Unicorn Hotel in Newark and Sherwood

Not only can we not thank the staff enough for staying a l later than their normal times to check us in last night due to our error, but the room was fantastic and the beds were the comfiest I’ve ever stayed in ! Thoroughly impressed and can’t express our gratitude ! Thankyou so much to the lovely receptionist last night at midnight and to the other young lady ! Stopped by as the weather was nice. Had a few pints by the water. Jackie made us feel very welcome. Lovely pub in a lovely location. Will definitely be back.

Food good, staff attentive toilets could do with a revamp

Firstly I found the booking a table difficult on the telephone. We were booked at 1pm. When we arrived we waited a long time for our drinks, and then eventually when we ordered our food we waited for over 75 minutes for it to arrive. During that time we ordered more drinks which took forever for them to arrive as well. The service was atrocious there were only 2 staff taking orders, maning the bar and serving food. When we left nearly every table was full of dirty dishes no-one had had the time to clear away! The food was acceptable but the waiting times spoilt the visit and we will not be back.

Staff were most helpull & made it a pleasant experience. The menu seemed a bit limited for me. I would have liked salmon but was very happy with the scampi & would have it again. My friend had gammon &:was very pleased with his meal. You do not do a lactose free dessert, but that's quite common. I'm not fond of icecream so I don't have that even when it's on the menu. I was having a lactose free banoffee cheesecake, locally, but they've stopped doing it. I'm assuming there is not enough demand.

Everything as you'd want & expect in this type of establishment & price bracket.

Just had a fabulous steak cooked really nice, returned Sunday for the roast it was nice but had to send back originally because it was cold

From the minute I entered the hotel, nothing was too much. I arrived after 930pm and the kitchen was closed, but Caz was happy to cook me a pudding/dessert if I required it. The room and bed was really big for the price, I have been in larger chain hotels and the rooms alot smaller. This morning was continental breakfast due to the chef unavailable, which everyone apologised for on the phone before arriving, when I arrived last night, to this morning. An unbelievable spread was available, again Jackie couldn't be more helpful. Finally what an fantastic setup and layout, next time I am in Nottingham visiting family defo on my booking list.👏👏👏👏

Food portions were really well sized, drinks were well priced as well. Great service from Carolynne and the rest of the staff throughout the meal and overall a lovely atmosphere.

I had a table booked for 6pm on Thursday 28th March. We arrived on time and placed our drinks order straight away. We then placed our food order at 6:15 which was one starter and 2 mains. The starter was just a pate so needed no cooking. The starter didn’t arrive until 6:40. We then waited until 7:00pm for our main course. When we asked the assistant manager what the delay was she said she would check with the kitchen to see if she could speed up the main course. She came back to say they were experiencing delays and there would be a further delay. Having been sat at the table for 1 hour and had drinks and one starter we weren’t prepared to wait any longer. We asked for the bill which was wrong when it came. We had been charged for the wrong bottle of wine. The whole experience was abysmal. I live locally but don’t feel that I want to dine there again after experiencing such poor service and will probably in future go to other restaurants in the area. I don’t expect to get any response to my complaint but would like to hear what your views of the whole situation are. My booking was under the name of Brian Talbot and you have my contact details.

On arrival the waitress that served us looked miserable like she didn’t want to be there we then placed our order and had to ask where our drink was as the starter arrived before the drinks did was told our original drinks order wasn’t in stock then when our food came to our table was then told items on the meal hadn’t been delivered all tho it was a single item it’s still pretty bad I felt the food was really overpriced for avarage food when I could of gone to McDonald’s for the Same quality and definitely half the price will definitely not re visit or recommend at all poor service and food

Lovely staff. Good British pub food. Sadly understaffed on this occasion and a little longer wait on food which affected the atmosphere.

We had a table booked for dinner on Saturday but unfortunately the power went off in the kitchen so went elsewhere & had a meal in the hotel on Sunday. The staff are helpful & friendly and always welcome us. Ryan dealt with the Saturday issue as best as he could, he was very apologetic & couldn't have done more. We're looking forward to our next visit in May

Very poor meals and service today 27.03.2024. On arrival we were seated by staff and not told there would be a long wait for food. It was only when we went to order that we were told it would be a 40 minute wait for food. At least we were told at that point so we ordered. It actually took well over 1 1/4 hours for the main course to arrive. People around us were also very unhappy and one couple finally gave up, asked for a refund and left. Once we got the food it was awful. Cold buttermilk chicken with a side of dry oven chips. I had the same poor food, even asked for mushy peas but was given garden peas and again one of the worst meals I have had in a long time. As the food was so poor and ridiculously late I can only assume the microwave had given up after over use! Be honest with your customers from the offset. So poor we will NEVER waste our time with a Marstons poor quality, cold and late meal.ever again. Give this a miss and go to Macdonalds or have an Iceland microwave meal instead

Had a reservation at 6:30 on Sunday 24th, was called 5:12pm to advise they had no Sunday roasts and had run out of most items on the menu. Surely you have reservations for a reason? To plan what you need maybe? I had no choice but to cancel my booking which ruined my family plans for the day. Poor all round.

