Real pub decent ale not for the tourist not many of these places left

Friendly bar staff, great range of beers, reasonably priced and good food.

I've not eaten here but the beer is always excellent. Its a warm friendly pub that's worth a visit. The fact that an amateur brewing club meet here regularly and like the pubs beers says quite a lot. I should say that it has a lovely garden at the rear.

A nice old pub a short stroll from The West Gate in Canterbury. It is very traditional with nice beams and more importantly a great selection of drinks to choose from and a nice relaxed atmosphere. There is also a courtyard garden to enjoy a beer outside during the warmer months.

Came here on Saturday night for our anniversary and was not disappointed. Staff were very quick and friendly, everything was well priced and the food was brilliant.(especially the halloumi fries) very cute garden too!! Will definitely be returning as soon as possible.

We have been to Canterbury 4 times and always come to this pub. It's like coming home. The food was delicious and the people were great. I can only recommend.

Can't comment on the food or atmosphere. First time I ever went it was to use the UPS point. Package said delivered but mysteriously disappeared. After I mentioned I was going to file a police report, manager decided to call my mobile unprovoked and go on to call me a liar and accuse me of threatening his staff. All because I MENTIONED legal action on the phone.

A lovely historic pub dating back to 1604. Full of character and charm with a pretty courtyard garden.

If you are looking for a "proper" pub, you've come to the right place. Friendly atmosphere, good food, range of ales, beers etc, warm fire in the winter and a great (although hard) quiz on Sunday nights

Lovely pub, lovely ale but the wood burner was going out when I arrived at 7.30 so by 9.30 the place was freezing but I am a bit of a cold mortal... I'll dress for it next time (2 woolly jumpers and a duffel coat maybe)

This is easily now a pub I would return to, a proper local pub with freindly service and reasonable prices. A good atmosphere and traditional decor make this a real gem in the world of memodern pubs and well worth a visit.

But not just a local, this is real slice of what used to exist in many places and has now died out: an all-round location that combines things rarely seem together anymore - charismatic landlord, quality drinks for affordable prices, an old building that's seen some stories and heard some tales. Despite being in the thoroughfare to town from the University, it's criminally under attended by the students. And that's not a good thing. The mix of ages, backgrounds and beliefs is what makes this place special. I hope they learn!

A real old fashioned pub, with board and card games available to play. The young bar lady was polite and served up a cracking pint. Plenty of ale's and a draught cider.

Lovely pub! Came here on my own to watch the South Africa v England rugby game. Luckily found a table right by the TV. Wholesome pub with a good selection of beers and tasty food. Dogs are very welcome and they even have their own doggy menu!

Very nice English pub, everything is higgle-de-piggledy and there's board games on the shelf to the right of the bar. Tonnes of interesting stuff on the walls too. It's a pub, there's alcohol there, enjoy!

It's an interesting place and cozy...but it does something I have never seen in a bar before. It's a bar/UPS depot! So the bartenders have to divide themselves between finding packages and slinging booze. The package people get pretty shirty about having to wait for pint to be pulled first.

Met up with some friends. Had a really good afternoon and evening. Food was very nice. We don't live in Canterbury so it was a one off event, we are happy to recommend a visit if you find yourself in the area.

We booked a table for this lovely-looking old pub for an early dinner. We had to ask to be seated away from the large sports tv, and then had to go to the bar to ask for menus after waiting at the table for 5min without being brought one. We went up to order, the barman was indifferent, and then informed us that we couldn’t have either of the dishes we wanted because they didn’t have any eggs (no apology) - despite they’re situated within a stone’s throw of a grocery shop and Sainsbury’s. Felt quite unwelcome so decided to dine elsewhere.

Best local pub there is to watch the England game, independently owned and operated for donkeys years with a great pub quiz, christmas raffle, cask ales, burger meal deals, vegan options and a large beer garden in the back. Pet friendly, perfect for groups and hikers, for birthdays, baby showers, engagement parties, etc.

My favourite pub in Canterbury. Lovely, relaxed, vintage, intellectual feel. Good ales too.

Everyone who entered the pub were greeted as if they were long-time customers. Service was great, food delicious and I only wish I had time to sample more of their selection of beers.

Beautiful garden, good beers, good food. When I went, the kitchen was very very busy, but the stuff managed to take orders and prepare them in a reasonable time. Only a small accident occurred. I went to the bar for another round of drinks with a colleague of mine, and I told the barman that, NO MATTER WHAT, he should not have accepted the payment from my colleague (who had already paid all the other rounds), but only from myself. I knew that my colleague would have insisted to pay again, that's why I explained the situation to the barman and I repeated myself five or six times. Guess what? My colleague went to the other side of the bar and paid with his card, to the very barman to whom I had asked five or six times not to accept his payment. That was a bit disappointing. Otherwise, good vibe, good drinks, good food.

Visited this traditional pub with friends before a show at the theatre. Food was excellent very tasty omelettes, ham was gorgeous, was given complimentary extra bites to eat as they didn't have any coleslaw which accompanied the main meal. But we will certainly visit again. Outstanding service by all the staff. Highly recommend this pub.

I went to twelve pubs in Canterbury while on holiday, this was the nicest, and conveniently near Canterbury West station. I had Kentish Vintage Pip cider (5.6%). Other local pubs in CAMRA 2022 Good Beer Guide: the Foundry Brew Pub was like a charmless barn, and (worse) Thomas Tallis Alehouse refuses to accept cash. I would have scored you 5 if you had a stronger cider, such as the splendid, wine like Biddenden Dry, 8%.

Great beer, lovely garden, very friendly staff. AND THEY SELL PICKLED EGGS! Amazing for that reason alone! Quiz is way to difficult! 🤣

Staff nice, building nice, but the beef burger was a massive let down. Hardly any chips and the beef patty was 90% gristle. Almost couldn’t believe how much there was in it. Hardly any meat at all amongst all the white fatty gristle. The patty itself was actually chewy. Partner had another meal which was fine.

Visited on a long weekend visit to Canterbury with friends and had the foresight to book in advance. Lovely old building, popular with locals and tourists. Our food was very tasty and plentiful, although the menu isn't huge which actually is a good thing. No complaints!

Seemed like a pleasant locals pub, but will avoid in the future. Popped in while passing by and had to wait patiently as all the locals were served before us at the bar, although arriving after us. Drinks were good on service.

So i noticed the bartender fill up a pint by using the leftovers from the drip tray and then casually serving a customer with it. Sorry but this is discusting.

Friendly staff (even when busy), Shawn is always welcoming (so let him off for being a West ham fan) locals are welcoming, and barbillards table and good beer. What more could you ask for? Ever since I moved a away this is one place I make sure I visit whenever I get home and over the last 15 years has never disappointed

A little gem actually. Nice home style cooked food. Not ridiculously overpriced like some places in the city. Some good ale and cider options too plus friendly South African landlord. Definitely doing a good job here

The Unicorn is a lovely place to get a pint. It’s nice that they don’t play loud music so you can have a conversation with people around you .
