Vegetarian Food Studio in Cardiff

We come here a lot, one of our favourite restaurants in Cardiff. Really like the thali but if there are four or more of you, you can do a group deal where the chef picks what you eat. We have done that with friends and they loved it. Great dosas!

first of all the delivery was late.. okay can be understood. but the Turmeric milk ordered was spilled because the cup was literally fallen sideways.

The food was not delivered at all. when I called the restaurant, it went to voicemail and I was charged the full amount. Ridiculous!! I had to pay 24.54 for it. Just eat, please sort this.

Ordered the masala dosa with mogo chips, paneer samosas & mutter kachori to share as a starter between three. Homely Indian restaurant in Grangetown.

Escondido a solo 5-10 minutos a pie del concurrido centro, The Vegetarian Food Studio es una verdadera joya escondida. Es claramente amado por los lugareños, ya que ya estaba bastante ocupado a las 12 de la noche cuando llegamos, a pesar de que acababan de abrir. Fuimos por una mezcla de entrantes para compartir, incluyendo el plato mixto para dos (que era ideal) y unos pocos bits extra. Todo estaba perfectamente especiado y lleno de sabor. El chutney de tamarindo que venía con los platos era particularmente delicioso — un punto culminante absoluto! Los precios eran muy razonables, y la comida era excepcional. Sin duda volveremos a visitar!

Like some other innocent reviewers, we were also attracted by the good reviews, authentic food n all. Yes, they are rare in Cardiff being a pure vegetarian restaurant. However, any person who knows what authentic or even an above average vegetarian Indian food (exception: few Gujarati food items) tastes like, must avoid this place completely. One star is for cleanliness & ambience, half star for the quality of food. Food is delivered super quickly since decent appetising food needs time, effort and above all knowledge to prepare. Unappetising food (only few Gujarati food items are an exception, rest is genuinely pathetic). In simple words an insult to a vegetarian cuisine. But one must appreciate, they know how to manage/retain good google reviews. Keep your distance and wallet away from them if you are trying food items other than Gujarati food. Below Average. Cheers! ... I just saw their underline response after 2 years, one can imagine the quality of food they serve and with what attitude both are reflective of each other in their response. Truly an insult to all locals and everyone else.

Our food was delicious as always, and some vegan mango lassi is a real treat!

My favourite Indian restaurant.... I am not vegetarian but the food here is so full of flavour I don't miss having meat in the meal at all. The vegetable samosa are the best I've ever tried (and I spent 1 year in India), and the Thali are a real treat. Always recommending to friends, family and colleagues.

Fast service and great food. Perfect for a lunch break

I really enjoyed my meal here, before a show at the New Theatre. I didn't book and there was plenty of room but it was quite early when I went. I ordered a Masala Chai, Gujarati Thali & paneer and sweetcorn curry.

Lovely little Indian restaurant specialising in Gujarati cuisine. The thali was delicious and very generously proportioned. The place has a simple decor and a very delightful vibe.

I came in at 7pm on Saturday, so it was busy and I came in solo. Unfortunately I didn’t get served for the 25 mins I was there so I left. The staff seemed busy/ preoccupied with other tasks. Perhaps they need to hire more people for the weekend.

The food is superb. Staff were lovely too. A really fantastic variety of dishes that you don’t get in a standard Indian restaurant. Lots of deliciously unusual flavours and huge portions. We’ll definitely be back to work our way through the menu!

Looking at the location and then the exterior, the restaurant promises little. However, the reputation and website isn't false. Service could be a little more attentive and the atmosphere was non existent early on a quiet Tuesday evening but the food is excellent. A variety of dishes not seen on most menus provide difficult choices although there's a thali giving a selection of small tasters and a chef's selection for groups of 4 or more. This is a vegetarian & vegan only restaurant and it's a huge positive.

En Cardiff pensé que tendría la novedad de conseguir una entrega. Debía llegar entre las 8. 05 - 8 . 30 según UberEats. No apareció hasta las 9 . 45 . Llamé al restaurante dos veces y su respuesta fue que serán 10 minutos. Pedí cancelarlo cuando llamé a las 9: 10 , y obtener un reembolso ya que la comida habría estado intransitada durante tanto tiempo, y estaría fría. Se negó. Cuando finalmente llegó fue tibia y probablemente la peor dallia que he probado en mi vida. Podrías contar las lentejas. Sobreprecio y por debajo de la media. Mi primera y última experiencia con Ubereats, y con este restaurante, que había oído que hacía una comida encantadora. Ciertamente no lo fue. ¡Puedo hacer un dahl mucho mejor yo mismo y soy de Ceredigion!

Fantastic food, service and value, as ever.

Great food, we've not been before but will most definitely go back. Service was a little slow due to there only being one person at front of house. Plenty of choice both GF & vegan, will return again when we're not going on to another event.

