Oh my goodness.. The nostalgia made my heart happy. The warmest welcome on a Sunday lunch time. All tables reserved which spoke volumes! Roast beef, so much meat on the plate left with no room for a desert which I was gutted about as by this point I knew they would all be home made. Will definitely be back 🙂

Lovely setting next to the old parish church. Traditional small, busy country pub with decent beers. Cider too and wines by the glass also. Properly sourced and cooked food. You can view over a service counter into the kitchen if you are curious. We ate and drank here for a delicious Sunday Lunch. No frills, a varied cook's limited real menu with our choice of a hearty roast beef meal followed by real home baked fruit puddings . Friendly service, a chat with the boss lady, all in the "ambience" of a popular venue for regular locals and visitors. Suitable for seeing tourists who will meet farming folk, landowners and usual mix of "Normal for Norfolk". A big family group including children were enjoying the home baked specials of mains of assorted pies . Be nice to old terrier, Daisy, because she cannot see and relies on scenting !

Having read reviews and encouraged by ratings we decided to call in for lunch. On opening the door our nostrils were filled with the aroma of stale cooking oil. There were a handful, if that, of what we presumed to be locals in the bar area but no one in the dining area. With ratings as good as we’d read about you’d have thought someone would be visiting for lunch. Specials of the day and menu backed up the source of the aromas. It was very heavy on the fried options and nothing imaginative. Sorry guys but first impressions count. Suffice to say we did not stay.

Called in for a pint, this pub is very very rare in today’s society. The decor is traditionally tasteful to the old school. Let’s put it another way no pomp and ceremony if you get my meaning. To the traditional pub connoisseur this pub is a must. The beer is excellent and the food being served smelt wonderful and plenty. Worth tracking down.

We popped into this lovely pub on the way back from a near attraction. We was greeted with a warm and friendly welcome. Our dog although old and in a pram was welcomed in and we met the resident dog Alice. She is lovely. We arrived at 14:50 and only saw the pub closed at 15:00. When my husband checked the times he was told we wouldn’t be kicked out on the dot. Out of respect we made sure we left by 3. The staff and locals were so friendly and welcoming and very knowledgable when asked about the history of the pub. We will visit again when we are on holiday this way again. The menu looked fantastic and my husband was planning on what he would have if we were nearer. Good choice of drinks. Pub spotlessly clean throughout.

An interesting pub for lunch. Looks like it's seen better days but a very friendly English country pub. We called in prior to visiting Oxburgh Hall owned by The National; Trust. The steak and mushroom pie was sublime. Homemade and served with FRESH vegetables and a sauce boat of gravy (Bisto?!). Followed up with a brilliant spotted dick and custard (last time I had that I was probably still at school!!). All washed down with an excellent pint of Ghost Ship

Utterly charming pub. Local customers and discerning visitors.. Food served is home cooked and a genuine in-house selection. Good beer choice if you only want drinks. We came this time for Sunday lunch, roast and pudding, and enjoyed a freshly and properly cooked joint of beef. It was carved to order for individual portions. Outstanding value with friendly, unhurried service. So nice to renew acquaintance with Daisy, the blind terrier, who is the most welcoming of the Landlady's staff.

This place reminds me of pubs in my youth; no nonsense, untrendy, good value, completely unpretentious, friendly and incredibly good value. It is, first and foremost, a pub for locals (I wish it was my local) but is a really nice place for anyone to have lunch. Sunday lunch is great value (and the fact that I don't have to cook it or wash up afterwards is a bonus) The landlady is, as so many people will mention, a character, who is very jolly and down to earth, and I can't help admiring her energy. And she never seems to change. Sunday roast for 4 people, plus desserts and 6 pints, 3 halves and a glass of Shiraz was £75. Brilliant!

To all those negative reviewers who thought they were dining in a restaurant get real! It’s not a restaurant or wine bar. This is a quaint old traditional free house pub. Forget Michelin star or Egon Ronay ratings The food served is good wholesome home cooked food reasonably priced. With a choice of ales The decor is dated. The Dart board dvd and book section collectively adds to its charm. As for the condemnation of the blind terrier walking around the pub. I suggest dog haters go elsewhere. Pubs like this are disappearing daily. This is one of my favourite hostelries. It’s a PUB!

Firstly - it's quirky - an old school hall, bursting with character.Second - no music, just the sounds of people chatting and glasses clinking.Third - staff and regulars were all very friendly, happy to chat to total strangers.Fourthly - they have a delicious dark mild on tap - and most of the regulars were drinking it. Other landlords take note!Fifthly - they serve home cooked food - and when the menu says beef and mushroom pie, that's what you get - pastry surrounding a delicous filling - not a nasty crock pot of stew with a puff pastry top. A real pie!Sixthly - it's dog friendly - our black lab flopped down on the floor and a regular brought him a bowl of water to drink - without us asking.Lastly - it was very inexpensive.I cannot say how jealous I am of those lucky enough to have this as their local.

