Union of Genius in Edinburgh, City of

If I could, I’d be at U of G everyday. They have an ever-changing offering of delicious and unusual soups, chillis and home-baked bread. Everything is tasty, filling and makes you feel good! The best take out place in the Forest Road/ George V Bridge area. There is some limited seating so if you get there early enough, you can dine in and chat to the lovely staff.

I had the veggie chilli; it was delicious! The staff were friendly and the tea delicious; in the words of Simon and Garfunkel, I’ll be back!

Stumbled upon it based on the crowd inside. And the aroma of the freshly cooked Chilly! Super. We had Vegetarian Chilly and Minestrone soup. Both were delicious. There were many people who were there for takeaways and looked liked regulars. It's not a fancy place but great for yummy wholesome food. Be early or they run out of the favourites!

Best tomato chili soup I've found in Edinburgh. Love the business model that's focused on sustainability and eating local handmade soups!

Honestly can’t rave about this place enough. I visited for the second time this Summer. I’m a huge soup fan and the choices were just phenomenal. However, the golden chilli chicken was genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Can’t stop thinking about it and will definitely be coming back the next time I’m lucky enough to visit Edinburgh!

Staff were helpful, decor was great, prices were cheap, food was delicious (I had the broccoli combo), what's there not to enjoy!

It was so good to see that this fabulous little place on Forrest Road has survived the pandemic and is as good as ever. The fact that we visited three times in four days says all that is needed! Superb.

Union of Genius has a short but ever-changing menu offering really unusual and tasty soups, home-made bread, salads and the staples, chilli chicken and vegan chilli. It is quite literally the best vegan chilli in Edinburgh - bit like dying and floating to heaven on a tortilla. I even wrote to them and asked for the recipe and they gave me it, but when I tried to re-create it, it was nowhere near as good. If you need healthy, soul-warming food, you won’t be disappointed. There are a limited number of seats so if you’re lucky you can get one, otherwise it’s take out. Did I mention that the staff are lovely too?

Excellent choice for a hot soup to lighten up a cold and dizzy day! Very good choices, natural and cheap! A nice place to refill your batteries to continue visiting this beautiful city.

We love soup and salad for lunch and this small place was incredible! Wonderful selections and the crusty bread/butter accompaniment was delicious! We had tomato basil soup and chicken chili and shared a vegan salad bowl of goodness! Great place to stop for lunch with friendly staff!

The menu is limited but it's a nice diverse balance of soups, salads, meat, vegan, gluten free etc. Our meals were super tasty. It's small inside so you might not get a seat but it's worth it if you do. If you're bear Greyfriars, the museum etc. And fancy a healthy lunch then it's worth a visit.

Such a great place to grab some lunch - particularly on a cold day! Really tasty soup, very friendly service, and they have some amazing brownies if you feel like a treat!

We opted for an eat in lunch here as it was really handy after a visit to the National Museum and we loved the sound of the menu. We chose the vegan chilli and the golden chilli chicken and both were superb! Total comfort food on a chilly day. The soups also sounded amazing and everything was excellent value and beautifully presented. It was lovely to see the café busy for takeaway too. Staff were extremely cheerful and efficient and genuinely seemed to care about the food and customers. We would certainly return time and time again if we lived closer!

What a great find. Went on a walking tour and dived in here. It's small and more a take away. There are a few sit up bars and table and we found a seat. We had a chicken chilli and fresh bread and drinks. Everything fresh, hit and served by friendly people. The shop also gives back to those who need it too, a great idea. The food was hot and tasty, fresh bread, friendly staff, loved it. Well done enjoy

I had already pre-planned some lunch ideas while we visited Edinburgh, which was lucky because in the street of eateries we walked right past it first time! It was definitely worth doubling back - it didn't disappoint! We chose to sit outside as the sun was shining; the jerk chicken and the lentil soups were the perfect thing to keep us warm. If I lived or worked here, I would be at Union of Genius at least twice a week no question

