It was my 21st birthday celebration at the restaurant, but unfortunately, it didn't go well. While the restaurant seemed decent, it didn't quite live up to the expectations of a 5-star hotel located in the home of golf. Our main issue arose with the table placement; we were seated in a cramped corner with hardly any view. When we politely asked the staff if we could change tables, the response was incredibly rude. We were informed there were no available tables and essentially told to leave if we weren't satisfied. Despite this, we chose to stay. Additionally, the staff failed to offer us the option of using the cloakroom, despite noticing our struggle with our jackets. Moving on, when we ordered wine, it was poured in a rather unprofessional manner, with bits of cork ending up in our glasses. To sum up, I cannot recommend this place at all. While the hotel itself may be satisfactory, the restaurant experience falls far short of expectations

We were staying in the hotel and had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Both meals were very good with friendly staff. Dinner menu is focussed towards meat eaters but we had lovely fish and vegetarian dishes. As it is fixed price for 2 courses at dinner then it does seem expensive for non meat eaters especially when adding in cost of side dishes. Food was lovely though and beautifully presented. Great views over the golf course and up to the buildings of St Andrews itself.

Good food with a stunning view - unfortunately let down by bad service. We had to wait over an hour between the starter and our main course and one member of our party was given the wrong main course. We didn’t end up staying for dessert. The staff explained that the kitchen is cooking for two restaurants, but if this is the case then they need to hire more chefs. Such a shame.

Whatever you order, don’t pick the pizza! It was awful and looked like something a child had made. Zero flavour. Cheese grated and dashed on in a basic way. Quite salty. No flavour or depth to the tomato sauce at all. A poor experience and probably the worst pizza I’ve ever ordered. The lunch was saved only by the view and the impeccable service of the lovely, friendly, welcoming staff throughout the resort. I would not have lunch there again, but I would return for drinks and cocktails with a nice view.

Very nice restaurant with friendly staff! Since we had a diner, we couldn’t enjoy the view. This we went the next day in the bar for a coffee. We had the rib-eye which was cooked as ordered. We ordered 2 glass of wine, which was far too warm. So we ask for new ones. No complaint from the sommelier.

We visited the Restuarant for a Christmas treat. Food couldn’t be faulted. It was perfect. What let the experience down was lack of trained waiting staff. They were inattentive, inexperienced and this lack of attention to detail spoiled the dining experience. On arrival we were taken to our table and our coats were bunched over the back of the chair, the wine we had with our meal was poured and then placed on another table with us having to ask for refills. The cote de boeuf was served to us with no elegance, it was shoved on to our plate. When it came to liqueurs and coffee the waiter didn’t know what we were ordering, despite a familiar liqueur being on the menu. The waiter wasn’t sure if ‘they’could do an Irish coffee. The Restuarant music playing was dim Christmas songs and really lacked an atmosphere or genteel ambience. The hotel itself is in need of some tlc this Restuarant is tired and needs to be revitalised. Sadly this is now our last time here, with so many wonderful chefs and establishments in the vicinity, the Old Course must raise its game. The menu prices certainly don’t reflect that the experience would be quite as mediocre.

Mixed feelings about this place. There is certainly room for improvement considering the prices paid. The three course meal we had was superb and so was the service , other than one member of staff. One waitress stood out for all the wrong reasons. We arrived with our parents, who are in the mid eighties , to be greeted by this lady who could not find our reservation - these things happen - but she was unapologetic and could see my parents were concerned but did nothing to allay this - just looked annoyed and eventually barged off to find another staff member who found the reservation immediately and was lovely ; saying that he would have found us a table in any event. There was no apology from the female waitress and, instead, she marched us over to a table. On my side of the table my chair was up against a pillar which meant I was seated on the corner of the table rather than in the middle. When I asked if the table could be moved a little she said she would send some over and, again ,there was no apology. She didn’t send anyone over and eventually we had to move the table ourselves ! Not something one would expect to have to do ourselves in a restaurant of this calibre. The only other disappointment were the sides which we ordered after being encouraged to do so by the waiter. We opted for some vegetables and a tomato and basil salad. Well , please take a look at the £4.50 tomato and basil salad that I hope to upload here. Happy shopper budget tomatoes and no sign of any basil. We left the whole thing. I am surprised that a chef in this establishment would let this go out of their 5 star kitchen and I would certainly be embarrassed to do so. The vegetables were not much better . A luke warm soggy medley simply stuffed in a cup. Other than that it was a lovely meal with lovely staff and great views of the golf course. I sincerely hope these comments will be taken on board and look forward to returning to a more friendly greeting and ordering the sides to see if these have been improved upon. At present - order them at your peril !

