From the moment we stepped inside, I could feel the weight of disappointment settle like a dark cloud. The decor, desperately clinging to a bygone era, screamed for a total overhaul. It was as if time had forgotten this place, leaving it to slowly fade into obscurity. But the real heartbreak came when we tried to enter the conservatory. My husband, who uses a wheelchair, was forced to wait in awkward silence as staff scrambled to lay down a ramp—a ramp that should have been seamlessly integrated into the experience. The humiliation of being treated as an afterthought, rather than a cherished guest, cut deep. This may not be an issue for everyone, but for us, it was a glaring stain on what was supposed to be a special night. The menu was straightforward—two or three courses—but the food, while pleasant, lacked the magic we’d experienced in the past. The absence of any offer for additional sides, like vegetables, left us feeling overlooked. Yes, we could have asked, but should we really have had to? The glass of champagne, the supposed crown jewel of the evening, was a complete letdown, tasting more like a cheap sparkling wine. It was a bitter sip that lingered long after the meal. Service, too, was a shadow of what it could have been—hurried, inattentive, and devoid of warmth. And then, the final blow: the bill. We were charged for three three-course meals and two desserts, when there were only two of us. After pointing out the error, the revision still wasn’t correct. But my husband was eager to leave, so I paid, my heart sinking as I realized how badly we’d been overcharged. And to top it off, I’d left a tip, making me feel like a fool. I had specifically noted in our booking that this was a celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary—a milestone deserving of at least a small gesture, perhaps a candle or a special touch. But there was nothing, not a single acknowledgment of our special night. The lack of care and attention to detail left us feeling hollow. What was meant to be a joyous occasion was instead marred by disappointment and regret, a night that should have been memorable for all the right reasons, but was instead unforgettable for all the wrong ones.

We had an amazing meal celebrating my 80th birthday on Saturday June 29th. 22 of us dined - all with the wonderful tasting menu. Most also had the wine pairing and 3 had a vegetarian taster. The service was spectacular and we were treated like royalty. The 6 courses managed to have 21 different variations of vegetable. Vic and the team could not do too much for us. Thank you so much for making a special birthday extraordinary

I had booked afternoon tea for 23 friends as a special birthday celebration. The selection of food was excellent, 4 finger sandwiches each, 2 scones, chocolate mousse and a selection of cakes. Everything was delicious. The service was excellent and we were well looked after and not rushed. Reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend it and would go again. Thank you so much for giving us a wonderful afternoon.

We never had anything to eat as husband went in to ask if could take our dog and sit in the garden? Husband said we only wanted a light lunch reply came back no if you leave your dog in the car and come in we are very busy so you will have to wait until i get round to you . We were not upset about the dog not allowed in the garden but the curt attititude it seemed once he knew we would not be spending a fortune by only having a light luch he was not interested and hoping we would go which we did. One of our daughters got married there 25 years ago but it has gone done hill as regards how customers are spoken to. Hence will not go there again even for just us two,

We had an amazing meal here. Three courses for £25 - and generous portions and excellent cooking- is amazing value. Service was very good from staff who really care and a fantastic wine selection at reasonable prices; the primitivo comes highly recommended. We had a variety of fishes, but our favourites were the duck pate Pana cota and the apple semi freddo/mouse desert. Whilst food and wine were both fantastic, what is really important to us when eating out is service, and fro our arrival until we left, we were made to feel so special. If we could name everyone we would. The Spanish waiter and restaurant manager were great but a special mention to the amazing Steff, a hospitality star! We will be back. Thank you.

Went for afternoon tea, pre booked. One person dropped out and despite giving them 3 hours notice they still insisted we pay for the extra person. Agreed to this as they stated had already started preparing our food. When we arrived a member of our group stated they are Vegetarian, the server- stated he was a Manager, snapped that I should have told them this at time of booking. I apologised for the mistake and asked for the menu to order something else. He then made a awkward situation very difficult by repeatedly telling us off for the mistake. This is not the level of service I would expect from an establishment such as this, usually they will bend over backwards to ensure everyone is enjoying themselves and is happy. The server/ manager was extremely rude and ruined our experience, which was a shame as the other staff were lovely and the food was lovely. I emailed Marygreen Manor/ Tudor resturant a few weeks after to feedback back about my experience and they haven't replied, which shows how much they care about their customers satisfaction.

