Pretentious and over priced. People want a balance of good food and drink at a fair price...yes businesses have to make a profit but there are limits. The Swan in Fence is the same. Food is good if you are a small child or eat like a bird...come on guys!!!

The waitress took us to our table and asked if we wanted to see a menu, although we was not eating there i wanted to take a look for future reference and we will be returning as the menu was good and the food that we saw being served looked delicious so cannot wait to go back to try.

Myself and a few friends came here for our annual Christmas meet up; being busy mums the only date we could do was late November. Although they were not officially doing the Christmas menu they were very accommodating and offered us this as an extra option on the menu. We were more than happy to sample and be the first ones to have this.On arrival they had decorated the table for us with Christmas crackers which was an unexpected but nice touch for us and drink orders were taken promptly. The server was very knowledgeable about the wine that would well with the food that I was having with was very much appreciated. Food came promptly, we had pre ordered so this may have helped but we didn't feel rushed to move on to the 2nd course as we were chatting away ( as women do).I can only vouch for the food I had but it was beautiful, tasted fresh and not just heated up. There were no complaints from any of the other members of the party.Overall, great atmosphere and attentive service, beautiful food and even better wine ( great cocktails too I'm advised from the other members of the group).I will most certainly be back to visit in order to sample the rest of the menu ( and wine) with the husband.

I have eaten here loads of times, and also just popped in for a coffee or a beer. The place is quite informal in a very friendly and trendy way. The staff are attentive and always make you feel at home. There is a mixture of booths and more flexible table arrangements. With a family that contains both gluten free and vegan members its an ideal choice that suits everyone as Turners are keen to suit most tastes and desires. Steve Turner's knowledge regarding wine is second to none and he circulates chatting to everyone. Prices reflect the ambience and quality. I feel that they are reasonable compared to similar venues. Good for breakfast, lunch or evening meals.

I am so surprised by some of the negative reviews on TA, the complete opposite of my experience meeting a friend for lunch today. I emailed Turners Wines asking as to vegan options and if their bread contained soya or not (I'm allergic) I had a great response suggesting a vegan platter, with homemade buckwheat pancakes, in lieu of bread.I arrived and was shown to our table by Steve, who I think is one of the owners, who said chef Matthew had planned a vegan feast and gave me a handwritten menu which included saffron and sunblush tomato arancini, mushroom and spinach stuffed buckwheat pancakes, houmous, artichokes, olives, beetroot slaw and salad. When my vegan feast arrived, I was blown away by Matthew's care and attention, to ensure I had a tasty filling lunch and loved the presentation. The arancini were delicious with a crunchy texture, as they were coated in ground almonds (I will be stealing that clever idea). The buckwheat pancakes were like Indian dosas, aerated with tiny bubbles, making them so light. The pudding was equally delicious, perfectly roasted plums, pineapple and pear, with rose syrup and toasted almonds. The flavour of rose can be dominating and I am not keen on sickly sweet syrups, but the balance of both was spot on, the syrup really complimented the fruit.I find that when I enquire about vegan options, its the family run independents, who really rise to the challenge and in this case, Turners really came up trumps. I was thoroughly spoiled and I intend to return with my husband for lunch sometime.

A large group of us visited Turners for a special occaision. There was a limited and not very interesting menu but you compromise when its a group. We were ushered to a series of boths 6 people to a booth, so actually the group did not sit together which was a shame. The food was indifferent. The worse thing was when our group reported to management that the fish cakes were gritty, the guy just said "Oh I'll have to try them" Thereafter he kept a low profile. The staff seemed helpful. On the whole the choice of wine varieties was good, but some whites were not available chilled. I felt the wine to be of average quality and expensive. It occurs to me that this place must be living on past glories. I wont be back

So so impressed on this visit. I had the sweet potato soup as a starter and it was absolutely delicious- I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! For the main I had the steak with the chilli butter thing and wow- it just melted in your mouth and they must put something on the fries to make them so addictive! The waitress was extremely kind and even made me a cocktail when they don't serve them (seriously- this cocktail needs to be on the menu!). It was a lemon mojito and was deliciously refreshing! Great selection of quality wine also! Just 10/10! Absolutely delicious and wonderful, quality and fresh ingredients!

Okay but limited menu (many of the items on the menu were also unavailable so further limited our choice - v v poor & v v disappointed) & food extremely overpriced. Food was good but for the price i wouldve expected more than small strips of steak on a steak sandwich accompanied by a mountain of foliage. Think i'll wake up tomorrow with long floppy ears & enormous front teeth! Service though friendly, was slow but this can be understandable if being cooked fresh. Disappointed as this was for my daughters birthday & half of us couldn't find anything on the menu which was available which we liked. We'd pre - booked the table in plenty of time so should have had the full menu available. Couldn't book anywhere else after we'd found out most the menu was unavailable as it was on the day & too short notice to book anywhere else.