This restaurant is massively overpriced for what you get and has a tendency to overlook the solo diner. Had to walk out after 20mins waiting to be served and saw the serving person take an order for a group who had come in much later. Maybe they thought the gratuity would be better. Not at all impressed and would not recommend.

It's been a while since I've written a review on Tripadvisor, but after visiting the Road Hole at St Andrew's Old Course Hotel, it became clear it was time to dust the keyboard off and return from review semi-retirement. If I was to sum up the experience in a word, it would be 'perfection'. What is about to following is a hugely glowing review but with one big criticism. First we were warmly welcomed in and guided to the bar as we were 20 minutes or so early. We chose some drinks and in perfect timing, a gentleman glided over to take our order. Shortly after, we were guided through to our table which had stunning views over the course, beach and the firth of Tay. Many a moment was spent in content happiness gazing out to this view with the finest food in front of us and a refreshing drink in hand. Again, perfectly timed, a waitress named Claire swished over to us to first take a drinks order then shortly after take a food order. It goes without saying, her attentiveness and timing was impeccable and she was very warm and friendly. However, what took her service to the next level and helped make the whole experience extra-special was her culinary knowledge. Rather than simply taking our order, she was able to offer in-depth suggestions and insight into the dishes, appearing to have even a better understanding of the preparation of food than many chefs elsewhere. It was her insight that led to us ordering the special - Cote de Boeuf - the best steak dish I've ever had. And on that note, let's get onto the food. That word again - perfection. We had the scallops as a starter and the beef special for a main, and my god, were both cooked to absolute perfection. The scallops were an absolute masterpiece, and were cooked so beautifully that it was like a cross between finely-calibrated science and art. The beef special was so tender, attentively cooked and crafted that the knife glided through it like butter and the flavours were something else. The caramelised natural flavours of the steak were amplified through culinary craftsmanship, and combined with the blue-cheese sauce, they were like a finely-honed orchestra of depth of flavour. I've had many a steak in many a restaurant. The number one podium spot for the greatest steak I'd ever had was served in a French-style restaurant many years ago, which had never been bettered for over a decade. This changed on 22 June when that French restaurant was knocked to second place on the podium by the chefs at the Road Hole. The service throughout was also perfect. A perfect amount of time was given to decide on drinks and menu items - not too long, not too rushed. The arrival of the starter, main and dessert were timed to perfection, again, not too rushed, not too long. Even the bill at the end was delivered to timing perfection. The waiters and waitresses glided around, always being available but never appearing to encroach on your peace and space and their manner was always warm, subtle and thoroughly focussed on the diners. To finish, we now come to my only criticism. The food was so beautifully prepared, that as well as of course asking for my regards to be given to the chefs, I also looked up the Road Hole website page to hopefully see the head chef and the team and find out more about them. However I could find no such information. In my opinion, that sort of skill and attention to detail should mean that the team shouldn't be faceless!

We ate Sunday lunch in the Road Hole restaurant and the views overlooking the Old Course and courses beyond are simply stunning and what any golfer worldwide dreams off. The food was well cooked and presented with reasonable portion sizes. However the quality of service was lackadaisical and more akin to a 3 star restaurant. We had a bottle of white wine with our meal and rather than leaving it in a cooler at the table it was taken away to a central storage area. This would have been OK if the waiter had been attentive and kept our glasses topped up but on two occasions we had to catch the attention of a waiter and ask for our glasses to be refilled. It was a similar situation for coffee where we had to wait almost half an hour for it to be served. Overall an enjoyable dining experience but, taking into account the poor level of service, certainly not one worthy of 5 stars.

