This our fourth visit at The Unicorn hotel. We love it so much. It's Absolutely Fabulous! Greatly relaxing! A chilled vibe, you can't beat! The room's are roomy! Topped with a comfortable nights sleep! The food at breakfast is amazing.. A fry-up and omelette to die for! My wife loved the range of options for the continental breakfast . The evening meals, are 'sublime.'.. As well as the mouth watering deserts! All in all, 'fantastic value for money' (for dinner and sleep!) Jackie and the team are superb! They go the extra mile to help.. Continue with the amazing job, guys! Looking forward to see Jackie and team on Boxing Day! Kind regards, Richard & Jessica Gonzalez

Went on a Sunday evening, completely empty except for another couple. Staff chatty and welcoming. Decided to have dinner. Despite the place being empty we still had to wait half an hour for the food to arrive. Both chicken dishes were very dry, the vegetables sloppy and overcooked, Yorkshire pudding was bone dry and burnt, I couldn't even cut it, mean with the gravy, all very disappointing. Pointed this out to the waitress who was polite but did not seem surprised. We were offered two complimentary desserts which was nice but such a low standard of food should not leave the kitchen. Lovely setting by the river, plenty of parking, good for a drink but give the food a swerve.

2x Pork Sunday lunch and 1x fish and chips ordered. 2x Turkey brought out. We told the waitress Pork was ordered, she said it wasn't Turkey, it was Pork. My fish arrived, looking torn, and ragged top edge. We told the waitress that she had provided Turkey, not pork - taken away, I was about to start my fish, rolled it over to find that not only hat the top been torn, but the underneath of the fish was torn, and batter removed. a complete mess. I sent this back. The Pork was delivered and enjoyed, my replacement fish was delivered and enjoyed. My 82 year old mother ordered the melting chocolate dome dessert. the caramel sauce that comes with it was not warm enough to melt the 'melting' chocolate dome. I had a 30% off mains voucher, which I used, but otherwise paid the full amount. We are unlikely to return, or recommend to anyone

Definitely gone downhill recently, place starting to look rundown and they don’t have enough staff. Went for Sunday dinner, the main meal was ok and was served quickly but the food was warm and not hot and the food was just piled on the plate and not presented very nicely. Ordered an ice cream sundae and apple crumble, after about 15 minutes they came out and said they don’t have any crumble, so we picked another choice. The 2 ice cream Sundaes came out in a pint glass, I kid you not! They looked awful and were missing a lot of the sauces that they should have come with. Their excuse was, apparently they only have 2 sundae glasses in the whole pub, hence why the ice cream was plonked into a pint glass. Some of the younger staff members didn’t look bothered, at one point the chef had to come out, questioned why a table had not been cleared with one of the waitress who was just stood talking, she ignored the chef and walked off, the chef had to clear the table! It’s a real shame, really like coming here but they need more staff, more communication on what food is actually available and for the younger staff to listen to the chef’s and managers.

Quite drab and worn looking decor, lots of repair jobs, no headboard but just marked walls as seen in photos! The bed was ok Wifi is good The shower was ok Evening meal was limited menu due to a burst water pipe in the restaurant! Went for the chicken and mushroom pie Very overcooked pie with rather tough pastry. Good size portion Not bad value. Breakfast is not included but can be added if wanted. Location right opposite a river with some nice walks. Not much else close by though. Would stay again if there was nothing else close by.

I feel like this place has gone downhill recently, There used to be a time when you could not get parking on a Saturday afternoon, now it's very quiet, don't seem well staffed and felt sorry for bar maid who was doing all the work while the manager just stood about chatting, food was ok but very mediocre slight step up from a brewers fayre/weatherspoons, even though it was very quiet we had to wait a long time to ask for drink or dessert and then forgot about at the end of the meal waiting ages to pay which just sours the whole experience.

We always enjoy stopping in for a drink here after a walk. It never seems to be running as it should though. This time there was a limited menu and the time before there was no food being served at all. It always seems as though there is not enough staff and you are stood waiting to long to be served. The app works for ordering but is is out of date and you end up having to wait at the bar anyway. Plates left on tables outside for too long, again it's comes down to staffing. The price of drinks is extraordinarily high, at nearly 6 pounds a pint. I can't imagine this leads to people having more than one drink. If Marston are happy with the way things are running then they won't change it, but I feel that the stunning location, will eventually, not be enough for the pub to survive in its current guise. On the positive side, the few staff that there are, are very friendly and are happy to help and the location is fantastic.

