They advertised half a lobster, it was just a tail and swimming in garlic so that’s all you could taste. Asked for a drink three times, it never came. Asked for the bill twice. Over priced for substantial food. Poor service.

Stayed at this hotel on a 2 night Itison deal and added a 3rd night, so glad we did. With only 4 resident rooms the service is very personal and first class, nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The room isn't huge but spotlessly clean and very comfortable with a few nice touches and everything you need We hadn't planned to eat in the hotel on 3 nights but we did as the food was so excellent at dinner! Breakfast is made to order ( excellent system of completing order night before) and is first class. Would definitely recommend for meals and accommodation, and hope to return.

Nice pub and friendly staff, before ordering I asked the waitress what the difference was between the small fish and large fish, I explained to her that normally a large fish was 2 fillets and as I wasn’t that hungry one would be enough… The waitress then explained that the large fish was a fillet with an additional small price of fish on top, with this I ordered the small fish…when the meal arrived I was flabbergasted to see what I can only say was nothing more than a fish goujon! To be fair I have seen bigger fish fingers…at £12.95 it wasn’t value for money and a pint of Guinness also at £5.80 is incredible, small village with city prices..I’ll no be back!

Was here on 13th April with a group of 4 of us booked in advance. We each ordered a starter and a main (between the 4 of us - the lobster bisque 🦞 Ramen, Haggis/Black Pudding fritters, Pan fried Pheasant Breast, Aberdeen Angus Burgers with Bacon & Cheese and two bottles of house red/white wine). The service was genuinely friendly and appropriately attentive. The food was absolutely beautiful. Had our Ruby Wedding dinner in the Law Room on 14 Apr 2024 and it was amazing. There were 40 guests in our party and the meal service was excellent. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed the menu choices, the presentation and the quality of the meals provided. The servers were so pleasant and nothing was any problem to them. All in all this made for a very relaxed event, just what we’d hoped for. The hotel was also busy with other diners and credit must be given to the kitchen staff for managing such large numbers whilst never compromising on quality. From the initial contact with the hotel to the celebration itself we have nothing but the utmost praise, this family run hotel is such a pleasant change from bigger corporate run hotels and we would heartily recommend the Upper Largo for food and events.

We had planned on coming here for a long time after being told how good it was. 4.4 star on Google so surely it would be good. Staff - Very friendly and polite front of house staff. Cant fault them at all. 5/5. Food - My wife and I both ordered the Sunday Roast special. Order the Mac n Cheese for our toddler. Everything came out fairly quick but my wife and I both looked at each other and nearly burst out laughing. The amount of food was shocking. 3 bits of tattie which looked like they were roasted on a luke warm radiator, a few bits of veg (carrots were cooked ok). The yorkie pudding was soggy as everything was drowned in the gravy. The only saving grace was the well cooked beef. I was nearly finished by the time the waiter had the chance to ask "how was everything?" My daughters Mac n Cheese portion was bigger than ours and looked great. I was jealous... 2/5 Drinks - Wifes pint of Heverlee had no head whatsoever as "the pipes have been dodgy recently" tasted ok though. My St. Andrews Brewing Co. IPA was fine. My Guinness was probably the worst poured Guinness Ive ever seen in my life (probably because the young staff havent been taught how to pour it properly) it had a about 2 inches of head on it, it looked like an ice cream sundae. 2/5 Wish we ordered the fish or the burgers as they looked really nice. A roast is meant to be something special and filling. But instead Im left tucking into the mountain of leftover Mac n Cheese.

Coffee served was also very good and strong - this is often a disappointment but not on this occasion. Thoroughly recommended and we'll hopefully be back at some point in the future.

Nice place to visit and staff helpful and welcoming for our lunchtime visit. Nice open restaurant and was sat in conservatory window that was clean, not sticky like our previous place we had tried on same day. Not cramped for space. Menu choice was good and reasonable priced. My wife had scampi and I ordered reasonably priced Lobster with sheeted and bacon chips. My wife’s meal was good and mine looked great but the lobster, albeit looked great was not. It was rubbery and almost inedible. The cheese chips and bacon was too heavily loaded with cheese that in my opinion was not to my taste. It congealed basically to a solid lump and you had to cut and eat with a knife and fork. Lobster cooking, I would have thought was something, in this locality especially, would take pride in cooking. Either frozen and blasted in microwave or just overcooked but I suspect the former might be the truth. I did mention to the staff on being asked f meal was ok and they showed empathy but nothing else. Pity as I so looked forward to my lobster first I had since Caribbean cruise 10+ years ago. I would go back but would leave lobster in the freezer and order something else.