I've been here twice now and the first time all the steaks (although delicious) were not cooked to how we ordered and one was sent back- the other two we soldiered on despite mine being burnt (we did mention this). The second time I got the main of the Spanish meatballs and they were so so so delicious! I highly recommend them! The only let down on the second visit was that my dad and step mum got the same starter and main and both had troubles later that evening :/ they both think it was the scotch egg. Also something really burnt in the open kitchen and set off my coughing and asthma and no apology was given despite the putrid air. Friendly service and lovely decor however. I hear they also own the White Swan in Fence which is just gorgeous. Hopefully Turners will become more consistent as time goes by.

There was a group of us. Starters quite good. The mains received mixed reviews.the lamb received the better feedback. I had the fish platter which I thought was poor. Not a patch on the one at The Assheton Arms at a similar price. Fish cakes bland . Peppered squid cold and rubbery. There were harissa prawns and a slice of smoked salmon and a large piece of French stick bread to make the platter look more filling . Poor at £17. The steaks looked good but again a mountain of salad served with them. I wouldn't go back for a meal but I would probably call for drinks/ coffee during the day. Staff were quite friendly. The place has a nice ambiance. Warning ... When booking avoid booking a booth for more than 4 people as they are too small to accommodate any more than four comfortably.

This place is far from pretentious as mentioned by others. It is a warm and friendly place where the owner and staff are more than helpful. I have seen the owner sit and talk to the older, lonelier customers and go out of his way to get the newspapers they like to read. The wines are something else, the Dandelion Vineyards Red is gorgeous not on the usual menu but they will open most bottles and serve by the glass. The food too, is well planned and delicious. The only slight downfall is the speed of which plates etc are cleared. The young boy in particular seems to be in a world of his own. We go a lot and would recommend to anyone.

Turners must have created such an illusion in Barrowford that no-one notices they are being ripped off. To be honest we ended up here as we had a voucher to use up from a Christmas gift and boy am I pleased I only had to put a tenner to it.On entering we asked could we sit anywhere, the server said yes. We picked a booth. 5 minutes later we were told the table was reserved and we would have to move. Then we were told 5 minutes later it was ok they would move the couple next to us, which they did, they seemed really pleased!!! So they walked out. 10 minutes later we got menu's. After a further 15 minutes we asked to order. One hour after exactly we got our food. I had Greek Lamb, grilled lamb medallions on a bed of chopped cucumber, tomatoes and black olives. It had a bitter taste was a bit fatty but ok. My wife and daughter had a mixed fish platter at £17 which apart from the smoked salmon was a collection of deep fried fish or a plate of beige food shall we say. (For the definition of a fish platter visit the Eagle at Barrow, Benedicts in Whalley or the Three Fishes in Mitton) they both felt decidedly queasy after the meal which came to £58-ish when I eventually got a servers attention for the bill. As I said if I hadn't have had the £50 voucher I would have felt royally ripped off for 3 main courses and 3 soft drinks. Interestingly at 1pm only half the tables were taken, should this be telling the owners something. And just to add insult to injury the place doesn't even appear to be that clean either, sticky table etc. Definitely won't be rushing back to spend my own money.

We visited Turners with a party of 12 for a family meal.We chose Turners because we had visited there in December (a party of 3) and had an excellent experience.Because the party was so large this time we were asked to pre order the food, which we understood seeing as it is small {ish) restaurant.Although pre ordered one steak did not turn up and had to be cooked after the rest of the party had finished their main courses. To be fair to Turners they did not charge for this steak.3 of the party ordered lamb and this was cooked quite rare for lamb which we did not expect. One of the party asked for the lamb to be cooked more as it was too rare but it came back only slightly less alive, so if you like your lamb cooked I would request this at the time of ordering. Some of the starters went amiss too after the pre order, this was corrected but again after the rest of the party had finished their starters. The mushroom starter we did receive off the original order was cold.We would visit Turners again, the staff were helpful with the problems but we feel they should not have occured with the pre order.Turners is not a cheap restaurant and we don't mind paying for quality service which unfortunately was lacking.Don't avoid Turners but think twice if you've a large party.

