Udaya Restaurant - London's Premier Kerala Restaurant in Newham

The smallest portion you could ever get. Spent nearly £16 on the tiniest portion of curry which wasn't even edible. Ordered a spicy mutton madras, the taste was so bland that my 2 year old could have it. Didn't want to.waste it so added pickle, even then it tasted bland. I've had madras before and this wasn't it, this was a boiled curry with dry pieces of meat, sprinkles of masala powder and a couple of pieces of red peppers and onions.

Excellent authentic Keralan food which, for me, is the best of all Indian cuisines. Really friendly staff. Thoroughly recommended.

On 3rd May, I ordered the Seabream Pollichathu dish from your menu, which was priced at £22. Upon further inquiry and comparison with other restruants, I discovered that the same dish is offered at significantly lower prices, often less than £12. Given that Seabream is not an exceptionally expensive fish, I find it difficult to justify the substantial price difference between your restaurant and others in the area. I understand that pricing may vary between restaurants but such a notable difference raises concerns about transparency and fairness in your pricing structure. As a loyal customer who appreciates the quality of your food and service, I believe it is important to address this issue promptly.

Awful experience Staff are so rude. We had to wait for our food over an hour when asked the staff memeber she totally blanked us kept avoiding us. I had to get up and follow her she didn't seemed too bothered kept saying 5 minutes. By now everyone around us had their dinner on other table but Staff didn't even bother to check on our table. After several times back and forward ee got out starter half of it drinks came late when we finished eating. When asked to see manager she came to me with an attitude rolled her eyes whilst talking to me. At the end nothing was resolved no apology nor did offer discount. Never ever go there to ruin your outing

Food is good when it eventually arrives, but service is poor. No concept of starter then main, etc. Everything is budled together or main comes after starter or worse still they forgot to pass the order to the kitchen, so order. They have recently hiked up their prices very high, jumping on the cost of living band wagon. Like Appams are now £4.50 whare as other local nearby shops it is only £3.00.

Absolutely poor customer service, quite laid back. We had to ask more than thrice for water while I was choking. But nobody seemed to care.Although they apologised that they were short staffed but we noticed there was a quite laid back approach and biased towards certain customers which is a shame as they must treat all customers equally as we paid the same charges. At 8.30 pm they ran out of almost all popular foods selections such as parotta and all varieties of parotta , hence we ordered biryani and this is the first time in UK I found prawn biryani ,hardly of any prawns in there.food quite average and starters are overpriced.Very very disappointing experience….I believe going to a restaurant is a experience, and that experience is made beautiful by the staff working in the restaurant. This restaurant completely failed in doing so unfortunately.

Went with my school mates aft a span of 25 years. Beef fry came out so nice and spicy, the fish pollichathu was also so good but a huge para fish was laid on our table. The most remarkabke one was the porotta, that's a must try.the two girls made sure we been looked after very well and ensured excellent service. Wish u all the best fo the whole team👍

We went there after long time since Covid, it used to be our favourite restaurant. we got there around 5pm to avoid congestion as we were told restaurant is in full operation. we have been given a menu, decided what to order then we told waiter what we chose. answer was, they weren’t available right now. only available menu was dosa. we were told that they will start serving rest of menu from 6pm. so shocking. we negotiated and managed to order 2 starters from 5.30pm, ended up waiting for 6pm but still some menu weren’t available. bad operation. we went all the way to enjoy the meal but ruined in every aspect. never again.

I came here after a long time. The chicken biryani wasn't so great. They've lost their touch. May be it's a new chef. Then I tried the paal appam, again too much salt and not enough sugar. The food wasn't great.

Hi Stop delivering spoiled sambar, chutney kept in the fridge. cold chutney, respect your customer health value than money.

Pathetic experience- had severe food poisoning and stomach infection after eating at this place on Sunday, 22 Aug. Shame on them feeding people stale and contaminated food on festival after charging so much per plate. Never goin back to this place and will complain also.