Went with friends in a party of five. Service was friendly and efficient. Main courses were tasty and enjoyed by everyone. We were presented with the dessert menu and two ordered the Dark Chocolate & Coconut Tart with Coconut ice cream. However, when it came it had chocolate ice cream and the tart was full of chopped nuts which one of our party can't eat. When we asked the waitress about the nuts not being mentioned on the dessert description on the menu she checked with the chef. He confirmed it was indeed nuts. And when we asked about the chocolate ice cream we were told that they hadn't been able to source coconut flavoured ice cream for a while now so substituted chocolate instead. Forehand mention of this and the inclusion of nuts would've been welcome when ordering. I've yet to see any traces of coconut whatsoever in this dish either in the tart or ice cream. Luckily my friend isn't allergic to nuts or it could've been a different story. She just can't eat them. So the dessert was wasted and no discount offered. Not satisfactory customer service in my opinion. May I suggest you either change the description of the dessert to reflect the ingredients or warn customers that they will not receive the item advertised and take your chances if you have a nut allergy or intolerance.

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely lunch in the conservatory. He had breaded haddock and I had the posh Mac’n’cheese and both were perfect. The fish came with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce and the mac’n’cheese was mixed with smoky bacon and langoustine tails and was accompanied by skinny fries and a dressed salad. For pud we chose a sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and tablet ice cream, and a plate of mixed ice creams. Again, not a word of complaint about either. The service was very good too. We have been visiting this restaurant for several years and gave it a well-deserved 5 star review in 2017. It was about 18 months since our last visit due to Covid travel bans etc and we were very much looking forward to our recent visit. However, menus and quality of food have changed, not for the better, and the Covid safety measures shown on a huge board outside were not all adhered to. The burger we had was very nice but the fish was tiny and overdone. Our chips were no longer the lovely ones we used to get - these were extremely skinny frozen fries, many of which had either been reheated or overdone - they were like crisps. The restaurant conservatory is a lovely place to eat, but we felt corners had been cut as far as the food is concerned. Maybe things will improve again soon- we hope so.

We went in to the bar where the tables are close together and there are no windows or doors open to allow ventilation. I don’t understand why during these times, food can’t be served outdoors until the restaurant stops serving. We felt very uncomfortable and basically ate and left. Food is always nice but we left as quickly as possible.

Happy to have been a patron of the hotel for both food and drink over the past few weeks since reopening post lockdown. There food is outstanding! Have spent a fair bit of money on both over the past weeks too. But on visiting over the past few nights have seen a side of the place I do not like. While I'm all for chat and banter between staff and patrons and I like to be pleasant and well mannered I would expect the same in return, recently I've overheard staff discussing patrons in font of myself and other patrons in a derogatory manor, been asked to take a seat at a table to await being served a drink and having to wait 40 minutes to be asked what I want ,basically being purposefully ignored while others have directly approached the bar and been served almost immediately, and having asked for a drink after my dinner only to be told by staff Laura "I'll think about it" and then dissapear for over 30 minutes before I eventually just went to the bar and payed my bill. I also overheard members of staff discussing a patron who had jokingly made a complaint that they should think themselves lucky they have a place to come and drink post covid at all. Staff asking a number of patrons at 9:45 pm to finish their drinks as they were closing as they wanted away early. All in all pretty shoddy service all round over the last few visits having spent a fair bit of money between food and drink. Not sure I'll be back as I believe paying customers should expect and be given respect as I do to the staff.