I took my mother here and we had the celebration afternoon tea for her birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Served like a tapas with a selection of food. Mini burger, prawns, cran, croquettes. The pigeon was lovely. Something I would never usually eat. The desserts were yummy. I preferred this than the standard afternoon tea with sandwiches as I find I'm too full to eat the desserts. The chefs even came out and described each of the food that they had made We also had a glass of champagne and a large pot of coffee and tea. Well worth the money. Definitely will be coming back.

This was a very odd place. We were given a gift voucher and had never heard of the hotel/restaurant before. We booked a table for lunch at 12.30 but our table was not ready until gone 1.30 and our 2 year old kept saying he was hungry. I had to ask several times if we could order and be seated sooner, and if they could bring out the children's meal as soon as it was ready but they didn't . The children's menu was VERY expensive for what it was, £25 for garlic bread, a small bowl of pasta and some ice cream. As it was a Sunday we were limited to the roast dinner which was fine as we love a roast but the food was average. It took ages to come out and the service was very slow, the beef was very fatty. I feel we were tricked with dessert as the menu said chocolate caramel but turned out to be egg custard! We had to ask for everything, sauces, drinks, a high chair, water. They didn't seem to anticipate a customers needs or ask the usual questions you normally hear in a restaurant. Thankfully we had a voucher and didn't have to pay. I can't say I'd be going back again.

Today we went for afternoon tea to clebrate my Mum's 90th birthday. The experience was absolutely perfect! Lovely views of the garden from the conservatory, the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious, the waitress was friendly, attentive and patient with us, as we spent a good amount of time over the meal. The whole surroundings made for a really special occasion. They even gave Mum a plate of cakes with 'Happy Birthday' written in chocolate on it! Mum had a fantastic time, and we would highly recommend the afternoon tea.

Very disappointed, we choose the hotel and restaurant for our clients and met for a business dinner, the tablecloths stank of damp obviously washed and not dried properly - very off putting. The food was nothing like it was when I dined here a year ago! We literally had a huge not particularly nice pork chop dumped on sloppy mash. The salad was like something my teen would have put together it was very embarrassing as we’d shown the photos on the website to the client and suggested and praised the dinner to them and had to keep saying sorry it must have changed hands it wasn’t like this last time we came. The desserts however were lovely especially the cheesecake

Following a very unpleasant experience here in the summer, I was a little apprehensive about returning to celebrate a New Year meal with family here. In July I brought American friends to visit and the service was rude and the Maitre d' was obnoxious. However, on New Year's day we were waited on by helpful, friendly staff - predominately a young man named Greg, who was very efficient and professional. We again enjoyed excellent Roast Beef, though I was tempted by the Chicken Supreme, which looked delicious and had been recommended by Greg. Our family ordered soups and salads to start, roast beef all round and an array of desserts and sorbets. There's enough on the menu to keep everyone happy and the price is very competitive for the three courses. The only disappointment was that there restaurant was only a quarter full, so there was little ambiance. I wonder why?

With a bit of time on our hand after work we decided to go for it and try the six course tasting menu with accompanying wine flights. Seemed like a bargain at £48 each plus £24.50 for the wine> Not always the case but there was a well matched wine with each course. Enjoyed the pork belly in particular but all courses were tasty and at the end we were quite satisfied. Staying at the hotel so not far to go to sleep it off. The surroundings are quite something too.

We recently stayed for a couple of nights at Brentwood's Marygreen Manor Hotel. This is full of history with links to Henry VIII. Within this hotel is the splendid Tudors Restaurant. We were there for a couple of nights so we tried both the a la carte menu on one night and the tasting menu on the second night. The food was very well prepared by the chef team. Starters were elegant and tasty. The main course was nicely presented with separate vegetable 'sides'. The wine list was also very good. I have included a couple of photos of my starter and main course selections (both fish dishes on that night). For the second night as stated we opted for the sampling menu with wine flight. This was really good as it showcased the chef team's variety of dishes. The wine pairing was also fun and informative. The overall standard of both a la carte and sampling menu formats was excellent. We would definitely recommend a meal at this restaurant. Also worthy of note is that this hotel and restaurant is only a short distance from junction 28 of the M25. This makes access very good indeed. Enjoy.

