Excellent service, delicious Sunday roast and a nice atmosphere. As a local, I haven’t been here for a very long time, as all the above was lacking, but I would thoroughly recommend.

The 6 of us celebrating my mama’s birthday had never visited the Unicorn before and we’re so happy we did ! I don’t usually write reviews but absolute credit where it’s due. The staff were friendly and very hospitable, the food was brilliant and Ian, the chef introduced himself to our table and made us very welcome. He even personally sang happy birthday with a special dessert. Thank you all and we shall be back !

We ate here twice while we were staying in Somerton and the food was pretty good. I had a lovely goat's cheese and avocado salad. We went back a second time because we couldn't manage a dessert the first time. It was a bit quiet but it was mid-week and the desserts were good.

We booked the Unicorn Hotel for a wake following my father's funeral in Somerton. We had mainly booked it as it was close to the Church and we weren't familiar with any of the businesses. We can't recommend the Unicorn highly enough. They put on a fantastic hot buffet which was replenished regularly and catered well for our vegetarian and gluten free family. The staff were helpful and friendly and we were allowed to use the bar and restaurant area solely for the afternoon. Thank you so much to Nick and his staff for making a difficult day much easier.

We went in to have a drink. After being shouted at for not doing track and trace which we had we were then told rudely to wait at the door. Carman and the other waitress clearly should not work in a pub as they really do not want to serve you. This is the second time I have had this experience with the unicorn. The first was just before christmas. We wanted food then but despite waiting for 40 minutes and other people being served before us who arrived after we were unsuccessful. I will not go back to this pub now until they replace the terrible staff. The atmosphere is poor and really they just dont want to be there

First lunch out since lockdown and we chose this place - why? The menu is very limited (pies and burgers) and everything floating in a sea of gravy, even the chips. The couple on the next table sent a main course back twice. You would think that after being closed for such an extended period, they would be anxious to please, practised their skills and reconsidered their menu. How difficult is it to heat a pie, cook frozen chips or flip a burger?

As the pubs re opened this month me and my friends decided to go to the unicorn, unfortunately as soon as we got there we realised we had made the wrong choice and tried to go to the globe however they were full - save yourself the trouble and just go to the globe or anywhere else if you don’t want to be served by a rude and impolite waitress. There’s not really much of a story to write about because all I did I was come in and sit down but apparently that was just a bit too much for Carmen - she said, and I quote, “if she doesn’t change her attitude I’m going to f*cking knock her out” How pleasant.I can understand if it sounds like I’m missing some parts out but trust me I’m not, this is just what she’s like apparently and I know this because afterwards I went to the kebab shop and there was a man who I’ve never met before and he was sat in there as well. We got to chatting and he told me the unicorn is his local but he avoids going there because of that same women and how she treats people. I wore my mask when needed, i wasn’t disruptive - however I think she might think differently as I did get told to “sit down or get out” because I stood a foot away from my seat to be near a fire... Anyway just a word of warning...go if you’re looking for an unprovoked fight because carmen is gagging for one!

Have been trying to get a delivery from the unicorn for the past three months as they advertise takeaway and delivery, living in Somerton you would think that getting a delivery would be easy, so three months of trying, and pretty much a different excuse each time. I’m waiting for when they run out of excuses “my wife’s not very well”, “wife’s having a night off”, “the delivery car is in the opposite direction of where you live”, “the delivery car is off the road at the moment”. On the bright side, Chubbies of Langport deliver after 8pm and Spice Corner of Ilchester deliver whenever they are open.

We stopped here on the way home from a short break in Dorset. We wanted something for a late lunch and were not disappointed. They have an excellent value fixed price lunchtime menu and we opted for 2 courses for £8; which they have up til 4pm. The starters we chose were the whitebait and the creamy garlic mushrooms: they were delicious. For our mains we had the Unicorn sausage roll and the fish goujons; the batter for which was extremely light and crispy which I was told ( by the landlord?) was down to the beer batter. The portions were ample and certainly filled us up as well as being amazing value. We will certainly visit again if passing by. The waiting/bar staff are a credit to the establishment: extremely friendly and polite.