We popped in for lunch and were so pleasantly surprised. The staff were brilliant explaining what was in each of the soups on offer, choices of bread etc. The portions were fantastic, the food superb and such good value for money. The soups were so innovative and the bread was great too. Such an excellent idea

Ambiente accogliente, commesse premurose. Adatto e frequentato soprattutto da universitari. Le zuppe sono gustose e varie. Attenti però ai tempi. Oltre un certo orario a pranzo finiscono e non vengono rimpiazzate. Andateci quindi per tempo. Carino e colorato l'arredo. Posti limitati, ma ci sono anche i banconi.

We were walking along Forrest road and we found this wee place to eat a good soup and a kuku. The place is very small, a couple of tables where you can put your plate on and enjoy the food. We were a little bit uncomfortable for that, not to have space to move while eating. It's a shame because the food is good, tasty and organic, friendly staff. Good to try it.

This place is just amazing, brilliant. The soups are so delicius. We tried chicken soup, haggis soup, tomato soup. They all were fantastic. I recommend it to everyone.

Edinburgh absolutely crackles during the Festival. It was great to sit al fresco outside this smashing little cafe on one our rare perfect Scottish summer days. Just days before, all around Forrest Road was jam-packed with Festive Folk; and I'd have been lucky to find myself a seat. This small restaurant offers top class food and tasty cakes. The coffee was very, very good. And I shall return!

Quick stop during the Fringe for lunch. We had soup and bread, really tasty cream of Courgette and Spinach soup with olive bread. Sensible money for 2 during the Fringe (about £12) and super tasty. The place was really busy, we were lucky to get seats (this was at 2.30pm)! Highly recommended.

Es un local pequeñito pero muy agradable, hay varias sopas para elegir que acompañan con pan, el cual puedes elegir también entre varios tipos. También hay ensaladas. Probamos dos sopas y estaban deliciosas! Está muy bien de precio y muy céntrico por lo que merece la pena ir.

This small restaurant has some of the best soups you'll find anywhere. Choices include vegetarian and GF soups, so there's something for everyone. We had four different soups among our group and all were delicious. Accompanying breads and salads were also fantastic.

Happen chance to find this place with lots of delicious vegetarian options. Beet and quinoa salad with pea shoots and wonderful olive bread was just the right lunch to balance the heavier Scottish palate.

After hiking and driving all through the Highlands, we wanted a healthier lunch than the fish and chips and burgers. The Union of Genius was the perfect choice. The soups were flavorful, get the flight, and the chicken chili is perfectly done. Highly recommend!

Recomiendo 100% pasar a probar el Union of Genius si se hace una visita a Edimburgo. Es un establecimiento muy pequeño a la vez que acogedor y diferente. Sin duda llama la atención. We visited Union of Genius on the recommendation of a friend. We arrived at the restaurant at approximately 1:45 in the afternoon to find 2 soups, the regular chili, and one quiche were already sold out. We decided to stay and two of us had the soup flight with the remaining 3 soups (Yucatán chicken, Chana masala, and leek potato and pear) and the other had one of the quiches. The soups were good and the bread was tasty as well. However, the quiche was served cold and was not that enjoyable. I would be interested to try their other soups.

Wow what a find - thanks trip advisor! Searched for gluten free food and found this lovely cafe. Aubergine vegan and gluten free quiche. Filling, moist and tasty. Good price! £4.50! Would recommend...search this place out.

This lovely little coup cafe does a great range of soups, changing daily and the most delicious vegan chilli - i would highly recommend for a nice lunch when exploring the Edinburgh old town.

A wonderful choice of soups, salads and sandwiches. We had a lentil salad, a carrot soup and a Moroccan chicken soup with a choice of bread. Small venue, beat the crowd...go early, the line extended out the door throughout the lunch hour. Outside seating available, but inside more inviting.