Me and my friends are really enjoyed this evening with udaya's delicious food. Very calm place with good music. We ordered Barotta, Beef roast, fish fry , fish polllichathu and kappa@fish curry. We were really loved it. Food was mouth watering smell and very tasty. Thanks for chef and the owner of udaya restaurant. Lovely evening😍😍😍 Great appreciation 🤩🤩

No doubt the food is good. Ordered the popular fish, mutton kottu and vechu parottas. We told them just plain parothas no onions or chilli, to our disappointment when we got home the parothas had chillies and onions. We called them and they told us to return the parothas and get ones without. Extremely disappointed is a statement!!!!

I’ve ordered mutton Briyani from here and it was so disgusting. The rice was old and dry and mutton pieces were so inedible and hard to consume since it was not cooked appropriately. Called the restaurant to speak about the food and spoke to a guy who says he’s the chef named saju and has defended it saying it was made fresh and wasn’t happy to listen and kept arguing back. DISGRACEFUL SERVICE AND THEY NEED TO LEARN SOME CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS AS WELL AS MANNERS!.

I have to say superb non vegetarian food . The Indian beef fry and other Indian dishes don’t come any more authentic than this in all of London . The best restaurant tucked away from the cheap high street in Eastham. My wife who is Caucasian also loves it because they cater a milder version of the spices for her . Hope they keep up the standards and move to a classier place near central London so it’s easier for us get there .

The crab curry is the best I have ever eaten. I love this restaurant.

We called querying the freshness of food in particular the parotha. Upon pick up of our delivery we were assured the parotha was made fresh. After travelling an hour home we opened the items to find the parotha was clearly frozen- dry, flaky and stacked as it came straight from the box. We called to address this and was told they watch the chefs on CCTV make it fresh. Clearly a lie which made the whole thing far more bitter. Everything including portion sizes are overpriced in comparison to their competitors. I understand the restaurant is under new ownership so they may be cutting costs which is more than understandable in this climate but there’s no reason to lie to customers. We’ve been going to this restaurant for years as a family but no more.

By reading few review i went there for a dinner and the food i got was not well cooked and the curry i ordered was for sure made atleast 2 days before that .i would never be going there anymore

I have ordered take away for a special occasion (Onam )and everything was confirmed by the lady who took the order the day before and asked me to come at 12:30 promptly to collect the food. When I went to collect, there were few people in the queue and I waited for my turn. Then the owner himself come out and said there is food for only for the people who paid in advance and no more would be available. I was quite surprised and very disappointed as the lady didn’t mention anything about payment in advance when she took the booking and only asked for full name and phone number. There was no apology from the owner himself but sarcastically said if there is anything left over, I can offer you but you will have to wait for 90 minutes to see if there any! If this wasn’t a special day, I would have got food from other places but it was too late to get food from near by restaurants as they were all fully booked. The place and the owner let us down massively with an awful service! My gentle reminder to him would be “Don’t bite off more than you can chew” Never again!

Just had the most delicious egg curry & prawn pakora with barottas. All perfectly cooked & delicious & very reasonably priced. Best Keralan food outside of Kerala. Highly recommend & will definitely be going back again & again

The bitiyani was not good at all so is the chicke fry boneless. First time when I purchased the above item last week, it was nice hence why I have ordered last night. Really disappointed and I will not be spending money in there ever again. Can I have my refund for biryani and chicken fry please. Other food was good

Hired the top private room for a small get together. Customer service was super!!! Had amazing food! The prawn curry was delicious. Would defiantly recommend this restaurant.

So let’s start with the positives - the food was okay but the service was the worse service I have ever encountered. The waitress had no clue on how to listen and take orders. As a result our food was all wrong and we had to wait an hour and a half for the main course. The waiter and waitress started to argue with us when after two hours they gave us the Okra curry which we refused to accept. When the food did arrive they just shoved the plates on the middle of the table rather than give us what we had ordered. Some of the dishes were cold. We then had to remind them to give us cutlery and glasses. It was just shockingly very bad service but the food was okay.