I had heard that the live music put on at the Unicorn was worth attending. So without further a do I noticed on their FB page that they had a band coming up on the Friday night. Well I wasn’t left disappointed by the politeness of the staff, the drinks available and the entire atmosphere that the pub produced during this event. The music was good, the personalities in the pub was friendly and good vibes. Lots of laughter, lots of smiles and a great feel about it. A big TV was on in the pub for the sport also if that tickled your fancy.I shall definitely be attending again in the near future. A few weeks before we went to the Unicorn my husband went in to confirm that it was a Carvery that they served on Sundays, and not just Roast Dinner. He was assured it was a proper Carvery, and was taken through into the Dining Room and shown the Carvery Set-Up. So two weeks prior to the day we wanted to go in he rang and booked a table for four by a window. On the day we met up in the bar for a drink before the Carvery. We ordered our drinks and I asked for my drink to have ice & lemon with it and a straw. It arrived with the ice and lemon, but no straw, so I asked again for the straw only for the obnoxious barman to say "would you like me to drink it for you too ?", what a rude man, he needs to learn some manners. On being shown through into the Dining Room we were taken to a table in the middle of the room on the walkway by the kitchen. On complaining we had booked a table by a window the waitress then said we had better sit at a table over from the walkway, which was somewhat squashed up. On looking at the Carvery range, there was nothing there !!! The waitress said there was no Carvery, it would be plated up in the kitchen and brought through with a variety of vegetables in a dish. We were all extremely annoyed at this and felt we had been misled. I was all for leaving and going somewhere else but as my husband pointed out decent Carvery venues would be booked up so we would have to make do. On asking if the Beef was nice and rare, we were told no it was well cooked. Three of us certainly did not want cremated Beef so the waitress pointed out the "Specials Board". Our two friends chose the Chicken & Pepper Fahita, while I chose the Tagliatelli and my husband decided to stick with the Beef. When the Chicken & Pepper Fahitas arrived it was very greasy and although our friends struggled to eat in the end they gave up and left it. My Tagliatelli just had a couple of slivers of hard ham/bacon in it and two slices of what appeared to be Toasted French Stick on top which someone had rubbed a clove of Garlic over so they could call it Garlic Bread", it was disgusting. When my husbands Beef Dinner arrived none of us could believe what we saw. The two slices of Beef looked like shoe leather and he could hardly cut it, it was so tough. It came with a hard overcooked Yorkie and three small roast potatoes. The Vegetable Selection was minute and totally under cooked. My Tagliatelli was a pound more expensive than the Fahitas even though it was just pasta with virtually no meat in it whatsoever, oh and not forgetting the foul "Garlic Bread", they should have been paying me to attempt to eat that !!! On being asked if we would like desserts we all hardly surprisingly declined. I felt sorry for the waitresses having to serve the diners with such appalling food. We made a quick exit and went to a Tea Room for Teas/Coffees and Cakes to cheer ourselves up. Needless to say we will not be returning to the Unicorn unless it is under new management with a new cook/chef. And would we recommend the Unicorn to anyone..........most definitely NOT !!!

We visited the Unicorn for Sunday Carvery. When booking, our friend was assured there would be a proper carvery and that we would be sat at a window table. Neither came about. Instead of a carvery there was an ordinary roast lunch on offer that was dished up in the kitchen, not the same as being able to see your meat being carved and choosing your own vegetables. My husband and I decided not to have the roast as we were told the beef was 'well done' and we prefer it to be on the rare side. Instead we had a sort of Mexican make your own taco thing. This turned out to be rather tasteless and neither of us enjoyed it. One of our friends had some garlic bread that she thought was a joke, bread toasted on one side with a bit of garlic rubbed over it - very disappointing.