Had lunch here for my husbands birthday, and was sorely disappointed. Pre lunch drinks in reception were fine, shown menus, and we opted for the A La Carte. I asked the restaurant manager, about the Dover Sole, as for £36 I’d hoped it was fresh. He explained, though delivered fresh, depending on the day it was subsequently frozen, however he assured me it was popular and they’d never had any complaints. He told me I would not be disappointed. We started with a delicious amuse bouche, of mushroom soup, and were eagerly anticipating our mains. My Dover Sole arrived and was filleted at the table, impressive. Once on my plate I attempted to flake some off with my fork, but it didn’t budge. I then, tried to cut it with my knife, but it was like a piece of rubber! I tasted a little and found it to be completely over cooked and dry. I immediately told the manager, and asked him to take it away,he apologised, saying he wouldn’t charge me for it, and I could choose something else. By this time my husbands fillet of beef had arrived, and he said it was ok, but not anything special. I then chose the pork cheek with cracking, which came after my husband had finished his main. Although tender, the pork was very dry, flavourless, and the crackling was a piece of pure soggy fat! We didn’t stop for dessert, and needless to say we won’t be going back! Don’t waste your money! Went to the pub across the road for pudding!

We really enjoyed our lunch at Tudors on New Years Day. In such a traditional setting - picture the dark oak beams, heraldry and tapestry - roast beef was the order of the day. We enjoyed smoked salmon, spicy tomato soups and warm, fresh rolls to start. Roast beef was served to the diners preference; my medium beef was delicious. It as nice to get an individual serving of veg each too. The tart tatin here is excellent. We enjoyed a very nice meal in a very nice setting - all at a very reasonable price. First visit to Tudors and will certainly be coming back! Celebrating our anniversary we wanted some local fine dining and were not disappointed. We had the tasting menu with accompanying wines and really enjoyed the whole experience. Food was exceptional, with the halibut my favourite, closely followed by the Angus steak. Service was very good and we thought deserving of the 12% they added to the bill. The meal was unhurried and no long gaps between courses, was very well judged. Afternoon tea is my most favourite treat in the world so my husband and I had both had a bit of a rough time lately so decided to book a treat for ourselves. I found online that the Marygreen Manor Hotel offer an afternoon tea so I booked. We have just returned. It was brilliant. The food which arrived on a three tier stand was a mixture of various large finger sandwiches (ham and cucumber, cheese and tomato, egg mayonnaise and smoked salmon) and they were not stingy with the fillings. There was also a selection of small pastries and four large scones with a huge pot of jam and another of clotted cream. We were offered a selection of teas and when one pot had gone were offered a further pot at no extra charge. It was a real treat. We were seated in the conservatory with a view of a beautiful green leafy garden and small fountain. I am in a wheelchair but was not to made to feel that I was a problem or in the way as I have been in other restaurants. The staff were happy, polite, helpful and kind. We negotiated one small ramp to climb one step into the conservatory and that was it. Easy. We enjoyed it so much that when we got home I have booked a further afternoon tea for us again in August and we are thoroughly looking forward to it!!! Thank you lovely staff at Marygreen Manor Tea Room. Can't recommend this place highly enough!

This was an extended family birthday lunch celebration. What a disappointment. This restaurant is stuck in an era which has had its day. The whole restaurant was dark and dingy, the waiting staff were all wearing white gloves, or they were supposed to be white. Most of them had gloves that looked liked they had seen better days and had more stains on them that a 1 year old's bib! The menu is not great and way too expensive for what is served up!! Service is slow and pedantic. House wine is charged at £24 a bottle, which is crazy! The food itself was OK, but nothing special. When you are charging big money for food, it has to be good and this just wasn't up to par.