My food never arrived. I have clear instructions to ring me on my no. When they arrive at the designation as I used a public platform to collect the order. The restaurant never delivered the food to me and never rang me and have the excuse that I chose a public platform for delivery. I’ve had food from them before which was alright, shame for their delivery service, I’ll never order again. And lost my 30+ quid for nothing. No food and no refund and nothing!! Most horrible experience

Love every single dish on the menu. The best Kerala food in Londodn. Biriyani is delicious so are the curries and other sides. Highly recommend Udaya restaurant for a meal with friends or family or for special occasions.

Si usted es keralita, será atendido. Si no es así, no pierdas el tiempo yendo allí. Yo y mi familia fuimos a trabajar al hotel para cenar, nos dijeron que esperaran 30 minutos a pesar de que había asientos libres. Cuando regresé en 20 minutos, dijo que el asiento había sido asignado a otra persona. Vergonzoso y ni siquiera piensa en el pequeño bebé de 2 años con nosotros. No es amigable para el cliente, restaurante extremadamente pequeño noMenos que un depósito de chatarra. Nunca visitaré este basurero.

My food was cold and the delivery was over an hour late,the driver didn’t deliver food to my door instead I had to step out and walk down my road as the driver said he was a cabbie and that it wasn’t his job to come to the door...furious with my order

Ordered by 1:00 pm and got it delivered by 2:30 pm i think uber eats deliver food in 20 mins for the same restaurent. Felt uber eats is quicker than just eat.

Food was good but the portions are ridiculously small for the price. Chili paneer has just a few pieces of the cheese at £7 and all dishes came with two massive pieces of tomato inside trying to make it look bigger. I will stick to my regular restaurant next time.

We ordered their speciality fish, mixed grilled and pal appam. The food took over 45 minutes to come. If you are starving it's best to avoid this restaurant. Food was worth the wait though!

I haven’t had such good Indian food in the UK before. Felt like authentic keralite food, not something toned down for British appeal. Also loved the Indian music. Highly recommended.

I have been coming here occasionally for takeaways but recently the food portions are getting smaller with cost going up.

We were 7 people and come to London for Cricket world cup and had a very nice dinner at this restaurant. We had Crab and Malabar chicken biryani. Brilliant. Will visit again if i visit London. The beef was very tasty and just like in Kerala. The waiter was very attentive as well. Happy to see Malayalees doing great food in London.

We had some great food. Milk Appams, Egg Appams, Chicken Masala dosas and Kanava Thoran. Except for the latter everything else was amazingly tasty

I got to say this place has taken me by surprise. The food is outstanding! Service was good and the chap was very attentive. Not often do you find such gems in London and Udaya's is surely a must visit restaurant.

This place is absolutely the best for Kerala food. My girlfriend who has moved in locally a few months ago is from Kerala and this is now my first choice whenever i go to visit. As it is located not in the high street we never noticed this place at first. It was only thanks to a local councillor friend that we got to visit Udaya. The place is small but extremely clean and tidy. The food is delightful and is purely authentic. If your ever in the area then try Udaya and you won't be disappointed!

Typical Kerala Cuisine. Tried few items only. Menu is too big and the Kal Dosa is delicious. Kerala parotta is very nice. Friday to Sunday special meal is served and expect more crowd.

Went out for dinner on a Saturday night with my friend and his family who are from Kerala and i was extremely impressed with the food having spent time myself in the South of India.

We went there first time for their special set meal for Vishu. It was served on banana leaf and it felt like a very nicely cooked home food. With lentil, vegetables etc. The next time we went their and had non vegetarian which was also decent.

Visited with 7 friends. The good points are that the restaurant is clean, and the food is tasty. It is also reasonably priced.