Great selection of excellent soups. They come in different sizes, which I really appreciate, because often a one-size portion is way too much for me. So no waste. It also comes with good bread. Best of all, I love that it’s a socially responsible restaurant that feeds the homeless.

It is clear that a lot of love goes in to the cooking and the running of union of genius. You can taste it in the food there. The staff are genuine, enthusiastic and knowledgeable (ask yourself how often you can actually say that). The soup selection was great, my choice (Caldo Verde) was terrific and the onion bread was delicious. This is more than just for a treat for lunch, it's a treat for the soul. Very competitively priced. Just wish it was closer to my office, already planning my next walk up there.

I came here twice and loved it. My cost for creamy chicken noodle soup and hot chocolate was £7. I felt I got a good meal for the price. They have several kinds of hot chocolate (ie. white chocolate, milk chocolate - who knew?) There was a mix of students and adults. Both times it was busy, but it didn't take long to get served.

A friend took me here - the first I’d heard of Union of Genius. It seemed a nice place for a quick lunch. It was very busy when we arrived but soon thinned out. It’s the kind of place where you might, as we did, share the window table with unknown others.

We stumbled upon this place and boy, it didnt disappoint at all. I had the olive, pesto and tomato stromboli side with a large carrot and double coriander soup. My friend had the same stromboli with the leek and potato. Hot, delicious and very very filling. So glad we went it was amazing.

I don't eat soup but I keep coming back to this tiny restaurant close to my office. Their vegan chilli is amazingly delicious and super good value for money. So filling! I also love that they only use compostable containers for their takeaway stuff and if you bring back 10 of them you get a free meal. They are also very involved with the community and help out homeless people.

I went based on the reviews of this place and was not disappointed. The soup was the best I've ever had and the service was great. It's very small though so might be difficult to get a seat during busy periods but you can get the meal to go.

A quick stop off for lunch. Ordered a tomato and bacon soup. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly warming on a cold day like today. Filling and well prices. Nice, funky little place. Great staff.

We came here on a rainy day after spending some time in the museum. They have a great selection of soups and breads, and if you can't decide which you want, you can get a flight of 3 soups! Great tasting homely soups. If you can get a seat I'd recommend sitting in and watching the world go by. They offer a range of vegan, vegetarian and meat soups, and also a veggie chilli which sold out very quickly.

Qué descubrimiento. Escondido en el casco antiguo de este café vende una variedad de sopas que llegará al lugar. Pedimos la tabla que te dio una muestra de 3 sopas. Viene con 3 panes diferentes también. Nos encantó. Era muy sabroso. También probamos una ensalada, de nuevo muy agradable. Very nice soup selection in a small shop near the National Museum. Almost all of the soups are gluten free with a few vegan options. The only reason I took one star off is because they only offer rice or oat cakes as a gluten free option with the soup. These were too dry and not tasty. If they offered a gluten free roll or bread, this would get 5 stars for sure. Soup with a great piece of bread is a gluten free persons holy grail on a cold day.

A tiny place serving up big flavor in soup and a few deserts. All good. Friendly staff who shared the source of their delicious bread. Buy a “suspended” soup or coffee while you’re there. They will hold it for someone who needs it.

Questo locale ci ha dato subito l’impressione di dover entrare in punta di piedi. Piccolo e diverso dai tanti posti visti finora. Zuppe e insalate con sapori che risvegliano le papille, uso impeccabile delle spezie. Molto carinamente ci hanno regalato una mezza porzione della loro zuppa più gettonata, proprio perché non ce n’era a sufficienza ma volevano comunque farcela assaggiare! Si può scegliere anche con che pane accompagnare la proprio zuppa.. Ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo è altissima qualità degli ingredienti.

