Toby's Fish & Chip Shop in Fife

Stopped in for dinner, while staying at a hotel locally. Staff were friendly and very helpful, service was quick, the food was delicious and portions very big. Son has said his mini fish and chips was a 5 star. Visit finished off with a kind offer of mini eggs for the kids to say Happy Easter. We will definitely return when we're next in town.

First visit on 30th March ‘24 and it was incredible. Staff were super friendly, the fish supper was incredible and almost zero oil on the box paper. Better than John Lewis cafe fish 👏👏👏

Been coming to Toby's since I was a wee laddie, great friendly environment with fantastic food. The bread is a must have.

Never disappointed with fish suppers from Toby's . Never bones in the fish ,batter never soggy or greasy. Chips are tremendous. Service friendly and prompt.

My husband and I visited Toby's this evening for dinner with our daughter and niece. On arrival we went through to the dining area, where the waitress took our order. The food arrived prompt and fresh, unfortunately there was a hair on my husband’s meal. He waited for the waitress to come and told her discreetly, actually saying to her “can you come closer a bit I am trying to be discreet” so as not to draw the attention of other diners. The waitress quickly took it through to the kitchen, and came back a few minutes later to advise that they were going to give him fresh chips but the same fish, we felt that unless it was a completely fresh portion he would just leave it and to take it off the menu please - which they did. Myself and the kids all ate our meals, they were delicious. When we went to pay the bill, the total was slightly different as to what we had calculated from the menu, only £1 but queried it with the staff member. Then, the various staff members were trying to calculate where the difference was, and my husband then said “maybe I have miscalculated”. At which point we heard from across the shop “what’s the issue?” being shouted. I said sorry are you taking to us?” He then walked over tried to look at the receipt (all with a poor attitude) At this point I said “you’re not handling this well” he then came over, walked away again shouting to the older staff member “are we charging for that fish?” I then said “no you’re not we sent it back, it wasn’t eaten” To which he was told no by the older colleague who then said “sorry about the hair it was an accident, these things happen”, which we replied “no, absolutely these things do” At this stage my husband and I turned around to look and the young staff member then remarked aggressively “what’s up?” Unfortunately the colleague lacking in customer service skills, was still responding aggressively and smirking. As there was clear smarting over something, we promptly left with the two kids after paying the bill stating “not great customer service”. My husband glanced through the window after we exited the shop to not the colleague laughing exacerbating the situation more. What was supposed to be a chilled, quick bite out ended in a crap, rubbish situation resulting in spending wasted money and time writing this. Having read all the reviews beforehand, the colleague has drastically let the rest of the nicer elements of the place down. Damaging the reputation of the business, the individual acted horribly and seriously lacked in customer service skills. If I owned a cafe, I would be mortified if someone found a hair, apologise and offer a fresh plate, not be annoyed because the customer dares to question the foreign object on their plate! Especially, when said customer couldn’t have been nicer about it. What a horrible evening. Thank you for your reply. However, the first time anyone.apologised was when the older gentleman behind the fryer stepped in and apologised when we were paying, to which I acknowledged and agreed it was a mistake. Whilst in the dining room my husband was not offered a fresh plate of food, the waitress stated they were replacing the chips only, which is why it was refused. Your staff member was obnoxious and aggressive, confrontational and looking for an argument. Thank you again for your apologies.

As always the food is great. Best chippy in the area IMO but I wish they would change to boxes as all of our battered food was stuck to the paper tonight.

Great little local fish n chip shop. I had haggis and my wife had haddock. Both were delicious. We ate in and the service was friendly and attentive. We were exhausted after a long drive from near London and this was just what we needed😋😋😋

Been going to Tobys for over 20 years. Always top grub and great service. Try the mac n cheese.

Often eat in and but tried the new pudding bites as a takeaway. So delicious 😋

We are lucky to live in Thornton, and Toby's is our go to chippy. Always fresh, fast and efficient service, and even when it's a big order, they are always on top of it. We sit in often, and it's just a lovely wee place. Wouldn't go anywhere else!

At Tobys for the first time tonight, ordered a sausage supper and a fish cake supper. The fish cakes were delicious as was the sausage supper however unfortunately due to using paper only to wrap the meals they came with a sizable amount of stuck on paper when they were unwrapped. Not the most appealing! Very much need to have plastic wrap or proper boxes for the food, having a bunch of paper glued to my dinner isn't great!

We sat in with our 2 kids and was lovely fresh and tasted fantastic. Service was great and quick too. Definitely be returning when in the area again.

Disappointed. Went here the other day for dinner as I haven’t been there for years. Got a fish supper and the fish was soggy and the chips were burnt and even had black bits that were totally burnt. After got a desert just to see if it was any better and sadly it was just as bad. Will not be back so disappointed

Searched google for the best fish and chips in the area and Toby's came up. Lots of options on the menu and the opportunity to order ahead. Option to eat inside, but we took it to go. The staff were excellent. They were friendly and quick to offer solutions to our problems. We are used to having vinegar packets in Canada, here they gave a wonderful coating of salt, vinegar, ketchup and brown sauce on the fries. We asked for the vinegar on the side (for some of our other eaters) and they were quick to find a solution. This would be our favorite place if we lived closer. Highly recommend. Thanks for being a wonderful experience. Great staff and the food was delicious.