Surprised to read that service was bad from previous reviews. The young gentleman were very attentive in a restaurant without much atmosphere. Food was very below average I wished we ate from the market menu that was included in our deal. We are surprised it holds a rosette status. The hotel and sraff have been excellent, it is very disappointing that the food has not lived up to this. Everything about the hotel has been amazing, but this has been a real let it down. We will be opting for the pub grub at the jigger if allowed, fingers crossed the pub grub does what it says on the tin.

Have been dining at the Road Hole for many years now, always at Christmas time, and it has always been a 5 star experience. This time was no different, every course cooked to perfection, plated perfectly and totally delicious. But from previous years it makes me a little sad to see the menu become somewhat downgraded and limited. It seems to be trending towards being just a grill restaurant - for main course, the options were steak, steak, steak, venison, cauliflower steak, or halibut. Not being a steak/red meat fan, that leaves just one choice for me. As luck would have it, a great choice that suits me well, but still. In my opinion, the chef and team there are so talented that they're wasted just turning out steaks. The scallops starter and apple millefuille dessert prove that. What's happened to the days of the 7 course taster menu? Hopefully this steak-focus is simply a Covid necessity and the menu will expand again soon. The price is certainly still at fine-dining levels. But with the Swilkin loft next door (where we haven't been) offering more variety I really hope the vision here isn't to lose fine dining and have the Road Hole become an expensive Sands grill in essence - as I said, it has been a masterclass in fine dining for so long that would be a real shame. One other slight wrong note - no dessert wine available on the day (from only one menu option by the glass) and the port ordered as a replacement had also ran out. Not a disaster but again, hoping that isn't indicative of a move away from a proper fine dining experience. However, to come back - the meal itself was truly superb, a great experience. Staff were excellent as always too.

I wish we hadn't come back here. The first time we stayed at the hotel and had breakfast in the Road Hole every morning, everything was wonderful. This time, we came for dinner to celebrate an 80th birthday. Last time we were there in April and maybe the main season has a negative impact on the service, as it gets so busy?I had announced that we are celebrating a big birthday and at the end of dinner, when dessert was served, no mention was made; no candle, nothing. When our table started to sing Happy Birthday, the waiter seemed to remember and said to me: "I didn't forget, wait, wait..." and ran off, to come back with a plate that had "Happy Birthday" written on it. Sorry, not impressive at all for a restaurant of that caliber. And no apologies.I don't like pretentious and there was an air of snobbery there when we ordered our food and drinks. The menu omits to describe dishes in detail, which resulted in certain sides to be on the plates that were unexpected. I am not a picky eater but our company is very picky and were too polite to complain but obvious to us, not enjoying the surprise ingredients. When ordering dessert, I asked if there was chocolate with the fruit mousse, and the waiter ensured me there wasn't. Then he came back after a while to tell me that there IS chocololate in the dessert. Why couldn't this be mentioned on the menu?Overall, we were disappointed that the birthday wasn't properly acknowledged and that the lack of detail on the menu caused our company to feel uncomfortable about their food. For the premium we paid at this restaurant, I expected more. As I sad, breakfast there was amazing....