Just want to say a big thanks to Turners for making my daughter one of their homemade pizza's gluten free. And, what's more it is just as good as their 'normal' ones. Being gluten free can be very restrictive when eating out and pizza's are usually a 'no no' but with phone call to book a table and to let them know we will be ordering GF the staff were very helpful, and it was no trouble at all. We were also told that they were planning to offer a selection of GF cakes and desserts over the next few weeks, which we are looking forward to sampling.I ordered the Blackened rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection, I thoroughly enjoyed it.All in all, excellent service, warm and friendly atmosphere, lovely place to call whether i just want a quick coffee, or a meal out.

I'm not usually one for writing these kind of reviews, but I've been frequenting Turners for a while now and felt the urge to express my views on this little gem of a place. We dined recently in the evening with friends - soaking up the relaxing ambient atmosphere whilst enjoying a variety of wonderfully delicious food and some of the finest wines and beers available in the district (and probably to humanity!...).The staff were, as always, friendly, welcoming, attentive and informative. After a sharing starter to whet our appetites, I opted for the Greek inspired lamb dish which was cooked to perfection, with loads of flavour and the optimum quantity - not over facing but didn't leave me feeling like I'd been short changed either. My partner had the Fish board; comprising the most amazing fish cakes, delightful spicy squid, King Prawns to die for and smoked Salmon. Absolutely delicious and portion aplenty. Our friends went for the Meat Board and one of the Flat bread pizza's respectively - which again, hit the spot with bells on.We also had two of the desserts between us which were incredible and finished things off rather nicely indeed. Sure, there's cheaper places you can go - the White Bear is down the road and Wetherspoons is in nearby Colne, but then these kinds of places exist everywhere serving the usual pub fare. In Turners, as can often be said in life generally, you get what you pay for. If you're after something that's a bit different, a little bit indulgent, something special or simply somewhere to nip in for a chilled out coffee, glass of wine or beer - then Turners is an utterly impressive option, and admittedly, very moreish!I feel rather fortunate to have such a cool and fantastic place on our doorstep. The owners are clearly extremely passionate about what they do and I'd recommend anyone to give it a whirl and enjoy the experience - trust me, it's addictive!

Visited Turners for lunch with my boyfriend. Ordered two chicken baguettes, one portion of chips and two bottles of still water. Bill came to £25. Food good but very small portions and my view was it was very overpriced for what we had and lunch. Chips portion small. Sandwich came only with three lettuce leaves. Service good. Restaurant needs renovating - looked scruffy. Disappointed!

Went for evening meal with my husband the service were great had risotto not great and weren't hot very over priced for the amount of food you get. No sides with it risotto was £14 pounds very steep for size of portion specifically asked for the main course portion not the starter portion.

I've been a fan of Turners since the day it opened. The food is always great, the wines are always delicious and it oozes atmosphere like there's no tomorrow. Turners have just got this place absolutely right. We've been hundreds of times, breakfast, coffee, lunch and evening meal. I even organised my Fiancés birthday party there and it was a huge success. Maybe they are on the pricey side, but there's enough choice for you to eat to your budget...Long may it continue to support the thirsty folk in Barrowford and surrounding areas.

I have visited several times and have found the place to be cold and lacking in comfort. The food is only ok but on the slightly over priced side, the staff are lovely...It's never my first choice when visiting the area.

We recently visited Turners again and on a saturday night and was very impressed with the menu. It was a difficult choice but finally I went for the Blackened Rib-eye steak which was delicious. My wife had the Hake which was also very good. The restaurant & bar was packed and lively with a great buzz.. Very good experiance yet again..I would highly recomend this restaurant..

Went for coffee and cake as a friend recommended it I had lemon tart , it's the best I've ever tasted. Unfortunately the coffee was cold and the food is served on wooden boards a big put off for me, I prefer my food on a nice clean plate. Will go again

As a resident of Barrowford, I have visited Turners a number of times. It's always been a little overpriced but on the whole the food was usually ok. On my last visit the menu had changed quite considerably and it was difficult to find anything I liked. I finally ordered the pizza and after a 40 minute wait I was presented with a cardboard circle with perhaps a teaspoon of sauce and another teaspoon of cheese. I managed a few mouthfuls and because we only had an hour for lunch it was too late to order again. When the waitress came to collect the plate she didn't even acknowledge I hadn't eaten the pizza. I'm afraid I won't be going back to Turners for food.

I just can't get enough of this place. Two Crispy Squid with a couple of glasses of wine for lunch - delightful. First had squid at Union Square Cafe in New York and it was amazing. Turner's chef serves up an even better version with the squid cooked to perfection in a crispy spicy batter. Certain places have that certain edgy New York, Northern Quarter Manchester feel and luckily for us Turner's is one of them.