Very bad experience. Food preparation was the worst. Not even a single dish was prepared properly. We could notice the lack of hygiene also.

Super tasty, I had the vegan Gujarati thali which was delicious. Plenty of other vegan options too which looked great.

A really lovely restaurant with friendly staff and excellent service. Our meal was delicious and very reasonably priced. The menu has a lot of options with every item well marked for vegan, vegetarian, gluten free etc. We will definitely be returning!

Despite all bad reviews, we thought of giving a try. To my surprise my experience was no where matching even a single word people bad in those aggressively written bad reviews. Absolutely lovely food, almost like 'Ghar ka khana'. Recommended visit place for someone looking for healthy, hindu, satvik and proper vegetarian food. With a cozy atmosphere and a menu that boasts a variety of flavors, it’s a place where every dish tells a story of tradition and taste. The service is friendly and attentive, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. Whether you’re a vegetarian or just looking to try something new, this studio is definitely worth a visit. 🌿🍛 Must try Gujarati thali. Parking can be done on cooperation Rd plenty of free parking available on the both side of road. It is 6 minutes walk from the restaurant.

La comida aquí es genial - bastante diferente a un restaurante indio normal, con tantos elementos desconocidos en el menú. No era un fan de las cosas crujientes de color popadom, pero todos los demás platos eran deliciosos. Sin duda volvería de nuevo!

Good- Gujarati thali was good. Decent quantity and variety. Subji and roti too were good. Happy to see big vegetarian menu. 👍 Bad- we had ordered dosa and idli. Big mistake. They bought in 4 pieces of so called idli that was cubical,sour and very hard. Chutney was gooey and sticky probably spoilt. Very sweet sambar. Dosa was sour too. Very dry and not appealing at all. And they charged £7-9 for these. If you can't do south Indian dishes or don't have the batter, please let the customers know. We could have happily ordered dal and roti. It's not fair to charge the same amount if the dishes are nothing south Indian. Kindly see into this team. Best wishes.

Never expected finding proper Gujarati Restaurant in Cardiff. Outstanding food.

The most amazing tasting food I've ever had and the customer service was excellent. Highly recommend, It's our new fave for date night.

Gorgeous food! Huge menu so much choice

Like other folks, we were attracted by the Google reviews to visit this place! No doubt, it is spacious & have nice ambience! Unfortunately, food was very disappointing. Starters were almost different forms of potatoes (frozen) loaded with chillies and smeared in raw oil. The main dish arrived - A vegetarian thali having barfi covered with fungus! Absolutely shocking! How could a named restaurant ( claims serving people nice food) can serve you food with mould and put potential health risks to others. Horrible thing was that the owner never realised or apologised about this and sent a server with a full bill to be paid! After I spoke to owner, she told me ridiculously to take the service charges off and was being rude! I wasn't agree with her offer. Her reaction and words were," that's free food for you, go & don't pay anything ." Which is quite unacceptable & rude towards customers!

I’ve eaten here for years and the food is always great but recently the customer service has started to deteriorate. If you ring for a takeaway it’s hit and miss whether they actually have a driver, this includes weekends when you’d expect to easily order a takeaway. Also, the last time I ate in we asked for a plastic container to take some food home and we got charged. I didn’t like being charged but the bigger problem was the actual price (something like £1.50) meant there’s a big markup on simply taking food home having a meal in the restaurant. Just to stress the food is always great but it would be nice to feel valued as a customer.

On a recent business trip, I really fancied a Gujarati meal. A Google search brought this place up and the reviews looked great....so I thought I would give it a try. (FYI I am Gujarati). The server was efficient and friendly, the resturant has a sort of charm about it. Sadly the food was a let down. I ordered a plain dosa and a mixed platter of snacks, with salted lasi. The lasi was nice (it's really hard to get that wrong!). The plain dosa was not crispy at all. In fact you would expect a dosa to hold up its rolled up shape, not the one that I got.....it was flat, not crispy, and the flavour was only just passable. The plate of mixed small bites was awful....I left most of it. I think the waiter must have thought I was full and offered to pack it for me to take away - I said no thanks. I was genuinely so disappointed, I was looking forward to some homely food, I can't see myself coming back here. I couldn't work out why the reviews were so high, I think all I can put it down to is the the large majority of reviews are from non-gujarati customers, the lack of other options in Cardiff for similar food...... come on Cardiff, you can and should do better. And as for the owners of the resturant, I know you cook better than what you serve at home, do the same in your restaurant so others can appreciate the wonders of Gujarati food like we do at home. I had to grab a subway on my way back to my hotel!

Best and most affordable thali I’ve had in the UK. Puris were great and very generous portion for a thali. I’m convinced anyone who writes a bad review does so for personal gain, because I don’t have a bad thing to say.