I want to clarify my rating. The food and its presentation rate a 5. But our experience rates a 2 - and that is a generous assessment. We wanted to love this restaurant. It has the perfect location, excellent kitchen staff, an interesting menu, and an association with a great hotel in a world class golfing destination. But the front of the house absolutely ruins what should be a great experience with their sluggish service, inattentiveness, and complete lack of organization. At least that was the case for our visit. We were a group of 14 which here is not out of the norm. Groups of golfers flock to this town and other restaurants handle groups of our size beautifully. But from the start the staff struggled here. There were a couple other tables in the restaurant, all staggered with times for dining, so it should not have overwhelmed them.We were seated and water was poured. Not long after our meal orders were taken and we were assured the sommelier would be over to take our wine orders. 20 minutes later, just before starters were served, no sommelier. Finally I called our server over and asked for someone to take an order for wine. The same man who seated us came over and seemed annoyed to have to answer questions about different options. He was not at all helpful. We only saw the sommelier when he came by to refill wine glasses. If that was the sommelier - the only giveaway was the grape pin on his lapel. He never introduced himself. The starters and mains were incredible. Each was beautifully plated with terrific flavors. This is where the restaurant shines. The kitchen staff is to be commended for their creativity and skill. Desserts were sublime. Requesting the check is where things turned further south. My husband had, when we were seated, asked if each couple could receive their check separately and was assured it would be no problem. But when checks were requested it took 45 minutes to receive them — we looked over at one point and three people were huddled around a computer, obviously trying to figure out who had what despite each husband and wife being seated together. Bills were jumbled and one of our party had no less than three issues. Each of our group travels often, dines in fine dining establishments regularly in addition to our private clubs, and runs businesses and medical practices. We all understand the importance of excellent customer service, which was not practiced this evening. If we return to St. Andrews we will not return to this restaurant. There are other fantastic options in the town which frankly seem to appreciate their patrons far better.

Dessert was chocolate tarte ina beautiful light pastry crust with a scoop of ice cream. Service was excellent!

Overly attentive staff who won’t let you relax and choose your meal without prompting you to go for the most expensive options. Staff with broken, pigeon English, expensive wine complete with dregs which they wouldn’t recognise or accept being an issue. Discussing this with other staff behind your back Iain sting who was complaining all of which can be seen in the reflection of the glas window in front of our table!

Special dinner with my husband . The food and the atmosphere were absolutely wonderful . We had a lovely table overlooking the golf course and lovely piano music coming from the bar. My husband said its the best steak he has every had , top class . My halibut was excellent . We shared the Lingonberry Parfait ( we spoke to the pastry chef from Sweden and she told us the berries are flown in fresh from Sweden daily ) absolutely delicious . the cheese board was also excellent , The only downside of the evening was the time we had to wait for wine , because we were ordering white/Red glasses and not a bottle we had to wait until someone from the bar brought the wine . Our main course had arrived and we had to wait ages for the wine , same with other courses . The bar was very busy and the staff were working very hard however really not acceptable in a five star establishment . We did pass on our comments but didn't really get anywhere . On leaving the hotel , there was nobody on the front desk to call us a taxi again not the best of service. That's why score is 4 instead of 5 .

Restaurant has magnificent views of the Old Course and other courses from on top of the Old Course Hotel - Location is ideal. That said, went for dinner that was unremarkable - average at best - for fine dining prices. So many better restaurants in St. Andrew area to choose from. Go to the Road Hole Bar and check the views - then choose somewhere else to eat.

A perfect spot to enjoy the view of the Old Course. Food and wine were great as was the service and manager that spent time talking with us. On the same level, we also ventured to the other bar to checkout the views as well as the outdoor rooftop - both worth a stop.

We enjoyed afternoon tea at the Old Course Hotel, and I can't say enough about it. Great tea and food, and if you have golf fans in your group the view on the 17th fairway can't be beat. We thought the afternoon tea was the best value in St Andrews - didn't come close to finishing all the food.

My husband, daughter and I celebrated her graduation from U of St Andrews at the Road Hole. It is located on the 4th floor of the Old Course Hotel and is connected by an opening in the wall where there is a piano. I had requested a window table when I made the reservation and was pleasantly surprised to be seated by the window overseeing the golf course and the Old Clubhouse. The restaurant is fitted with two big lovely Chrystal chandeliers and certainly has an air of elegance. During Graduation Week there is a set menu of appetizer, entree and dessert for L60. I was not disappointed. We were promptly seated by the hostess and warmly greeted by our wonderful server Laura. Our tonic water with lime had not only a wedge of line, but a bit of lime cordial as well, and was so refreshing. Our appetizers of cheese soufflé and pate were beautifully presented and delicious - the cheese soufflé was fantastic. Entrees of beef tenderloin were buttery soft and prepared as requested - full of taste. The green beans tasted so fresh - and the potato side dish was lovely. The chocolate mousse was rich and flavorful while the blueberry cheesecake with grapefruit sorbet was light and airy. The quality of the ingredients really shone through. The meal , service, and setting truly made for a superb evening.