Fuimos a celebrar Vishu / Año Nuevo y la comida era buena. Sin embargo la forma en que se organizó fue muy mala. Demasiadas personas están abarrotadas en 3 mesas y la gente va aquí y allá y realmente no se puede disfrutar de la comida. Y el tipo que servía papadums usaba su mano. Agradecería si pudiera por favor usar guantes.

It was worth travelling 1.5 hrs to get their famous pothichoru . Loved it to bits and the staff are very friendly and professional . Will definitely go back for more , the taste brought some nostalgic memories .

Estado Udaya restaurante en tres o cuatro ocasiones y cada vez la comida ha sido fantástica. Adecuada comida casera de Kerala. El servicio ha sido muy lento en el pasado, incluso si no está ocupada, pero esta vez su pedido fue tomado rápidamente y la comida llegó muy rápido. Luego de unos mates el camarero apareció y perdió todo interés en nosotros y dejamos nuestro platos sucios en la mesa por casi media hora. A 40 libras para tres adultos tener dos campos con calamar y gambas entre ellos platos y bebidas, es una buena relación calidad-precio, pero no habría habido tres postres en la factura tenía el camarero molestado en claro nuestra mesa un poco antes.

Como mecenas de este restaurante desde hace varios años, mi crítica se basa en la gestión actual y también en 3 visitas.

The delivery driver refused to get out of the car and instead sat in the road holding the bag out of the window.

The Service and timekeeping was excellent.. Food was pretty oily (they just need to use paper towels after frying the food which would soak up all the oil) Chapatis were really nice

La comida de mar aquí fue realmente excelente. Tenían unos 3 platos de mariscos en sus ofertas especiales y teníamos todos ellos y nos quedamos muy contentos de haberlo hecho. Todo era muy fresco y con ninguna pista de que nada había sido previamente congelados, que a menudo es el caso cuando el valor es tan buena. La comida estaba bien mezclados, aunque podría haber hecho con un poco más de chile y los pooris eran un toque grasienta aunque estas son minucias sin importancia. No puedo esperar a volver.

Delivery was on time, but they are literally round the corner from my house so it was a surprise it took 45 minutes.

Food was good but not hot. Delivery was about 10min late. Samosas and vegetarian rice dishes were good.

Mi amigo me sugieren este restaurante uno de los mejores platos del sur de la India en el este de Londres. Para comer. pollo biriyani Kasava ordenados y con curry de pescado. No hay nada malo con la comida.. Bueno a probar. pero me siento muy mal por el servicio tienes que pedir agua todo el tiempo y la cara de camarero no parece feliz cuando nos pregunte algo. No puede ser que no es un buen día para él. . donde probar la comida.

Simplemente increíble, auténtica y llena de sabores. Los precios eran razonables. Fuimos a finales de la semana cuando estaba bastante concurrida, pero recibimos un servicio al cliente por el personal amable. Si estás en esta zona recomiendo para visitar, especialmente si buscas un paladar lleno de sabor en la boca.

Love this place. Highly recommend the Kappa & Fish curry if you like fish & have never tried South Indain food. Great food as always but the egg curry was leaking a bit due to the weight of the 3 items on top.

The food took over an hour. It was not worth the wait the curry was more liquid than curry. The korma which was supposed to be mild was actually very spicy. The lemon and coconut rice resembled neither of those flavours. One of the worst curries I've had.

The food was not the same as usual. The garlic in mutton fry was burnt and the gravy was not like last time. This time I was disappointed.

Excellent food - shame most places now add even more time to deliver - said 45mins on just eat, but confirmation added an extra 30mins. Think an hour is long enough for any delivery!

Food took 1.20hr to arrive, the delivery driver couldn't find the right address so had to come out to meet him. Then we found the food was cold, they had forgotten the rice and the chicken korma was just cold korma sauce with no chicken! We called straight up to complain but they told us the kitchen was now closed (at 20.45??)so they couldn't help and they wouldn't take the incoprrect or missing items off the bill, which is basically robbery!! Will never use again