Great atmosphere, lovely food which also included a lot of gluten-free. This was my first time at this delightful restaurant and definitely not my last.

Awful attitude on the older lady who was serving us, I had a long black/grey hair in my food which was clearly not one of ours on the table, when I complained she said it was categorically not from their premises, I was absolutely gobsmacked because upon closer inspection she had several very similar loose hairs on her person, I pointed this out and we were asked to leave... Which was fine as nobody was happy to finish their meals, as we were putting our coats on she came over with the bill for the meals that we had just been ordered to leave! 😕..... Table was also sticky Avoid this place

It was a wonderful opportunity to explore Indian style Vegeterian food at this place. The food served was tasty and delicious. Nice ambience. Overall, A must visit place if you are exploring Indian cuisine in Cardiff.

Best restaurant in Wales! The food is consistently amazing and they're a friendly place to visit. One bad thing is the smaller portions of the thalis - why the shrinkage?

The Vegetarian Food Studio is one of my favourite places for food, I cannot recommend it highly enough! As a vegetarian it’s nice that the entire menu’s vegetarian with lots of vegan options. Everything I’ve had from here over the years has been lovely. I’ve taken non-vegetarians here for food and they’ve enjoyed it too. Favourites of mine are the Dosas, which have a side of Daal soup. The Mango Lassi’s lovely too. The Thaali’s also really nice, you get a selection of different things to try and it changes each day. The mixed platter is nice, you get a lot of starters there. You can also buy some of the snacks to take away with you from the counter. It’s a nice relaxed and informal place to have food. I like the murals on the wall and the embroidered tablecloths under the glass on the tables. It’s an unpretentious place which lets the food be the star of the show.

One of my favorite places to have Indian food!! Really cozy atmosphere and the food is so flavourful you never know what to choose from the menu. The stuff there are also very friendly and welcoming, makes you feel like home:)

The food is fairly priced but microwaved, reheated, or cooked from frozen. Not what we paid for. It was clearly not fresh. Service was slow despite it being dead; this should’ve been an obvious sign to avoid this place. Our concern came from the bad stomach we got from this place and hygiene concerns when we peaked into the kitchen from the side door. I noticed they bring their food from the back lane across the street. I assume they have a kitchen or storage somewhere down there. It’s weird they transport it from the lane and in the streets; surely that’s not very hygienic. There are a few other reviews that have mentioned these concerns so I’m not surprised we had the same experience. The reviews should’ve been another sign to avoid this place. Good concept. poor management, and execution

Staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly, the Thali Special was incredible and great value, had a fantastic time. Would absolutely visit again.

Came because of the reputation, but left very disappointed. Seemed like the onion bhajis had been microwaved so were more like muffins, while the tofu was rubbery and squishy and when you pressed it, water and oil oozed out of it so totally inedible. Didn't eat the tofu and complained, so thought they would take it off the bill but was still on there when we came to pay. Won't be coming again.

I started eating at the Vegetarian Food Studio when it wasn't in even in it's current premises. That is quite some time ago. On my most recent visit I went for my old favourite a Dosa. The Sambar that accompanied the Dosa was beautiful as was the coconut chutney. The menu is so vast that you'll never get tired of visiting. The owner and his family and staff are really friendly and make you feel very welcome. It's also great to see, on a big board at the front of the Restaurant, all the awards the Vegetarian Food Studio has won over the years.

I can't eat Indian food any more as I have developed a cardamom allergy. However, if I was going to take a chance and bring an EpiPen to a restaurant, it would be this one, as the food is beyond delicious.

Every time I have eaten here, the food has been amazing! Great choice and excellent value for money. Just wish they’d deliver to London!

One of the worst food I ever had in cardiff strictly not recommended

Sorry, but it is the worst indian restaurant I have ever been to. In addition, the price-performance ratio is questionable. The food didn't seem fresh (frozen vegetables?) and was way too spicy (ordered mild). Furthermore, the food is not at all digestible - it is still heavy in the stomach the next day - how can that be with indian food?

If you are a veggie or a vegan and happen to be in Cardiff make the trip here. They are specialists and the menu shows this. Great staff, banging food. Yum.

Great Indian food, the best in Cardiff, try the sweets as well they are home made quality

I found service and atmosphere very good however food was not fresh for example rotli were not hot and fresh which is the basic thing we expect from Indian restaurants. I wouldn’t suggest south indian food like dosa. I have tried many places in UK and found to be below average here. I felt that prices may be higher with respect to taste and portion for individual items we got but Thali may be good options in terms of price (though we didn’t try but noticed most people was going with that). I am not local wales resident so don’t know the norms but I felt that charging 10% service charges without mentioning anywhere were unreasonable though this as total of bill was not big for me but I expect them to boldly write that.