A large glass of vino was served chilled to perfection closely followed by the fish with risotto . It truly was a fantastic choice by both of us , herself couldn't quite finish it off but I manfully managed , just . After a wee break to recover the Pavlova and Coconut Tart followed on . Our rooms (two twins) were spotlessly clean, warm, comfortable and quiet. Plenty of extra towels, pillows, blankets in each room. Lovely set of Molton Brown mini toiletries which was a wow factor (2x shower gel, 2x shampoo, 2x conditioner & 2xbody lotion in each room). Great showers. Breakfast was a real treat with and the porridge with berry compote on top and white chocolate at the bottom was superb. Full cooked breakfasts were delicious with perfect crispy bacon and local sausages. Another wow factor was 2 half litre jugs of apple and orange juice on our table, rather than the usual tiny glasses of juice in many hotels. The lovely restaurant looks out to sea so views are lovely. The bill for our stay was more than reasonable and tbh I would’ve been happy to pay more. Had a visit as a wee mid-pandemic birthday treat with my family. On arrival, we had to wait outside to be let in, and there seemed no way to let staff know we were there (perhaps there's CCTV, I didn't notice any). We weren't left hanging about too long, but we were getting a bit confused as to whether we should knock or not!All staff wore masks and explained the one way system. Menus looked to be wipe-clean. Where we sat, there was a couple within 1m distance sitting behind me, our chairs were pretty much back to back, which felt a bit close, but as we were back to back I guess it was ok.I had the £15 steak night Sirloin steak with fries, mushrooms and onion rings, our son had the fish and chips. Everything was cooked well (always a pleasure when a medium-rare steak comes just right). Staff were attentive and friendly. There was a lovely wee dog wandering about (called Pepper I believe), and was noticed sitting staring at diners at one point. It was a Monday evening but thought I'd call to check a table would be free, I'm glad I did. The busiest Monday night I've seen for a long time in a family friendly restaurant. 3 courses for under £15 and each course worth it. The friendliest staff and very attentive. I'm going back!

Eventually got seated at our table after standing and waiting for someone to notice us. At the table there was was rubbish on our seats, ripped napkins all over the floor and the table had not been cleaned. A couple that came in behind us got served and there order taken, while we were still awaiting to be asked for our drinks and giving menus. Shocking service wont be back.

Lovely food overall. Really good service. Haggis starter and fishcakes were best dishes. Great real chips. Peppercorn sauce with the haggis was superb. Dessert disappointing as the creme caramel and apple tartlet were mediocre at best.

It could also be the start of the East neuk depending where you are coming from. This is a nice little hotel and restaurant. It is worth booking as it can get busy with the three courses for £14.95 lunch menu. The restaurant is nice, clean and very Scottish with the decor. The staff were all very pleasant. The food is ok, I will go back and try something away from the deal lunch menu and give it a go. The place is well located if you have been traveling along the east neuk coastline.

My wife and I had a pleasant walk with our dog from lower Largo, we were met by a lovely waitress who advised us where to sit with our dog We had a choice of menus, bar snacks, an extensive menu and a 3 courses for £14.95 which we ate from. Food was fantastic, service great, waitresses so friendly and efficient, also made a fuss of our dog which always goes down well. I had just been stung as I arrived and one waitress went in search of the first aid kit to see how she could help. Wonderful place to have lunch

Interesting food and local company made this an enjoyable experience. We tried the black pudding cakes (deep fried) as well as the haggis cakes (same), then pasta mains. Plenty of food but the beer choice could have been better.

Ate here after a good experience a few years ago, and pleased to say if anything it's even better than last time!We had a battered haggis starter in a pepper sauce, followed by breaded haddock and pork chops. There was a great range of choices including bar snacks and a three courses for £14 option which is great value. The meals were excellent as was the service and the choice of drinks. There are some good places to eat in this area but I would certainly recommend this hotel. Oh,and dogs welcome in the bar!

Have past this restaurant on numerous occasions on way to St Andrews, and always said would like to visit, which we did on Sunday.Did not book, and young girl gave us table in the bar, three different menus, and we opted for the 3 Course Sunday Dinner deal at great value £14.59.We both had spring rolls to start, and the Sunday Beef Roast Dinner, both excellent, the only problem was we had ordered our dessert at the start of or meal, and it took 20 minutes for two strawberry tarts to arrive, and we were asked three different times had we ordered desserts.Would not put me off further visit, and would recommend, hopefully just a one off, first visit.