Unfortunately the pub lost power in the kitchen after we had received our food which couldn’t be helped so we were unable to order dessert however the overall service was pretty poor & very slow.

We arrived and were turned away as the gas was off.

Booked a table last minute and got in had fabulous meal and was just lovely . Food was great staff amazing. My daughter has allergies and the staff member Chris was extremely helpful and sorted her out he was excellent at his job nothing was too much trouble

Great staff, evening meal was great and bed was comfy. Unfortunately the room we had was above the rear exit and had the door banging till about 2 am. Then same again from 06.30 .

I work away from home and was made to feel like I was at home. Carolynne made every effort to make my evening very pleasant. Looking forward to next week

We had the same problem this time as our last. It was cold and the staff had difficulty in getting any heating on because they are not in control of it. It was only because of our persistence that it was resolved. They did their best to be helpful and finally achieved it so that our room was reasonably warm when we went back upstairs.

Very slow to serve as very little staff on . Waited at the bar for 5 mins for anyone to even appear to serve us .

Well I’ve traveled from Sheffield to have a meal here with my partner and to start they didn’t accept my I.D and then when they did the basically ignored us and was waiting for over 25 minutes to order and not naming but glasses and other staff was just plain disrespectful towards a veteran as that was my only form of I.D wouldn’t recommend coming here.!

Nice pub/restaurant close to the waterfront. Traditional low ceiling pub, dark and cosy just as it should be. The conservatory area is light and bright and offers a good view of the water. Food and drinks were both good and they have a lot of deals through the week (like steak night or pie night, combining food and drink at a discount). Nice outdoor space and entertainment for the kids. Lots of parking at the front and particularly at the rear.

Our second time at The Unicorn Hotel today and weren’t disappointed 😄 The starters were delicious and the mains too. My partner had the homemade kebab and she says it’s amazing . Keep up the good work 👍🏻 The staff here are lovely and welcoming.We will definitely come again.

I arrived late after a long drive. Was greeted by a delightful young lady behind the bar. Explained I was late for my dinner reservation, not a problem she said. Just what I needed after the stressful journey.

Food was great ,nice yo see breakfast improved so much.room spotless ,well done!!

Have stayed many times here, I must say the evening meal was superb ,much improved,thought we would try breakfast,greatly improved from earlier visits. Staff were pleasant snd helpful . Thank you and look forward to returning soon. Room was immaculate.

We came on Saturday evening (9th) to celebrate mother's day. We were a big table of 9, which included 3 children. Catherine our waitress was brilliant. One of our boys couldn't decide what to have for pudding and was getting quite stressed. Catherine brought him a menu and made some recommendations and explained what the puddings were. He was very happy with his choice. The kids loved the reading area too. We will definitely be back.

Lovely relaxed place on a Saturday night with a good menu range, decent portion size, tasty food served by warm welcoming staff of which Charlotte was one of three that helped us enjoy our evening.

Do yourself a favour and book somewhere else. I would have gotten a better sleep in the car. From the moment we got to the entrance we had to walk through clouds of cigarette smoke to the front doors to then be greeted by a less than welcoming member of staff. Our room was right above the bar and the music was blaring, luckily we were going out but it was still going when we got back even though they stated the bar closes at 11pm. The noise went on until after midnight with loud banging and door slamming below from staff, to then be woken up at 7am with a light above the window, loud music and banging. I genuinely can't believe they keep guests awake with noise until late and then wake them up at 7am. Worst nights sleep of my life, it ruined my whole trip. We had to drive home the next day rather than spending the day in Nottingham as planned due to being so exhausted. On top of that the images advertised online are clearly old or of better rooms as ours was absolutely filthy (see below pictures) the carpet felt dirty, the lights in the mirror were broke, no shampoo etc. I did not eat here as there weren't a lot of vegan options so I can't comment on the food. I wish I paid more for somewhere else as if you can't even get some sleep in a hotel then it's pointless paying for one.

Rooms were what you would expect to get for the price. Clean, Beds comfy, tea coffee available in room, we even got a lovely river view!

The unicorn was lovely and very welcoming. Service was very good and attentive, only issue was that the delivery of the meal was rather slow, 1 hour wait but our party of 6 all agreed that it was worth waiting for excellent Sunday lunches and pie and mash. Would definetly return and recommend

The blonde waitress Katherine couldn’t have done more for us. She was so inviting and attentive to me and my family and went out of her way to make our experience. The food was lovely and they accommodated to our needs without hesitation. The manager Caz was equally as lovely! Can’t wait to come again, highly recommend! :)

Hi, family decided to treat me to Sunday lunch! Overall very nice! Only one complaint!! Daughter in law had a Roast Beef dinner, she was not inpress at all, t beef was fatty, Yorkshire pudding was full of grease, think it was £15, BUT t rest of us, food very nice!