Went with friends (who had been here before) for lunch - very good and friendly service, restaurant had a good buzz to it, the food was delicious and well presented. I had the vegetarian long stuffed pepper - delicious. The Crema Catalana for dessert was also delicious but a little too much for me. I like the garlic flat bread that comes with the mains - it's very thin and delicious. Will definately return again.

This was out first visit after many recommendations. We are here on a Saturday evening with friends. It had a great vibrant feel on arriving, it was bustling with activity. All of the staff were young and very friendly and professional. We ordered the choritzo scotch egg and the spicy coated squid. Both were well cooked, the egg was lovely with a runny yolk. The squid was tender and came with a good saffron type aioli. For mains the Greek style lamb was pink and juicy. The steak had a nice garlicky herb butter which was great. They also have a great beer called Menebrea from Italy, my husband and our friend raved about it.It's a fun place to eat and perfect with friends for a night out.

I often call in here with friends usually for lunch. Food is good, tasty and different from the run of the mill menu. What I do like is that the food is healthy too.I agree with some of the other reviewers that the service can be slow but it takes time to cook good food and I have to ask why people get so wound up about the speed of their dining experience. It is good to relax and take time over what is essentially a social outing. Something we are increasingly finding difficult to do in the fast world that we live in. There was nothing wrong with our service on this last visit and I will soon be back, possibly to try some evening dining. I love the Il Paso red wine. Not cheap, but then you get what you pay for.

People will may well say "what did you expect in Barrowford" but I was expecting a little more choice and something a little less expensive. My wife and I wanted a light and inexpensive snack for lunch but were confronted by a lunchtime menu whose dishes and prices would have graced an evening meal. I may be tight but I really dont want to spend between £8 and £15 on a special dish for lunch. We ended up with a portion of fries (£3) and a scone, plus coffees. The cake selection consisted of 1 (carrot cake I think) but you could have any number of wines. We wont be returning for lunch any time soon, don't want to put on weight with all those fries!

Been here a couple of times now, although it's been busy I haven't had cause to complain about the service. Food is not quite run of the mill, which is good and they always have some specials to choose from. The flat breads are great and hand made, they come with a variety of toppings and dips - highly recommended. Good selection of beers and wines to accompany your food. The place itself is casual dining, don't expect fancy table cloths and fine china. It can get a bit noisy, but I suppose there isn't much to be done about the acoustics.

More than a 40 minute wait from order to the food being produced ....Food luke warm..asked a bout child portions and then tried to charge for a full adults breakfast for a 4 year old. This was rectified but no real apology for the length of time waiting to get the food.Eggs Benedict fatty cold ham hardly any sauce. Bacon burnt beyond believe on the full breakfast perhaps that's why it took so long to get the food.

Dined here last week with some old work colleagues. Had the Rib-eye steak which was cooked perfectly, came with salad and chips. Service was ok, not the fastest but it was VERY busy, I was told it is like this most days which is a good sign. Couldn't sample the wines unfortunately as I was driving but they have a huge selection. Prices were very reasonable and overall I was quite impressed, would definitely return again.

We took 2 friends with us to try out the evening meals at Turners in August 2015, and we were not disappointed. From the very moment of entering this relaxing and friendly establishment, we were treated to the very best of service. The menu contains a good variety of dishes and offers a fine selection of alcoholic beverages. the four of us chose different starters, the most delicious of which was the goat balls! The Barnsley lamb chop sounded too good to resist so 3 of our number chose that with the remaining diner choosing a lamb kebab. Delicious. Our service was efficient, not rushed but attentive, and the atmosphere was conducive to fine dining. When the time came to choose dessert I was too full, however, it did not prevent me from trying a little of everybody else's chocolate brownie, open dessert and chocolate mousse....... Scrumptious. We completed our experience with 4 lovely coffees. This was our first visit to Turners but it certainly will notbe our last.

Having come to turners at least once a week for that past 12 months I must say our last experience has put us off once and for all! Maybe you have changed chefs but the quality of the food is going down hill! Ordered one of the lamb on flat bread which was bombarded with massive amounts of wet salad! As you got closer to the centre it was realised the flat bread was beyond soggy due to the wet salad and was inedible! Still had to pay full price for it as it should have been returned as soon as it arrived according to the waiter! So if you do go to turners ensure you check your food throughly before eating, take it all apart check the consistencency before you take a mouthful! After all you won't get a replacement or apology if you start eating it first

We are regular visitors to Turners, in recent weeks the standard of service has definitely deteriorated, it must be pointed out that this is mainly when Steve the owner is not present. It's a shame but as one of four groups in (8 people in total) waiting 20 minutes to order a desert and a top up of (excellent) wine it's getting frustrating. The food is great, you get what you pay for in my opinion but service is part of the cost..Will I go back? Yes, mainly because I have told Steve and the feedback has been accepted..