So disappointed. We went for a family Sunday lunch and booked ahead. We waited nearly 90 minutes for our food (from arrival), without explanation or apology for the delay. When the food arrived it was all lukewarm. No-one came to ask if the food was ok at any point. We will not be returning. On the plus side the menu was good and the optional extras were good so we had high hopes and after 60 mins they did bump up the food for the toddler with us, which was just as well for the ears of the other diners! Food quality was also good, if they can sort out the service it could be superb. Now edited, the day after 4 of our party had upset stomachs. Simply not ok.

Here for Sunday Lunch, the order should have been really simple - four roast dinners. It was half an hour before they took our food order, then another 70 minutes and two chases before it arrived. Two of the meals were incorrect, but after the long wait we declined the offer for them to be changed and ate what we'd been brought. Unlikely to return. -- Hi Amy, thanks for your response below. Communication is certainly important here. We weren't made aware of possible delays when seated, ordering drinks or ordering food. It was only when we chased after an hour that we were told that the kitchen was unusually busy, and at that point the further expected delay still wasn't mentioned.

Booked for Sunday lunch at 1pm. Party of 6 with a toddler. Waited 20 minutes just to order. Waited over an hour and a half for foo! No indication there would be a delay, no apologies for the wait, took ages to get service which was mediocre at best. Had to ask for my daughter’s food to come out as soon as ready as she was starving and getting incredibly bored and frustrated. She’s only 20 months old but there was no awareness from staff at how difficult it would be for a hungry child to wait that long for food and sit still. Luckily we managed to keep her well entertained but it was stressful. When the food eventually arrived it was luke warm at best. Definitely not worth the wait! When asking about the wait there were no apologies or acknowledgement of how long it was taking. The place was not particularly busy, lots of empty tables yet it would have been quicker to catch and cook my own food! Won’t be going back. Very disappointing.

Booked a table & Drove an hour to this pub for Sunday lunch. On arrival we asked about the Sunday lunch but was told they had run out of food for a traditional roast so we had to order different food from The menu, It happens but were surprised as it was only 3.00pm. Another family followed us in & asked about the Traditional Sunday roast they were told that was enough food left for 5 people! I spoke to the lady who was taking orders & questioned her about the response we'd had from another lady about the lack of food situation she went back to the kitchen to ask but never came back! Another lady came about 15 minutes later telling me the other family had pre booked which we had too but she made her excuses. An hour had passed from entering the pub & no food had been delivered. We decided to leave as we found it unacceptable.Other people were also complaining about their waiting time. If the place had been full it might have been acceptable but there were only approx 7 tables occupied throught the pub. The toilets were also dirty. A total disgrace! Only wished we had read the reviews before travelling there. You really do not deserve people's custom.

Pub looks ok although abit scuffed and run down, hasnt been decorated for awhile and looks it. They have a menu that runs till 5pm, 2 courses for £14.99 starter and main,or main and desert. I chose bbq cauliflower drumsticks & my husband chose breaded mushrooms, cauliflower was small florets with a bbq crumb but both starters was ok. For the main i had calimari and fries and my husband had butter chicken goujons, these came out in 2 tiny bowls each on a plate with no salad or veg all four bowls were chipped in multipul places, my husband had a grand total of 3 goujons on his plate with a handful of fries. I did have more on my plate. Not value for money and who wants chipped plates with food on. The other issue was the serving staff was fussing a dog that was licking her hands then serving food. Bit of a let down sadly, fond memories of this pub, Website says Sunday roasts all day we arrived at 5.30 after booking table on their website. Arrived and stood few minutes at hostess area, gave up and got a drink and told to wait. Sat down only to be told ran out of roast, steak and gammon which was half the menu Table was sticky, food under table, we were both starving after a day of DIY and just wanted a decent meal and couldn’t face anymore driving . Lack of options ment we ordered basic burger. Server brought food and spilled some of it on me, ok it happens but she didn’t offer to replace she was lovely and apologised but didn’t offer to get any condiments so had to go looking for vinegar, bacon on burger was burnt not just crispy. No one asked if we wanted drinks while eating tho we had almost empty glasses before food arrived. Real shame as the pub could be lovely To be honest I’ve had better burgers at Burger King. Staff were friendly and polite but not very proactive on service

Unfortunately, it wasn't a great experience. We waited 20 minutes after being seated, before we managed to flag down what appeared to be the only waitress. Our food took a while to arrive, which was a little disappointing, as the restaurant wasn't overly busy. When the food arrived, the two Caesar salads we had ordered, were seriously lacking in dressing. When this was pointed out to the server, she said not to worry, as she would fetch some more dressing. Needless to say she was never seen again. Apart from the lack of dressing, the quality of the salads was poor. Which sadly resulted in most of the food going to waste. Two other members of our party said their meals were okay, if that can be taken as a positive? As we had two children with us who were looking forward to having a pudding, we decided to stay on. However, after 30 minutes waiting, for someone to acknowledge us, let alone take our order. We gave up and went out to the bar to pay the bill. The only positive to come out of this, was the young lady who sorted our bill. She was very apologetic and professional. She took the two salads of the bill and also discounted the balance. Though, as this was a 65th birthday celebration, it was never going to save the evening.