Not been to Toby’s in years as not from Kirkcaldy. We were in the area and just HAD to pop in – it certainly didn’t disappoint. We visited on a Saturday (early evening), although it was busy we still managed to get a table. The food was just as good as we remembered – piping hot, fresh and extremely tasty. Highly recommended ! GREAT SERVICE

Delicious food, my partner had the fish which was delicious, I had a half pizza with haggis pakora which was absolutely fantastic, the portions were good for the price, with friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. There's a sit in dining area which also looked great.

After seeing loads of good reviews i had high hopes dont ever leave reviews but our fish And chips were drenched in tomato sauce, made the chips soggy and fish aswell, fairly disappointed

Nice place, went last night for 2 x fish and chips and single haggis, takeaway, and this is only a fair and constructive comment, the chips were not the best, pretty greasy, will go back and have another try.

First visit for a sit-in since before Covid. I am delighted to say that Toby's still has the high standards we enjoyed in the past. Very friendly, polite, fast service. I had the standard (large) fish and chips, my wife had the small fish and chips, and we had a pot of tea for two. It was delicious - nice crispy batter on the fish, chips expertly cooked, not at all greasy. We'll be back very soon!

What on earth is going on at Toby's. We don't have fish and chips very often and I was so looking forward to this tonight. Just had takeaway fish & chips, single black pudding and mushy peas which cost £12.50. Normally a fish supper from Toby's consists of two quite large fish but tonights offering consisted of one fish cut in to 2 pieces, my piece was 5 inches x 2 inches (I measured it) and my husband's was very slightly bigger. The fish was cold, greasy and not very tasty. The black pudding and the chips were cold but tasty enough, but I can't help feeling that £8 for the fish supper was a total rip off. We paid by card and there was no customer copy of the payment and when asked for the receipt, the assistant hand wrote one, which was a bit strange. We live in Glenrothes but always go to Toby's for our fish & chips but sorry we'll be going elsewhere from now on

Never in my life have I had a fish supper like this. A lump of grease holding the sloppy batter to the chips. AVOID. £16 in the bin.

Simply the best traditional chippy in Fife and probably the whole of Scotland. Forget all the hype and queues of Anstruther, Toby's is the place to get it.

Went to Tobys for years, nice friendly staff and really big portions, not just a fish shop they do other things too, like Macaroni and lasagne which is all home made and lovely 😊 also the prices are fair but lower than the other shop so all good 👍

Stopped off here today and won't be back. £8.80 for a fish supper that was in bits, no whole fillets. Whilst it was tasty enough it is £2 more expensive than nearby Glenrothes. You have been warned.

Having just finished my fish supper I feel compelled to write a review as it was quite frankly, disgusting - where do I start? It was extremely greasy and salty tasting; the fish was not nice at all, it tasted like it had been sitting a while and was of cheap quality; the portion was also tiny which is just as well as I wouldn’t of finished it anyway. I visited this place around a year ago and was unimpressed then, however tonight I was starving and thought I’d give it another chance. Big mistake. I really cannot understand how they can justify charging £8 for a fish supper like that!! This place used to have a good name but the last twice it has been so awful and I would not recommend to anyone. Will not be back.

Just had a terrible experience. We normally travel through to Thornton to visit the Fish Hoose, however, it is closed on a Tuesday so tried here. The fish was tiny and the batter all soggy. The king rib was a sorry floppy mess of which half the soggy batter got stuck to the paper when opening. The chips were undercooked and anemic. I was my first visit and certainly my last.

OMG what has happened atToby’s, just picked up a fish supper and it was overcooked and very dry.👎👎👎 Never been so disappointed.

Have you ever been bathed by the angels? Have you ever won the lottery, twice, by accident? Have you ever laughed so hard it cured multiple diseases? Well that's what eating a tobys feels like. Best chippy for miles, and consistently hot, fresh, fast and tasty. If it really came to the crunch, and I had to choose between my own flesh and blood and the other worldly tastiness that is a tobys...I'm not saying I'd choose the tobys...but I'd have a hard think about it.

Dropped in for a carry out a Fish Supper and a Battered Chicken supper ,lovely fresh fish and outstanding batter The chicken was very succulent and fried while we waited .Staff are pleasant and helpful ,we will certainly look in here gain

5 of us were here on Saturday for a chip tea, food was freshly cooked and hot I had half chicken in battery it was cooked to perfection, restaurant is spotless staff are hard workers excellent service I would recommend giving it a visit

Well impressed with the young lads effeciency behind the counter but so not impressed with the girl who served me. Used her bare hands to lift the fish then picked it up again to salt the chips underneath. Surely utensils should be used or gloves, particularly as she was wiping her nose with the back of her hand. Yuck.

Stopped here on way home through Fife from Dundee, with family (3 young kids) pleasant service and good food. Clean nice modern decor in restaurant area. Food was good, with decent portion size, and freshly cooked rather than sitting in the hot cabinet that I've had elsewhere. Would strongly recommend.

Went here for tea on way home tonight, really pleasant girl took our order food lovely and piping hot. Food was quick out to us and everything was brought to us at once and another pleasant girl was at the till couldn't ask for more and will definitely return.

Staff were friendly and helpful - even offered to split a meal into two and cut it up for our kids when they realised we were eating in the car (at the kids' request!) and had no problem with the inevitable return visit for the toilet. Restaurant and takeaway were very clean and inviting. Portions were hefty, reasonably priced and tasty too! We're not local but will definitely detour when visiting the Kingdom of Fife in future!
