atmosphere is fab and the service excellent. However, the food was simply amazing. We had the taster starter which was delicious and then the jerk chicken which was outstanding followed by the rum baba which was mouth watering. It was our last night but if we are ever back in Brixham this would be top of our list to go back to. Thoroughly recommend. Superb.

Booked a table here as read the reviews on Tripadviser and husband was desperate to try the curried goat. Lovely service and lovely setting..... we were given a table by the window which would have been fabulous had the view not been obstructed by items being displayed there. As lovely as they were the views you have are fabulous and shouldn't be obstructed in my humble opinion!!

We enjoyed the "Gazers delight", a combination of 3 different currys served with a large bowl of rice and peas washed down with a couple of cocktails all of which were top notch. This ain' t a complaint but its fair to say there was a bit of a wait (busy night me thinks) but it was more than made for by the eclectic decor, the delicious food, heady drinks and the hosting skills of all the whole team so many thanks for a relaxing an enjoyable evening.

Visited this evening as I had read the reviews so thought it warranted a visit. It did not disappoint. Myself and my partner are not keen on chain restaurants and this family run restaurant is a real diamond. We had the grazing for 2, which was delicious and the accompanying rice was first rate. As for the run baba dessert, it was worth the laps around the harbour to burn it off. Service was fab. Good luck to the daughter if she decides on Cardiff Uni. If you ate visiting Brixham then this is the number one place to go.

We visited this amazing restaurant last night. Service was brilliant. Special mention to Verna’s daughter who is super friendly and an excellent waitress.

We can’t come to Brixham and not visit the Pepper Shack - in fact this time we went twice in the week we were there! Food is amazing - really tasty. Service brilliant, so friendly and welcoming. Cocktails great (huge choice) and top it all off, it’s dog friendly too! See you again when we’re back in August!

Booked for a table of 12 for a 40th Birthday at 7.30pm. Arrived on time, only 4 other people in.

The food was fantastic! It was all made fresh to order so took a bit of time but was very much worth it! Plus we got to try all the tasty cocktails while we waited! Really friendly service, would most definite recommend to anyone.

We visited this little gem of a restaurant last night after reading the great reviews and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. Don’t let the unassuming exterior deter you. Great cocktails followed by authentic and delicious Caribbean food - what’s not to love - all served beautifully by a great family. I couldn’t recommend this place more - go if you’re in Brixham and you won’t regret it. Thank you Verna and family for a great evening x

We went tonight (15 May) and had the best meal of our stay in Devon. The service was excellent and the chef Verna came out to chat to us too which us always a nice touch. The food was excellent and I would certainly recommend this to anyone visiting South Devon. We shall make an annual trip here in future!

Visited with my wife during Pirate Weekend the chance of Caribbean was too good to miss. So glad we did not miss this wonderful restaurant.

Fantastic food, great atmosphere and the host really looked after us to make it a very enjoyable experience . So much choice on the menu we will have to be back.

Looking over the harbour and run by husband and wife team, this is an authentic taste of Jamaican cooking. Slightly disappointed that a couple of things on the menu were not available due to supplier problems but Brixham is not entirely on the beaten track I suppose. Gets busy in the summer apparently so you will need to book. Interesting carnival outfits and rugby memorabilia augment the decor - the Armitage Brothers are the sons of the house! Plus a tasty selection of cocktails and mocktails.

Our first visit to The Pepper Shack but definitely wont be the last!

As Brixham locals,a trip to Verna's is always an occasion.Last night was no exception.We usually have the Grazer's dish which is superb,but decided to have a change,with one of us having Jerk chicken & another having Jamaican stewed chicken.WOW!Beautifully cooked,as were everbody else's meals at the table.Lovely to see Verna & John for the first time this year.We will return soon.This restaurant is a one-off in Brixham.

My mother in law had booked us in as she lives here.quitelooking forward to the experience.we asked for cocktails which took an age to arrive and when they did it was only one at a time. My mother in law asked for the mackerel starter but was told that no mackerel had been landed recently as the wind was in the wrong direction??? Even though the mackerel fishing trips were fully booked on the quay and we saw people com ing back with fish. My main was Madras chicken all I could taste was raw spices the meat was tender the juice was like water as were on all our dishes .the service was really slow. But the other two enjoyed there's for me I wouldn't rush back there

X certainly marks the spot for a delicious and memorable meal in Brixham. Not immediately obvious from the street, this first floor restaurant overlooking the harbour is an absolute gem. Simply amazing array of dishes from chef Verna, who will pop out to say hello, and excellent cocktails mixed by her husband. Witty repartee from waitress daughter! The Apple and garlic dumplings are to die for. We had a range of curries, and loved them all. Don’t be scared to try the curry goat, it’s delicious. My husband had the baby back ribs and he bought several jars of the sauce too. Very good value and an experience you’ll never forget.

We are always on the lookout for authentic and different food (as opposed to mass produced dishes, which are simply reheated). My husband enjoyed a prawn starter and loved the mutton stew, which was rich in flavour and really tender. I ate butternut patties to start with, which were spicy and pastry lovely. My fish curry was heaven. The chef, a charming Jamaican lady came out to say hello. We were served by her husband and daughter so it was a real family affair. A real gem.

We stayed in Brixham for a few days over the Easter holidays, having enjoyed the towns great seafood we wanted something different. Pepper Shack is perfect, very flavoursome, authentic, home cooked Caribbean food. Great ambience and friendly staff. Would recommend.