A group of friends have met at the Unicorn for an evening meal for several years. Recently the pub was taken over and the quality of the food has plummeted to an all time low. Microwave and the freezer appears to be their best friends. The food was just warm not hot- 5 out of 6 meals, so not a one off. There wasn't anyone to speak to, so against our better judgement, we ate the meal.Dessert consisted of frozen chocolate roulade, obviously a left over from christmas as it still has the decorative holly on it! The cream was sour and obviously past the eat by date.Three of us had the tropical fruit and meringue- a little underwhelming. A shop bought very small meringue, with 4 thin slices of apple and pear, this wasn't served with anything else, not even a dollop of icecream ! where was our tropical feast? This certainly was not what I had conjured up in my mind! For £4.95 I expected at least some semblence to a dessert. Needless to say they werent eaten. Then the fun began, an apathetic apology by one of the managing staff. The duty manager was 'too busy' to come and hear our concerns and ignored us completely. We were left waiting for 20 minutes and were obviously expected to leave. We persisted to ask to speak to the manager, who was eventually contacted by phone. All I can say is his rudeness and aggressive attitude was astonishing. His people skills were sadly lacking. All I shall say is -if you want a relaxing, well cooked meal. Don't go to the Unicorn.

This tempted us all to have a meal, as it looked so lovely. My son and I had the pie and a pint special for £10. I enjoyed a turkey, ham and leek pie with mash and my son had a steak and ale pie with chips. The pies were really good quality with loads of meat inside, you didn't have to delve through the sauce to find it! The portion sizes were on the large side, and the food was cooked to perfection. My daughter went for deep fried brie starter, which was really substantial, and she had a side order of cheesy chips, which were hot, plentiful and delicious. Our meals (LIver & Bacon, Ham & Eggs, Cottage Pie & Vegetables) were all well cooked, well presented with a healthy serving of each. Our host, who I presume was the landlord, was very friendly and helpful. Seemed that when we stayed in Somerton nearly all the other eating establishments were shut so settled for a pub meal. The Unicorn is an old inn with a great inglenook fireplace, guns, saws and brasses on the ceiling and frequented by locals. Very friendly and helpful staff and a typical pub menu plus a specials board. The home cooked steak and ale pie was however very good and brilliant chips! We would give this meal 4 stars. The scampi and chips though, while nothing wrong with it - it is however difficult to make frozen food outstanding. Worth a visit but not exactly cheap for what it was - £10.95 per meal.

We ate here on the Sunday night we stayed in Somerton at the Lynch Country House. When we walked in, there were two young waitresses in the hallway, who smiled as we entered, but there was nobody behind the bar. We stood there for a while and the girls knew we were there, but they unfortunately didn't have the training in customer service to acknowledge we were waiting and explain the bar man had gone to the cellar or wherever, and would be with us shortly. Eventually I had to approach one of them and ask how we could buy a drink! They were friendly and efficient when serving us our food - no complaints there. We both had the roast beef, which was okay, but for the price expected a slightly better quality beef. Nice beer though!

We ate here on a Sunday night as it was the only place open for food within walking distance of our B&B and we were both unimpressed with our meals. The pub itself is very nice with a good atmosphere and was quite full however the food really lets this place down. When we saw the menu and in particular the prices we thought we were in for a gastro pub treat but we were very much mistake. The Chicken Kiev was large but very dry, overcooked and tasteless. The lasagne was also large but greasy and appeared to be made from cheap mince. The ambience in the pub is the only reason that I haven't rated it lower.

A traditional pub with an unpretentious restaurant in an historic building in a small country town - the Unicorn provides what you would hope to find - not exceptional, not cordon bleu, but nicely cooked, genuine food, well priced and completely satisfying. Thoroughly enjoyed the service as well.

Good choice of food which was of very good quality. The portions were very generous - we struggled to finish our main courses. Very good value for money. Good choice of beers as well!

We ate at the Unicorn on their "Steak Night". The menu seemed complex (and pretentious) for a pub, and pricey for the goods on offer. And so it proved when the meal arrived. I ordered a ribeye steak, my wife a three-fish dish. The steak was tolerable, but virtually tasteless; accompanying vegetables sparse and equally flavourless, the chips limp and pale. My wife's fish was plain horrible; one of the three being so tough even the steak knife couldn't cut it. Clearly overcooked from frozen to a zombie-like state. Just horrible. She had to ask for the vegetables, the waitress forgot them. When they were arrived they were mostly notable for the minuscule serving. Service was erratic and we twice had to ask for attention. Couldn't wait to leave - paid the bill and left. Grim.