Great setting near the river Trent. Our room (12) had a good view to the front. The room itself was clean but outdated as was a lot of the buildings decor. Needs a makeover. Price wise it was on the costlier side of average but not over expensive. It seemed a bit under staffed as there was always used plates and glasses on empty tables and we often had to move them ourselves before sitting. The staff seemed friendly and polite. In all we enjoyed it there but probably mainly due to meeting up with family and the hotel location.

They do not allow you to come downstairs from your rooms until 8.00am on the dot as according to one manager, it is not legal, even though we had pre ordered breakfast to be served at 8.00am promptly as we had to leave for our destination by 8.15am with a different manager. The first morning we paid at 7.50am for our breakfast and waited, at 8.10am we were told that they had sent the chef home as he was vomiting, so no food. Second morning we had again pre ordered breakfast and came down at 7.50 like the previous day to be told we couldn't be there until 8.00am and that the chef would not be cooking our breakfast until after 8.00am, when explaining that we had pre ordered she said that she was the manager and that should never have happened and that the tills and card machine did not work until 8.00am which is rubbish as it had worked the day before. Very unhelpful service and what a way to treat paying guests, also we were told that if we had of booked direct with the pub we could have had discount on our food thats a joke as it should not matter who we booked through they were being paid the money. After being told my family members that this place was a decent place to eat along with decent sized portions you can only imagine my horror when I got served what I can only describe as a weatherspoons dinner at triple the price. We waited 50 minutes for our food to come (there was 8 of us so expected a little bit of a wait but not 50 minutes) drinks took 15 minutes to come and the bar wasn't even slightly busy. I had to take back mine and my daughters Pepsi because mine was practically flat and my daughter has some sort of scum floating on the top, I assumed it was either from the pipes being cleaned or from the glass cleaner, these got replaced with no hesitation. When the food did come it was a ridiculous sized portion, no onion rings with the burgers, no coleslaw just a burger with chips. My daughter had the 8oz sirloin steak which was tough and burnt to a crisp (she actually left her steak and she never does that) this cost us £18.50! Again she got a steak, chips, mushroom and a tomato, again nothing else which is obviously stated on the menu but again was expecting a bigger portion of the other stuff as this would reflect the extorniate price. The picture I've uploaded is of my hunters chicken, I needed a steak knife to be able to cut through it as it was that tough and I didn't even get a full chicken breast, it was a bit and bobber job. Again I got a slice of lettuce and about 20 chips, if that. We mentioned to our waitress that we wasn't happy and she just said "I'm sorry to hear that" never asked to see if we wanted a discount or anything as compensation. The only people that enjoyed their meal had a carvery but even then the peas were like bullets and the stuffing had a powdery texture. If you are after amazing food and great sized portions that reflects the prize, DO NOT come here. Overpriced and according to my family members it's gone completely down hill. I will never spend £85 for a family of 4 (including a kids meal which by the way the chicken dippers looked like they had been massively overcooked) we have all walked away still hungry with massive food disappointment. Oh the sea bass was overcooked too! Everything was just awful.

We were seated near the kitchen and had the unfortunate view of seeing and hearing a kitchen member shouting and slamming around the kitchen. The way he spoke/shouted to other staff members was completely unacceptable and we witnessed him making a young waitress cry. Our starters were all fine, however some of the main meals were over cooked and dry/chewy - we did not comment on this at our check back as the waiting staff were clearing dealing with enough from the kitchen. Our waitress Paula was lovely and did her best to smooth over such an uncomfortable atmosphere, but overall it really was a terrible evening.

The food was terrible, burnt greasy chicken dippers with no salad or vegetables and likewise a burnt bun on the burger and no salad just a small soggy piece of lettuce on the burger.

Pub is great, how ever the hotel isn't! Rooms are ridiculously hot with no aircon or no fans, found sleeping quite uncomfortable

I come and stay at unicorn when visiting my girlfriend, the beds are quite large, and rooms are a good size too. Tv does what it's meant to, we did struggle with it but a quick call to the unicorn staff and they were there within minutes to fix it. Very friendly staff. Only thing was the noise on the first floor up was quite loud, I could hear karaoke from my room but it wasn't that bad considering it stops eventually.