Excellent service. Food was really tasty and came piping hot. Excellent menu however we opted for the steak special. Both steaks ordered came as requested with garnish of battered onion, mushrooms and tomato. The chips, vegetables and salad were served separately as preferred. The restaurant was busy and had a good atmosphere.

Was very busy and the service was a little slow but it just allowed us to chat and relax between courses. Had a wide variety of dishes which were all excellent, the salmon was exceptional as was the Lamb, everything was hot, well presented and tasty. Won't leave it so long this time before we return

Three course set menu at £19.95 was excellent value, and the best meal out I have had in ages. Waitress was great never stopped (did not get her name but she has size 2 feet if that helps). We would all happily go back as the service the food and the price was great. If there is a better place to eat in the East Neuk of Fife at that price it must really be something special.

The staff were simply brilliant - attentive, professional, friendly we could go on and on. 2 prawn cocktail starters; the smallest and cheapest of prawns(?) on a bed of large rocket with 1 half cherry tomato, truly bloody awful. 1 Haddock, chips and peas, all straight from the freezer and as a fisherman, it was most certainly not haddock. 2 x Steak pie and chips? well no, that's stew with a piece of pastry, which my friend decided would not be out of place in a dogs bowl. 1 x Salmon fillets ? over micro waved and drier than the Sahara desert in a drought .... why call yourself experts in food when this was worse than 8 year old children let loose in Farmfoods, could achieve ? ..... Without doubt, this was the worst meal I have ever paid for, you should be ashamed of yourself for allowing the public to be conned like this. I cannot believe how bad this experience was. Advice to people who like edible food; drive to Lidl's in Leven and suffice yourself with a pre packed sandwich, it won't be very good, but it'll be a damned sight better than the fayre on offer at the Upper Largo Hotel. What and absolute embarrassment to anyone related to Scotland. ....... btw, no staff over 20 visible.

We didn't stay but went for lunch one Sunday. We booked but several groups turned up without booking and were able to get a table. The menu is the usual pub grub but nicely presented and service was quick. Ae chose the roast beef, meatball and curry with icecream and coffee to follow. All very tasty The welcome and service were frienly and efficient and the dining room light airy and spacious.

What a disappointment. I found the Bothy at Boglily on TA, loved the look of the place, the gorgeous photos of cooked food on their site and the good reviews. We are doing a road trip and this was going to be our Sunday morning treat. The car park was jammed with cars and we saw people standing in a queue to pet baby goats. Upon entering the inviting Bothy and asking a young man for a table, we were told that we couldn’t bring our dog in. Fair enough. Not every dining establishment is dog-friendly. Though I was a bit surprised as the restaurant is in a buffalo farm, there’s a petting zoo and it’s in the countryside. The sun was shining so I asked if we could order our meal and sit at the table on the deck, directly next to the door of The Bothy (see photo for proximity). The young man’s response was that they don’t offer takeaway. I queried whether a table one step from the door qualified as takeaway. It reminded me of the TV ad with the man trying to buy potatoes at a farm shop and being told that he can only pay with digital currency. People taking themselves so seriously that they don’t think of the customer experience. We had driven up from our holiday cottage at Kinghorn especially to get a nice cooked breakfast from their lovely menu, so my surprise and disappointment were apparent. I was directed to the outdoor kiosk they call the Milk Bar to order something from their limited selection. We ordered one Double Cheese Toastie with fries, a latte, an affogato milkshake ( made with buffalo milk ice cream) and a scone, which was on their menu. The two lovely servers told me that they don’t sell scones outside and I would have to go to the Bothy Café to get one. When I explained that I had been told up there that I couldn’t get anything from them takeaway, the young woman offered to go get one for me. They were both very sweet and I apologised for my previous grumpiness. Unfortunately, it wasn’t worth the trouble. The cheese toastie and fries were served in a cardboard tray. The toastie was on “cheap white bread” according to my partner. I didn’t taste it. The fries and the milkshake however, were excellent. My scone was dry, cold and crumbled into breadcrumb texture when I tried to spread some butter on it. The crumb was impossible to pick up and eat but my dog liked it. It wasn’t worth eating for me as it then began to rain and we had to head for the car. I can’t help but think that the very cheerful, welcoming and upmarket website promises more than it delivers.