Since the previous head chef moved to the Market Bistro down the road, the menu seems to be less adventurous and quality seems to have suffered. Conversation overheard from a nearby table: "I'm not going to complain, he'll be cooking my breakfast too! But I'm not going to eat it either".

We chose this one in preference to The White Hart, The Globe and the Market Bar&Bistro because of the wide range of unusual dishes shown on the menu in the porch (Duck Confit to Barnsley Chop this week). Once we'd gone inside we found there were even more menu pages to study and, fortunately, the food lived up to expectations. We arrived in the restaurant at a busy time, so although everyone near us was already eating we had quite a wait - during which we watched other people's food leaving the kitchen and heading to the bar (which is served from the same menu). The landlady seemed a bit harassed, but we were reassured that this is normal - and that the long-serving staff are those who don't let it bother them! It also seemed clear that no-one polishes water marks off the wine-glasses when they come out of the dishwasher (see similar comment by B0087, under Hotel reviews, for some reason).Because of the good food we're inclined to eat here again once we've tried out the competition, but doubt if they'll be able to compete on authentic 17th century architecture.

Went recently for an evening meal and the service and food left a lot to be desired. Firstly, the landlady that took our order was rather rude. As there was a big group of us she went round the table taking orders and nearly walked away without taking 2 people's orders!! Not even a 'sorry'! The food took around 30 minutes to come out. I had carbonara which is served with garlic bread. They forgot my garlic bread so i was left waiting for it for a further 10 minutes, the when it did come out it was burnt! For the amount they charge for the food i must say i expected sooooo much better food AND service. The dining area is a little cramped and with the flustered landlady running around it doesn't feel too comfortable. We also had problems in the bar, where we were served our drinks in glasses with lipstick already on them and cracks. The coke was also flat.A bad experience all round i'd say! Will definately not be spending my hard earned money here again!

We have visited this pub on several occasions and you would be hard pressed to find a friendlier place to eat and drink. Gordy and Caroline are sweet and can't do enough for you. The pub has a great, warm atmosphere, and the food is excellent. Very traditional Old English pub with rooms and dining area, although meals can be enjoyed in the bar, next to the massive roaring log fire. Would certainly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

We did not stay overnight as we were in a nearby B&B. However we did visit for a drink and meal. Very mixed feelings. Starters were fantastic. Service prompt and efficient sorting the issue with corked wine with no problems at all. 1 main meal was fine, the other was awful. The risotto was dry and crispy on the bottom - according to the chef it was supposed to be like this as the serving plate was very hot. What can you say with that response? Just very disappointed and my opinion of the chef that had been so good after the starters went to rock bottom.

Stopped in for lunch as we've passed this place often on the way to and from our sons university in Hampshire and thought we'd give it a go. The place is a bit mad but fun. Friendly servers appear to be from Eastern Europe and sometimes have a job understanding what you are ordering. The food was plentiful and hot, everyone enjoyed their meals. Service was pretty good and quick too, but it wasn't that busy only three other small groups dining. However when my husband went to pay he was over charged for my portion of fish and chips (the price on the menu stated £12.90, he was charged £16.99 for an 'Evening fish and chips' as I discovered on returning home, so check your receipts before leaving) also be aware a 10% service charge is also added to the bill, we always tip but don't favour restaurants who do this. Would we return? Possibly but not definitly.

We visited for some drinks on Wednesday 8th and were really well looked after, lovely cocktails and presented nicely. We decided to go back on the Saturday for pizza and more drinks! The pizzas were really good, nice thin base and plenty of good quality toppings. Definitely recommend :)

We had soup, ham, leek etc soup it was very nice. I think the menu could be expanded a little to include sandwiches, filled roll etc. The big change that is needed is the menu itself, it's almost unreadable, poor brown card and small black writing is not a good combination. A blackboard would be better!