Just recently been twice. Food is really poor. Seems like the number of people have completed stopped coming here as it was dead both times. No competition means they are able to keep serving substandard food. My Chilli chips at £5.95 was terrible, did not look like it was cooked fresh. I said I wouldn't go the last time and I thought I would try again, but it was the same. If anyone else thinking of starting a pure vegetarian Indian restaurant who is passionate and ready to serve fresh food. Cardiff is waiting. Just seen the Owners response... I reviewed this place 4 stars 5 years ago. If you are going to get defensive everytime someone posts there honest feedback and you respond defensively means you are not open to listen and take on board whats happening. Alot of friends and family are saying the same exact thing. We are indian we know what Indian food should taste like. These people know and I know what it was like before, it's not the same. Whether you care or not is another matter. But be humble and take notice. Or else more people like me will stop coming. By seeing your manner of response to my review and others that I have read. I feel like downgrading my 3 star service rating to a one. My honest opinion.. your food is not worth the price you are charging.

Just visiting Cardiff and wanted some home made tasty Gujarati food. The food was absolutely delicious and great value. Would definitely come back when we next come to Cardiff.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE! Worst service and food ever waited for more than 15mins for just tap water and had to ask thrice for such horrible service, the food was full of oil, I had to wipe the excess oil and the owner was very rude!

Good vegan options. Would recommend trying Gujarati thali and Gujarati dishes from a menu, especially shaaks and rotli.

We know Indians have the best vegetarian cuisine in the world and this restaurant proves it. I've been here three times because it's local and always been so impressed. However, something happened today that takes this restaurant to the next level. I ordered something unfamiliar today which was described as fried lentil balls - what arrived was unlike what I imagined it would be and tasted more like bread. I simply pointed it out to the waiter without complaining or asking for anything but he could tell I was disappointed by the order. Without saying anything, he returned in minutes with a dosa dish to replace the order. This was pure class and just goes to show how great they are here. If you're thinking about going, don't hesitate - it's a brilliant place to eat really tasty food.

Everything was sweet( like who makes sweet sambar and chutney)? I'm a south Indian and the south Indian food that they sell here is nothing close to being anything south indian. Since it's a north Indian place, I tried their onion pakoras but guess what, they were stale and completely mediocre. Pakoras are never served this way( the size was literally the size of my fist clutch) and they were completely soggy and spongy served with Tamarind chutney. It felt like eating a rat-trap food and when we escalated it to the manager, she was really rude and dismissed it utterly. Completely dissatisfied!

The food is delicious and well presented, the restaurant is also clean and comfortable and our waitress was polite and friendly. The restaurant is a bit like a cafeteria but that is only a minor thing.

I ordered chole bhature and some chaat. The chaat was a big let down, (who puts kurmura in sev puri). Chole bhature was just edible enough .

Used to be a really great place went here from day 1 unfortunately past year or so standards have dropped , the thali is expensive and often your just given some chick peas in a sauce as main which is a really cheap easy dish , the food is massively over spiced and bland such a shame used to be one of my favourite places in Cardiff but it just seems like they are out to maximise profit and the food has suffered

It was very bad food I found a cockroach in my food and when I told the manager I was kicked out of the shop and they were very rude to me. No apologies I am very saddened and upset with the way I have been treated in the shop

The Gujurati Thali Special is incredible value and absolutely delicious - if you still have space afterwards (it's a hefty portion) the shrikand is well worth a go too. Nice family, nice food 👌

First time eating here after always hearing fab things! Didn’t know what to choose so was recommend the Gujarati Thali! It did not disappoint, far too much for one person so do make sure you share! We also ordered the potato bhajis and hot moto (ridiculously hot!) This dish was a brilliant introduction to veggie cuisine and lots of dishes to try! The only reason not 5 out if 5 was the price of drinks and his long it took to bring them to table! Very expensive for what was selected (Diet Coke, milkshake and juice) and we all had soft drinks! Overall lovely lunch experience, nice and cool venue with friendly service!

Went there for dinner, food was OK not as good as expected and the Dosa was soggy rather than crisp. The strange thing is they only sell wine by the bottle not by the glass. When questioned they said they were too busy Odd

Bit nothingy really and bought in Dosas a no no. Overpriced and wine only by the bottle not the glass. Weird

Over all had a nice meal. Channa batura and Rajma was very nice. Dhai puri and aloo papdi chat was good. Best to avoid Chilli paneer. Masala chai was a disappointment especially as we have had very good chai in the past. Today it was just hot lightly spiced milk and quite expensive at £4.95.

Highly recommended. I do not know if it is authentic or not (as I have never been to India before) but from my own perspective, it tasted good and the price was fair. Customer service is also great.