Don't expect anything fancy, but if you like decent home cooked food this is the pub for you. The pub itself is in a 1960s/70s time warp, but that's part of its immense charm. The bar staff are friendly and the chef/cook is a bit of a dragon (she;ll tell you to get out of the way if necessary), but she does a great Sunday roast and lovely pies. We've been back time and time again and will do so again. Far better than many neighbouring pubs which charge three times the price! Sunday roast for 2, plus a dessert and a drink each comes to less than £30. It's an absolute steal.

We just stopped here for a drink on a Sunday afternoon. It was packed inside with diners eating Sunday roast so it looks a poplar place. Lots of nostalgia on the walls, from what I understand the building use to be a school. Don't think the bar has a massive range of alcohol drinks, it looks a very small establishment. Does serve adnams beer. I only gave a 4 rating as we never ate here so cannot review the food although being packed full of diners usually says it all. Please be aware they do not take credit cards.Plenty of tables/chairs outside with parasols. There is parking space but it did get full very quick. They do shut after lunch but re-open later early evening. Will definitely return to dine here.

We often cycle around this area as it is lovely countryside with quiet roads. We had intended to eat at the Bedingfield Arms at Oxburgh where we have had good meals in the past, but I like to try new places. First impression was that it was a very quirky place, like stepping back in time several decades. It actually reminded me of 'The League of Gentlemen' :). . It is clearly a very popular place with the locals. I wasn't expecting great things from the food, but my pie was lovely and the accompanying veg were excellent. The desserts were good also. Best of all,was the value. Two mains, two desserts, a pint and a half for less than £25, probably half what we would have paid at our original destination. The only negative was the pub dog which was a little too prone to say hello and kept jumping up onto th echairs beside us. Having said that, we both have a bit of an aversion to that sort of tiny scrawny dog (no offense meant to the owner, but we don't like them) If it was a labrador/retriever/ beagle etc we would not have been bothered. I would definitely return.

One of our group e cook mentioned that they hadn't had their pudding, the cook then brought the pudding out, threw the bowl on the table and slammed the spoon down at the side of the bowl. Appalling behaviour, maybe the pub should consider not allowing her any contact with the public as friendly relations were clearly not her strong point. The pub was dirty, particularly the toilets. The two star rating on this review is for the friendly staff in this quirky pub. The name in itself attracts an interest but we couldn't find anything in this pub which explained its very unusual name - definitely missing a trick with that one as I am sure the name in itself attracts customers (which was the reason we stopped by). As mentioned in previous reviews the decoration in this pub appears to be in time warp in the late 50s early 60s and although my husband and I are both childen of the 50s all this decor did for us was put us off of staying longer than one drink and the open servery/kitchen with a view of people washing up at the sink did not encourage us to eat there. Sorry as I said lovely staff but this pub is dingy and unwelcoming.

Lovely little oldy worldy country pub with plenty of atmosphere - food homemade and very tasty - the pies seem to be their speciality ! Reasonably priced and will go again - landlady is a no nonsense but friendly lady, buta little lacking in patience ! It was an experience, to say the least.

On a quiet day you might miss it. On a busy day, you won't. The ambience is local with a sprinkling of eccentric. The food smells good and plenty of people want to eat it.I enjoyed the beer and the landlady kept me in check and I suspect she keeps most in check The location has some serious charm, great location

This is a regular haunt for my Wife and I.Great friendly atmosphere, a welcoming landlady who doesn't suffer fools gladly.Good choice of Beers, Lagers and Cider, as well as all the usual soft drinks etc.The food is mostly home cooked. All the specials are home made pies, they are all good, my favourite is Chicken and Leek, but you cannot go wrong with any of the others, Steak and Mushroon, and 20 Church Wardens Pie. All are served with a choice of Chips, Potato croquets, or Jacket Spud. The range of pies rarely varies, which may sound like a negative, but as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it, and as people keep coming back, it clearly isn't broken.Plenty of the usual pub food options too, Steaks, Scampi and Chips etc.At busy times you may have a wait, however this will be made clear. Remember this is a small village pub, not one of those faceless franchises. If visiting in a large group, it would make sense to book a table. The pub is dog friendly too, the "in house" hound is Daisy a very small and very friendly Yorkshire TerrierNB the pub doesn't NOT take Credit or Debit cards, it's cash or ChequeMr Michelin probably wouldn't give it 5 Stars, but that is his loss.

Have visited the Church Wardens several times over the last 10 years. Great old style country pub. If you're looking for Michelin star food and a choice of 300 Trappist monk beers, go somewhere else. If you want real honest good food (with a very broad selection), a good beer or glass of wine and old style pub charm, full of locals as well as tourists, you can't beat it. The landlady, Babs, is a fantastic character. We go along for a pint or Sunday lunch whenever we're around. It's a brilliant place.

Think John Cleese in a 1970s decor pub, with amiable locals propping up the bar. Add very mediocre, limited pub food, served by a jolly but brusque landlady and you start to get an idea. Quirky charm prevailed but not enough to warrant more than 2 stars, or a return.