I had a tasty and filling lunch of soup and bread. The best aspect, in my opinion, is how all the takeaway packaging is compostable, even the cutlery.

in una fredda giornata decidiamo di provare questo famoso locale che fa esclusivamente zuppe calde. luogo molto piccolo, non ci stanno molte persone. il personale è molto disponibile e ti propone anche di assaggiare le zuppe per scegliere quella migliore. ogni piatto viene accompagnato da del pane (si può scegliere tra diverse tipologie anche senza glutine). consiglio vivamente di assaggiare le zuppe prima di prenderle, alcune sono parecchio piccanti!!!!!

Visited here after researching some unique places in Edinburgh whilst visiting. Delicious soup and a range of breads to choose from, service was great and I thought the option to buy a suspended soup or coffee for the homeless was so thoughtful and such a wonderful concept. I haven’t come across any places doing this before so this made me an even bigger fan of Union of Genius. I would definitely return here if I visit Edinburgh again to support such a great business and cause.

OMG the soups are divine! Majority of them vegan/vegetarian. They feed homeless and poor people and you can buy suspended coffee or soup for somebody else. Plus they pack all take away stuff in recycled materials. Great food with mission. I absolutely loved it.

My family and I stopped in for a coffee, but actually ended up ordering 3 different soups and bread. Hands down some of the nicest soups I've tasted. I was really impressed by the ethos and philosophy that Union of Genius portray...from how they source their foods, to recycling, to donating soups to the homeless and the option to pay for someone else's food who is in need. Whenever I visit Edinburgh again I would definitely visit again. Highly recommend a visit.

Questo piccolo locale è situato nella zona universitaria, a due passi dalla Royal mile. Una dozzina di posti a sedere all'Interno (per lo più sgabelli posizionati accanto a delle mensole) ed una varietà ampia di zuppe, vegane, vegetariane ed a base di carne (ottima quella con sedano rapa e bacon): due misure (regular da 3,20 sterline e large da 3,70) accompagnate da vari tipi di pane tra cui scegliere (ottimo e fragrante quello alle olive). In due si pranza con neppure 10 sterline, ritemprandosi con un pasto caldo contro il gelo scozzese. Veramente una gran trovata.

Solo probé una sopa pero hay bastante variedad. Estaba muy buena y te la sirven con pan. Comes bien y muy barato. La chica muy amable, me explicó qué llevaban todas las sopas que había.

Me and my friend have been discussing how much we wanted a soup cafe and we found one! Would highly recommend here, got the red lentil tomato soup with onion bread and the chilli, both were amazing.

Visited one lunch time being a big fan of a nice warming soup and it did not disappoint. A tiny venue with very limited seating however we were lucky and managed to sit a the one proper table sharing with a couple already enjoying their food. We had a trio of soups with a trio of breads and a vegetarian chilli. I should say right here that he is not a fan of vegetarian food generally however he declared the chilli that good he wouldnt have known it was vegetarian - it is a complement honest! The three soups and bread meanwhile were legendary, I even forgave the fact that one of them was almost cold they were that good. Bread was good too but could have done with slightly thicker slices.

My family ate at Union of Genius twice during our 12 days in Edinburgh. We liked it that much. The soup is delicious as is the bread and gluten free desserts. It is a small, quaint place. The available soups rotate frequently. We tried the lentil, carrot/chorizo, winter vegetable, Senegalese chicken peanut, split pea, chorizo/kale/potato and the chili. I loved their "pay it forward" concept whereby you pay for soup for someone who comes in and cannot afford to pay for his/her own meal.

El sitio pequeño y acogedor, las dependientes súper amables y el precio bastante bueno. Con un bol de sopa incluye pan de diferentes sabores, comen dos personas, a 4.5 libras. La verdad es que tenían mejor pinta que el sabor, o yo no Estoy acostumbrada a tantas hiervas en las sopas, pero al que le gusten sabores nuevos, perfecto!!

This is the best what you can get if you are looking for a lunch for good price - a large bowl of soup. In Union of Genius they know how to mix all, sometimes different flavours and they are doing it right. You can find here a big variety of soups - I personally recommend this with sweet potato and coconut. They have soups for every one of you -