First visit to Mary Green Manor after hearing lots of positive recommendations. We were a table for 6 visiting for afternoon tea. On being seated just outside the conservatory, our tea and coffee orders were taken, and I enquired about the selection of sandwich fillings - I requested my smoked salmon without cream cheese (as I don't eat cheese). Two trays of delightful looking sandwiches, cakes and scones arrived (each with 3 of everything) - but still no drinks. I asked the waiter which tray the smoked salmon without cream cheese was on, and it was only at this point he told me that the chef said he couldn't meet my dietary requirements as the sandwiches were already made, so they had provided one tray with no smoked salmon but extra cheese and tomato. This meant that not only was I deprived of smoked salmon, but two of my companions were also deprived of smoked salmon without so much as checking they were happy with this arrangement. It also meant that I could only eat half of the sandwiches provided. We were given the cheapest alternative in cheese and tomato, and not asked which filling we would have liked an extra one of if they couldn't meet our simple request for no cream cheese. We also ordered prosecco and other drinks from the bar at this point, and the waiter asked if he should bring the drinks before the tea and coffee and we replied no we really would like our tea and coffee particularly now the food has arrived. He promptly prepared our drinks from the bar and only then did he prepare our tea and coffee. Even then had mixed up the decaf and ordinary coffee. We also only had one pot of tea between 3 people who were spread around the table and one jug of milk. This really wasn't sufficient and it was like pass the parcel round the table waiting for milk or tea. We noticed other tables being offered replenishments of their finger sandwiches, none were offered to us, which would have been appreciated - especially given I could only eat two of them.On the plus side the pastries were delightful, but service and complete lack of thought/concern for dietary requirements means we won't be rushing to return or recommend. A real shame as the dining room looked very nice from what we could see.

I had informed the hotel when we booked that we had a voucher, and that I needed a dairy free menu. This they had complied with, but the rolls that I was given instead of sandwiches were very dry and had no spread, such as pure or Vitalite. One roll has 2 slices of egg, but no mayonnaise ( I have yet to find a mayonnaise that contains dairy) I was given a bowl of succulent strawberries with a few blueberries. and 2 cakes. These were so dry and hard that they were inedible. Everyone else had a round of sandwiches which were OK., the plain and fruit scones I am told were very good. they also had a selection of bite sized fancy cakes which looked very pretty. Tea or coffee was replenished as required. This was all for £16.50 a head. (they forgot to take off the already paid for voucher money !) but the bill was readily corrected

We enjoyed a family dinner at the Tudors last week in Mary Green Manor. The restaurant and hotel interior is great, and enjoyed the open fire in the lounge area. Choice and food were good, but we did have to chase for service several times. They also failed to carry our drinks from the lounge to the restaurant, leaving us to have to ask. Nothing major, but could improve as pricing is relatively top end, so a high service standard should be expected. Overall a nice experience, and would go again. When you book ask for a circular table if possible as the one down the aisle are a little narrow and the service has to pass those sitting on the outside.

I choose this restaurant for my boyfriend & I to celebrate his 23rd birthday. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly waiter who asked if we would like to have a drink before being taken to our table. We were able to choose our meal & wine whilst we were having a drink. The waiter who took our wine order had tried every wine on the menu which was impressive! We were shown to our table and given nice bread and breadsticks and then some delicious mushroom soup (both of which we are sure was complimentary!) For our main courses I had the beef and my boyfriend had the venison, both of which were absolutely delicious. The best beef I have ever had.Overall, the food and wine were delicious. I have a nut allergy and made the restaurant aware of this when I made the booking. I was incredibly impressed with how on the ball they were with checking with the chef if everything I ordered was suitable for me. Unfortunately, however there was only one dessert on the main menu that was suitable for me (which I happened to not like). The waiter kindly offered to get me a fruit salad & ice cream (which I was charged £7.50 for which to be honest was a bit of a rip off!)The staff at the restaurant were very attentive which was fantastic. The food is rather expensive but what can you expect from an excellent quality restaurant? The portion sizes were smaller than we were both used to but neither of us were left feeling hungry after the meal. I would definitely recommend coming here if you would like a nice, quiet, refined dinner but do expect to spend over £100, our bill was £122. We didn't have starters and the overall price did include the 12% service charge.