Went to Turners on the spur of the moment on Friday evening. A first for us to go in the evening as we've always done the coffee, breakfast, lunch thing before now. What a treat it was, great beer and wine. Great service and the food was fabulous. How nice to go somewhere and have food that is 'real', made on the premises and hasn't arrived in a vacuum pack to be shoved in a microwave. This was simple but delicious. We'll definitely be back.

Arrived at 7.15, for a pre booked meal, by 9.00 had only received an overpriced beer & a small bowl of `chips` for 5 people to share.( I kid you not!!!) . Our meal arrived at 9.30 which consisted of a Pizza base with salad & 6 prawns in a sweet chilli dressing. That meal cost me £13 + £4.50 for a glass of beer- outragous.

I have been here twice now, the first time was great the second visit was good but wasn't as good as the first time! The food is really nice and the staff are friendly and attentive but I do feel like they must book in more than they can handle. We had to pre order this time because it was a larger group and when our food came they'd ran out of fries which most people had ordered and we got one bowl dumped in the middle of the table. We got told we wouldn't be charged and then when the bill arrived they had been charged along with an extra bottle of wine which no one had ordered because everyone paid separately for drinks. This did get corrected when we questioned it. I would recommend people to visit because the food is really nice and there is nothing else like this nearby however a busy Saturday night might not be the best time.

It was Monday lunchtime, both myself and my wife were free so decided on a drive out but not too far from home.By coincidence Barrowford was mentioned early in the day and Turners was recommended so i looked it up on the internet and even though I wasn't sure exactly what sort of place it was,it looked interesting.Firstly parking isn't easy but we found a side street and got there about 1.20pm.The staff greeting was not over friendly but we were seated straight away. When asked about drinks there was no offer to go through the menu or specials,I also like to be told what the soup is without having to ask or career round the place looking for a board and more importantly the style in which most of the food is delivered which is actually quite quirky {on a board}.The interior is interesting with all sorts of wine on display for sale,a wooden bar structure with casual seating close by and a mixture of banquette seating and individual seating which actually was all ok.I ordered fishcake to start which was a special which was ok but slightly over priced and my wife ordered pitta bread with dips which was actually a good portion and she enjoyed it.Staff were continually hard to engage with, disappearing into the kitchen or behind the bar,i actually think it lacked a bit of organisation. The place wasn't busy but the starters took some time to be cleared and then there was a wait for the mains which we only accepted as we weren't in any rush however the bar/cafe/restaurant wasn't that busy.We both ordered kebabish, one with chicken which was very good and one with lamb that was fatty and in places quite unpleasant. My wife left quite a bit of the lamb but staff when clearing never asked why.We then sat around for some time, again with no interaction from staff,no attempt to offer dessert or coffee so rather than wait any longer to ask for my bill,I went to the bar and paid it.I have no doubts I may be in the minority with this review as Turners is something different in a lovely small village but personally I don't care where or what it is as long as it delivers.I believe when you are attempting to be a quirky, different almost Northern Quarter style establishment you have to ensure that the concept is clear and the staff deliver which I think there are failings on both.Staff with a more outgoing personality would help, bit more organisation and quicker kitchen would all help.Would I recommend Turners ?....No, if you are going to Barrowford specifically to go there however if you are passing through anyway Im sure its the best place in the village/town?

We visited on a Thursday night about 8.30. We waited about 30 minutes for our first course - by the time an hour was almost up we had still had only one course. When the mains did arrive one of them was pretty much stone cold. Shame, because it's an attractive room and the staff are friendly. There's an interesting menu and daily specials - although a starter of fried crab was a small portion and really not worth the price. I had a fish platter for mains which was quite good.

Great atmosphere, great music, the best selection of wines to choose from and perhaps most importantly the food!!! We started with Turners' Bruschetta and it was so good - full of vibrant flavours that make a standard dish into a classic, followed by delightfully cooked pink loin of tuna with an unusual but highly successful accompaniment of Baba Ghanoush, Courgettes and Wild Garlic. Where else in this area can you be treated to food like this with the most knowledgeable host who drives the passion for this wonderful, quirky place.

Not the sort of place I frequent, but junior was waffling on about it (pun). She had been asking about 5 times that day if we could finish up there, so i gave in. I just had a Milk shake which was delicious, she had to have the full Monty waffle with everything on it. I don't think you could have added much more. She loved it so I'm happy. Well worth a visit especially for big kids and little kids.

Great real ale pub full of character, nice staff and good value. Do pizza and burgers during the weekend.' Also live bands during the summer months.