We called in for lunch, enticed by the rave reviews on this site, on a dreary December weekday, and were greeted by an overpowering smell of chip fat which is not the most welcoming of odours. There is no doubt that the pub is rather tired, a bit cobwebby, and very, very draughty, but the landlady and her staff were welcoming and friendly. From a very small menu choice, we placed our order for the legendary pies - one chicken & leek, and one steak & ale - and after a fairly lengthy wait (about which other reviewers have warned) our plates duly arrived. The pies were very good and the fresh veg were cooked as they should be. We ordered puddings, one "Fire and Ice" (delicious) and one apple crumble (also delicious, but sadly only a tiny portion completely lost under the ocean of custard). For the price of around £25 including drinks, this was really very good value but the food was nothing out of the ordinary. We're not sure we would return, due to the limited menu, but can understand the appeal especially to folk from outside the county for whom pubs like this must be a rarity.

I was told about this pub by a friend as it is nearby where we are staying in Castle Acre and decided to give it a try for our evening meal. On entering you are immediately struck by how different and indeed quirky it is....in a good way. A warm welcome. It is a place obviously used a lot by the locals who come for the beer and a chat round the bar. We had heard about the pies but only the chicken and leek pie was on the menu....but this suited us. We ordered with vegetables and jacket potato. Sitting at the table with an Adnams beer gave us the chance to look around and take stock. Second hand books to buy for 30p ( money going to dogs charity) at one end, papers to read, small pub dog doing his/her best to beg food, locals to chat with and numerous pictures/photographs on walls to look at. Our food came after a decent wait and was delicious. Pie excellent. Puddings were also home made and we had spotted dick.....lovely. Go and have a different experience. As one reviewer puts it " it is as far away from a themed pub as you would wish" In a world where everything has to be standardised and alike it is wonderful to come across a place that stands out and is different. Give it a try if you are in the area. Recommended.

On a recent weekend away, a driving holiday, with a bunch of friends we found by chance this amazing pub. On entering its like a time warp, but the food was wonderful, the service great and the landlady and staff amazing. If you are in the area give it a go, BUT be warned, don't let the dog out :)

We were touring Norfolk and Suffolk with a bunch of friends for a long weekend recently when, on one of our "excursions" we stumbled across the 20 Churchwardens and decided to give it a try....It doesn't look like a typical pub from the outside but once inside we were made to feel welcome by the amazing Landlady and the locals. The homemade food is superb and very well priced, it's a real breath of fresh air to have some real old proper traditional food in a pub these days. We'd definitely go back and sample the food again..... A pub not to be missed....!!

Just had a family meal in this traditional pub. We were eating with a toddler. The staff were very welcoming and locals were friendly. Beer well kept. Cider on tap was delicious, as were the pies. We feel lucky to have visited ... Wish that many of our pubs in the uk had remained as unique and not lost their tradition to white wash walls and gastro food at ridiculous prices.

This quaint old fashioned pub is a real treasure. Not many of these left! It's one of our regular haunts, banter with the landlady is extraordinary, Babs is a 'one off' and an amazing lady. The food is home cooked and far away from the usual out of the freezer meals. If you like the old fashioned style with good food and humour, real ale too - this is the place for you. We love it, as do many of the friends we have taken there. Well done to the Twenty Church Wardens, it's food, liqueur and it's staff. Thank you.

A pub doing proper old fashioned school dinners type food in a converted school. Choice of 5 pies with veg and spuds and gravy. No fancy drizzles, herbs or sauces. Like walking into Lord Peter Wimsey's gate house, with loads of books and newspapers to read.Very nice and relaxing place.

My wife and I called in with our children on our way to the norfolk broads for a weeks holiday. Its a old school village local, with old school village locals. In fact the bar and decor probably hasn't changed since the war. The landlady and cook are both very welcoming and friendly and they serve a fairly limited homecooked menu with nice pies. Children and dogs are welcome though they don't appear to have any high chairs which is a bit of a pain. As I was driving I didn't sample the beer but they had a decent enough range and the locals were quaffing it happily enough. If this was my local I would visit on a fairly regular basis but i'm not sure I would drive any distance to get here. It's good though that places like this can still be found.

This is our favourite pub eaterie. Its such a quirky pub and full of local characters. We love coming here, always have the home baked pies with fresh seasonal vegetables, and the ladies NEVER disappoint! Menu is traditional and unfussy and sublime if you like home cooked. Nothing fancy, no nouvelle cuisine dribbly drizzles and snotty sauces! Its just lovely honest food.

Came across this pub by chance while visiting the nearby Gooderstone Water Gardens & decided to stop for lunch. All the inside tables were fully booked but it was a sunny day so eating outside was what we intended anyway. I opted for church warden pie with vegetables. Pie was delicious & the vegetables cooked perfectly (ie not to death). Wife had the scampi & chips which was also perfect. Service great & overall very good value