We chose this restaurant again for the fourth time on NYE because we like it very much and the service is always impeccable and the servers polite and attentive and the food is always glorious. The menu usually has the same choices but we vary what we choose from it each year. The only thing I will say is this year we booked too late for various reasons and we got put in the conservatory which has the same if not better more attentive service because there are only a few tables set up in there but the atmosphere is not the same due to the amount of people and also you do not get the amusing music quiz in there, only in the Tudors restaurant and the lady singing can be heard but not seen as she is in the main lounge behind us whereas in the Tudor lounge the singer is on a small stage in front of you. However we still had a great time and stayed over and had lovely breakfast in the Tudors although those garden rooms are a bit dicey with all the steps to enter the room and to get into the bathroom. This year was the first time I actually fell into the room over the step on arrival and hurt my knee (and that was before I had had a drink for the evening). We will return this year but will deffo book early enough to get in the Tudors restaurant for the evening. p.s. Don't think people should be able to reserve tables in the Henry V111 suite when there aren't enough table for the disco afterwards anyway. Nobody wants to sit there from 8p.m. but that's tough, you cant expect to swan in at 11pm and get a table and chairs.

Was staying at MaryGreen Manor and had meal with friends in Tudors. The hotel restaurant is a might expensive but good variety of menus allow for different size purses, including table d'hote, a la carte and a multi course wine pairing menu if you really want to push the boat out (I will one day). Have eaten here a few times and the good is always very good and service impeccable. On this occasion went for Christmas fare with a very good and surprising inexpensive Pinotage. Really enjoyed.

Upon arrival our coats were whisked away with the offer of nuts and olives whilst we perused the cocktail list. Settling on Kir Royale, we sipped and selected the tasting menu with wine pairing. The 6 course menu was inventive with some more unusual meats (squab pigeon, sweetbreads) alongside the more mainstream choices (steak, bream) the food was all cooked to a high standard, arrived promptly and was accompanied with some delicious wines.I would recommend this restaurant for couples looking for a quiet, high quality meal with very good service - something not always seen locally. We will be back very soon to relax in the lounge and enjoy some more of the flavours on offer.

I had booked a table for two for a Saturday lunch over a week in advance and was told that they were very busy and could only offer us 12.30. This was fine by us and we enjoyed a very good a la carte lunch, though there was also a set lunch menu which looked good value. However, the strange thing was that we appeared to be the only people actually eating lunch - the restaurant was indeed very busy - but everyone else seemed to be having cream teas. This continued right through the lunch session. The setting is impressive, the staff very efficient and obliging and the disabled parking and access excellent.

The prices are a bit on the high side unless you have the tasting menu, though i couldn't have this as I was dining alone. The starter (rabbit cannelloni) was very good. The main course (wild boar) was tasty but the main meat was over-cooked. The service was very slow, it took 45 minutes for the starter and 30 minutes between the starter and the main course.

If you really want "the business" for a special occasion, try the Tudor at Marygreen Manor and take the Tasting Menu. It's not cheap at about £75 a head but that includes a different wine with each of the 6 courses and becomes really good value. The menu changes regularly. We had 1. scallops 2. baked goats cheese 3. haddock 4. tuna 5. steak and 6. dessert plus coffee etc. That is the bare essentials but each course was beautifully prepared and imagniatively accompanied. For example, the scallops cam with apple sauce and very thin slices of apple. Service was excellent as were the accompanying wines and the seeting is majestice. Try to get the top table for 2 by the fire and you can oberve the other diners

Went with friends for afternoon tea we had pre-ordered one vegetarian when food arrived I asked for the vegetarian at which point the food was whisked away saying we only were allowed 4 finger sandwiches each so some had to be taken off? All very unprofessional we then had to ask for the wine menu as were not asked if we wanted champagne or drinks ? Sitting next to a shelf my husband noted the amount of dust on the shelf being asthmatic this was extremely bad !! The food was very nice however we could have eaten more sandwiches though. The service as noted before in reviews very poor not asked once if it was okay either we did leave a tip however but again not thanked. Not sure if I would return.