Out group had dinner here on our visit to St. Andrews. The two stars is for the view, it is lovely overlooking the golf course, unfortantly that is where the experience ended. The wait staff was slow and very snobbish, the only place we experienced that in 3 weeks in Scotland. The food was nothing exciting on top of that . Had a stuffed pasta that was very dry, but none of the dishes had flavor, very bland food. On top of all that the most expensive we ate at while there. Go for drinks and enjoy the view from the bar, skip the food would be our recommendation.

At a recent family celebration we decided to eat at the Old Course Hotel Road Hole Restaurant & as usual the food was amazing. With 7 adults three children & two members of the group with "Gluten Free" requirements it wasn't going to be easy. The restaurant handled it easily in their stride & provided us all with a super meal. It is never going to be a cheap eat at a 5 star hotel but I thought their prices were very much in line with other St.Andrews establishments which aren't as good as The Road Hole.

Good smoked salmon, clubhouse and excellent shrimp sandwich. They only have bottled beer but that’s gone. There’s a deck you can go out on to get some nice photos of the course.

As the title suggests we enjoyed Easter Sunday lunch at the Road Hole at a window table looking out over the magnificent 17th hole at the Old Course. The vista is unequalled anywhere and the only thing that was missing was Sunday golf on the Old Course. Service was exceptional food was first class and the setting was just perfect. In terms of value for money we have no complaints what so ever. We are fortunate to live within striking distance of this iconic restaurant and will continue to try and access it for special occasions such as East Sunday.

The Road Hole Restaurant, on the top floor of the Old Course Hotel, is only open for lunch on Sunday, but it is well worth a visit. The lunch menu is a fixed price for 3 courses and is quite limited, with only 3 choices per course, although staff were happy to make slight alterations to accommodate a shellfish allergy. The food was good, and the service was impeccable, but probably best of all is the wonderful view over the Old Course and the beach. As we were staying in the hotel we dined here again in the evening, when, although there was a wider menu, the view was hidden in the dark (this wouldn't be in a problem in the summer, with long, light evenings).

A little disappointed to say that we we found our visit to be quite a let down. Although the service was second to none, from the greeting on arrival to paying the bill, the food let down our visit. The starter at around £17-£18 with only 2 (slightly overlooked) scallops and the chips served with a £33 steak were slightly under cooked. A real shame as been looking forward to this visit for some time and we have been to other, more reasonably priced restaurants with more enjoyable food. The quality and quantity of food did not reflect the price.

Lovely meal, lovely service, seriously impressed. I'd had to cancel plans earlier in the week for my husband's birthday as we'd both been struck down by the lurgy. Both being on the mend I'd booked an overnight at the Old Course with dinner. Expectation was 'nice', reality was 'fab'. Food and service were great but have to flag the lovely touch whereby we were comped our wine. I'd phoned asking for a nice window table and mentioned my husband's birthday had been a bit of a wash due to illness. I was hoping for a good table at most so this was just a lovely gesture, thank you.

We stayed at the renowned Old Course Hotel at St. Andrews, Scotland recently. The evening after our arrival, we dined at the hotel's Road One Restaurant. The experience of which was truly outstanding. We started with 6 French oysters each which were really fresh & creamy. Then we had the Lobster Bisque which was quite delicious but less generous than the one we had at Scott's in London. For the main course, my wife & my son had the Surf & Turf ( half a grilled lobster & a portion of Rip-eye steak per person, with chips & grilled tomatoes) while I had roast shoulder of lamb garnished with seasonal vegetable. Unfortunately the steaks were overdone despite the fact that we asked for medium rare. Kindly they replaced them with a perfect medium rare version after our observation without any trouble. Overall it was a very enjoyable evening, with excellent service & a most relaxed ambience. For golfing aficionados, this would be the best venue to stay & enjoy the game in one of the most famous golf courses in the world.