Very overpriced food menu. From the outside the building looks scruffy & sad. If you are going to charge these prices, you need to 'smarten up' the outside.

We reserved a table for a Sunday lunch as 6 people, it was very busy, and when we arrived on time they didn’t have a table ready for us… so clearly wasn’t reserved! Asked us to wait at the bar and then when we got seated it took a while for the server to come around to us. When we sat the server told us a huge amount of things were unavailable, but apparently she didn’t quite cover everything as we were to find out! We ordered drinks, and for a table of 6 the drinks maybe took 30 minutes to arrive. We were told 10 minutes after ordering that one of the drinks were unavailable. When we ordered food it took over an hour to arrive and we had to ask the waitress to check on it 45 minutes in. When it finally did arrive two of the items were wrong, and were dishes not even on the menu, from the old specials menu! We didn't send back as we had already waited over an hour at that point. We also got a second round of drinks at that point which again took another 30 minutes. I had the trio of roasts, and it was mediocre - the meat was good, but the roasted potatoes ended up being mashed potatoes (which we didn't know), the yorkshire was overdone, the vegetables bland and tasteless, and the crackling so tough I had to spit it out because I couldn't bite through it. The veggie roast pie was clearly not homemade either, just bought frozen and thrown into the oven. Overall a rather disappointing experience - the waitress was informed of all the issues and offered us a discount on our food bill but when this was brought only a pound (on a nearly £300 bill) had been taken off. Finally after much discussion she granted us 20% off our bill, as we walked out we passed another table sending their food back for being cold and another complaining about another uniformed substitution! Yikes! Feel bad for the waitresses who clearly were having to deal with substantial issues in the kitchen and understaffing.

I used to love this pub but there is obviously not enough staff. Booked for table service, but was told when we got there that we had to order at the bar. Food wait was 30 minutes which we didn’t mind too much, although it was only 12:15pm. I had sea bass and am sure the new pototoes had been heated in the microwave. My daughters had burger, the butter chicken burger my daughter said was very salty. Then we ordered dessert, sticky toffee pudding. After 45 minutes wait we chased to see how long it would be, I am sure this was also heated in the microwave because it had very hard parts around the edges which we couldn’t eat. The 3 girls who were working behind the bar and delivering food were amazing, friendly but rushed off their feet. I was totally disappointed with a pub I used to love.

Took over 1 hour 15 for 2 starters. Soup came out luke warm, didn't send it back as we were so hungry and friends were still waiting on their food. Cost almost 7 pound for 4/5 small chicken bites... Food was nice, but cold and took way too long. There were board games we attempted to use when waiting for food, but all were broken and had too many pieces missing. Nice location, dog friendly.

The food was great apart from the onion ring side order that arrived extremely burnt! The atmosphere has gone down hill since its rotisserie chicken days. There was a huge glass urn/vase in the way of scenic view which would have been ok if it was clean. However it was filthy with dust so that you could barely see through the glass and and it was filled with some oddments of 1970’s faux flowers that didn’t even make an arrangement. Beautiful pub just needs some attention in areas to warrant the £100 for 3 food bill.

To be honest this pub doesn’t even deserve 1 star, it’s deserves to be burnt to the ground! The staff are absolutely disgusting. I went to the bar and asked for a bottle of Stella which she gave me. As I walked away I noticed it was a non alcoholic one… which I didn’t ask for. I politely went back and told the staff member she gave me the wrong drink. She then said the Stella bottles are the only non alcoholic ones and that they don’t do normal Stella. Which she never mentioned when serving me. I said could she please just give me another bottle of beer as I never asked for non alcoholic. And she said she would have to charge me for another bottle! I then asked why as this was not my wrong doing, it was hers for not mentioning that the Stella bottles are non alcoholic. I asked to speak to the manager and she also refused to give me another bottle for free and said it was my fault, even tho I never asked for a non alcoholic beer, they then said the are going to refuse to serve me anymore drinks and that I am barred. Absolutely disgusting!!

Absolutely awful. The worst hotel experience I've had, still frustrated we actually stayed there. Rude and unfriendly staff, disgusting rooms with no heating, bricked walls with no insulation, dirty duvets covered in rips and holes, ridiculously loud, people banging from 5am, by that point we'd had enough and left. Not forgetting the awful smell of grease throughout the hotel, receptionist wasn't helpful at all and didn't want to change our room even though she gave us a different one to what we booked. I'm covered in bites from bed bugs, disgusting. Easily the dirtiest and worst hotel I've ever been to.

First time I ordered a takeaway and my order was not accepted and declined as informed by Just Eat. Ordered well before 4pm but took until gone 6pm for them to decline.