My husband and I took his parents to the Tudor Restaurant to celebrate his father's 80th birthday. The food was excellent and enjoyed by us all. There are a couple of small reasons for not giving the restaurant five stars. When I made the booking I mentioned that it was my father in laws birthday and again when our wine was poured we toasted him in front of the waiter and it would have been nice if some acknowledgement had been made to him of the fact that it was a special occasion. Three of us ordered from the menu du jour and one from the a la carte. The a la carte menu included an amuse bouche of a very small cup of lobster bisque. It was quite strange to have one person given the amuse bouche while the other three sat there with nothing. If they are going to offer both menus perhaps it would have been a nice touch to give the amuse bouche to all four of us. However would definitely return and would recommend this restaurant to others.

When booking our table here (giving approximately 2 months notice to the venue) we stated that there would be 3 vegans in our large part of 17. We were told that this would be fine & that we could choose anything on the vegetarian menu & they would adapt it to make it suitable for vegans. However, when we arrived & had chosen our meal, we were then advised that EVERYTHING on the vegetarian menu contained egg & that instead the chef would make us a vegan vegetable tempura, which we happily accepted at the time. However, when my dish arrived, the server hadn't equally distributed the "selection of vegetables" & I literally only had battered onion on my plate. It was simply a whole onion, chopped into wedges & covered in batter. I was then presented with a small side order of vegetables, but these had been prepared with butter (NOT suitable for vegans). This was extremely disappointing as we had given the venue approximately 2 months notice of our dietary requirements & had been looking forward to our celebration at this venue.

My husband & I have eaten here on many occasions, and it was even the chosen place where my husband 'then boyfriend' proposed to me. This place has the best value food out of any restaurant I have eaten at.In the week they run a set menu which is incredible value and the food is of michelin star quality in my opinion. We have never have a mediocre meal here in about 5 years together and it is always our chosen place for a 'special occasion'.Do not come here expecting five star modern surroundings because this is not what the Marygreen Manor is about. This is a traditional 'old fashioned' country hotel where you take a seat in the lounge area and enjoy a drink before you go through to the dining room. You even order your food in the lounge if you would like, and you can finish off your evening enjoying coffee and petit fours in front of the log fire. Quiet ambience and traditional service make this place like no other restaurant around. The service sometimes lacks personality and there have been a few language barriers over the years with a few foreign workers. We stayed at the hotel overnight on one occassion but in honestly thought it was overpriced and the rooms were a little run down for the price, however it is great value if you get one of their overnight pacakges including breakfast and dinner.Overall, we hope to return for many years to come. I just hope they continue to employ the right callibre of staff as we have come across a few over the years which has slightly 'tainted' our experience.

Tudors Restaurant is within the Marygreen Manor Hotel, a beautiful 16th century Tudor building that exudes comfort and period charm. The lofty beams and decor of the restaurant provide an extravagant and luxurious atmosphere, perfect for a special occasion or, as my family and I enjoyed recently, Sunday lunch. The set menu includes three courses for £23.00. Not the cheapest option around but dishes are a little bit different from the usual Sunday lunchtime fare, freshly prepared and beautifully presented. The exception is perhaps the vegetarian dish of Penne Pasta with Pesto Sauce, which although extremely tasty, was an unimaginative choice, I thought, given that the a la carte vegetarian menu has such a wonderful selection. We were a party of eight and a deposit was required at the time of booking. The service was efficient and attentive and we did not feel rushed at any time. Our visit was very enjoyable and I look forward to returning. Pre drinks can be enjoyed in the hotel bar where you can also peruse the menu and place your order. The restaurant has other menus, including the aforementioned exclusively vegetarian menu, and the hotel also offers cream teas, which I haven't tried yet but I am told are very good. There are also conference rooms and a private dining area, the Henry Vlll suite, which comes with its own bar area and cloakroom.Autumn

This hotel restaurant is surprisingly quiet, yet the food is of a high standard and quality.Admittedly it's not the cheapest, but it's certainly not the most expensive place we've dined at either. Besides, I'm always reminded that "you get what you pay for", which probably makes this venue more appropriate for that special occasion! We opted for the tasting menu with accompanying wines and it was very enjoyable. A thoughtful and well presented range of dishes full of colour, wonderful aroma and, essentially, great taste. It was a very pleasant experience and we left full, if a little tipsy, and very contented. Our compliments to the chef. I used to think this restaurant at the Marygreen Manor was one of the best in Brentwood. I recently took my wife and another couple here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I found the serving staff surly, heavily accented to the point where I had to constantly had to ask them to repeat themselves. It did not help having a table of 6 diners adjacent to my table that were very loud, so it seems that now the serving staff and the clientele are not what I would expect. The classic when paying the bill I asked for the "discretionery tip" to be removed from the bill, my response was that the the person serving me "would have to ask the managers permission to do so". At that point the amount I was going to leave was reduced to zero. Shame, it spoiled a special night.