Good price, good food and great service, the hotel is situated by the river and has ample parking front and rear.... Food is good and service even better... Dog friendly bar area great for a stop off when passing by. Relaxing and good beer... Wainrights Amber.... Very smooth... Would come again.......

35 minute wait for food was unacceptable . No explanation for the delay. Naan bread was inedible. Was very disappointed and won’t be going again.

Carolynne was a great host, food was lovely and hot, didn’t have to wait long. The Gammon steaks were perfect… with egg and pineapple 😁

Had a lovely couple of days here during the Valentines period. Food was excellent and the staff were lovely and attentive. Carolynne served us our meals and was so smiley and chatty 😊 We will definitely be returning x

We enjoyed my Daughter's 40th Birthday lunch there today. The food was excellent and the service by Catherine and Leah was extremely good they were both attentive professional and friendly throughout nothing was too much trouble. A delightful lunchtime treat. Five stars all the way.

Booked a table for the Freddie Mercury tribute night. The food arrived quickly, was hot and very enjoyable. Kathryn and Ryan were very friendly and efficient. The entertainment was very enjoyable and overall a great night out with family and friends. Will be booking for the next entertainment night!

The location is gorgeous and the restaurant is cosy and welcoming. The staff are friendly and the food and drinks are very good. Thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment night and will be booking a table for the next one.

We came for the advertised queen night and wow what a great night it was!! The singer was brilliant and the food and serve great considering how busy the place was. We will definitely be looking to book one of the other nights that the site has advertised.

Expensive and mediocre everything. Staff seem to be stressed even when quiet, ales are not good for a brewery owned pub.

Wow,wow absolutely brilliant stay. We stayed for 2 nights . Ryan and his team are very attentive and nothing was not a problem for them. We had dinner 2 nights let me tell you the food is outstanding. The mixed grill is right up there, the homemade Kebab is out of this world. The room was warm and very quiet with a beautiful view over the Trent . Even thou it was a bit chilly. If you’re in the area it’s worth staying we will be back. Ryan you got a good team you work hard as well as your staff . Keep up the good work .

There food here has drastically improved since the new management, keep up the excellent work. The last management let standard slip to a point where we stopped coming here but we heard of the management change and that the food had improved so much people were raving about it so we decided to give it another try, highly delighted 🤩

Having been to the unicorn on several occasions for the past twenty years, we booked a family lunch for ten of us but the service was very disappointing. We had to wait for drinks which arrived wrong but the main issue was having to pay extra for a jug of gravy . I’ve never had this before and the place was hardly busy. We all felt there was no senior staff to answer to and left to the two young staff.

Lovely view overlooking the river. Very comfortable bed with lovely white bed linen. Good food. Very friendly staff.

Spent the night here. Magnificent value for money (£40 for a wonderful, spacious, clean, double bedroom). Nice good in the restaurant/bar downstairs. Free parking. Full English breakfast for a little over £8……,excellent!

Came here with friends for a Christmas catch up, food and drinks. Was served by Ryan who was very friendly and helpful. We ordered a lasagne, burger and Gammon Steak and all arrived quickly and were delicious. Leah was very polite and checked how the meal was. Couldn't fault the service or the food. We have now booked for the Queen Tribute night.

We had a bad experience, so will not comment too much, service poor, the food we wanted from the menu wasn't available and to be honest not really much to choose but I did have blt ceasar salad with coffee coffee was cold by time I got my meal, half the chicken was cold half warm! I did ask for more hot water for my coffee! My partner had chips as nothing else to her liking we wasn't looking for a full dinner just light snacks... pooreven the pot of tea for my partner had tea rings inside the cup, chopped around the cup edge and teapot spout asked for a clean cup and it took over 10 minutes before I had to chase the waitress again ... and it wasnt that busy .. snacks menu only really unless you want burgers, etc ... very disappointing, barman needs to check out how to smile and loose the attitude... needless to say we won't be back I'm afraid, maybe a bad day for them it was a Friday 12 30!

We came as a family with dogs…. Quite a handful, but felt so welcomed! We were served by Jackie and some others, and all were completely helpful and friendly. A cosy corner has been made with Christmas tree and kids library which was perfect for us to keep out the way with an 8 year old, 4 year old and two grumpy pugs! The hot chocolates were exceptional and food was exactly what we wanted. The Unicorn has become a real family favourite place to escape for a few hours and be looked after by welcoming staff and fun family food

We met up for a family foursome to exchange Christmas gifts for a drink and snack. We were made very welcome