I have always eaten here with my family from when I was younger for special meals. I introduced this place to my husbands family and we have been here a few times for milestone birthdays and they have always been good. We have always been impressed with everything as the food quality is excellent, service is very good and it is a lovely place to have a civilised meal. Drinks in the lounge while you look at the menu and then choose before going to your table, then coffee back in the lounge if you wish after your meal is what we like and no rushing the meal. Everything is an event and experience which we enjoy. My husband and I decided to visit last Saturday so I booked a few weeks ago just for a treat and also to test out a meal for 2 and to see if it would be just as nice after all these years! We were not at all disappointed. Some restaurants treat you differently/ignore you when just a couple rather than a larger party but not here.We always go for the A la carte menu.Food was lovely and my husband while eating said "See this is what I love about this place, they never fail to disappoint. Look at this, I expected it to be one thing and it is totally the opposite, and that and that together goes so well together but I would never have thought it." Presentation is lovely, food is very very good and quality is excellent. There is plenty of it. Always a good choice on the menu and interesting choices.Staff are all very good. Everybody is excellent.Tommy has been there for years and it would be a disappointment not to see him around. He treats everybody exactly the same and is consistent over the many years I have been here. Vic in the restaurant also deserves a special mention. Can't wait to return. Already counting down till my wedding anniversary! My only comment would be that the fixed price A la carte menu is now priced per item. I prefer the fixed price but it is only a little bit more costly. We feel it is worth every penny but for us it is a big treat so not something we do as often as our trip to the Toby/Black Horse!

The first time I visited this restaurant was in 1995 and that is still something I remember with pleasure. Now it was time to revisit. You have two choices from the a la carte menu either 2 courses for £ 35 p.p. or 3 courses for £48. We chose the the first option. Starter was scallops (delicious) and my main course was venison and my wife chose pheasant. Be aware that the portions are modest though creatively presented, so if you are very hungry do order side dishes too. This restaurant is where you go for that special occasion like birthday, wedding or anniversary because it has a lot of ambiance. However, most important for people like me: How was the food? The main courses were very good, but not quite Michelin star quality. We paid all together £ 104 including a gin tonic, 2 large glasses of wine and a large bottle of mineral water. We think that was reasonable as service was included.

We ate here on a Sunday for their set menu at £23 per head, thinking that given the reviews on here that the food would be at least a little special. We were disappointed.Decor was pleasant, with plenty of history and ambiance. Service was good, can't be faulted. The food was a let down. Starter of platter of Italian meats looked and tasted like it had come from a sainsburies pre-pack, and the fish cakes with chilli mayonnaise were firery hot, difficult to taste anything other than the chilli. For mains we had roast beef, which seemed to hove been cooked by the slice. It was tasteless and the gravy was remarkably like my old school gravy. yorkshires were tough, vegetables al dente, which was nice, but unspiced and bland.Desert - the profiteroles were ok, the chocolate sauce that came with them was terrible. The chocolate sponge with chocolate sauce was IDENTICAL to the mass produced stuff I had at school, down to the over-watered chocolate-custard sauce. Great for a trip down memory lane, but really not what you would expect for this level of establishment.

Wonderful restaurant! Service is wonderful and friendly and the menu is fantastic. The starters are absolutely delicious, particularly the braised lobster and the puddings (the chocolate fondant in particular) is amazing. The atmosphere is wonderful - beautiful setting and full silver service. The only down side is that the meat with the main courses on the a la carte menu tends to be a bit "dense" - needs finer carving and cuts of meat need to be better selected to ensure tenderness. Mash potato is a bit too runny also! Apart from that, full marks!
